Spike killing the Anointed One without ceremony and upsetting the expected narrative arc speaks nicely to to the irreverence we see in his character. He's not one for protocol.
Fun fact: Juliet Landau didn't have to audition for the part of Drusilla. Joss Whedon had been very taken by her performance in " Ed Wood" so after explaining the character of Drusilla to her, she was offered the part by Whedon. And thankfully to all us Drusilla fans, she accepted the roll. ❤
role
@@Nexusofgeek. He also give her a cinnamon roll to celebrate, and who would turn that down!
I love Spike calling the anointed one the "annoying one."
She was also the reason James was cast! She specifically asked for him after reading together because their chemistry was so good
Another fun fact: Actor Martin Landau is her father.
Not you manifesting a new villain and possible love interest for Willow back-to-back 😅😅😅
Spike and Dru's introduction is one of my favorite moments in television history. Incredibly acted characters.
Cass: "we need a new villain and we should lose the annointed one..."
The Powers That Be: ep 2.3
Remind me to never make you mad, Cass. Your powers are impressive.😂
It's totally Joss to give everyone what they ask for......just not when/how they want it 😈😈
The PtB: Here, have a Spike.
Remember that Darla was clearly obsessed with Angel and told Buffy they'd been in a very long term relationship before he got his soul. And remember her clear look/sound of betrayal and despair when she realized he'd staked her. So we've seen a soulless vampire have feelings towards another vampire.
"Is this the new villain I wanted?"
Yes. Spike is the villain you've been waiting for. :D
Spikes cocksure and impulsive but not dumb. I like that he didn’t hesitate to dip out as he felt the momentum of the fight turn on him. It’s why he’s still alive despite being rash enough to junk a plan out of boredom, that combination makes him dangerous.
He's also smart enough to do recon on the slayer before and after engaging. Just not smart enough to pull a gun. I mean, I get that vampires usually wouldn't need them, but with a slayer, they no longer have an advantage, and it's a fight to the death. Bragging rights are fun and all, but they go out the window as soon as the stake goes in your heart.
Actually, attacking early has its merits. They were expecting him on Saturday, he caught the gang unprepared. Or at least less prepared.
@@Tantalus010 Spike seems to prefer a "fair" fight, some sort of twisted vampire sense of honor. He pulls some underhanded stunts this season but that mainly seems to be because he's focused on curing Dru.
@@Tantalus010Spike also took killing Slayers very seriously. There was no way he was gonna let anyone say he took the easy way out when adding another to his list. He loves the fight and the kill.
Before Darla was killed last season, she stated that she and Angel were together for "several generations" prior to him getting his soul back; they definitely engage in relationships with other vampires.
As spoken of in Angel S5 😂
@@heather9857. I don’t even know what you’re saying here but I feel like it needs to be deleted.
@@heather9857Spoilers aren't cool.
I think any vampire like Spike who can kill not one, but _two_ Slayers, brash and impatient as he may be; knows when to make a strategic retreet.
The writers had to find a way to dispose of The Annointed One, so they had Spike do it.
According to vampire lore, they don't age, and with a growing child playing the part, they couldn't have that.
I think the -anointed- annoying one could have just been forgotten between season 1 and 2 but was kept in the show specifically so that Spike could kill him.
He apparently grew a lot between S1 and S2.
We don’t get a lot of full body shots in S2 of him.
I think 'Passion of the Nerd' put the whole 'vampires in love' mess in great context on his RUclips channel: Vampires can feel love, however, without a soul, they are only capable of selfish love. It's more about taking and possession than giving back and caring for the other person's wellbeing.
Love your reactions!!
SPOILER(?): Yeah...sure...🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄💢💢💢
I don’t agree with that at all. But I’m not gonna state anything else at this point.
My favorite thing about your comment is that you gave credit to TPN. I see people also trying to pass off his work like they thought of it. I know people can have shared ideas and whatnot, but there's something about plagiarism in particular that just seems so obvious.
Vampires do feel things. The master was upset when Darla died, Darla was upset Angel choose Buffy over her. Its not that they can't feel things or not have emotions.
The way I understand it, the soul on BTVS is meant to be the conscience and moral compass of a person. Losing one's soul doesn't necessarily remove the ability to feel different emotions.
