Xander’s tweety bird watch is the highlight of this episode for me.
makes me laugh every time
Y'know, I never thought about this before but...wasn't Buffy on the WB network at the time? Maybe it was easier for them to do a Tweety Bird watch than, say, a Mickey Mouse watch or something. I remember the WB Network used to use that Warner Brothers Cartoon Frog (was it Michigan J. Frog?) as it's mascot.
@@victorsixtythree yeah might be. I bought a Buffy coffee mug back in the day at the WB store at the mall. Do they even have those stores anymore?
Lmao😂
"Do I bother writing his name down? I'm sure he'll be dead by the end of the episode." You're already so jaded!😂
"Is he just an idiot?" Well, speaking as a former teenaged boy...
The level of thought and analysis you put into Buffy as a character is DELIGHTFUL.
I love how becoming an Vampire automatically makes you into a martial arts master.
Well remember it's not you, it's your body possessed by a Demon with your memories but it's fighting ability
3:52 "Do I bother writing his name down? I'm sure he'll be dead by the end of the episode." Only 5 episodes in and you already know Sunnyvale so well! 🤣
Here we go, it's the end of the episode, and Owen is still alive?!? Something must be up!
I'm so pleased I've found your reactions. You're the first introspective, enthusiastic and inquisitive reactor if seen start the show in a while! Love yoir productions and thoughts. Joining your patreon 😊
There are all of these little B/G moments over the first 3 seasons that really build their connection into one of my all time favorite TV relationships, the end of this episode is the first of those.
Great reaction. I love the speed with which you're releasing these episodes.
As a big fan of the show, it's so fun hearing all your theories and predictions. I can't wait to watch you discover the story as it progresses.
As always, loved the commentary and analysis at the end. By far the best BTVS reactions I've watched.
That's because he was explicitly called that by the show itself. In one of the FUTURE episodes.
@@migmit Oops, my bad. I didn't remember that.
This is 1 of those episodes of"Buffy"I *completely forgot it existed.*
14:55 - 15:16 COLIN!!!!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤(He's not a _new_ Anoited one,he's the original."The Slayer will not know him"means she won't be able to recognize him. They _thought_ the crazy big vampire was the Anoited one, but,in reality,it _was_ the little boy all along.)
"We're never gonna see this guy again"
NOW you're getting it.
It's interesting to think about how, in the pilot episode, Angel says he's a friend, but "I didn't say I was yours", and then Buffy figures this means he's friends with Giles ("I just assumed you two were buds') in light of her reactions here. Even though the actor for Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) is 15 years older than the actor for Angel (David Boreanaz), from Buffy's perspective they're both "older guys", so she lumps them in together. (David is eight years older than Sarah Michelle Gellar; we don't have an age on Angel yet, but if he's 24 to Buffy's 16, that's still significant.)
And, as much as Buffy seems to be attracted to Angel (thankfully not apparently attracted to Giles, lol), he's also just another guy who wants her to be going out and fighting vampires, when she just wants to hang at the club with Owen. She must be feeling very used.
Full marks to the Master's disciples for running such a clever game to hide the Anointed. They realized that Andrew Borba would make a great decoy, and keep any anti-vampire fighters busy while they brought the kid to the Master.
I do worry that Borba thought Owen was dead when he clearly wasn't. Does this mean he was actually innocent of the double-murder he was suspected of, because he couldn't tell a live body from a dead one? Or does it mean he did commit the murders, and he liked it so much he's now imagining killing people even though he barely knocked them out? I go back and forth.
Loved all of your insights into Buffy at the end! I really appreciate you putting that extra thought into analyzing her frame of mind. Plus I love how you phrased Owen being a dark horse at their school... "he reads" lol
I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to the Master as "our bestie" before. 😄
Pagers had phone numbers, so you had to call that number and then you could press up to 10 digits that would be then displayed on the pager.
Pagers, the pager has a number, you call it, and then you dial your number, or a message. The receiver can then read the number you typed to call you back.
I used to work for a pager service so let me explain this ancient technology.
Someone, somewhere, has the ability to send messages directly to all the pagers. So if it is a police pager then the dispatch desk can simply page them from their own transmitter.
However if you're just a teenager, you don't have your own personal transmitter. So you buy the pager from a pager company much like you would a cell phone. Then if anyone wants to page you they ring that company and dictate the message to send. Either that or sometimes there's just a number you ring for that specific pager and as soon as you ring it, your caller ID number gets sent to the pager without any other message.
