The Buffy fandom generally doesn't spoil from trolls. It's usually incidental like "I can't wait for you to get to _____" or "You're going to love _____" or "Are you going to watch _______?" - so it's a good idea to have your mom looking out.

    • @DanielOrme
      @DanielOrme Год назад +28

Well put. That is very much what I see in the comments of other reactors I've followed. Occasionally you'll see a genuine troll show up, but mostly it's from fans who are so well-versed in the show and eager to talk about how what you see now will lead to future developments that they forget to guard against being spoilery. It's hard to blame them. Part of why we watch the show over and over again is to enjoy seeing how brilliantly the whole thing develops.

Yeah, most commenters on Buffy are great, I wasn't trying to start a panic. I just saw someone post the basic plot outlines for every season to another new reactor to the show, spoiling at least three twists, and was like ... why?
My biggest fight with myself is to avoid setting expectations ahead of time. But I think generally stating that "it only gets better" is ok.

    • @amandabaker4678

I've also seen the occasional commenter who doesn't seem to be a troll, but who cannot seem to understand why saying things like: "Oh, you think you don't like this person? Just wait till you see their character development throughout all the seasons - especially in the last one" or "you'll love how they develop on the spin-off" are spoilers.

In the Buffy community, there aren't nearly as many 'I'm going to spoil this for the reactor' people as apparently there were for Game of Thrones, but there will be people who leave leading comments which hint at future spoilers. These posters will think they're being coy and subtle, but when dozens and dozens of posters leave the same kinds of messages, it's practically impossible for the reactor/reader to not put together what's afoot or being hinted at.
I've seen some Buffy reactors spoiled on future events because of an avalanche of "subtle" and "coy" posts leaving hints in "funny" ways.

Your insights about vampires retaining parts of their human identity is a very good and important one. What makes a person who they are, fate versus free will, what makes someone good or evil, are all reoccurring themes of the show. I'll also say that this is one of the shows that pioneered more serialized story telling on TV. Other shows from the same era doing this being the "X-Files" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". First season has the most stand alone episodes as they figure out what the show is, which in its own way makes it fun.

Sure this has already been pointed out, but Jessie's fate was supposed to be a lot more impactful - Whedon had planned to put him in the opening credits for this two-parter to fool the audience into thinking he was a full-time cast member - but they couldn't justify the cost of making two sets of titles.

Thank you! No one ever thinks how traumatizing it must've been for Xander having his best friend die by his hand and how hard it must've been for him to try and muster up courage to even think about taking down his closest friend. It's why he's one of my favorite characters on the show. I have always felt that as the story progressed, some of the choices he made stemmed from the outcome of these two episodes.
You're very insightful so I can't wait for you to peel back the layers for these characters ♥.
And I agree, Cordelia has the best one liners. She's so extra and so rude. She sure tells it like it is even though it's so brutal lol.
So what we know so far is that in Sunnydale, vampires are a type of gang with weird faces. Gotcha 🤣👍.
Joss Whedon made it very clear that vampires are not cute or romantic. They're demons and ugly looking which is why you were taken back when you saw their faces. And that's what got my attention to watch this show. It was the darkness of it all and the fact that a regular girl had the power to kick their butts. That appealed to me. This was at a time when I was already watching Xena kick some ass. That's another great show. Another female that everyone underestimated her capabilities. A true badass like Buffy. I grew up watching these two characters. They were it for me. And I thank God I was around to see it all.

I do remember when this first aired that it was as one 2 hour episode.
Jesse was purposely put as a main character because Whedon loved to subvert expectations by having a main character die meant anything was possible.
In fact the creation of Buffy was originally because he was tired of the cute blonde getting killed in films and wanted to see what would happen if she turned around and kicked butt.
The Watcher's council is like the Talamasca of Anne Rices book series, a team of people who know about the history of the supernatural. That's why there's more than one.
In the movie (which takes place before the show) Buffy's original Watcher dies trying to save her, so Giles is her 2nd Watcher. Though it's also stated that her original Watcher was someone who is reincarnated over the years.
The demon/human hybrid idea is further explored and explained more clearly later on.
Buffy wouldn't want police involved because they would just be pawns because they wouldn't understand what they would be fighting.
With Angel you're in for a treat with him but mmmmm I can't say anymore beyond that. But many of your predictions are kind of right kind of mixed.
The Master is a character that's not explored as much as I'd like but still great. One of the issues is this show was a mid season replacement so it was only 13 episodes and Whedon wanted to not end the show on a cliffhanger in case it wasn't renewed.
Sunnydale stands on a Hellmouth, which we heard in the first episode, it's further explored so you'll learn why the people of the town don't perceive things properly.

I don't usually see people trolling and intentionally spoiling, but in S5 in particular there is a lot of people thinking they're being really clever and posting jokes that reference later plot points. It's not subtle, it's not clever, it indirectly spoils things, but it happens every single time and I'm not sure your moderators are going to be able to handle all of it because it'll be like 90% of comments... :P
    Good reaction! Stick with it.

Buffy is a great show, glad you're staring this journey. Not a spoiler, I think many in the fandom would agree you'll see a leap in quality from season 1 to 2 as it goes from a quick summer replacement show to an actual full season. And one thing you'll appreciate about the show is that the characters evolve, remember previous events and change as a result of what happens to them.

American Pie is the reason I started watching Buffy. Way back when I still channel surfed cable, I saw Band Camp Girl and stopped to watch season 3 episode 3. I was quickly hooked and TiVoed the series. It was in reruns on cable 2 episodes a day. Meanwhile season 5 was airing. So I was a bit confused until I got all caught up.

I think I've watched every Buffy reactor on RUclips, so great to see a new one! Subbed for the journey. It's my favourite show ever.
Some assholes do spoil and it really irritates me. One reactor had to do a full intro about not spoiling for him because he was getting so sick of it.
So guys - PLEASE don't spoil for her, I already saw one in the first episode. Don't talk about any future events or episodes, don't even talk about "you will love so and so's character development" it's all spoilery! just stick to talking about the episode she's just reacted to. It's much more fun to see reactors completely unspoiled, they don't know who is going to live or die or who will become a major character at this point.

I think that part of the rationalization and coping with people's minds, also involves forgetting certain things. Block it out kind of to make it easier to rationalize. So the people in the club may not remember the guy biting the guys neck. It happens fast, it's a traumatic experience. So they rewrite it as something else in their minds to cope, and they forget or change certain things to fit the story that they can rationalize.

Your comment about lots of shows having something traumatic happen to a character and then it's not discussed next episode etc is one of my pet peeves for tv writing! I think Buffy is really good at addressing the consequences of big events and the emotional ramifications for the characters. Xander staking Jesse is the only example I can think of where the show doesn't really address it properly, and that's only episode 2/3 so I find it easier to forgive.

You can guess the main ingredients of BTVS from the name: It’s a comedy (Buffy), horror (Vampire), action (Slayer) show. I put the people of Sunnydale’s invincible ignorance of the reality of the supernatural in the “comedy” column, and it is in fact played for laughs at a few places in later episodes. 🙂

You Tube just popped your channel into my feed and as a long time Buffy fan I had to have a look at your reactions. I really enjoyed both your enjoyment of these first two episodes and your really considered thoughts about the action so far as well as your speculations on where things will go. Thanks for acknowledging how traumatising killing Jesse must have been for Xander. It's something a lot of reactors don't consider. Re your question about people spoiling things or trolling, as others have said the Buffy fandom tends to be pretty good and any accidental spoilers come from people just being over enthusiastic in their love for particular characters or plotlines. I see you've just finished S2 so I'm looking forward to catching up with your reactions to date. :)