"Spike, give me a hand"
And a few beats later Spike does... He applauds Buffy's handiwork. *chef's kiss*
"the girl in the museum" with the braces is Rodney - When they were walking back into the library after leaving the museum, Willow says, "Rodney looked like he had been dead for 500 years..."
Just to clarify, the 'girl' in the sarcophagus with the braces was actually Rodney's mummified corpse. I guess girl mummies and boy mummies tend to look similar, once they're desiccated.
I did think the hair was different on Rodney's corpse; however, it was so quick you'd have to be looking carefully.
Human skeletons are different between men and women but when they find a mummified or badly decomposed corpse oftentimes they have to x-ray it (or boil it to remove the flesh) to examine the bones to figure out if they have a male or female corpse.
Hence the braces.
Re Drusilla: here is from the script of the episode, and takes place in the Miss Edith/Sheila scene:
SPIKE
Darling, are you gonna eat something?
DRUSILLA
Buffy Angel Show
I'm not hungry. I miss Prague.
SPIKE
You nearly died in Prague, Baby.
That idiot mob… this is the place
for us. The Hellmouth'll restore
you. Put color in your cheeks.
Metaphorically speaking.
So, no, according the the dialogue, Spike is taking care of Drusilla, not holding her under a spell.
Looks like you got that new villain you were asking for. The child actor was sprouting up like crazy and wasn't looking the part as much as he had last season, so they decided to go in a different direction.
Vampires get 'generalized' as being essentially like sociopaths/psychopaths in this universe, but as you dig into the lore of specific vampires - there's really more of a scale to it that varies from vampire to vampire. Their age, who turned them, how they were turned, and what they were like as humans can play a part in how they turn out after. Some have more humanity and some have almost none. You will see a variety of examples 😂
"I hope the Annoying One doesn't last the whole season. I hope he dies and new villains arrive."
Boom. 50 minutes later, Spike and Dru smoke him.
I'm gonna start calling you Prophecy Girl. 😉
suspicious isn't it?
@@Nexusofgeeknot really. Lots of us were wanting the Annoying One gone and a new villain at this point when we watched it originally.
Willow..."Ask for some aspirin" and Cordelia, not spotting the sarcasm, does.
Fun fact: The Anointed One was originally supposed to have a much longer character arc, but the young actor had a growth spurt between seasons and they realised that he would look older as the season went on - therefore he was written out.
Also, Dru and Spike's relationship is very unusual for vampires. Spike has an unusual amount of residual humanity within him and it's part of what makes him so dangerous
It's part of why people love him and the key to everything, actually. That will be there.
@@Junejane4 One of many parts.
Love how you're asking the big questions -- some of the things you discussed have definitely been the subject of somebody's Master's thesis on television studies! :-)
I'm so excited to keep watching you reacting to Buffy because OH MY GOD you're asking all the right questions and you don't even know...
I interviewed Juliet Landau (Drusilla) a while back. She's also a director. And I met James Marsters (Spike) at a convention around the same time. Both were very cool and friendly.
Love these reactions. All the predictions and speculations are fantastic to hear. Spike and Drusilla are very cool characters. 🕶
I feel spoiled with these 50 minute videos. Thank you Cass!
Yep, she is going through Buffy quickly and doing a great job of reacting and and analyzing.
@@jameshenner5831 Which is great as far as I'm concerned.
27:30 Sire is a standard term from vampire lore, it's the vampire who turned another, or someone further up. Darla for an example is Angel's sire (as said in the previous season), and assuming the master was Darla's sire the master is also by proxy Angel's sire. Sire is like a vampiric anscestor.
It can also be used as a term for someone in a position of authority.
Hmm - now that I am thinking about it, I wonder if "sire" and "sir" have similar etymology? I will have to research that when I get a chance!
There is a reson why there is only one slayer in all of the world but that is heavy spoiler territory.
School Hard is a fan favourite. Season 2 is my personal favourite season 😊
School Hard is one of my favorite episodes by far
Cass: "I want to be introduced to new villains."
Joss Whedon: "Wish granted."
Oh how I don’t want to spoil anything while internally screaming🤣💀
Rodney had braces. The braces mummy was Rodney, not ‘some girl.’
She’s the first reactor I’ve ever seen have trouble with that part..
