Yes my mum loved Bratz too and was super supportive of me having them and she bought me so many dolls, the main reason was also the representation with different skin colours, hair colours and they were perfect for the modern era over barbie who was at the time not at all inclusive and conservative

Wasn’t Yasmin supposed to be Middle Eastern? I heard that because the creator Isaac Larian is Iranian-Jewish himself, he wanted representation for his daughter so he intended for her to be Iranian. Either way the way she was presented in the live action was completely incorrect.

A Bratz analysis is a real big coincidence ahah I went to a anime/comic con event last weekend, in there I've found a group of 4 gals dressed as Bratz. yeah I think you're right to an extent, I think it's kind of a thing that they were not 100% in on, bc technically Bratz wear things that were considered "bimbo" back then, while they also made these characters that were ridiculed for it... Also, the Bratz website was AMAZING!! It had all the characters(Fianna, Nevra, Felicia and so on) with their favorite number, music, favorite color and nickname. Also, all the albums with the name of the songs and much more. So much personality I used to write all of it in my Bratz journal I was obsessed! I remember Yasmin loved Black Eyed Peas so I started to love Black Eyed Peas. My whole childhood and personality was these girls ♥️

Hearing about the 13 yr old Tahitian "wife" was upsetting, I had to look up what happened to her. Was glad to read after that creep left Tahiti she remarried someone closer to her age, had 2 sons and seems to have moved on with her life without giving a crap about Gauguin. She got to live a little over 2 decades free of him before the Spanish flu got her. Gauguin even returned 2 years after leaving and tried to get back with her, then already remarried, to which she pretty much went "ew no", which just warms my heart to imagine. Also, extra props for the "loading... it takes time to look this good" Easter egg. That was such a fun detail from the Bratz website. Going to that website was my first internet experience, right before Googling anime characters. And those silver pants are so y2k and the perfect Bratz combo with the chunky pumps. The backlash at Bratz was so superficial. I do get why people got that knee-jerk reaction, it's the lips and the heavy eyeshadow and the assumptions you make of that, but that's all it was, assumptions. The first batch of Bratz outfits were actually really modest with lots of long sleeves/bottoms and layers, and the ethos which was really wholesome was completely ignored. It's like people that want to cancel a podcast or ban a book/movie without ever actually watching it, just going on what other people say. Also want to say how amazing you are for absolutely slaying in making these video essays in a second language. Learning another language is hard enough much less succeeding in becoming a content creator in that language. It's also a nice to hear commentary about these childhood IPs from another non-American.

I started my period very early (ten) and my hips came in too quickly. I wore very tight sports bras and biker shorts under my clothes to keep everything in place. My teachers still complained whenever we had to run. I was always pulled aside to sit down. I always got check marks. Kind of a C grade. (elementary school, we had plus, checks, or negatives.) My mom didn't want me to wear dresses, skirts, shorts... Even pants. I couldn't win. In church, the Sunday school teacher would direct certain scriptures at me and I was the type of kid who looked down at my feet when I spoke. In middle school, a security guard (?) approached me in the middle of class to tell me my v-neck shirt was inappropriate. I had at least three safety pins on that shirt. -.- I was given a SEE THROUGH yellow shirt to wear. I cried and I was sent to the office. Then in highschool, the principal sent one of my friends to see if I was wearing shorts under my skirt that went a little PAST my knees. 🤦 Other girls wore their skirts were shorter than mine but my skirt was the issue. I still don't know why I was treated like a skank. Teenagers have hips. Women have hips. Even girls have hips. It's not a crime. People are just mean.

Maybe it’s because many men want to be attracted to females on their own terms, not to children or in professional circumstances, and rather than control their behavior or deal with the fact they have pedophilic feelings, they blame the girls for “tempting” them, and try to overly control their bodies. It may also be an expression of power and control, as a “I want to control what is seen of your body”. Many girls report older men flirting with them before they really hit puberty, so I think men being attracted to young girls is somewhat common, and as its a crime, they blame girls for their temptations. It’s really backwards and doesn’t place blame where it’s due, and it forces sexuality and the idea of their bodies as sexual objects to girls not ready to explore it.

