    It really made me laugh when in the previous episode you were speculating about Veruca and werewolves and her strange connection to Oz, and you said "omg, what if she's... a... (dramatic pause in which I thought you'd figured it out) ...seduction demon!" So close, yet so far.

    The reason you're seeing "scoped out" corners is that you appear to be watching the HD remaster, in 16:9 widescreen. The episodes were intended for 4:3 and didn't worry about catching the lens cowlings in zoom shots since they'd be cropped out anyway. The HD conversion was done lazily without consultation with the original producers and doesn't worry about catching lens cowlings (and visible crew in some shots) because the people who made it were cheap and didn't care. The HD version also left out a lot of color correction done by the producers for the broadcast version.
    You can find the proper 4:3 version online and should look for it, it's better in every way.

    • @coreyissus
      @coreyissus 6 месяцев назад +6

      Yeah the method she has access to and recording set up for right now is streaming, and she only has the Hulu streaming options for her so that’s what she uses (:
      Edit: (but i totally agree on the remaster problems and everything lol)

      The original producers made widescreen versions of seasons 4 to 7 for the original international release. Those ones were done properly.

    • @odkres
      @odkres 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@kevinsmith5287No, more like the studio & distributors released the the international DVDs in 16:9 because they didn't ask the people who actually made the show for any input. If they were done "properly" they would've been in 4:3 and not have crew members visible. (It's frankly not THAT big of a deal for me, and it doesn't affect my viewing experience, but it would just be nice if my local DVDs were the intended ratio)
      From Wikipedia:
      "While the first three seasons were shot exclusively in 4:3, beginning with the fourth season the series was shot with a 16:9 safe area, though according to Joss Whedon the series was intended to be shown in a 4:3 ratio, stating 'Adding space to the sides simply for the sake of trying to look more cinematic would betray the very exact mise-en-scene I was trying to create. I am a purist, and this is the purest way to watch Buffy. I have resisted the effort to letterbox Buffy from the start and always will, because that is not the show we shot.'[1] The extra material in the widescreen versions is never important for the plot, although it gives additional views of the sets and backgrounds.
      Beginning in season four, the Region 2 and 4 DVDs include an open matte 16:9 version of the television show. The Region 1 DVDs include the standard format (4:3) version.
      The reason for this difference is that the Region 2 and 4 DVDs were released before the Region 1 DVDs, with less involvement from Mutant Enemy Productions."

    • @kevinsmith5287
      @kevinsmith5287 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@odkres That's interesting. I stand partially corrected. I have the original international releases (I'm old). They're not high def, but were done properly. Correct colour balance/filters, no crew members in the shot, and no strange rounded corners.
      I've seen the later hi-def conversion and agree with everyone that they're an abomination.

    • @echalone

    According to Seth Green, he asked if he could be written out of the show and have his contract dismissed so he could persue other opportunities. Apparently they had plans to flesh Oz out into a more important part of the show but it never happened and despite being in the main credits he had hardly any lines in his scripts for the entire season so he was like nah..

    I love your theory about the vignette evoking a sense of being watched, but unfortunately, the truth is the it's merely an effect caused by going from the original 4:3 aspect ratio to a 16:9 aspect ratio when the show was not shot to account for the extra space on the sides.

    • @volleyriver528
      @volleyriver528 6 месяцев назад +5

      that seemed crazy to me until i checked, the ones i'm watching are 16:9 and the establishing shot at 10:20 is different, there's no vignette effect and it's been cropped, i see less of the top and sides of the trees. you must be right, and i guess different 16:9 versions took different approaches?

    • @Berserker976
      @Berserker976 6 месяцев назад +11

      @@volleyriver528Exactly right. Some of the "HD" versions simply opened up the image, revealing more than was ever intended to be shown, and some cropped the top and bottom of the original 4:3 image, revealing less than was intended to be shown. The unfortunate truth is that Buffy has never gotten a good remaster, and it's harder and harder to find the DVD versions that keep the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

      Seth Green was probably the one Buffy actor that was already famous before joining (with the exception of Head who, however, was mostly known just in the UK).
      It's a good thing Whedon went for storyline over star power, though. 😅
      Just look at the X-Men movies, where Mystique is suddenly at the centre of everything, she's a founding member of the X-Men, she is key to two or three movies's plotlines, has a relationship with Magneto and is also Xavier's adoptive sister, for some reason... just because Jennifer Lawrence is hot and popular and they had to put her front and centre. 😂
      I felt bad when Oz left, but knowing he was pursuing bigger roles means that him going away was the best thing for him *_and_* for the show.

