  • Today you guys get to follow me along as I replace the intermediate steering shaft on my 2011 Chevrolet (Chevy) Silverado 3500 HD. Mine is a 6.0 liter Vortec, but the steps are the same for a Duramax diesel truck as well.
    The part number I am using today is a Dorman steering shaft part number 425-183. They run right around $90 to $100 at your local parts store. I waited until Advance Auto Parts sent me a 20% of coupon in my email and used that and got mine for about $78 after tax.
    Replacing this part really went a long way to reducing my steering noise or the steering rattling or clunking noise that you hear under the dash or near your feet. At first it almost sounds like your wheel is lose or your strut is shaking, but the more you listen to it you can tell it is actually coming from that U Joint inside the firewall of the truck right above your break pedal.
    This is a very simple project that you can do in your driveway in as little as 30 minutes if everything goes right… BUT I rarely have a project where EVERYthing goes right. Instead, it always seems there is one piece… one bolt… or one issue that really holds up the project. But, with that one issue I had, I was able to replace this part in about an hour and half. Now my truck rides much quieter. Time will tell how well the fix holds up.

    For anyone on the fence about this, jump. It took me 25 minutes and that includes dragging tools out and clean up. Im not dealing with rust though. I do recommend having a large 18" screwdriver or crowbar. I used it to push the shaft down with help from the back of the brake peddle arm. Would also recommend a magnetic stick for dropped nuts.

    Saved yourself some money by not taking it to a dealer . DIY is the way to go.

      I agree! I try to work on my own stuff when it’s within my abilities. I’m also more confident in my vehicles when I know more about them so learning to work on them is important.

      There could be other components in the front end that need attention. Have you checked the tie rods and ball joints?

    By doing the steering shaft replacement did you also see an improvement in steering wheel play while driving?

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  2 года назад +1

      Hi Zeth. Yes it did improve a little but the steering shaft is not normally the cause of steering wheel play in these trucks. The shaft is still solid but it freezes up and won’t extend up and down to adjust for movement in the steering components which is what causes the rattling or knocking noise. At least that was my experience. Thanks for watching!

    Did you happen to have a chirp sound. I’ve developed a chirping and not for say it’s bump related but it doesn’t make it better. So It sounds like it’s coming from my dash. I stuck my phone under the dash by firewall and I hear that clunking and chirp.

    • @PoplarRidge

      I did not have a chirp personally. I had a lot of clunking and banging sounds.

    I replaced my steering shaft on my 08 duramax but I did not secure my steering wheel. I believed I moved the wheel an inch or less. I haven’t drove it yet but How will I know if I messed up the spring inside the steering column?

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  2 года назад

      If it’s broke it will mess with your electrical components that feed through the steering wheel such as cruise control, air bag light may come on, radio adjustments on steering wheel may not work, etc.
