That 8V71 has the old 'non dogbone' heads. Those two screw racks took some feel for certain. I always ran the rack starting with both cylinders next to the fuel rod then ran the rest each side, but whatever your method, if you get it right you'll know. They run really smooth when the racks and the governor are set up right. I used to love the challenge of making a pair of marine Detroits sing the same.
I was taught to back off all the injectors and set the two front cylinders first so they bounce with a screw driver when in full fuel .Then disconnect them and set the rest of cylinders off the two front cylinders then reconnect and bounce the rack.
Nice video. After you did the left bank you did the right bank of course, however how do you make sure that both sides are balanced with each other? Do you adjust the right bank with the left bank clevis disconnected?
First off, get rid of those old style racks, and install a set of break away racks. Next do what vondet1 said, and set your front injectors so that there is equal drag on the pins. Then set the rest of the injectors to the front injectors. Clear the racks after each adjustmment.
7:49 Looks like one of the exhaust rocker arms has been replaced, it is noticeably wider than the others. (No I'm not talking about the middle injector rockers!)
I appreciate you posting this video. I really need more instructional videos like this. I have a 6v92 on my bus. Can you make a valve adjustment how to video?
Don't do it until you really know how. It's best to have someone who knows how, to show you how to do the rack adjustment first before you attempt to do it yourself.
Especially if its 6v92T/TA/TTA cos if you don't do governor boost adj right you will have yourself a problem, but as he said don't do what he does as bounce back check is correct way, he has far too much preload on injectors and in a real world where used every day there will be aggressive wear, maybe not so big a deal for a resto museum piece
When I was learning to work on these at a tech center the teacher did not back out the buffer and the engine ran away and broke the crank in two places.
Jule Godfirnon U know what I do is, when I adjust the rack I always adjust the fuel rod that’s the longest first which n the case is the rt side of the engine lookin from the rear & then after that adjustment I do the left side adjustment making sure that both sides feel the same on the pins & then go from there & that’s the way I’ve been doin it for the last 50 yrs, there great little engines but a lot of folks didn’t apply the proper glues & proper washers & what nots to these engines & that’s y they leak oil so much & the 53,71 & 92 series died, because the EPA didn’t like it & that’s the truth ! “Enjoy these engines cuz I know I still do & good luck sir.”
Craig Ewing No, he did a good job describing & explaining the procedures of an adjustment but forgot backing the buffer screw out cuz that will make the idle ride on the spring of the buffer & ur idle response is slower, I don’t like it like that !
Could u please tell me what oil i should use in a 8v71 turbo in my 1990 102a3 , have searched all over the net as far as i can tell it is streight 40w oil does it need to be for 2 stroke or as long as its streight 40w its fine ? Thanks for the help
Michael Langley, Yup but it's a little different than a oil-fed runaway. You can simply cut off the fuel supply, while if an oil-fed runaway ... your only options are to block the air intake, stall the engine, or haul your a$$ outta there! XD
The injector in a two stroke Detroit is a 'unit type'. It handles the timing, pressurization, and atomization of the fuel. The rack controls the metering.
CONGRATULATION.....!!!! You did it. But I don't think you did it right, i can do it within three (3) minutes, so, more practice... maybe a year or two, you might reach the tail of my career. Any way, what happens to that engine, because as far as my observation, that monster will be going wild...
Good video, although you didn't show how to set the left hand rack and the right hand rack together,, so the teaching was incomplete, and therefore someone who has never done it won't know how it's done. Also you forgot to mention to back out the buffer screw first. But the part that you did teach was good.
Why don't continuous Detroit with small engines for GMC and Chevy .. and they put the trouble Duramax .. a pain in the ass engine .. WHY !???? . a experimental engine and not quality like DETROIT ... ....................... CHEERS

Ex navy Detroit diesel Engineman. (1970-78) We used to “run the rack” by “bouncing” the injector rods. But same sequence and process. Good video.

Thank you! I have 5 stuck injector's and I was a bit weary about doing this. This helps a lot.
Muchas gracias por compartir este vídeo estoy aprendiendo más sobre los motores Detroit, saludos desde Saltillo Coahuila México
That mate. That was a huge help!
You can see how good of a job you did by seeing how low your idle will go..
e banks tied together in order to sync all the injectors. But not until one side is completely done.
This is a great video!!!! Thanks for the info.
Necesito este video pero en español si alguien me lo ouede pasar gracias
thanks for sharing... this is why i like YT.
Bra information 👍👍

+Frank Hollein I am replacing injectors on a 2-71 genset. Are there break away racks for the 2-71?
Frank I know the video is at least fours years ago, I have some questions and is prepared to compensate for consultation fee. Thanks

Looks almost like it's had an injector rocker installed in a valve position????
Good question

is a 92 series the same way done like the 71
How do they hold their position the screws when it's raining couldn't those screws turn
So cool
Will this method work on a 53?
Thanks.
Saludos tengo un motor v692 biturbo marino utiliza el inyector 7045P

Process would be the same for a 6v92, right?
u forgot to back out ur buffer 5/8” it’s n the book, very important to do that !
Indeed. You don't want your idle riding on the buffer screw.

Strange that people call the throttle control rod the rack.
Absolutely you want th
Can you just disconnect the fuel rod without having to touch the governer idle then set injectors ?

is a rack like an injection pump?
+Michael Jagger No, the Rack meters out the fuel to each injector.
+Sooty Mangabey if the rack gets stuck the engine can runaway
