Fun bit of trivia: The guy playing a fake Santa in the opening bar scene, has actually played Santa in at least 30 Hallmark movies for decades now. So when he gives David Harbour some Santa advice, it's coming from a guy who's been Santa for a long time.
Knowing nothing beforehand, I went in expecting this to be one of those "evil Santa rampage movies." Didn't expect it to be a surprisingly wholesome (although still violent) movie 😅
I think that's the secret sauce for this movie: that it actually IS a Christmas movie at heart. As much as it's having fun with everything, as much as it takes knocks at so many Christmas things or looks at them through a twisted lens, it still somehow holds Christmas sacred. I wouldn't have called that going in, but it does.
This was the rare flick I was sold on purely by the trailer, with absolutely no foreknowledge. Saw it one RUclips, something about the first few seconds made me not skip it, and by the halfway point it was already on my must-see list. "It's Die Hard... with Santa... and I am *SO* here for it."
When I saw this in the theater it was definitely well received and the audience had a great time and cheered at all the best parts. I thought they did a great job even with all the flaws in continuity and some of the plot points. I really loved the flashback scene of who Santa was before he was chosen.
This is now one of my favorite Christmas movies. It's got so much heart to it, for as violent as it is. Plus, the action is unique and creative, and features one of the most creative kills I've seen in cinema history. And, it's freaking FUN. When the trailer came out, I showed my wife, and she and I could not stop laughing throughout. What a great movie.
@@YokaiJigoku except it's not a Christmas movie. You can put that plot in July and nothing would change but the holiday that happens to be a part of the movie
What cracks me up about this flick is the Christmas classic 'Scrooged' had them advertising a film borderline identical to this one as a joke about how dark and messed up the media was.
The mom and dad getting back together makes perfect sense with the logic of the world the movie has presented us. It was Trudy's wish, the only present she wanted. And it worked. Christmas magic. Love this movie.
I loved the twist on the "heartwarming" moment when Trudy sees the sledgehammer and says "Skullcrusher!" with that child-like awe and wonder. And, of course, the chimney kill is incredibly creative and horrifying.
Perfect timing! I genuinely just watched this last night & now several of my favorite reactors are checking it out. I loved it WAY more than I expected. I didn’t expect to get so emotional watching this either. Finding out the producers of John Wick worked on this & Hopper played Santa got me to check it out immediately. He killed it (literally)!
I'm just really happy that this movie's getting some attention now. Saw this in the theatre last year and barely anyone was talking about it. It's crude and shameless about its lineage and references, but rightly so.
Yes!! Was so excited when opened my subscription feed and saw that you had reacted to this. This became a new instant classic for me when I saw it last year so it's great to see it getting so much attention by reactors this year.
28:48 "I don't think Jason and Linda would have gotten together at the end of the movie." It's Christmas magic. I still don't understand how it works...
I'm so happy I saw this in theaters, it's just a fun, violent holiday film! Also, David Harbour killed it as Santa (pun intended) (also happy holidays Nat)
My favorite Christmas movie since Elf! Also *Fun History Lesson* this Santa’s Viking backstory is ACTUALLY tied to the real origins of Christmas. Long before Christianity or Catholicism came into existence there was the pagan holiday of Yule (yes as in whenever you have heard of Yuletide) and when Christianity was starting to spread throughout Scandinavia they actually stole some of their rituals and holidays and made it their own. So Santa being a Viking actually makes perfect sense.🤣🤣🤣 Also THIS version of Santa needs to be a guest character in a Mortal Kombat game. The way he kills the main villain alone looks like a Fatality!
