She'd be covering his outfit in every episode for at least the first four seasons. He almost always got the short end of the stick fashion-wise - which made sense, given his terrible home life - until he held down a job that paid decently and was presumably able to stop relying on whatever second hand stuff was available at the time.

Buffy is also dressed as a good lil girl in early to mid season 3 to greater show the divide between her and Faith.
Yeah I agree! They def wanted to underline that difference but I think their characters would’ve been enough of a difference regardless haha
the fandom is still verrryyyy active, there are tons of Buffy reactors on RUclips and there are a lot of essay videos on the show too; I recommend Passion of the nerd's episode guides, they get better and better with time (he hasn't done the whole show yet, he's very sparse with the videos lately) but he basically metabolizes a lot of what the Buffy studies have produced throughout the years and synthetizes it into great (and humorous) analyses of about 10 to 30 min videos about each episode. I think you should watch at least the videos about your fav episodes to see if you like them.
I'll check out those vids that they made on seasons that I already took notes on(I try to not see anyones opinions on shows before I form my own hehe)

@@LisaFevral I'd love to see you do some Disney videos like ranking the signature dresses or just talking about one project at a time, some scifi/fantasy ones like Farscape, Star Wars etc. Or just more shows in general. Talking about these hyper stylized outfits from a realistic standpoint is so inspiring. The world needs s'more whimsy

16:45 i kinda think that in season 4 Buffy’s outfits generally had less edge, cause she was in a stable lovey-dovey relationship with Riley, who was the typical basic good American citizen archetype

What I enjoy about the Buffy styling over all is that there is a pretty large variety of styles on the characters that works with their personality but it never feels like a costume.
Low bar perhaps, but with teen media I feel it happens too often that styling will fall into stereotypes/Halloween costume territory. For example Faith could have easily been styled as a stereotypical punk or goth but they made her real. Same even with the one off vampires and such!

Love your analysis on the outfits! I think Buffy’s outfits often reflect how she’s doing in life, like how she often wears overalls when she’s sad. I read somewhere that heir hairstyles also reflect what she is going through, and having watched the show many times I noticed how in the funny/quirky episodes (mainly season 4) she often wears crimped/curly hair.

Yes! I enjoy aspects of the other characters on Buffy, but it’s one of the few ensemble shows where the main character IS the best character. Would protect and defend Buffy at all costs.

14:37 that's actually a pretty spot-on early / mid-90s look, especially with the styling of the hair!
It's just that tricky spot you get into where the earlier part of a decade looks more like the decade before, and as a character who's supposed to be a younger almost kid at that point, it makes sense that her fashion would not be on the absolute cutting edge of 1995 fashion.
Also yes please to the full on deep dive. This show was also before my time but I have always loved it and the early years seasons are my favorite specifically because of the fashion

You should watch Angel too :) !! Drusilla shows up again, and there's some background and world building, like you said you wanted. Cordelia is also in Angel, with great outfits and interesting hairstyles. If you're not a huge fan of Angel, still give the show a try because I actually disliked Angel while watching Buffy but then I started watching Angel and now I really enjoy his character

Im also in the Xander slander boat. He was so annoying, I get it highschool has a lot of confusing hormones, but a lot of the time he's just kinda there as a pick me first for Buffy, and when he gets with Cordi its kinda cute, but then he's gotta fuck it up with Willow when objectively Willow and Oz are a much better pairing. And just in general i think a lot of it is the Joss Wheadon sense of humor that bleeds through the character that is ver grating
I always hated the pink dress look (10:14) Buffy wore to her birthday party but in retrospect, I think it represents how her understanding of herself and her place amongst her friends is totally gone after LA. She's lost and trying desperately to define who she is. The fugly dress reflects that.

re: the styling of her 15-year-old self looking 80s, this is likely a nod to the original movie which came out in 1992, where there was a lot of holdover fashion from the 80s
Being an old lady (I am the same age as Buffy's little sister), in the early 90's to mid-90's we still did looks that seemed a bit similar to the 80's. It's accurate.

Before she was in Buffy, the woman who played Jenny was Prince's spokesperson - if you look up Diamond and Pearl you can see her in a lot of high fashion outfits through a lot of amazing music videos.

I love her clothes the most in season 1. She does a lot of dresses with leather jackets and knee high boots. Very freaking 90s for sure. I tried to dress just like her back then which I was a freshman when the show started

I think the prom dress needed some jewelry... a nice statement necklace if the hair was down, not too big, but more than a tiny pendant, and one that would catch and refract light. If the hair was up... some simple dangling earrings with a touch of sparkle. The first kind I imagined was something like three slender chains of various lengths with a little gemstone at the end of each.

10:53 - I think the dress is supposed to referencing a Regency style, where the waist is lifted to not far under the bust and the fitting is, indeed, relaxed. Regency period clothing took its influence from Ancient Greek/Roman styles. So that would explain, I think, the fit, which, if I'm right, is as intended.

you're so right about the costuming of the show! 26:14 It's something I've realized more over the past few years, especially as I've also checked out some more recent shows and contemporarily set movies, which seem really one-note to me. If a character does have a evident style it's usually something that can be categorized in one word and is pretty stereotypical and less authentic- not only for the character and presentation of the show. The Buffyverse is in my top 10 shows!
omg you mentioning The Vampire Diaries- I haven't even finished that & The Originals but everyone wears the same few types of outfits and it irks me so badly. namely the Elena-core look and the shirt + jeans + leather jacket look. stooop. I particularly hated that latter look on Rebekah because she seemed like a fashion girly in scenes that take place in the past.
