I'm gen X DOING THIS AT 10 YEARS OLD
Sorry buddy you can't use the crab holddown to seat injectors , warming will Robinson
Going to Church!!!!
U should always use paper towels instead of linen rags cause lint can get into bearings and injectors and other crap.awesome video. Love these old 2 strokes. Coolest diesel engines ever and the coolest sounding.
Alguien que me pueda orientar tengo un 453 no prende nomás estarea cómo si el ahogador estuviera jalado como funciona ese sistema saludos desde tamaulipas

U missed 3 adjustments and you don't have the proper tools
There a socket you can get or make you your own. Ether way it makes the line removal eazy and you do it the correct way
How does the injector get sealed in the injector sleeve?
The injector has a tapered end that is fit to the sleeve internal taper. The torqued hold down holds it in place and seals it.
@@zimtok thanks 😊 I've just removed the injectors from my 8v71n marine that was wet stacking I found copper washers stuck in the tubes 😪😪 I removed them just hope they seal when put back
Sorry to bother you again experts like yourself are hard to find these days Can I ask you this , is it normal when the engine is stopped the rack returns to what looks like full open position?
@@johnbaggus9966 I’m far from an expert but thanks. The rack does return to full throttle after sitting. I assume it is because the governor is not spinning and the air pressure is depleted that shuts down the engine. It takes air pressure to move the rack to shut off the fuel.
@@johnbaggus9966 You saw how I did mine and they sealed just fine. There is a special tool that reams/cleans the seat but I didn’t have it and took the chance. It been good for 10 years.
💜🕊️ 🎶 Sooo goood.
G M good engine I like him.
I like that you used the calipers instead of the $ 600.00 dollar dial indicator.
Thank you very helpful
Thanks for the great vid, sure i read the manual but seeing something is a great help before doing the same job.
Porque se acelerar que tiende a desbacar el motor
There is a socket wrench that wraps around the injector fuel lines making it much easier to remove and replace.
My favorite song you sing.. Buddy could make that guitar weap.. ❤

I have noticed both watching videos and watching a mechanic rebuilding a 6-71 and getting tools and parts ready for him that you old school guys never ever hardly wear plastic gloves like all the new " technicians " do. I don't care if you only speak Spanish or English but your allowed to talk while working on these old girls as I never knew a old school mechanic who didn't. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
I never could work with gloves, I needed to feel with my hands what I was doing. I admit I always had cuts, scrapes and bruises on my hands all the time.
Thank you
There's a socket made especially for the fuel lines, I used the special timing pin to set the injector height, makes it easier and faster. I was working at a GMC dealership on straight 50 percent commission. We had an injector room with all the equipment to overhaul the injectors ourself. The flat rate manual paid 1 hour per injector, and you could overhaul one in 20 minutes at the most(mostly lapping small parts). an engine overhaul paid good money because you could usually beat the flat rate manual by 1/2 if you got after it. also Detroits are fun to work on.
I am 70 years old and a couple of years i had to rebuild the 3-71 world war two engine in my boat. it took a long time because i had to study this engine. youtube helped imensley, and you would be surprised how many mechanics are actually willing to waste time on the phone answering questions. I actually understand how every part on this engine works and am amazed at the engineering that went into this engine. also you don't need allot of wrenches etc to work on the thing. I have been working on all my cars have never hired a mechanic in my life. never did a diesel before. the detroit diesel was the most fun engine to work on. more moving parts per cubic inch than any other diesel out there.
4321, I agree, in the Navy we always used a timing pin. I was an EN and I worked on 2-71s, 6-71s slant 6-71s, and 6- 110s. When I was logging I drove a Timber Jack skider. I think it had a 3-57. One day coming out the woods with a jag of logs it wouldn't drop to an idle. I took the value cover off and found #2 injector jammed. I went to local dealer and got a new injector, a timing pin, and a fuel filter. I dropped the filter can expecting a very dirty filter. There wasn't one! The boss showed up and asked what I was doing. I pointed out the missing filter. He said, "oh it got dirty so I threw it away."
@@Canopus68,guys like your boss kept us Detroit Diesel mechanics employed. I've run across many things like that, that people have done.
@@4321grp It's difficult to understand that when you buy a very expensive machine--it's not unusual to spend over $500,000. for a tractor, skidder or other heavy equipment that you don't take care of it.
@@Canopus68 , I agree, but that's common.
U know it’s always a good idea to push the inj away from the rack ball (inj control rack arm) because there is a dowel pin on the bottom of the inj & the hole on the cyl head & there is a little slop there & the reason is u don’t want the inj C arm control rod touching twice up against the inj control arm lever (only one place should be touching that arm & then torque to 25lbs) & u did a good job !