Pagers still exist. The main users now are miners because cell phone signal doesn't penetrate beneath the earth, but the longer wave radio signals a pager uses can.
Thanks. I love trivia.
This episode feels like Spider-Man story but with Buffy, that’s why I love it
spot on post viewing commentary
Random background character: ...
Cass: They're a vampire.
xD
I was ten when this show started and I watched it from it's first airing (and about a million times since through rewatch). I love that you're unspoiled because you're in for an absolute treat! It's really fun hearing your predictions too ❤.
I never thought about Owen and Buffy like that. I'd noticed something that felt weird about their relationship, but you put it into words and now I get it.
Looking forward to you continuing to watch this series. You have a great insight into the psychology of the characters and I can't wait to see your impressions of some of the character development.
I'm so glad I found your channel. Buffy is my favorite show of all time, and it's really nice to see someone getting into it for the first time. I also love your analysis and how much thought you put into it :)
Haha - I love how much you're loving these episodes already! Can't wait for what's to come...
Small suggestion for mods to pass along; Try waiting until after watching the episode to look at it's title if possible. There are some incredibly well known and talked about episodes of this series which may be hard to avoid hearing about even if only by title and brief description, not reading the name of the episode you're about to watch can help preserve some of the experience with knowing as little as possible for what to expect of it.
Gee that Angel guy sure is swell 😍🥰😘
Having watched the show like 10 times, every new reactors S1 speculations are so intressting :D
Really enjoying your reactions and the quick turnover of videos 👍😁
Please tell me that I’m not the only one who’s watched all of buffy and when she said please don’t be Cordelia i laughed
3:29 is probably one of the best parts of this episode...Buffy tilts her head and is like "you actually gave thought to what i'm like...i like that."
Owen was interesting but also Buffy showed great maturity and responsibility to reject him; the danger signs with Owen IMO was when Willow said he brooded a lot...he clearly has issues...he is interested in death and very deep n dark things...someone like that shouldn't go looking for danger.
The problem with Owen in the end is that he got excited about getting almost killed. A danger seeker like that as a romantic partner for a vampire slayer? That's a desaster waiting to happen - she was totally right to end it.
You are in for so much fun , this is a great show .
If I remember right you would call a number and they would send the message to the person’s pager. It was like an operator
Owen is definitely not the new kid. He looks like he was held back at least 12 years.
It’s fun when you know the show and what you get wrong and right 😊
This isn't a hugely well liked episode, but I like it. We really start to see now how difficult it is for Buffy to have a normal teenage life. A relationship with someone who doesn't know her slayer identity really isn't possible. Really enjoying your reactions and insights! 😊
We now have a mother witch trapped in a trophy, big praying mantis eggs about to hatch under a desk and Owen becoming Buffy's "friend". The future is going to be crazy.
Great work...I hope you can see this until the end. It will shock you with its depth several times.
Xander is hung up on Buffy. Willow is hung up on Xander. Buffy is not responsible for or required to do anything about Xander's crush on her. Likewise, Xander is not responsible for or required to return Willow's crush on him. : ) Just regular teenage drama there. Glad you're not too annoyed by that. Many people are by this point. Owen needs to find a hobby that will let him find the adrenaline rush without using someone.
owen is just a quirky boy ✨️
Again, I loved hearing your overall thoughts on the episode and getting into the mindset of these characters. I enjoy hearing your predictions. Dude, you're awesome 🤗. Loving tour reactions.
P.S. you're the only reactor I know that thought Owen was hella weird and immediately didn't like the guy because you thought he was evil 😂.
Loving your reaction sm
Great reaction. I'm looking forward to rewatching this series with you.
really enjoying your reactions :D
Pagers were somewhat useful in an annoying way because they could only receive. And even then the first were only capable of short, numeric messages like a number to call. Then phones looked over and thought "let's do that only bigger". And thus texting was born.
I would say after pagers, wireless phones were born. Texting came after that.
@@visarr True but much less funny
Owen is at school in daylight. Ergo, not a vampire. (And this is not a spoiler! Even if it weren’t seven months late!)