    From a writing standpoint, it's great timing to have Oz confronted by this mirror self. I think a lot of people discover a more complete picture of themselves in the years following high school graduation. Oz is just following the time-honoured tradition of being a hermit and wrestling with his inner self... how very Bruce Banner of him 😂

    • @sallyannchappell5671
      @sallyannchappell5671 6 месяцев назад

      I think this episode tied with the actor going off and doing other projects. I am reluctant to invest in your idea of Oz searching for his inner self, his quest for inner peace in a monastery. Up to this point of meeting Veruca, Oz has let things wash over him, he is highly laid back and ‘taciturn’. He recovered fairly quickly from Willow’s betrayal which would have been the most significant thing to happen to him in the series, even more than being shot or being turned. He already has inner peace, self reflection and resignation to the inevitable, He is almost the hippie character, the Maynard Crebbs of the Buffyverse. This episode and the ones with Veruca, were written to allow the actor to leave the series, go off and be Mini Me of something and return when finished with the movie. I think? Don’t quote me, but that is my best guess for him going off character so much.

    • @kojiromusashi13
      @kojiromusashi13 6 месяцев назад

      @sallyannchappell5671 I understand the meta reasons for the character doing what he does. Having said that, I think it makes sense that another werewolf is able to see something in Oz that nobody else can and calls him out on it. Even though he rejects her outlook, he recognizes that the wolf is a part of who he is.
      We see in the last Halloween episode that Oz fears losing control and hurting others, and we see (yet again) in this episode that literal self-restraint isn't enough to prevent that. While I think Oz could have left under more ideal circumstances, it's sort of inevitable that he'd have to figure out a more permanent solution.

    Alyson Hannigan's performance in this episode breaks my heart. It was interesting to see Oz get really angry in this. When he screamed at Veruca, I was shocked as a teen. I think it's ultimately good that Oz decides to go on this journey because I don't think he really examined the emotional realities of him being a werewolf. He just practiced radical acceptance (which is good), as long as you take the time later to really consider what something means to you, and I don't think Oz did that. He certainly thought about the ways in which he needed to accommodate the change in his life, and how to protect people, but I think he refused to dwell on anything else, because he couldn't change his circumstance.

    The video effect of darkening the corners is called a vignette. And it can get heavily overused by people producing youtube videos. But seems to be used sparingly to good effect in this episode.
    Maybe one reason "Beer Bad" looks so bad is because it is directly before one of the best runs of episodes in the show.

    First of all Beer Bad is a fun one off in my opinion. It’s so ridiculous i enjoy it. It’s no surprise this entire situation with veruca caused Oz to question everything about being a werewolf. Since the day he found out he was a werewolf he’s never encountered another one. Then he meets veruca and she opens up that entire world for him in ways he’s never had the reason to think about. I totally believe he would want to go off and try and figure things out. This episode always makes me tear up at the end. I just love Willow and Oz as a couple so it’s super sad to see Oz leave.

    So your theory about the edges being blurred out is interesting, but you need to remember that this was shown in 4:3 dimensions. It was also shot in 16:9, but it wasn’t meant to be shown in that dimension. The blurring effect should not be there because it is technically out of frame of the intended dimension.

    Your reactions are a joy to watch. You are really getting in tune with the pacing and viewpoints of the episodes. You are doing a good job staying focused on BTVS but it is so difficult when you have seen other shows and have their plots and concepts previously viewed and left in your memories. Your observation about werewolf imprinting?? Is your go to thoughts based on other stories and supernatural shows. Luckily for us that saw this when it aired it was all new with little expectations of what would come next. Basically the vampire, werewolf, and demon lore was basic and limited to old black and white or cheesy Hammer Horror films. We had learned that this was cool, hip, and new and to just let it play out and it would make sense. This was all so new that it wrote the playbook and all of the movies, novels, and television shows used Buffy has the new standard operating procedure.
    Keep your sharing your thoughts and observations. One of the points that makes you different and interesting.

    Good catch in the vignette style transitions. You are the first reactor I have seen catch that so far. Rifle Scopes tend to be much more rounded then the vignette style which is more ovoid, but periscopes would give a slightly more ovoid view and they are used by special forces (or commandos) to see while remaining hidden behind cover, so is a good way to show the spying like nature of these commandos.

      it's definitely a valid perspective, but it's a tricky issue overall. food is a big part of life and a valid thing to bond over, and some people don't let themselves eat enough and are unhealthy because of that. but certainly, you shouldn't need to feel attacked if you need to be careful to maintain a healthy weight. different people are different so as i said, tricky. probably something people shouldn't generalize about, no matter what their opinion.

      Well a werewolf would tend to be a carnivore, and carnivores are typically not overweight throughout the animal kingdom… a fact overlooked by people who think meat makes you fat. It’s really the overconsumption of sugars and carbohydrates that typically causes weight gain. The french fries and coke are way worse for you than the burger that those things are often served alongside.