A twelve point crows foot would do wonders for the fuel lines. Great video!
Good job keep it up. RIP KILZER
This man will learn the hard way that fuel crossover tubes are only to be used once then replaced..
It depends on how many times the tube has been reused, and the condition of the flare on the end of the tube, I agree that any mechanic who's not experienced on Detroits would be better off to go ahead and replace the tubes.
Pretty easy to run it and check for leaks.
Old skool, no gloves, no razor blades, no commentary.
I'm an old school mechanic, and I praise the mechanic who made it practicle for mechanic to wear surgical gloves!
Wire Nuts ! What a great idea!
Sitll a great video at 11! No clutch brake, and, I assume,. if zimtok is still aorund no Jake, either?
Thank you!!!!!
OH !! OH !! .. I think that 36 mechanics don't like this tutorial .... (but for mi was great video jeeeejejejeejeejee )........... CHEERS
Very Good!
You yanked the injector out so fast no body got to see it. Also, as long as you have the mic on, describe what you're doing. Many people watching are not experienced at this.
Muy buen video, gracias por compartirlo para que sepamos como hacerlo saludos desde Saltillo Coahuila México 👍
I have a few questions about my Detroit 8.2. It set up for about 10 years so I changed the fuel and fuel filters and it started right up with the help of about a whole can of starting fluid spray. The RPMs were good and I let it idle for about an hour. Then when I started to back it up out of the yard I got stuck a little and started rocking back and forth to get out of the mud, plus I had to hop over a few rocks in the yard so the fuel tank got a pretty good shake up. While I was rocking it back and forth to get out of the mud it started running real rough. It would idle real low but when I tried to accelerate it would start to die out so all I could do to keep it running was to barely pat the peddle a little and then finally I let off the throttle altogether and it idled on its own at that point. I then pulled the fuel filters off and the first filter was pretty rough. It was milky and had a lot of trash in it, including a wasp and a lady bug. The second filter looked good but it was half way empty. So I primed and changed both filters but the motor still ran the same. So I took both filters back off and the first filter still looked clean and the second one was clean and half empty again. The fuel cap had been off for quite a few years I imagine and I couldn't find the cap anywhere. What are the chances that the injectors are clogged? Or is there something else I should try first. I did take the return line off to see if it was getting fuel and it did start pumping fuel out after about half a minute after it started. I think it is a whole lot more likely that trash got up in the system than the fuel pump going out all at once. Any ideas? It will start and idle but the RPMs won't rev up. I checked the throttle linkage too and it seems to be okay.
I was thinking maybe I should modify a filter where I can attach an air line to it so that I can run some compressed air back through the fuel line from the first filter back to the tank.
Never mind. That did the trick! Whoo hoo!
Rest in peace Buddy.... we miss you. Eddie... this is my favorite tune. Always brings a smile and sometimes a tear.
awesome!
there is a special socket for the fuel jumper lines
I'll make a rather pithy and cogent compliment: Given the choice....given the choice of,say, a 2016 (manufactuer name) car or this PD 4104 bus, which would be a dream vechicle (for me this bus...don't worry, I'm not buying anyone's beloved property from them..:)) I noticed by the way that zimtok/Just Stuff's channell (the uploader) switched name back to zimtok, which I've preferred as well since it was the original username.!
This video is almost 9 years old! Crowns sound exactly the same as this GMC when being shifted, esp.the rear transmission//engined ones.
those are all exhaust valves in the head right
+Nathan Dial Yes they are exhaust valves (4 per cylinder). This is a 2 stroke engine the intake of air is achieved as the piston passes below the ports at the bottom of the cylinder.
@@zimtok hey brother, can you explain to me the torque specs on a 8v71 fuel injectors? I'm a greenhorn
hola si algien me pudiera ayuda para correr el rack de un gm diesel detroit 6 -71
Several things I'll mention in this "non tutorial" . If you have these engines , spend the money on the 1/2" deep line socket and the 1/2" and 5/16" tuneup wrenches , a timing tool is cheap , unless you spend the 200 bucks for a dial indicator tool . The torque on the bolts is about 25 / injector hold down .. 90 / rocker stands .. 10-12 / jumper lines .. I might add you're only supposed to use those old style lines once but a lot of people reuse them . Another thing about that is you're supposed to pressurize the fuel system to check for leaks in those lines , or you run the risk of filling the crankcase with fuel . The injector tube should be thoroughly clean . Removing an injector that's been leaking on these engines is a bitch , and sometimes results in tube failure , necessitating a head removal .
+Ignignokt Mooninite I will admit that I was very lucky that I didn't need to remove the head to replace the injector tubes. What is not shown is this video is that I did a visual inspection of each tube with a bore scope to make sure they were not in too bad of condition. It was also apparent from the condition of the injectors that I removed that there was not any obvious problems. I also checked the rocker lash with a feeler gauge and was lucky there also as I didn't have to adjust any of them as they were all within spec.
Thanks for these tips on the proper tools!
Any tips as to where a good source is to buy new fuel lines?
@@h.l.devore9322 PC Industries out of wyoming has everything you could ever hope to need for a detroit. Great pricing, fast shipping too.
I didn't see a new seal washer put in the injector tube after cleaning. And it didn't look like any NeverSeize was put on the injector.
+gravelydon No seal washer on a Driptroit . The injector presses down on the copper tube where it meets the head at the tip .
