    I remembered this episode. I forgot about groaning because of the name of the demon.
    Moloch is a traditional Hewbrew name for demons, but it was later confirmed to be a nod to C programmers as well.
    In C there is a built in function called malloc, which is short for Memory Allocate.
    You call the function to get a chunk of memory / RAM to use.

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 Год назад +1

      Interesting thing in C programming, you have to very carefully keep track of the memory you allocate, because you have to manually de-allocate all memory that you allocate. If you don't you get a memory leak that can and will crash your program, and in those days, you computer. In the case of the show, binding Moloch is like de-allocating the memory assigned to him.

    The internet in the spring of 1997 was an odd bird of a thing. AOL was the gateway into browsing for most kids, and they had their own chat and message board channels that didn’t require you to go to actual websites… so it was all relatively safe (with instant messaging being the equivalent of DMs nowadays). There was a lot you could do without actually surfing the web. But it was slow. It was tedious. Talking to others was sometimes the best thing you could do because it didn’t use up a lot of memory and there weren’t a lot of fancy icons that needed to load all the time. Actual websites were so primitive, they were hardly the reason for being online. It was, from the beginning, a social tool.
    I love that Willow gets a spotlight in this episode, and there’s some intrigue to the plot. But it’s still one of the lesser season 1 entries.

    • @Tantalus010
      @Tantalus010 Год назад +5

      You didn't mention the most important part: we weren't always online. Dial-up modems were the way most of us connected (through a service like AOL or Netscape), and being on the internet meant tying up the house's phone line (so nobody else could make or receive calls while you were on the internet). Sometimes, an incoming phone call would boot you off the internet (if you had call waiting). Also, there was often only one computer in the house for everyone to use. We still called them PCs, but they really weren't personal yet. All of these problems led to some families buying a second phone line (specifically for the internet). If you were Buffy's age, going to college in the early 2000s was doubly liberating because colleges were your first taste of high speed, always online internet access.

    Even today, I think people are a bit too blasé about not knowing who they are directly talking to on the internet. Doing so and doing so assuming the person on the other end are who they say they are, are two different things. Xander is correct about the elderly Dutch woman comparison moment, but it doesn't mean panic. It should mean be cautious.
    The best line in this episode is Giles explaining to Jenny that, "I simply don't adhere to a, a knee-jerk assumption that because something is new, it's better." Like Xander's elderly Dutch woman moment it still means something today.

    Great reaction as usual, glad you enjoyed this episode more than many people do. Yes the "robot" looked terrible, but the budget for the first season was insanely low. Plus, it's worth noting that this isn't really a working robot, it's a metal body being animated by a demon.
    @4:20 It's called a Wand Scanner and yes, they do exist, but they're usually not worth the effort. Most scanners are similar to photocopy machines: a bright horizontal light illuminates the text while an internal digital camera takes pictures and stitches them together to form a page.
    It may look like text, but the original scan is just a picture. You need to run a second program (Optical Character Recognition or OCR) to convert it to a text document. Over the past 30 years the technology has gotten faster and conversion more accurate, but the underlying method hasn't changed a lot.

      I went to university in 1997. We had four shared computers in my hall of residence (about five hundred students) that were connected to the internet. They were very basic. One of them was missing the on button from the front and we had a specially bent fork that you had to insert to reach the power to get it started. How we didn’t burn down I have no idea. Four computers was enough because we only had email (address issued by uni but no one sent anything to it), and most people only got a few a term. We were still hand writing essays. Communication was by letters!
      By the time I went back in 2003 to do graduate school we all needed our own computer, everything was word processed and ideally you needed your own internet connection. Times changed very fast and this was the exact point it was happening.

    In '97 the web wasn't quite mainstream yet but chat rooms (basic websites where you talked in text) were already around and Instant Messaging was just becoming a thing. With great trepidation we would utter the ancient incantation "A/S/L ?"* and hope we hadn't summoned a demon :).
    * in case that's aged out, "A/S/L ?" meant "Age/Sex/Location ?" as in what age are you (to avoid being age inappropriate), what sex are you and where in the world are you. So as the episode reflects, people were already worried about whether the person they were speaking to wasn't who they seemed to be (we just didn't have the term "catfish" yet, that's from a 2010 documentary).

    I've come to the conclusion that this episode was ahead of its time, both for the effects and the implications of the nature of the story.
    Having grown up during that time, I feel like one of the least realistic things is the scanning wand Willow used at the start of the episode, scanning a clear and perfect image so effortlessly. Like, it can be a pain in the butt _now_ to get a proper image with a hand scanner. And apparently an entire demon essence must have been under 30Kb. That thing's left horn wouldn't have fit in the internet back then. It'd be funny though if the origin of the noise computers made back in the day when connecting to the internet was Moloch screaming because he was stuck in the landline of a school library's slow internet connection.
    _But_ imagine the implications of Moloch infecting the internet _today._ We'd be screwed. And I have to imagine it would be way harder, if not impossible, to get him out of the internet.

    I definitely think the implication is that the demon had some influence over its victims that affected their behavior on top of just standard manipulation. The demon also definitely worked better as a disembodied predator. I almost wonder if the robot body was a network concession considering The WB had multiple concerns with the show potentially being too scary and what not for its target audience and time slot. That said, this show never fails to be ambitious with what it tries to do. Even when a monster design or plot concept doesn't completely work, I always appreciated that level of creativity and willingness to not just play it safe.

    Also, total side note but the "Circle of Kayless" will never not be funny to me. So "Kahless the Unforgettable" is a character from Star Trek. He is the legendary Klingon warrior that slew the Klingon gods & freed the people. Kahless is pronounced exactly the same as Kayless & I simply cannot see that scene without thinking how weird it is that a 15th century Italian monk is invoking the name of a mythic Klingon hero. Anyway, hope you enjoyed this little trip into my brain :D

    A lot of the fan base doesn’t seem to care much for this episode, perhaps because the technology is so dated or because they are actually elderly Dutch women, but I’ve always loved it.
    Weird facts: when Moloch is checking Buffy’s records, if you look closely at the info on Buffy’s files, they give her a different birthday each time 10-24-1980 and 5-6-1979. Don’t know if either are cannon.

    This episode always ranks very low on the favourite fan episodes which is rather unfair. It was really way ahead of its time regarding the potential dangers of online dating and social media. Willow is obviously very green, innocent and vulnerable as up to this point she has no romantic experiences. Great foreshadowing here again in this episode ( will not mention here ) as could be construed as spoilers. As has been said S1 is quite rough, but great perception here of how the future is now with the internet basically controlling everyone's lives.

    People are still being sucked in by scams, relationships/financial or otherwise. For me, that's what I hated about this otherwise OK episode. We can see Willow so deep that she doesn't think about the implications that Xander pointed out (as I would have). It happens easily with the Nigerian Prince and all that money that someone left you that you will get for a fee. Obviously, plays on people's desperation.

    Absolutely the nadir of the show for me. Dated (even when it aired), unsophisticated and obvious plot and - even for this show - a silly premise. It’s not the plot or the acting that’s the problem. The climactic battle was silly. Allyson’s line reading of “maybe we can still be friends” is supposed to be a joke. It falls pancake flat.