    It was always the case with Oz that once the Wolf had taken over he had absolutely no control whatsoever over anything. Oz had best intentions trying to keep Veruca from doing any more harm, but of course this compromises himself. The only mistake he makes here is not telling Buffy what had happened, it could have been all so different. The ending was a big blow, as Willow and Oz were without doubt the nicest couple ever in The Buffyverse, but as with every relationship in this show it's never easy, there is always pain in it. By leaving Oz is showing his total love for Willow, as he knows things will always be that way once he is under the influence of The Wolf. A sad episode for fans, but once again adding the the drama of the show. It is because Oz loves Willow so much he knows he has to leave because he has no control over the wolf, and knows that in the long term he will only harm Willow. It's a shame to see Oz go too cos of his hair, cos Seth Green had the greatest hair in the show from Red to Blonde to Black etc, but it could never be as good as his hair when he was in the X-Files episode Deep Throat, now that was hair.

    As for Season 4.... It was hard for Mutant Enemy. Suddenly they had 2 shows, with different writers (Buffy upstairs, Angel downstairs), but: Angel first 6 episodes had Buffy writers before Angel team took over; Angel writers were pretty much new and by the end of the year only one writer survived (of course Tim Minear) so Greenwalt (showrunner) and Joss (overall boss) had a lot of work; Joss pretty much ran Buffy but with time for Angel too. He promoted Marti as number 2 so she/the show needed time to adjust from Greenwalt to Noxon as number 2. Question is both shows ended with meh storylines but great individual episodes. Joss changed his approach for S5.

    "Beer Bad" is below average, especially for what the show became after season 1. Though the really bad thing about it was that it was written purposefully to try and grab government money for its anti-drug messaging (being anti-sex was just the bonus). The attempt was so inept that they reportedly failed at that as well.

    I don't feel enough fans see Oz's perspective in this episode because Willow being an original four character has her perspective more on display.
    Behind the scenes Seth Green was getting job offers, as well as turning some of them down, while becoming a more popular actor. So, when S4 came along, he met with the writers to talk to them about Oz's role in the series. It was decided that his movie offers would be more lucrative than trying to make Oz a more permanent person to the Scoobies, which wasn't Oz's forte. That is why this episode was written. After the writers realized they weren't going to have the actor available the rest of the season they wrote they had hoped would be a season-long arc into one episode.
    I've seen so many people blame Oz for what happens in this episode (especially the sex when they aren't werewolves), but the point of his arc since _Living Conditions_ is that, ""The wolf is inside [him] all the time, and [he doesn't] know where that line is anymore between [him] and it." The werewolf has control over him and has been slowly taking control since that episode. Fans cannot guarantee when Oz has been in control and when the werewolf has been in control, especially at the height of ID emotions. Not really at any time since Veruca triggered him in the same way post sex triggered Angel's curse. Willow assumes Veruca dying means things can go back to before Oz ever saw her, but the problem isn't Veruca. She just allowed the wolf to gain an upper hand (for use of a better phrase) over Oz, which was always going to happen eventually. Even as Oz is saying goodbye at the end, Willow still doesn't get that (still making a wrong assumption about Oz feeling something for Veruca) and won't take responsibility for attempting the spell on taking away Oz's ability to love, which is why I dislike her asking Oz, "Don't you love me anymore?" Oz had to leave because of his werewolf being out of control, but also because Willow attempted a spell he wasn't even aware of to take his ability to love away. Relationship-wise, it doesn't matter that she stopped, it matters that she was willing to do so (to the point of getting that far into the spell) in the first place. Their relationship had problems beyond the werewolf and Veruca if that was Willow's response and they weren't properly communicating.
    I think the Scoobies made a mistake now that they have a new Oz/werewolf cage after the high school blew up. They stopped watching him. It wouldn't have stopped the overall Werewolf/Oz problem, but it could have prolonged it, later allowing a different trigger, besides Veruca, to set off the werewolf gaining control.
    I don't mind Buffy being there for Willow, but I think this episode showed how much an outsider to the rest of the group Oz is. In _Lover's Walk,_ Buffy comforts Willow after she finds out Oz needs time and space for Willow's indiscretion. In this episode, Buffy looks at Oz point blank and says, "Now might be a good time for your trademark stoicism." It even says a lot that Xander doesn't ask Oz what's going on after Willow asks him guy territory questions. It shows Oz wasn't a friend to anyone in the group. Willow cheated and Oz was out of the group. When the werewolf had issues, Willow assumed Oz cheated and the group treats him badly for it. Even back in _Becoming Part 2,_ Oz says, "Okay, I pretty much missed out on some stuff, didn't I? Because this is all making the kind of sense that's... not." He wasn't really connected to anyone other than being Willow's boyfriend.
    Buffy told Oz that had she caught Veruca, she would have put said werewolf in the same cage with Oz, resulting in the same/similar outcome as what happened. Oz admitting to the group what was going on wouldn't have changed much, if anything. Had Seth Green stayed for a whole S4 leaving arc, like what the writers hoped when he decided movies offers were more lucrative, Oz probably would have admitted what was happening to the group. In that scenario, fans would see the slow deterioration of Oz and Willow's relationship before he left town. This way was just more quick. And on top of that, even if things had changed, the wolf was still triggered as of _Living Conditions,_ and killing Veruca doesn't solve anything. Oz, by the point in this episode of when he would've told the group what was happening, has already been losing too much control. Leaving town was his only option. Telling Buffy and forcing her to find somewhere else for Veruca (not easy as Buffy would have come up with that herself if she had another place for a second werewolf) wouldn't have solved anything. Gaining a semblance of control back also involved killing Veruca, which was difficult with the wolf slowly gaining control. It took Willow being in danger for Oz to have temporary control as a wolf, which was gone the second Veruca was dead. And, it also didn't take away the overall problem.
    This is a fantastic episode with so many nuances concerning the Willow/Oz relationship. But I identify with what Oz is going through far more than what Willow is going through.