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 They do say it, fairly explicitly I think, so Cass must have just zoned out on that specific moment
@@deanna9808 She says she can talk and hear at the same time; and that's fine - I'm not complaining, but it's apparent it doesn't sink in as well when she does that.
Regarding School Hard. At the Bronze, Spike tells a vampire to get something to eat, and then promptly tells Buffy a vampire is eating someone out back.
We are meant to think Spike did this so he could watch Buffy fight and size up her fighting style so he could look for weaknesses and see where she is strong. And also to announce his presence to her.
But he has an anterior motive as well. That vampire that Spike sacrificed to the Slayer is the same vampire who earlier had claimed to be at the Crucifixion. That vampire was a potential rival to Spike for leadership of the vamp gang.
Spike didn't just do it to get a tactical advantage on Buffy, but also to secure himself as the undisputed leader of the vampires in Sunnydale.
Seriously, Buffy now has all the pieces in place to be the greatest show ever.
Which it is.
Spike but it best:
*It's time for a little less ritual and a little more fun around here!*
Glad you are loving Juliet Landau and James Marsters portrayals of Drusilla and Spike, Cass.
Juliet's patents are the famous Martin Landau and Barbara Bain by the way.
Drusilla is played by Juliet Landau, the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau and Emmy-winning actress Barbara Bain.
This is an absolute fan favorite in this series. The introduction of Spike and Druscilla.
❤❤❤
The show kicks into a new gear here, imo
When you watched "Puppet Show", you mentioned that you don't like dolls. From that moment, I was thinking "I can't wait for you to meet Dru!!!"
Her scene with her dolls, and turning Miss Edith around so she couldn't "watch with the rest", is just so delightfully creepy - and the high piano music that is always playing around her is creepy, too! I'm very glad that you like Spike and Dru :)
Regarding Spike running away, if you rewatch that scene, at the start, Buffy is on the ground with Spike standing above her, set to deliver the killing blow. And in the next moment, after grtting surprised by Joyce, he is on the ground with Buffy above him, the tables were turned in that moment, and his backup had all been killed by Buffy or fled so he had to retreat.
Spike may be impulsive, but he is very tactically aware, which is how he defeated 2 Slayers already. It should also be noted that despite his impulsiveness spoiling his original plan, he came 1 Joyce away from killing his 3rd Slayer.
The thing i like about Buffy is that even "filler" episodes usually parallel important themes for buffy's character, so they are always important in a way or an other. Inca mummy girl is the perfect example; of course it suffers a bit for its placement after school hard but they found a way to paralel Ampata's struggles with Buffy's struggles and that alone makes the episode worthy. Also, Oz is introduced so yeah, definitely not a skip episode😁
Love your reactions Cass!
Spike killing the Anointed One was the point in my first viewing when I realized this show was going to be something special. Also, I love all the Die Hard allusions in the episode
like what?
@@Nexusofgeek The whole plot is Die Hard: An innocent group of people at a party is attacked and trapped by a pack of bad guys (led by a witty leader with a foreign accent). A lone wisecracking hero(ine) uses her wits and courage to take out the bad guys and rescue the hostages (who include a member of her family). 😎
@@DanielOrme except she wasn't alone was she? She had help from Angel and to a degree from Joyce at the climax. I am sorry I think the Die Hard allusion is a stretch.
@@NexusofgeekSure...but it was clearly intended to be a callout to Die Hard - hence the name School Hard - it just doesn't mimic it completely. But for example there's crawling around in the ceiling in both, the use ofvdivide and conquer tactics, etc.
@@Nexusofgeek Its 100% intentional lol. No need to stretch. Stuff like Buffy crawling through the air vents, the title, and episode plots are all Die Hard references.
The Slayer is a bigger deal because of the superpowers.
Vampire Angel and Darla were a couple.
The girl in the museum who was a victim wasn't a girl, it was the boy the the braces who woke her up.
Angel _is_ a vampire...😅you meant Angelus.
Buffy is my all-time favorite tv show and I love watching your reactions AND your comments (especially when I know what's ahead). I hope you get through all seven seasons 😊💜 It's gonna be a blast.
