    Make sure you only watch the 4:3 version. The wide-screen version of the show was a quick cash grab by the studio. As such, they rushed it on the cheap and messed up a bunch of stuff. With the wide-screen edition, the color timing is messed up, some night shots appear with daylight in them, the dusting effect appears more as a smoke than dust, some of the effects shots weren't completed, sometimes actors with lines appear in shots where their mouths don't move, sometimes production equipment appears in frame, and on occasion you'll catch a cameraman with a second camera in the shot. It can be a bit distracting and pull you out of the show.
    The show was shot with wide-screen cameras with the shots composed and cropped to the 4:3 format. It was only ever intended to be viewed in the 4:3 format.
    There exists one Buffy episode in season 6 that was shot and composed in the wide-screen format. That's the only episode that should be watched in its native wide-screen format.
    Other than that, I'm excited to see you cover the Buffy'verse. Enjoy.

    Is this the widescreen version? If so you really want to switch to the 4/3 non hd remaster. Since the remastered version is probably one of the worat remasters ever made, night scenes becoming day because they didnt to the same filters on the remaster and stuff like that.

    There was a movie that kind of started it all. But the director took it in a more comical direction than the creator wanted so it flopped in the box office. That's where you'll see Buffy become the Slayer..

    I have never seen your channel before, but when Buffy came up, RUclips naturally recommended it for me. So happy it has! I have subscribed and am very much looking forward to your Buffy reactions. I've seen the series 14 times before (5 times with reactors doing full-length reactions), and I still haven't gotten enough of the Buffyverse! Welcome to the journey. The first season has its growing pains, and all I can say is that the series, the writing, the effects, the lore, the character arcs....it only goes *UP* from here!

    • @vov.7397
      @vov.7397 3 месяца назад +1

      I like the first season, though I know many in the fandom don't. I like the campiness of it, and it really leaned hard into the idea of monsters as metaphor. There are a lot of standalone episodes, but that was typical for most network shows so audiences could miss the first few and still be able to understand what's happening. All in all, I think it's a pretty strong season. I even like "I, Robot...You, Jane." I just love this show!

    • @ravenlord7144
      @ravenlord7144 3 месяца назад +1

      @@vov.7397 Oh, I do like the first season perfectly well! Just in comparison with later seasons, it's generally considered weaker. There are a couple of episodes in it I usually skip, as I've seen the show over a dozen times, but I still love the first season as a whole. :)

  • @lmagoddess
    @lmagoddess 3 месяца назад +11

    The reason she is a slayer from the start is because the series is based on the movie , "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The shows refers to it occasionally but Buffy was played by a different actress. Also, the actor playing Angel was on another long running show called "Bones." I loved that show!

    • @migmit
      @migmit 3 месяца назад +1

      Well, "based" is a strong word. The movie is not considered canon within the series; however, the original script Joss Whedon wrote for it is. The movie contradicts quite a few things firmly established in the series, and, in fact, I'm pretty sure there is a deliberate jab to the movie in the second episode.

    You'll want to be careful with spoilers unfortunately. The buffy fandom is not great at avoiding them. It's not so much people outright saying things, but people think they're being clever when they're really not. "I really hope nothing bad happens to them....", quoting lines that are seemingly insignificant that will pay off way down the line and drawing your attention to them, "You'll want to remember _______.", "You don't remember _________?".
    Just a bunch of things that hint at future stuff that people don't remember that a new viewer isn't supposed to have attention drawn to and it's a surprise when it happens. If you have someone who can screen, it could be good. Or just tread carefully!
    Excited to see you move through the series! It gets really, really, really good!

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 3 месяца назад

      Generally the Buffy Fandom is pretty good about not spoiling. There are tolls who do do it. But those people are rare in Buffy. I have seen reactions to other shows where every other post is a spoiler. And that sucks for reactors to those shows (poi being one of them).

      @@spamfilter32No, the original comment is correct. It's not just trolls. There's a lot of people who THINK they are being clever with vague comments but when so many people do it, the effect is drawing attention to big spoilers. The Buffy fandom is really bad for this.

    Did you notice the comment about names? Around your 5:37: "What kind of name is 'Buffy'? Hey, Afrodisia!"
    Xander was in the library because earlier in the episode Willow sent him there. He even holds a math textbook.
    Cliffhangers are not the main thing, but some episodes are two-parters, and that includes episode 1. Actually, I think, all of two-parters start on an odd-numbered episode, so, if you consistently watch two episodes at once, you'll get each two-parter in one go. BTW, originally episodes 1 and 2 were aired back to back.

    Be careful. This show is addictive. It may just change your life just a little bit. Season 1 tends to be a little trying at times, so stick with it until at least some ways into Season 2. You will not regret it. My opinion is that this is the best show to ever air on TV. (Buffy = comedy, Vampire = monsters, Slayer = action. Oh yes, with some soap opera thrown in for drama.) I am going to give you some background without spoiling anything. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a movie that came out in 1992. It has a small cult following because of this series. The first season of this show was a fill in for another show that was canceled. That's why it is shorter than the other seasons.

    • @rtp5768
      @rtp5768 3 месяца назад +2

      It actually had a following before the show that gave the show a nice prebuilt audience super hyped for it all.
      I’d actually say it’s best to watch if before the show since otherwise you miss a number of jokes in the first two episodes and it also helps you realize the true horror of the last episode of S1 and know to actually take it seriously.

