    I have noticed both watching videos and watching a mechanic rebuilding a 6-71 and getting tools and parts ready for him that you old school guys never ever hardly wear plastic gloves like all the new " technicians " do.
    I don't care if you only speak Spanish or English but your allowed to talk while working on these old girls as I never knew a old school mechanic who didn't.
    Thanks for the video.
    Cheers!

      I never could work with gloves, I needed to feel with my hands what I was doing. I admit I always had cuts, scrapes and bruises on my hands all the time.

    There's a socket made especially for the fuel lines, I used the special timing pin to set the injector height, makes it easier and faster. I was working at a GMC dealership on straight 50 percent commission. We had an injector room with all the equipment to overhaul the injectors ourself. The flat rate manual paid 1 hour per injector, and you could overhaul one in 20 minutes at the most(mostly lapping small parts). an engine overhaul paid good money because you could usually beat the flat rate manual by 1/2 if you got after it. also Detroits are fun to work on.

      I am 70 years old and a couple of years i had to rebuild the 3-71 world war two engine in my boat. it took a long time because i had to study this engine. youtube helped imensley, and you would be surprised how many mechanics are actually willing to waste time on the phone answering questions. I actually understand how every part on this engine works and am amazed at the engineering that went into this engine. also you don't need allot of wrenches etc to work on the thing. I have been working on all my cars have never hired a mechanic in my life. never did a diesel before. the detroit diesel was the most fun engine to work on. more moving parts per cubic inch than any other diesel out there.

      4321, I agree, in the Navy we always used a timing pin. I was an EN and I worked on 2-71s, 6-71s slant 6-71s, and 6- 110s. When I was logging I drove a Timber Jack skider. I think it had a 3-57. One day coming out the woods with a jag of logs it wouldn't drop to an idle. I took the value cover off and found #2 injector jammed. I went to local dealer and got a new injector, a timing pin, and a fuel filter. I dropped the filter can expecting a very dirty filter. There wasn't one! The boss showed up and asked what I was doing. I pointed out the missing filter. He said, "oh it got dirty so I threw it away."

    That a good design not to have the injector threaded into the head and instead held in place with a hold down. I also like the way the injector lines is inside the valve cover and not outside of the engine. Looks like an amazing piece of machinery there!

    Several things I'll mention in this "non tutorial" .
    If you have these engines , spend the money on the 1/2" deep line socket and the 1/2" and 5/16" tuneup wrenches , a timing tool is cheap , unless you spend the 200 bucks for a dial indicator tool .
    The torque on the bolts is about 25 / injector hold down .. 90 / rocker stands .. 10-12 / jumper lines .. I might add you're only supposed to use those old style lines once but a lot of people reuse them . Another thing about that is you're supposed to pressurize the fuel system to check for leaks in those lines , or you run the risk of filling the crankcase with fuel . The injector tube should be thoroughly clean . Removing an injector that's been leaking on these engines is a bitch , and sometimes results in tube failure , necessitating a head removal .

    • @zimtok
      @zimtok  8 лет назад +2

      +Ignignokt Mooninite
      I will admit that I was very lucky that I didn't need to remove the head to replace the injector tubes.
      What is not shown is this video is that I did a visual inspection of each tube with a bore scope to make sure they were not in too bad of condition. It was also apparent from the condition of the injectors that I removed that there was not any obvious problems.
      I also checked the rocker lash with a feeler gauge and was lucky there also as I didn't have to adjust any of them as they were all within spec.

    U know it’s always a good idea to push the inj away from the rack ball (inj control rack arm) because there is a dowel pin on the bottom of the inj & the hole on the cyl head & there is a little slop there & the reason is u don’t want the inj C arm control rod touching twice up against the inj control arm lever (only one place should be touching that arm & then torque to 25lbs) & u did a good job !

    I have a few questions about my Detroit 8.2.
    It set up for about 10 years so I changed the fuel and fuel filters and it started right up with the help of about a whole can of starting fluid spray. The RPMs were good and I let it idle for about an hour. Then when I started to back it up out of the yard I got stuck a little and started rocking back and forth to get out of the mud, plus I had to hop over a few rocks in the yard so the fuel tank got a pretty good shake up.
    While I was rocking it back and forth to get out of the mud it started running real rough. It would idle real low but when I tried to accelerate it would start to die out so all I could do to keep it running was to barely pat the peddle a little and then finally I let off the throttle altogether and it idled on its own at that point.
    I then pulled the fuel filters off and the first filter was pretty rough. It was milky and had a lot of trash in it, including a wasp and a lady bug. The second filter looked good but it was half way empty. So I primed and changed both filters but the motor still ran the same. So I took both filters back off and the first filter still looked clean and the second one was clean and half empty again.
    The fuel cap had been off for quite a few years I imagine and I couldn't find the cap anywhere.
    What are the chances that the injectors are clogged? Or is there something else I should try first. I did take the return line off to see if it was getting fuel and it did start pumping fuel out after about half a minute after it started. I think it is a whole lot more likely that trash got up in the system than the fuel pump going out all at once.
    Any ideas? It will start and idle but the RPMs won't rev up. I checked the throttle linkage too and it seems to be okay.

    • @tntruther
      @tntruther 6 лет назад

      I was thinking maybe I should modify a filter where I can attach an air line to it so that I can run some compressed air back through the fuel line from the first filter back to the tank.