The comments people made about Bratz was completely based off their looks they never paid enough attention to see the good lessons they taught. Also adding onto the Genie Magic convo, as a Pakistani boy I was super happy seeing these designs in a mainstream doll brand because the dolls incorporated details I’d see in the Bollywood media my family watched. I do love how the designers took south Asian/Middle Eastern culture and mixed it with the sassy Bratz style, I think not specifying the culture left a lot of ambiguity for a variety of consumers to resonate with.
yeah I think they were trying to be more relatable to more people, especially with the owner of the brand being of a Iranian descent, but I also get when people get offended(especially when its immigrants in the west), bc cultural things are sometimes made fun of when ppl participate in them, unless it's being appropriated by someone North American and it becomes "cool". He wanted his culture to be in his brand so i guess thats where they got the inspiration from, i have a lot of persian friends and i know the carpet is a classic persian carpet. The clothes are middle eastern / North African and as a Moroccan & iraqi this is what we wear on our holidays and weddings and stuff No culture appropriation or stuff its all the ceo culture he wanted to show in his brand and we middle easterns love that:)

my mom never got me bratz just because of the heavy makeup. she didn’t want me to feel like i had to look like that.. she had issues with monster high for how skinny every girl was too lol. i still had easily 60+ monster high dolls. i’m glad she did that tbh. i didn’t really feel interested in makeup or like it was something i needed until i was much older, and i think she helped that. i think there’s a way to criticize the way that more revealing clothing and makeup is peddled to extremely young girls without victim blaming. i remember trying to find swimsuits with my mom as a young girl and not being able to find ones that would cover everything i wanted to be covered. thanks again to my mom for custom ordering my swimsuits so i didn’t feel so uncomfortable. companies and corporations should be held responsible for pushing certain standards on children, not the children themselves.

First of all, as someone how grew up with Bratz you did an incredible research. That said, I will give my opinion on several aspects: -When I was a kid, I never got to hear anyone around me say that Bratz looked "inappropriate", so to recently hear people saying their parents wouldn't let them have Bratz for that reason, was something that surprised me a lot. -I don't know at what age I started to like/play with Bratz, but I can assure u that I was very young. And I remember that one of the reasons why I loved Bratz was bc I saw myself in them. I have big lips (which my mom always compared to bratz' lips) and brown skin (same as Sasha and especially Yasmin!). I don’t like how the guy who played Dylan is white when he’s not. He’s mixed race I think, kind of white passing maybe and the show gave him more of a white hairstyle, despite he has a short curly Caesar haircut and his voice actor is black as well. I also think Eitan is Asian, but I could be wrong. I think he looks more like Cameron (which I think he should have been deaf and Cloe’s love interest, since she is the tripping queen). But, now looking back it's really culturally insensitive, thanks for teaching me those hats are called ushankas, many years ago I got one in a charuty shop from the USSR which blew my mind (how did it get to some random countryside charity shop in England) To answer your question, I would VERY much like to keep the names of things and the appropriate names in media, it's important to have that correct so that we dont make mistakes again in the future. Because realistically it was genie magic that took me to learning about Indian and Nepalese *fashions*, and luckily I lived in an area with a lot of nepalese people, I had a lot of Nepalese friends (and have visited Nepal since too) so I got to learn about their culture and their fabrics from the people who owned the fabric and clothing shops and were also passionate about it as part of their own culture. Lucky for me, yes, I learnt a lot from the right sources, I even have full traditional outfits from dhaka fabric made custom and khussa shoes (which are from many countries, notably in my area were worn by Pakistani people and Indian people) too; directly from people that taught me about them, or from Nepal after learning about their history and cultural importance. However, for those that dont have that access to learn about how culturally important it is (or isnt) then how do they learn where the line is? Thats why it's so important, if youre profiting off of their culture and fashions, the LEAST they could do is learn about it and use that time to pass that forward