@@Pink.andahalf Not...exactly. St Nicholas/Nicolai/Nicholaus was a Turkish saint - more specifically from Lycia, a small country in what is Turkey today. He was mainly venerated in Constantinople and Cappadocia and then gained popularity because he was very much into giving stuff to kids and poor people. He was also the kind of saint that punched people.
Its great that the only real magical skill Santa displays is the chimney teleport, the rest is just bridal combat. The reindeer are only in a fraction of the movie.
26:50 the burning of the money was important, the father gave up his greed for the sake of santa.... the fire did nothing, but the act of burning it helped.... chrismas magic..... still don´t know how it works....
sadly them getting together again at the end is actually realistic, it's called the suspension bridge effect. It's temporary heightened levels of lust which people mistake for love, happens in basically every action movie. That's why if they have sequels you hear that the relationship either ended really quickly or resulted in a bad marriage which ended much later, like die hard.
Just watched this myself as i missed it last year hehe fun movie i really wanted a part 2 set in the past i'd love to see him as the Viking learning the Christmas spirit with a big sodding hammer :)
Definitely a new Christmas classic, hope you saw the little credit scene they tossed in, it's pretty funny. Funny enough this is one of the few films I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel or prequel too, certainly raises a lot of questions, especially how he became Santa to begin with.
2:17 "For a _Jewish_ person, I _really_ love Christmas." Yeah. I'm not religious at _all,_ and _I_ love Christmas. As far back as there have been written _records,_ this time of year has been know for celebration.
David Harbor was definitely great in this, but also shout out to the little girl, she was really good as well. Kid’s definitely got a future in acting if she wants it.
Concerning the icicles pointing up, yeah they probably are decorations. However ice can form pointing up. If I remember correctly this can be caused by when the water freezes it follows a path of least resistance for a lack of a better term and if the surrounding sides and the bottom as well freeze first the icicle can move up. I have no idea why but I have had this happen in my freezer.
I somehow missed this one when it came out last year, and when I saw you posted this I had to go and watch it before I could watch your reaction. So thanks for the reminder.
Natalie!!!!!! Have you seen The Hebrew Hammer? It's the Blazing Saddles of holiday movies, and hearing your shocked laughter while you watch it would be a delight 😊also I think you'll love it.
I got to walk in the studio where a lot of the interior shots were filmed. I didn’t step into the ‘houses’ though. I was looking for something for a movie I was working on at the time. I was just there to borrow something
Fun bit of trivia: The guy playing a fake Santa in the opening bar scene, has actually played Santa in at least 30 Hallmark movies for decades now. So when he gives David Harbour some Santa advice, it's coming from a guy who's been Santa for a long time.
That is awesome. I didn't know that info until now. Cool.
Yup!!! Spot on. The city this was filmed in films at least 3-5 Hallmark Christmas movies a year
That’s amazing ^^
I always love touches like this. You'd think I'd already know this surely after so many years I must of seen a Hallmark Christmas movie by now.
I love this movie, David Harbour was a perfect casting choice for Violent Night.
Damn straight, he was perfect, I'm glad someone had the guts to greenlight this movie
Yes, he really nails that combination of weariness, warmth and asskicking the movie is going for
He really was!
Knowing nothing beforehand, I went in expecting this to be one of those "evil Santa rampage movies." Didn't expect it to be a surprisingly wholesome (although still violent) movie 😅
Yeah the amount of lore included too was also very awesome