    Welcome to 'The Buffyverse'. You have chosen one of the greatest shows of all time. The way this series develops over the seven series is incredible with brilliant, characters, storylines and meaningful life metaphors. The show has everything life, love, lust, friendship, grief, joy and brilliant comedy too, all told in brilliant drama, you will love it. S1 of BTVS is a bit cheesy due to low budget etc but you will see it improving leaps and bounds from S2 onwards. It is an amazing show. Most people who start to watch it become totally engrossed in it and cant wait for each episode. As you mentioned you know about Angel too you will love it also, when the time comes for you to watch it. Enjoy your journey into 'The Buffyverse'.

    When it first aired, the 1st epispde of Buffy aired as a 2 hour special, so what has been broken up unto a part 1 and part 2 originally was 1 full episode. So, for those who watched it as it originally aired, there was no "To be continued" that was just a commercial break, and then the episode continued.

    So exciting!! 🥰 I really think you'll enjoy this one!
    Fun Fact (non-spoiler): The reason why the show starts with Buffy already as the slayer is because the show is partially based on the more campy/comedic movie of the same name (which actually does show Buffy becoming the Slayer). So, they basically made the Buffy movie (more or less) into the TV Buffy's backstory. That said, they do make it pretty clear in this 1st episode that TV Buffy's backstory isn't exactly the same as the original movie: Principal Flutie brings up in this episode that TV Buffy burned down her old school's gym, which doesn't actually happen in the Buffy movie (though apparently, it did in an earlier draft of the movie script, which is why they used it).

    Keep in mind that this was a shoestring budget midseason replacement with a largely unknown cast and a new showrunner. S1 is widely considered the weakest...and it still has rewatch appeal with several very memorable eps.
    SMG really shows her acting chops and the rest of the cast just gets better and better.
    Don't let the goofy title, teenage high school setting or witty dialogue fool you. This isn't a comedy.
    Buffy is the latest in a line of Slayers that stretches back deep into prehistory. The Slayer, always a young teenage girl, goes into deadly combat every night of her life until she is killed.Then the next Slayer is called.
    They don't last long, and they die hard.

    One thing that made Buffy unique as far as hero shows go, it sort of starts in the middle, rather than at the beginning. At the start of the episode, we learn that Buffy has already received her calling. That her calling happened some time ago, and she has already fought many vampires. Most hero shows start with the hero not yet having received their calling. And they would get that calling sometime in the 1st episode. Not Buffy, though. This show starts with her already being the Slayer and knowing what that means.

    A couple non-spoilery points:
    1. At the time BtVS came out, it caused a major shift in how TV shows were written. Previously, the vast majority of shows had very little continuity - at the end of each episode, the reset button was pressed and the next episode started out with the same status quo as all the others. Buffy was the first show of the modern style, where actions have consequences and where characters can die at any moment (not just because the actor's contract wasn't renewed at the end of a season).
    2. Buffy (especially in the early seasons) is heavily metaphorical - you've already seen an example with the "guy picks up an unsuspecting girl at a dance/party and turns out to be a dangerous predator", except here he's a vampire. Feel free to look for more as the season progresses.
    3. One of the reasons David Boreanaz's character (the "friend" who told Buffy about the Harvest) is so mysterious here is because the writers didn't really know what exactly to make him. They considered various options - he's supernatural, he's an agent of some kind, he's an observant local, he's a hunter, ... and ended up choosing one or more of these options (or maybe none - spoilers).

    Subscribing for another great Buffy reactor! The first season is only 12 episodes long because it replaced another show that got canceled half way through the year (back before streaming!) and is fairly uneven in quality, I think. But there are definitely some good episodes & the ones that aren't great are still entertaining. And if you can get to season 2, it really takes off then!

    Yay new buffy reactor! You will love it! You asked about our fav things from the first episode so I’ll give you my two (quite different highlights)
    1. The flipping of expectations about the supposedly “helpless” petite white blonde girl- both darla the vampire in the first scene who you think is about to be killed and then turns out to be the real threat! And then Buffy the ultimate wolf In sheep’s clothing (if you are a vampire.)
    2. My favourite line from the episode comes from school bully Cordelia “god what is your childhood trauma?” When buffy bails her up with the stake.
    Loved the reaction! I think you will enjoy the show :)

    If no one has mentioned it, this is a spin off from a movie... so she knows, & is annoyed, that she is a slayer... her mother has moved her to this school to get away from the upset of the origin school..

    Could be wrong, but I think at most, there is 4 or 5 two parters over all 7 series, but don't quote me.

    • @palisade32
      @palisade32 3 месяца назад +2

      There are 14 Buffy multi parters, 06 Angel multi parters and four crossovers events.

      @@palisade32 To be fair, I last watched through Buffy about a year ago, didn't think there were that many multi parters. Still need to watch Angel, I'm only 30 so all i caught live on tv was, I think the last season, if I even caught that much.

    • @blurften
      @blurften 3 месяца назад +1

      Depends on how you count two parters, I'd say that surprise/innocence is as much a two parter as what's my line part one and part two, but if someone wanted to argue that I'd call it a fair point

    • @palisade32
      @palisade32 3 месяца назад +3

      @@blurften Good point. If you discount those episodes it's probably more like nine or ten "To Be Continued" multi parters for Buffy.

    I have avoided season one of this show for years... it's rough... lol. Will probably get some hate for that, but it is very much finding it's feet in the first season, but when it does, it's pretty amazing.

    Crushing on the handsome men? Well unless you get into Xander in a big way, there probably aren't that many candidates for that. Most of the straight women I've seen react to Buffy do get into Mr Giles at some point along the way. Oh there's Angel I guess!

    BTVS is only the greatest TV show ever made and that’s not hyperbole perhaps only Star Trek or the Twilight Zone could equal it. The pilot sets things nicely but originally it was a two hour premiere to you have to watch episode 2 to fully appreciate it.