I'm always checking, waiting for the next Buffy reaction
Vampires can't be in direct sunlight. Owen was in it several times from the windows of the library and the lunch room during the time when you were wondering if he's a vampire. when in doubt, did any direct sunlight hit the character? :)
*spoiler free*
Her: post show speculation about future episodes
Us: 😳🤐
“Why do you have that kind of watch?”
Hand me down? 🤷♂️
“Why do you have THAT kind of watch?”
Hand me down. 🤦🏽♂️
It's saying something that if I had a choice between watching this episode and the previous one, I would choose the previous one.
You know, I'm kinda getting ADHD vibes from Owen. Hyperfixations (definitely books and poetry and possibly vintage items) and totally loses track of time and even days. Plus, he's an adrenaline junkie, seeking danger all the time. Sounds like he's chasing the dopamine 💁🏻♀️
Honestly, I have never really warmed up to Xander and I think it’s all because of the way I was introduced to him. The way he reacted when Buffy tried to warn him about the mantis lady, how he trash talked Angel and Owen just because Buffy is interested in them (especially the bit about Owen spreading it around that he got with Buffy when Xander implied he was hooking up with Buffy and Willow during Teacher’s Pet), and the triangle thing all just always colored the way I see Xander.
Xander is a 16 year old boy with a crush on his very hot friend. That’s a tough spot for him. He’s certainly immature but what 16 year old boy isn’t? He’s a guy that masks his pain and anxiety with jokes but in the end he’s got a good heart IMO. I was a 16 year old boy at one point with crushes on my friends that didn’t see me like that, so I empathize with him.
That's fair, he certainly isn't giving off the best impression in these episodes (especially compared to Willow). But the kids are believably young and dumb and still doing their best when the chips are down. We were all young and dumb once. Let none of us be judged by what we did in our teens. (Or twenties, and uh actually can some of us get a pass on the other decades too..)
I don't think it's spoilery to say you're on the right track in your analysis of Buffy and her dealing with the conflict between being The Slayer and being Buffy. This is something that will come up again.
I've always liked this episode. The only weakness, I think, is the character of Owen. He seems like a nice guy, but ... well, that's it. He's a nice guy and nothing else that special. It's hard to see why Buffy or the other girls are so excited. Your insight that Buffy is more excited by the idea of having a normal real date than by Owen himself makes sense in that light.
That ending gave me redrum feelings.
I do agree that Owen was not the right guy for Buffy but I think you misinterpreted that scene where she looks at her beeper in the Bronze. She was totally participating in the conversation about Emily Dickinson until he mentions that there are more important things in life than dating... and that is when Buffy looks down at her beeper. I think she is reminded that yeah, her slayer duties are more important and so she feels compelled to check in.
Why do you keep thinking people are vampires in the school? It's during the daytime and there are plenty of windows so not ideal for a vampire! lol
Owen clearly had a serious concussion and was not acting rationally afterwords. He really should have gone to a hospital.
I get so tired of the whole “gets better from here” mantra. But is it true? Yes, of course it does, as does EVERY television show ever made (up to a point). But first there has to be world building which includes character development. Character development is where GREAT drama comes from. I think a lot of fans are over the first season for the most part because they know all of this stuff we’re being shown and would rather move on to the great story arcs this show is so well known for.
9:06 "And notice Cordelia picked the _red_ lip." So does that mean red = bad choice? (Who knew I'd be getting 1990s teen dating fashion advice on this channel? 💄🤣)
4:30 I don't know I brood a lot, my experience is girls aren't really attracted to it in reality.
ironic
Some of your predictions are off but they are also on.. if that makes sense. You have good instincts when it comes to this stuff, but also it's a dynamic well written show.. so nothing is fully predictable. I'm enjoying you watching this because it's like watching it all from scratch all over again. I was in high school when this aired. It was a different time.. but a lot of the themes are still relatable to this day.. can't wait for you to get to season 2 and season 3.
A lot of the drama in Buffy seems to be when people see/hear something out of context and misinterpret it.
Few people these days know how a pager works as most people have mobile phones.
Nobody is born a vampire, vampires cannot have children. The master has been a vampire a very long time, he is not quite a 'normal' vampire.
I never liked Owen, maybe its because i ship Buffy and angel i don't know but i find him very Blaw.
The fact you liked this episode is great as it shows just how much you will love the show going forward, but for me this is the weakest episode in the whole first season. Keep up the great work I enjoy the breakdown you do after the episode it's nice to listen to others perspective about the episode.