It was outrageous!!! And parents got mad at their own kids too. I’ll never forget my mum blowing up at me when I saw Bratz dolls for the first time and told her I liked them. I was a tomboy so I wasn’t really interested in dolls as much but the other reason was that they almost all looked the same at that time (blonde hair blue eyes girly outfits etc.) which just wasn’t realistic to me. I liked Bratz because to me they were realistic because they looked different to each other. I also liked that their outfits weren’t just “girly”. And even though I’m white I looked at Yasmin and I related to her instantly because she was the closest I’d seen to a doll having red hair!! But my mum had a go at me, in the middle of the shop, about how I was a terrible and disgusting person for liking “slutty dolls”. I grew up in evangelical christianity, not in the US though, and the sexualisation of girls and minorities was so out of hand and I feel like Bratz dolls were the perfect target for that mentality. I always wished I could have Bratz dolls!!

A Bratz analysis is a real big coincidence ahah I went to a anime/comic con event last weekend, in there I've found a group of 4 gals dressed as Bratz. Hearing about the 13 yr old Tahitian "wife" was upsetting, I had to look up what happened to her. Was glad to read after that creep left Tahiti she remarried someone closer to her age, had 2 sons and seems to have moved on with her life without giving a crap about Gauguin. She got to live a little over 2 decades free of him before the Spanish flu got her. Gauguin even returned 2 years after leaving and tried to get back with her, then already remarried, to which she pretty much went "ew no", which just warms my heart to imagine.
Also, extra props for the "loading... it takes time to look this good" Easter egg. That was such a fun detail from the Bratz website. Going to that website was my first internet experience, right before Googling anime characters. And those silver pants are so y2k and the perfect Bratz combo with the chunky pumps.
The backlash at Bratz was so superficial. I do get why people got that knee-jerk reaction, it's the lips and the heavy eyeshadow and the assumptions you make of that, but that's all it was, assumptions. The first batch of Bratz outfits were actually really modest with lots of long sleeves/bottoms and layers, and the ethos which was really wholesome was completely ignored. It's like people that want to cancel a podcast or ban a book/movie without ever actually watching it, just going on what other people say.
Also want to say how amazing you are for absolutely slaying in making these video essays in a second language. Learning another language is hard enough much less succeeding in becoming a content creator in that language. It's also a nice to hear commentary about these childhood IPs from another non-American.

Random comment: Your words about being sexualized as a child made me cry. I kind of know what you went through. I wanted to hug you when I heard your story. 😢 I went to a regular public school and I remember grownups always made me feel embarrassed. I was TALL. Tall was bad. I started my period very early (ten) and my hips came in too quickly. I wore very tight sports bras and biker shorts under my clothes to keep everything in place. My teachers still complained whenever we had to run. I was always pulled aside to sit down. I always got check marks. Kind of a C grade. (elementary school, we had plus, checks, or negatives.) My mom didn't want me to wear dresses, skirts, shorts... Even pants. I couldn't win. In church, the Sunday school teacher would direct certain scriptures at me and I was the type of kid who looked down at my feet when I spoke. In middle school, a security guard (?) approached me in the middle of class to tell me my v-neck shirt was inappropriate. I had at least three safety pins on that shirt. -.- I was given a SEE THROUGH yellow shirt to wear. I cried and I was sent to the office. Then in highschool, the principal sent one of my friends to see if I was wearing shorts under my skirt that went a little PAST my knees. 🤦 Other girls wore their skirts were shorter than mine but my skirt was the issue. I still don't know why I was treated like a skank. Teenagers have hips. Women have hips. Even girls have hips. It's not a crime.

Maybe it’s because many men want to be attracted to females on their own terms, not to children or in professional circumstances, and rather than control their behavior or deal with the fact they have pedophilic feelings, they blame the girls for “tempting” them, and try to overly control their bodies. It may also be an expression of power and control, as a “I want to control what is seen of your body”. Many girls report older men flirting with them before they really hit puberty, so I think men being attracted to young girls is somewhat common, and as its a crime, they blame girls for their temptations. It’s really backwards and doesn’t place blame where it’s due, and it forces sexuality and the idea of their bodies as sexual objects to girls not ready to explore it.

