    Couple of things; in some cases the intermediate steering shaft can fix the clunk. Many times it's the steering column bushing/bearing (the white bushing you can see when you are pulling the intermediate shaft from the steering column). Second, instead of wrapping your nut and socket in tape to keep the nut on, put a piece of paper towel around the nut, put it in the socket, and tear off the excess. Nut will stay without falling out of the socket. That's a life saver in the tight footwell of those GMT800s.

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  3 года назад +1

      I actually did the trick with the paper towel to get that top pedal nut back in! So far with the shaft alone everything is quiet, but I won’t be surprised if I need to throw a bearing in it.

    This has been the fix for many years. The first thing you do is disconnect one end... Then fully extend and compress the shaft to redistribute the grease. That usually fixes it. If the clink comes back then you replace the shaft.

  • @Patriot-bn9om

    I was able to solve that clunking by using a zip tie to pull the play out of the steering shaft bearings. The bearings are in the plastic part (I believe it's the white plastic part in this video) around the steering shaft above the brake pedal. On my truck the plastic part has a hole on the edge pointed up. I just inserted a long zip tie through the hole and wrapped it around a part above it so I could tighten the zip tie and pull the bearing part tight so it doesn't move. 3 years later it's still working great.

    Dude, thank you for this video! I recently replaced my upper and lower control arms, front brakes, shocks and coil overs as well as inner and outer tie rods on my 08 sierra. It was in need for sure! 230K on the stock stuff. Of course other than the 2014 shocks and struts I bought for way cheap from a new take off that got lifted. Also, some new wheels and tires from a 2020 AT4. Its pretty nice. Rides like new! Then boom....About a week after my replacement I was driving on the freeway and hit a bump and heard a pop. All kinds of wonky noises now. Seems to be low speed turning, braking or just low speed in parking lots that are rough. On the highway nice and tight! Again, thanks for the video as I couldn't seem to figure it out and for 60 bucks for the OE part.... I'm down for sure! Sounds like this is my problem. I fixed this noise with 12 wooden toothpicks and never removing anything. The noise is from the part of the steering column that slides in and out of itself and there is a slight gap and tolerance that grows over time from use... From factory it has a little dimple pressed into the metal sleeve that crimps it tight to the inner sleeve... I just shoved in about a dozen toothpicks into the gap between the 2 columns that slide in and out of each other. No more noise, smooth and quite as new.

    Yeah, this noisy "clunking" issue should be thoroughly addressed. Why? Because a bad shaft can sound like a worn out tie rod end. Yep, JUST LIKE IT! So, if you take it to a shop they could easily scam you for front end parts you may not need. In my 2002 Burban, I had replaced the entire front steering just a few months before. So, I knew it wasn't that. This shaft was my noise maker, and it was irritating. So, make sure you check everything thoroughly, to be certain what your fix is going to be.

I also have an 02 Yukon Denali which is obviously pretty much the same as the Tahoe. I had a Tahoe till someone T-boned me and I loved it so much I got the upgraded version. Keep up the good content!

    Surprised that you did not replace the Steering Column Bearing at the same time. It's the less expensive part and the easiest to wear out. AND, you were right there!

    There are two T25 torx heads that come loose at the tilt joint. Take plastic cover off upper steering column where flasher button is. Start truck and turn wheel until you see them on top. Might were almost ready to fall out. I found them after doing everything else first.😖

    Go to ACE, buy a 5/8" cable clamp for $2.50, place it on the shaft and slide it to the top as far as it will go. Tighten clamp until it stops clunking. You're welcome. (You may have to slightly flatten the threads on the inside to get it to clear the shaft) I've done 50 or more, takes 5 minutes.

    • @RedHammerBodyShop
      @RedHammerBodyShop 3 года назад +1

      @@AP-st1li You pop the hood, cut enough of the cover off the shaft until you can see where it gets larger. (towards the firewall) Take the clamp and file just enough off the threads on the inside so that it slides over the shaft. Then put the LOCK part of the clamp and nuts on. Slide the clamp up as far as you can on the shaft and tighten it down until it starts biting into the shaft. Test drive it, if it still clunks, tighten the nuts another round. Keep repeating until it stops, you dont want it too tight because it still needs to be able to slide over the inner shaft to keep from damaging the column bushings. All you want to do is distort the shaft enough that it takes up the slop.

      @@AP-st1li you're welcome. Make sure the clamp doesn't rub the plug wire, sometimes its close.

    Might be a good idea to somehow annotate the video where you "adjusted" the shaft to let folks know that didn't fix the problem. The are a few videos running around showing how to fix the GMT800 clunk (bearing replacement, shaft replacement, shaft adjustment, hose clamp, etc), and none of them seem to show long-term effectiveness.
    I replaced the bearing and the upper shaft on my 01 Yukon XL 2500 with only 99K miles just a few months ago. Bearing was the green Dorman; the shaft is the ACDelco unit (supposedly updated). The problem has mostly gone away, but I still feel the very occasional jiggle that makes me worry it'll come back. Top tip to anyone who struggles getting the upper shaft to slip into place on the lower... throw the shaft in the freezer for a few hours. I froze mine overnight and it slipped right in.

      I didn’t do the upper bearing, so I’ll be testing this fix out and if it returns we’ll do the bearing then I’ll make an update video again on the complete repair.

    I’ve owned many Tahoe’s and Silverado’s . The very first thing I do is drill and tap that shaft... add a zerk fitting... grease it and you won’t have to jack it off every 5k miles .