I found Sheila's story heartbreaking. Poor thing obviously had a very traumatic life. Serious alcohol and drugs problems, being taken advantage of by creepy old men.... Little mouse was like what,16? 17? So, basically, she has been suffering and struggling, and then she died before she even finished high school, before she had a chance to do something with her life. Maybe, actually have a life, even just a little.
If you look at her story closely, every single one of her lines is soul crushing.
Idk, maybe she just reminds me of somebody . A very special somebody, whom I very fond of.
Jonathan will never forget the touch of that Mummy's hand.
The question "was it the universe that decided there would only be one slayer" is not going to be forgotten, but... I won't say anything more.
Darla mentioned that she and Angel (or rather Angelus) were together for quite some time.
Spike didn't need to drink those guys - only to kill them. And something like, say, a neck snap takes about a second. If you don't have to chase your victim, of course.
I won't read too much into Spike calling Angelus his "sire", if I were you. He also called him "my Yoda", and I'm pretty sure Angel was never an animatronic little goblin. Although with that show you can't really know.
And we say farewell to the Annoying One. Spike and Drusilla are just delightful villains.
I'm ashamed to say it was years, nay decades before I realized "School Hard" was a play on the movie title "Die Hard". And only because someone mentioned it in the comments for another reactor.
that's a theory but I don't think anyone involved with the show has said that is the case, at least none that I have seen in over 25+ years of being a Buffy fan
@@Nexusofgeek It's literally the only way the title actually makes sense.
@@stargazer1682 no could also be they are doing school hard, as Snyder had prescribed.
I was today years old.
There was a reason that the kid was referred to by the fandom as "The Annoying One". And you almost hit the nail on the head at the top of the reaction!
The problem with the Annoying One is that vampires don’t age, but child actors do. So… killing him off was inevitable. But if BTVS was produced TODAY, they could keep him around for longer and use CGI.
0:52 - 1:22 This is just speculation on my part, but my feeling is that the writer (someone named "Ty King," according to Wikipedia) probably didn't really care about Eric and only included him 1) to make Chris look better by comparison so we can buy that he's redeemable and 2) so that there's someone else to kill Cordelia and build the Frankenstein's monster girl after Chris is redeemed and thus there's still something at stake and a reason for Buffy to fight Daryl at the end. I think the reason he got no resolution is because once Daryl was killed in the fire, Eric had served his purpose.
1:52 - 3:03 I hadn't thought of that before, but you make an interesting point about the "one Slayer rule." As for why being a slayer is a bigger deal than being a demon hunter, I assume it's because of the Slayer's superpowers. (Note Buffy's great strength, lack of brusies from fights and talent for sensing vampires and how her strength made Syd think she was a demon, implying that he didn't have that kind of strength since he didn't even consider that she might be another demon hunter like himself.) Also keep in mind that Sunnydale is on a Hellmouth, so it's probably got more vampires, demons and other supernatural baddies than most other places.
8:25 - 9:09 In the seventh episode of the first season, Darla said she that she was in love with Angel and that he used to love her back, and The Master seemed genuinely upset about Darla's death. The rule seems to be that soulless vampires *can* have empathy towards certain individuals, but none of them think human life has inherent value (most of them don't seem to think vampiric unlife has inherent value either, but they can apparently still care about specific fellow vampires).
42:31 - 42:35 Especially since this show takes place in California!
It's eerie how much you are on point in your predictions and speculations (although not all of them!). But case in point: The Annoying One.
Love smart women, looking forward to seeing you enjoy the twists and turns and callbacks in future episodes. And there will be many.
"Smart chicks are so hot"(c)you probably know who
I can quote every spike line from school hard. At 20:28 Buffy doesn’t have any cuts but spike can smell her blood plus early Xander pulled something specific out of Buffys bag think about what they are implying.
Im glad you saw the Bonnie and Clyde vibes. Lots of fun times to come.
It's more like Sid and Nancy but close enough.
This isn't the first time Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green have worked together, they were both in the 1988 film comedy My Stepmother is an Alien which starred Dan Ackroyd and Kim Basinger. Incidently, some of the early Buffy episodes are directed by Bruce Seth Green, but he and Seth are not related!
LOL you can't feed a mummy preservatives? Mummies are bodies preserved in such a way that they last thousands of years--almost as long as twinkies.