This was SUCH an interesting video I loved every bit of it! And as an OG Bratz fan I’m so glad you came out of this as a Bratz Stan hahaha. The comments people made about Bratz was completely based off their looks they never paid enough attention to see the good lessons they taught. Also adding onto the Genie Magic convo, as a Pakistani boy I was super happy seeing these designs in a mainstream doll brand because the dolls incorporated details I’d see in the Bollywood media my family watched. I do love how the designers took south Asian/Middle Eastern culture and mixed it with the sassy Bratz style, I think not specifying the culture left a lot of ambiguity for a variety of consumers to resonate with.
yeah I think they were trying to be more relatable to more people, especially with the owner of the brand being of a Iranian descent, but I also get when people get offended(especially when its immigrants in the west), bc cultural things are sometimes made fun of when ppl participate in them, unless it's being appropriated by someone North American and it becomes "cool". In this case I don't think they were trying to make fun of the cultures they referenced, but you know, it's a bit of a complicated topic for me haha

I'd like to add that I love how those adults criticize young girls for wearing "adult" clothing, and then they'll turn around and tell them to stop being so childish and to stop liking childish things- like the whole reason why I started wearing those types of clothes is because I was afraid of being judged for dressing my age. I completely agree that they shouldn't be sexualized, but I think it's important to note that a lot of kids started dressing older because adults will relentlessly bully kids for having interests, especially on the internet.

I wanted to add something about what u said about the genie magic dolls- the ceo of bratz is persian jew grew up in Iran and left to the us. He wanted his culture to be in his brand so i guess thats where they got the inspiration from, i have a lot of persian friends and i know the carpet is a classic persian carpet. The clothes are middle eastern / North African and as a Moroccan & iraqi this is what we wear on our holidays and weddings and stuff
No culture appropriation or stuff its all the ceo culture he wanted to show in his brand and we middle easterns love that:)

As a girl in Brazil, I was always told to stop having fun because "men" and "boys" were looking at me. I remember once I offered a male cousin of mine if he wanted a condiment, only to have my father flip out at me and GROUND ME. I grew up on BRATZ and as a (mixed race, South-East) Asian, my representation was always the Jade archetype (which I think has been reproduced by every other teen-focused media after the BRATZ craze) and what you said about your relationship with r*pe culture as a child and the orientalist foundations of people's outrage towards non-White bodies is so ‼️‼️‼️ the fear of simply having a body still lives in me, and it's taken me so many years of adulthood just trying to release it. my mom never got me bratz just because of the heavy makeup. she didn’t want me to feel like i had to look like that.. she had issues with monster high for how skinny every girl was too lol. i still had easily 60+ monster high dolls.
i’m glad she did that tbh. i didn’t really feel interested in makeup or like it was something i needed until i was much older, and i think she helped that.
i think there’s a way to criticize the way that more revealing clothing and makeup is peddled to extremely young girls without victim blaming. i remember trying to find swimsuits with my mom as a young girl and not being able to find ones that would cover everything i wanted to be covered. thanks again to my mom for custom ordering my swimsuits so i didn’t feel so uncomfortable.

as a Morrocan tunisian lybian jew I like the approach they went with my friends and i (from different middle eastern ethnicities) love genie magic because we all feel represented and it doesn't represent just one type of middle eastern people. we can also see this approach in Musa from Winx and Lila from rainbow high. but I can definitely understand where the orientalism accusation comes from.

