What I do enjoy about this movie is that the writers made Grace logically sane. Ever since she knew the truth about the family, she did everything in her power to survive. Ripping up the dress for more mobility, taking weapons from the game hall that she had noticed prior, knocking out the servant, taking his car and IMMIDIATLEY calling the police are just some of smart decisions she made throughout. I feel like horror movies make protagonists overstimulated by fear or just out-right dumb them down for the sake of the plot, and I liked that they chose not to do that.
And I like that because its still a 'horror' movie, all of those things she did, didn't actually matter. She had to play the story out to its end, no attempt at cutting it short worked.
This is what I thought too. I wondered if they found a girl that could do that on purpose or if her violent screeching just ended up coincidentally becoming that.
Yeah she is one of the only ones that gives me full body chills nowadays. This is gunna sound so fcked but whenI watched the last scream for the first time and saw her in the beginning I was like huh..and then i thought ohhh wait….yeah she can die🤣 I just wanted her scream okay haha
The behind the scenes content said that her wedding dress like it’s own character that you get to see deteriorate more and more along with her and the plot. I think they said they made like 20+ different dresses for this movie, and I love that you picked up on that in the commentary. You’ve got that critical eye!
Have you seen Mayhem (2017)? Less horror and more action/black comedy, but I like it even better. The Babysitter (2017) is good too. She had quite a run of such films.
@@DavetheGrue Mayhem is SO MUCH FUN!! I put it on not expecting much but thinking I'd at least somewhat enjoy it with her and Steven Yeun but it was awesome fun.
Emilie's character was so funny to me because the actress, Melanie Scrofano, is best known for portraying Wynonna Earp, a quick-witted, gun wielding-demon hunter, but this whole movie is her not knowing how to use weapons and still managing to accidentally kill folks, even dropping a gun at one point.
a fellow earperrrrrrr!! this movie is one of my comfort movies because of how absolutely hilarious mel is and i love watching people witness the insanity that is emilie
Even though the movie isn't deep, because isn't trying to be, I think the story and dialogue deserve a lot of praise. It's difficult to pull off such a weird concept and still keep things tightly paced. Not to mention that the reasons why the MC has to remain in the mansion felt organic or every time she was captured, there were well written reasons why she wasn't being immediately killed. Another element I did like is that everybody in the movie was pretty much a normal person in an insane situation, which is why I think there aren't more showdowns between the family and the MC. None of them are killing machines, the family is literally a bunch of beneficiaries of the system that give them money and power. "It's just the way things are".
Yeah, it's not even technically their idea to do this thing, they inherited it along with the wealth, and are all kind of incompetent in some or even most ways. Which, looking at real-life billionaires...feels a bit too real now that I think of it. 😆
@@avisser5345 I feel like it could work well as an anthology, aka the next movie is barely connected (if connected at all) to the first, with different characters and a whole different cast.
I didn't realize that she toasted to Me La Bail so maybe that's also why she wins in the end (as well as being a bad ass). Makes sense for him to give her a nod at the end.
Not only that, but she kills the current matriarch with the magical box. It’s like she’s telling Mr La Bail that she’s still in the game. It’s like she’s making a deal with him to burn it all down. And he accepts.
@@tysoncram2104 yes, that's what I've seen others say. If the aunt hadn't broken the rules by trying to k..i..l..l the legit winner of the game, they would have been fine.
Such a fun time! They strategically only kill off the help throughout the movie, and other than the mom, you don’t realize they’re saving all the main characters until the end so they can explode them in the most graphic way possible at the end
them exploding was a last minute thing, they were originally going to have them all survive and realikze that the faustian deal wasn't real. but than at the last minute thought it would be stupid
Samara Weaving is amazing! She has a great future ahead of her, especially in horror. She was excellent in two episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead and the Babysitter movies. The actor who plays Fitch is Kristian Bruun, who played Donny on Orphan Black. He is comedy gold, and deserves more work. The dark humor of this movie is fantastic. I loved your react!
Samara Weaving is a stone-cold fox and a bad-ass. She literally kills this role. And yep NO ONE saw that twist end. Perfect. PS: Weaving is the niece of none-other-than Agent Smith himself, Hugo Weaving. Fun reaction Nat :D xoxo
I remember finding this movie last minute and decided to watch it because it was my birthday. It was such a fun surprise. I loved to hate the family. The actors are a fun time. Daniel’s betrayal was never a surprise to me. The moment he lost the only two people he cared about. Then he quickly realized he lost Grace, it’s not surprising that he betrayed her.
I absolutely love Melanie Scrofano as Emilie!! I very highly recommend the show Wynonna Earp even if you watch it just in your personal time instead for a video, Melanie is hilarious and badass in it as Wynonna!
For more good stuff from her, I'd absolutely recommend the Canadian sitcom Letterkenny. She's only a side character, but the show is hilarious and she's fantastic in it.
I think an uncommented on part of the curse the family is under is that if the person they are marrying will turn out to be someone they hate, then they get a silly game but if it is someone that they really love, then the card pulled is hide-and-seek. Le Bael granted them wealth but only with lives of emotional misery.
Emilie and Fitch didn't seem like they hated each other at all. Personally, I think it's more about the character of the person. The type of person who would sign over their soul and participate in a sacrifice versus the sort of person who wouldn't go along with it. Fitch and Charity were all in, but Grace doesn't seem like she would be down for it.
This is probably one of the most fun movies I've seen in a while. It's not at all complex or especially tense, but it's so much damn fun I love it. I can only imagine how much fun the cast would have had making it, especially Samara Weaving, Andie MacDowell, Kristian Bruun, and Melanie Scrofano.
There’s some behind-the-scenes stuff with the costume designer talking about the dress and how it evolves over the course of the film that’s really neat stuff.
I already loved Kristian Bruun and Melanie Scrofano for their roles in Orphan Black and Wynonna Earp respectively, and omg what is a joy to see them paired up in this movie!
While the entire film is just pure fun, my favorite moment will always be that half second flare of the fireplace revealing Mr. le Bail as a real entity and his respectful acknowledgement of Grace's victory. And also his acceptance of her decision to end the family bloodline. Because Alex only died after she declared for a divorce and removed her ring. That decision ended the pact as there was no more blood family left to be bound by it. So not only is Grace the last legal member of the family and thus the only remaining heir to it all, she is entirely free to do as she chooses. Including finding a new husband and living out a normal-ish life.
Melanie Scrofano who was Emilie is the dark horse in this movie, she is always so good in whatever she's in. Wynonna Earp one of my favorite shows and her small role on Letterkenny was awesome.
One of my favourite horror/horror-comedies to date. Those screams are iconic at this point (#1 for me being when the car is crashing after kicking the butler). Glad you enjoyed it as well!
Fun Fact: The name of Mr. "Le Bail" is a phonetic morpheme/amalgamation of the words "bet", "bait" & "Belial", a name for the underworld's ruler or a synonym for the Christian devil. Meaning the grandfather made a bet w/ the demon for great fortune in exchange for ongoing bait.
@w1975b Sorry, autocorrect failure. I first thought you hadn't heard of the word.^^ But I'll leave the explanation anyway. (It's a noun meaning "joining, mingling".