      I don't think Oz even thought it was possible for his "wolf side" to influence his "human side" until Veruca made him question it for the first time. His lines at the end saying that he doesn't know were the line between him and "it" is, is key here I think. He is probably wondering if he decided to not tell Buffy/Willow, or if that was "the wolf inside" making the decision to protect itself or Veruca. And if "the wolf" can influence him in that way, how else has it been influencing him this whole time? It's a scary thing to realize that there's a chance you're not in control of your actions or even your thoughts and there's no real way to be sure either way.
      Also, it's pretty reasonable for him to not tell them, if Veruca has friends that know about her, he wouldn't want her to tell them he's a werewolf. If we're taking the whole romance part out of it, if they were just new friends with a lot in common, him revealing her secret would make him kind of an asshole. Buffy being the Slayer makes things more complicated, but still.

    "Beer Bad" is also one of my least favorite episodes as well, but I still like watching it. It's just low ranking because I think that overall Buffy doesn't have many "bad" episodes.

    "Bad Eggs" is maybe my least favourite episode of the whole show. But I guess Beer Bad is a popular pick for worst episode for a lot of people. I actually quite like "Go Fish" too, which is also often a pick for worst episode.
    I think there are just some episodes which get hated on, and become the go-to answer for people to say that about, and Beer Bad just happens to be one of them. I think Xander's job, they way the smart guys get their comeuppance being turned into cavemen by the beer straight after they belittled Xander, the end of Buffy feeling bad about Parker and SMG having a lot of fun being cave-Buffy are all fun stuff from that episode.

    Season 4 is odd and off balance because it's really the transition season. 1-3 was the high school / Angel arc, which had a generally lighter tone. 5-7 is a much different / darker tone but cohesive in it's themes (you'll see when you get there). 4 is kind of the bridge between the two. It has the lowest lows in the Buffy series, but it also has an episode coming up that's one of not only the best Buffy episodes, but one of the best episodes in tv history. The main baddy story for 4 is by far the worst, but just know on the other side is 3 incredible ramping up seasons of Buffy to come.

    I get Oz's reasoning for wanting to go find a cure or solution to the wolf, but if you really love someone you can find a way. Long distance relationships are hard but doable. Cheating on Willow, blowing up at her over it and then just unilaterally ditching was a pretty terrible way to handle it. Though one of the very few flaws Oz was actually given in the writing is that he tries to handle things alone without asking for help so it makes sense for him.

    Bad Eggs and Teacher's Pet are the worst episodes of the series, Imo.
    I like Beer Bad, because it closed out the arc of Buffy pinning over that loser, and it set up the conclusion of this story arc of Willow and Oz.
    When I tell you, my heart shattered to pieces when they broke up at the end of this episode.🥺😥😪😫😭
    I love them so much...and to see Alyson pull at my heart strings. She always gets me going in tears. She is so good. Her and Seth did this episode justice, because you could feel the ache from both of them.

    Beer Bad takes extra crap because of its origins in a government propaganda program against alcohol. It's not close to the worst episode of the series. It's not even the worst of this season (4x18 takes that honor by a mile).

    Beer Bad was going for a government grant money for promoting anti-drug message (it didn't get it). But since getting wasted on campus and making brilliant decisions under influence is so extremely important for the American youth, the episode often gets disproportionate amount of hate for that attempt regardless of how entertaining it is.

It might be an anti drinking propaganda thing from what I've heard, but I think its funny 🤷🏼‍♀️ And Im someone who generally doesn't like the depiction of neanderthals as monsters because they had communities as complex as homo sapiens in the time period, and "cave people" had more egalatarian communities than we do now.