I was confused by that part of the video for a moment because in Italian the"preservativi"are the _condoms!_ 😅😅😅
Thanks for the small diatribe on parents who can’t understand their children’s stress. I used to work a Summer Camp at the YMCA as a Site Lead Counselor and I’d cringe every time I’d hear the parents say this……in front of the children. They would run over to the parent, seeing them for the first time after a long day and inevitably they would do the whole “wait until they get a job” stuff. It is so narcissistic for one. Wanting to whine about their stress while belittling theirs to their face. I’d always bring up the same exact argument as you did. Challenges for children aren’t the same as adults and it’s almost silly that it has to be reiterated but for some, it does.
Buffy's purse 😉:
YoYo=innocence of youth
Tampon = normal teenage girl/woman
Steak= no innocence/forget normality
Such two different episodes being grouped together for a reaction.
I don’t this is too spoilery, I’ve kept it vague
Yeah very different in terms of moving the main plot forward and monster of the week. Although, I was worried about how 2 episodes would go, I looked at the episodes for the season and the two parters will be grouped together perfectly, and there are other episodes in the future I think will go well together like surprise and innocence for how this is laid out.
The comments give me a bit of whiplash going back and forth between the two. Wow - Spike and Ampata (pick which one) would make a cute couple! Or was it Sven and Drusilla??
Spike and Drusilla are the fan favourite baddies. They are such a good time.
Is Drusilla a witch? Is Drusilla a vampire? There is only one thing for sure: Drusilla is great.
A "monster" is only a monster when you can destroy it without repercussion. The more that you know what drives the monster and why they are that way, the more difficult it is to feel "righteous" for destroying them.
As for Xander’s Spanish skills upon first meeting Ampata at the bus station, “Ay, Caramba!” was a pretty popular catchphrase at the time thanks to cartoon character Bart Simpson who was very popular in the nineties.
School Hard is generally thought of as one of the key moments when 'Buffy' really begins. Loved your thoughts on how it deviates from the normal monster-of-the-week episodes!
i love drusilla so much - school hard is one of my favourite episodes
Juliette Landau is absolutely amazing as Drusilla.
"i want the annointed one dead and a new villain" it's like you read the synopsis before hitting play
Not me pausing in between eps 3 and 4 to literally go on a Mamba run. I blame you, Cass.
Such a great introduction to Spike and Drusilla.
There can be only one slayer. When a slayer is killed, a potential slayer is 'activated.'
Yes, Angel had his soul returned to him.
you're spoiling.
@@sirmoonslosthismind In season one, both of these facts were established.
@@loopslytle
nope, it establishes that there is only one slayer per "generation", but the finer points are not at all established until later.
@@sirmoonslosthismind 'Generation' can be used figuratively as it does not refer to a specific length of time. In the context of Slayer lore it simply means one-at-a-time.

something that the show will reveal much later and that you are spoiling
2:00 Spoiler for way way in the future when slayers are explained:
The slayers were made, some magic ritual where this power was bound to a teenage girl (Because the ancient watchers who made the slayer thought a teenage girl would be easy to control).
Not a popular opinion nowadays but i loved Chandler from Friends and definitely thought that was Xander's purpose.
I love Chandler from friends too. Except for the smoking.
I find it hilarious when you’re talking about all these ‘classic jokes and tropes’ because, like, this was the ‘90s! This show invented most of the tropes! 😂
Oz! Drusillla! School Hard is a great episode, glad you enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next duo of episodes from you 😊.
The boy the Mummy tries to kiss at the Bronze towards the end is played by Danny Strong.
He is now more of a show creator/writer and has won 2 Emmys. He created Dopesick and co-created Empire. He also did the screen play for Mockingjay
I'm pretty sure the mummy in the museum with braces was the dumb kid who broke the plate.
The body in the museum was Rodney (who had braces).
0:28 Oh this is gonna be good!
I'm glad you picked up on the way the show identifies the mummy girl with Buffy. Not every reactor does. Also how Ampata is (in some ways) a sympathetic villain. This won't be the last one.
For School Hard:
Welcome to the shot in the arm this series got that would keep it going for quite a while. Spike & Druscilla are two of the best characters. All the questions you're asking will be very interesting to see unfold.
Buffy's reputation is simply due to the events in her last school & seeing as she's always around when something goes down is continuing the reputation.