I loved the movie when I was younger I used to watch it once a month for years, it just gave me a cozy feeling for some reason, even though now that I’m older I realize how bad it is. I still love it though, that scene with Yasmin and Jade in the bathroom while out from under was playing was so emotional and relatable and beautifully awkward 💖 like when you see your ex best friend and you both miss eachother but you try to act chill and it’s just sad and weird 😭
Girly I watched this whole thing from start to finish. As a hardcore bratz fan who loved the show, the games, and the dolls…I can’t explain to you how SEEN I feel with this deep dive. All the little nuanced things (like Jade and Cloe having swapped Rock Angelz outfits) that used to confuse me as a kid…you mentioned. First of all, as someone how grew up with Bratz you did an incredible research. That said, I will give my opinion on several aspects:
-When I was a kid, I never got to hear anyone around me say that Bratz looked "inappropriate", so to recently hear people saying their parents wouldn't let them have Bratz for that reason, was something that surprised me a lot.
-I don't know at what age I started to like/play with Bratz, but I can assure u that I was very young. And I remember that one of the reasons why I loved Bratz was bc I saw myself in them. I have big lips (which my mom always compared to bratz' lips) and brown skin (same as Sasha and especially Yasmin!).
For that same reason, when the bratz live action came out...even though I liked it, I was VERY disappointed that they whitewashed her (Yasmin)😓
-I didnt know burdine was that young! I always though she was in her 50s/60s lol those writers were so nasty.💀

One thing Bratz got right was the music. The music was always so good. I loved the dramatic animation style. It was so funny and over the top
I think Boy’s World would be a good song collaborator with Bratz, since they have White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian members and they definitely hit the Y2K fashion style and have pretty good range to do differently genres of music. And they have partnered with them all ready. But I definitely see Flo too.
I don’t like how the guy who played Dylan is white when he’s not. He’s mixed race I think, kind of white passing maybe and the show gave him more of a white hairstyle, despite he has a short curly Caesar haircut and his voice actor is black as well. I also think Eitan is Asian, but I could be wrong. I think he looks more like Cameron (which I think he should have been deaf and Cloe’s love interest, since she is the tripping queen). I wish there were more boy characters from the dolls/series. Logan Browning as Sasha was on point, since she acts and looks just like her (and doesn’t annoy me as much as Tia Mowry, because I only here Tia, not Sasha, but she did great).

But, now looking back it's really culturally insensitive, thanks for teaching me those hats are called ushankas, many years ago I got one in a charuty shop from the USSR which blew my mind (how did it get to some random countryside charity shop in England)
To answer your question, I would VERY much like to keep the names of things and the appropriate names in media, it's important to have that correct so that we dont make mistakes again in the future. Because realistically it was genie magic that took me to learning about Indian and Nepalese *fashions*, and luckily I lived in an area with a lot of nepalese people, I had a lot of Nepalese friends (and have visited Nepal since too) so I got to learn about their culture and their fabrics from the people who owned the fabric and clothing shops and were also passionate about it as part of their own culture. Lucky for me, yes, I learnt a lot from the right sources, I even have full traditional outfits from dhaka fabric made custom and khussa shoes (which are from many countries, notably in my area were worn by Pakistani people and Indian people) too; directly from people that taught me about them, or from Nepal after learning about their history and cultural importance. However, for those that dont have that access to learn about how culturally important it is (or isnt) then how do they learn where the line is? Thats why it's so important, if youre profiting off of their culture and fashions, the LEAST they could do is learn about it and use that time to pass that forward

It was outrageous!!! And parents got mad at their own kids too. I’ll never forget my mum blowing up at me when I saw Bratz dolls for the first time and told her I liked them. I was a tomboy so I wasn’t really interested in dolls as much but the other reason was that they almost all looked the same at that time (blonde hair blue eyes girly outfits etc.) which just wasn’t realistic to me. I liked Bratz because to me they were realistic because they looked different to each other. I also liked that their outfits weren’t just “girly”. And even though I’m white I looked at Yasmin and I related to her instantly because she was the closest I’d seen to a doll having red hair!! But my mum had a go at me, in the middle of the shop, about how I was a terrible and disgusting person for liking “slutty dolls”. I grew up in evangelical christianity, not in the US though, and the sexualisation of girls and minorities was so out of hand and I feel like Bratz dolls were the perfect target for that mentality. I always wished I could have Bratz dolls!!