Yeah. I was afraid it was going to be another Santa-as-slasher flick, and I was pleasantly surprised. I like this movie more, every time I see it.
The concept of "this is what would have really happened to the bad guys in home alone if they really walked into these traps" was awesome!
The family matriarch is played by Beverly D'Angelo who also played Ellen Griswold (the mom) from the Vacation movies (including Christmas Vacation).
One of my favorite holiday movies of the past few years! David Harbour's Santa will offically be how I envision Santa Claus from now on.
David Harbour and Kurt Russell are both really good Santas for the modern age. 👍
your facial reaction when he says, "ho-ho-holy &$#×" was like a kid who opened a present and got exactly what they wanted
Naysayer: Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie.
Violent Night producers: But what if John McClaine was Santa Claus?
Now this is a Christmas movie I wanna watch every Christmas
When I saw this in the theater it was definitely well received and the audience had a great time and cheered at all the best parts. I thought they did a great job even with all the flaws in continuity and some of the plot points. I really loved the flashback scene of who Santa was before he was chosen.
This is just one of those movies where you just accept the premise & pull out the popcorn and enjoy the ride.

Better than Die Hard, not quite as good as Gremlins.
Santa Clause is the new John McClane & John Wick.
John Wick who doesn’t know what guns are? 😂
@@kratosGOWSaint John Nick? ;-p
Worst comparison ever! John Wick knows guns and John McClain has nothing to do with this genre 😅

He's the new John McClane. But Bob Odenkirk is the new John Wick.
In the novel series "The Dresden Files" it also comes as a bit of a surprise of what Santa's day job actually is. Great read!
Odin :-)
Those books are awesome, I highly recommend them!
What cracks me up about this flick is the Christmas classic 'Scrooged' had them advertising a film borderline identical to this one as a joke about how dark and messed up the media was.
This movie was so much fun when it came out last year. I think it will be one of those movies I watch almost every Christmas.
The mom and dad getting back together makes perfect sense with the logic of the world the movie has presented us. It was Trudy's wish, the only present she wanted. And it worked. Christmas magic. Love this movie.
There was nothing like hearing Trudy say "Skull Crusher!!" hysterical and priceless. We will watch this movie every Christmas.
I love the choice to make Santa Viking, because Odin did inspire the first incarnation of Santa, and many Christmas traditions have pagan beginnings.🤗
I loved the twist on the "heartwarming" moment when Trudy sees the sledgehammer and says "Skullcrusher!" with that child-like awe and wonder.
And, of course, the chimney kill is incredibly creative and horrifying.

This movie never takes itself seriously and I love it. Cheesy one liners, great action, and a fun story. All you need out of a movie sometimes
I'm just really happy that this movie's getting some attention now. Saw this in the theatre last year and barely anyone was talking about it. It's crude and shameless about its lineage and references, but rightly so.
Oh, this movie is AMAZING. And the R-rated Home Alone sequences is pure gold!
I feel like this was Christmas fun for your editor, too. 😂
Aw I’m so glad you’re reacting to this movie! I love that reactors are checking this movie out this year ❤️🎅🏼

24:16 "Jason is useless"
Literally a couple of seconds before Jason picked up baby Jesus and used it as a weapon.
I love how they have the actor who plays Translucent in The Boys as Trudy's dad
I love santa being so old he doesnt even really know what a gun is or how it works hes just kinda aware they shoot bullets
I saw this in the theaters and laughed out loud the entire time I’m SO READY 😂
And every Christmas eve after that Santa would keep Skullcrusher in the back of his sled just in case.
he didn't yeet him up the chimney, he yoinked him up the chimney.
Omg I am so happy to see you are doing Violent Night. One of my new favs
This movie is fantastic.
HaShTaG bLeSsEd!! lol my favorite line
This is on my favorite christmas movie list now, right up there with Anna and the Apocalypse.
YES I WAS HOPING YOU'D WATCH THIS! Sorry for all caps, I'm so excited!!!
Cameron, the editing on this was *hilarious*, the quips were amazing!
Its confirmed a sequel is in development
The scene where the bad guy shoots the fire extinguisher is also a reference to Die Hard 4
28:11 You missed the post credits scene. That last bit really makes the ending that much funnier.
I'm gonna need a Santa Claus mortal kombat dlc where his fatality is the chimney
28:48 "I don't think Jason and Linda would have gotten together at the end of the movie."
It's Christmas magic. I still don't understand how it works...
You should actually wach Rare Exports.
That is a quite of a fun christmas movie. 😄

I genuinely enjoy your reaction videos, Natalie. Thanks for making them! Happy holidays to you, your hubby and your little fur kids. 😊
Classic Home Alone style trap. Both the Nail and the ladder one of the steps sawed so when you step on it you fall right through. Genius
happy holidays found your channel this year and has been a highlight also you hair looks amazing
Sherlock season 4 😭😭😭 I can’t wait for you to post it.

It's not quite that complex. The actual Saint Nicholaus was Swedish.

In case you weren't aware, most of the great Christmas classic songs were written by Jewish composers.
David Harbour makes a particularly good cranky, butt-kicking Santa
Plz. Blue Eye Samurai. It's up there with Arcane and ATLA. Ratings/reviews are super high.

I’m hoping they have a sequel by next year Christmas
I agree. Maybe supply a little more backstory into Santa's origin and the magic behind his powers as well.
Seasons Beatings everyone
Die Hard 2, the soliders turning out to be working with the villain.
I love the old 80's and 90's cheesy movies and this reminds so much of those. So I called this modern cheese.
Happy holidays to you too Nathalie. 😊❤
*I laugh so hard every time I watch this movie. And thankfully they also use one of my most favourite Christmas songs : "Christmas Time".* 🎵✨🎄✨🎵🔥😈🔥
Bruhhh the John torso-guizamo instead of leguizamo is the most underrated edit of this video 😂😂😂
I love this movie
I hope this series continues they could do a spin off movie about Mrs. Claus being a Norse deity.
Sadly she'd probably get called a Mary sue
I think it looks interesting and I'll have to watch the whole movie.