Sire is a term used to describe a maker or mentor. Won't go too deep in that.
Whedon wanted to get rid of the kid, for one he's a kid, not much acting range and he'll grow up and as a vampire he shouldn't. I'm so glad too because it's full on Season 2 from here on out.
James Marsters who played Spike recently did an interview on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum about his time in this world.
The care factor with vampires is more complicated then just feelings from the heart and soul.
As always, you ask all the right questions, meaning we can't answer any of them! 🤐Just know they WILL be answered, they are central to so much of the story.
The Annoying One had to go. Vampires aren't supposed to age, and the kid was growing up fast.
The braces mummy wasthe lid who broke the plate awakening her.
Seth Green is the actor. The singer later wrote the movie American Sniper. The actual band they actors are miming to is Four Star Mary. I became friends with them after I moved to Los Angeles. When they were 14 Seth and Alyson played boyfriend and girlfriend in My Stepmother is an Alien.
He was also a pretty terrible actor--the kid
@@shabadoo25Yeah, the annoying one sucked on several levels..
"Ew did we just see the sockets? By the way have you guys had mambas?" lmao
Drusilla's story will take a while to unpack, however, once you know her full history, you will look back and say "Oh, that's why she did that."
So part of the reason they killed off the annointed one is vampires aren't supposed to age, and the kid was starting puberty
ok but you laughing and thinking about a mummy being protected from preservatives is actually really funny 😂 i never thought about that 😂😂
They explain the origins of the Slayer in depth in later seasons ❤
Cass: "I want to get rid of the Annointed One. We need fresh villains." Queue in Spike and Drusilla! 😉👍
Oh and to let you in on the know, Seth Green goes way, way back with Alyson Hannigan and Sarah Michelle Gellar. They're close friends to this day. They were child actors. Seth and Alyson met around the age of 12. They've worked on a few films together. And with Sarah, they've known each other since they were like 7 years old. Him and her would always run into each other when they were auditioning for commercials. Plus, they also had the same group of friends that they would eventually become friends themselves. And then this show comes along and all three grew closer. Afte the show ended, all three have worked with other a few times on their own shows. Throughout the years they see and meet up with each other sometimes.
Poor Xander, no luck with the Slayer, the praying mantis and now the Inca mummy girl. He definitely has no luck with girls. Will he ever find love?
At least Willow has someone who's actually interested in her and might want to get to know her. Which is really nice. He isn't into the superficial girls like his bandmate is.
Although I can't tell you when, you will see more delving into Slayer lore in the following seasons. Relax, you still have a long way to go.
Wow, talk about getting what you wished for!
21:42 'Sire is an archaic word for 'father', but in the Buffyverse it has a more specific meaning for vampires, you'll find out as we learn more vampire lore.
23:11 They had to kill off the annoying one, because the little boy was visibly growing over the time of filming an episode which he wouldn't to as an undead. That's why we mainly see him sitting down. He was intended to be the 'big bad' certainly for at least the first half of the season, one has to wonder how it would have worked without Spike.
Dru has psychic gifts and is completely loopy. We'll find our more, later.
Building up the Anointed One's role over the end of Season 1 and the first episode of this season.... and then the ending of School Hard. Iconic television.
Girl in every vampire movie or show that I have seen, vampires are always in romantic relationships. I love your reactions to this amazing show.
32:45 Yeah, I think that's pretty much what mummies look like, mummification can slow down decay, but not stop it completely. I've seen at least one real mummy, but it was still covered in bandages. I've seen documentaries about mummies and about frozen corpses.
35:35 Yes Cordelia is hot, although I don't think this is her best look. The actor who plays Oz is Seth Green, probably best known for being Scott Evil in 'Austin Powers'.
Protecting her from The Twinkie🤣🤣🤣🤣 of all the theories I have ever heard of all the episodes of the show, that is probably the best one yet🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg seeing these episodes again, jeez, many things you mention and within the episodes lead to so much more! I constantly go back and forth between Buffy and Spike being my favorite character. Because Buffy is BUFFY, I love her, but I also love Spike! Buffy is the best but I also love Spike!
Not Buffy-related but I had a guy stay with me as an exchange student in high school. I have a brother and that's why it was okay.
Same!
