This week, we go behind the scenes with Aptera co-founder and CEO Chris Anthony to learn about the inspiration behind creating the most unique and efficient solar powered vehicle in the world. Aptera is a San Diego based automaker expected to produce affordable EVs with battery packs of 25, 42, 60 and 100 kWh in size. The result is an EV with a 300+ mpgE efficiency and a range in excess of 1,000 miles. The carbon fiber design, coupled with meticulous engineered has developed what Aptera calls mathematically the single most efficient design in the world.

This is the only solar vehicle that actually makes sense because it is so efficient.
Compared to the other solar vehicles?! Didn't think there were any other solar vehicles. Enlighten me.
@@rcpmacthere are. Google might help you.
@@rcpmacThere are several. The Lightyear One is probably the most notable. Do a google search for “cars with solar panels”. None are focused on efficiency to the degree as Aptera.
@@rcpmac There were two others. The Sono Sion was probably the one being referred to. Solar panels, but otherwise a fairly mundane boxy SUV shape, so the miles/kWh was pretty poor in comparison. The other was the Lightyear Two, very little is known about it, but from teasers it looked like an SUV but a bit more aero than the Sion. They both went bust earlier this year. They're trying to resurrect the LY2. I'm ignoring the LY0 because it was basically just a prototype that you could buy for $250k (it was the model which took down the company).
The new Prius also has a solar option, however it only gives a very small amount of charge compared to the Aptera.
Aptera is an excellent example how the humanity at large needs to start rethinking about our actions...efficiency. Aptera did that for us when it comes to transportation.
I want them to make a boat!!! I’m so ready for a solar boat that you can afford. We are a 3 Tesla household 😊
@natnathutchins funny you should say that, Aptera co-CEO Chris Anthony built carbon fiber boats before launching Aptera.
@@natnathutchins I want them to make a velomobile. With solar panels I don't think you would need to ever need to charge that thing.
@@natnathutchins Silent Yachts makes nice solar boats. Would be good if the prices come down, though.
@@williampotter3369You must be confused. It climbed Double Peak Drive like a champ.

Best review I've seen to this date. Just let Chris sell his creation, no one knows it better. Can't wait until I get mine. Launch Edition is just about sold out.
As a Slovenian, I'm actually surprised the motor was co-designed between Aptera and Alaphe. I had no idea the company even existed, and now I feel proud that our small nation, that most people don't know can help with this.
Co-developed might be giving Aptera too much credit. Elaphe tweaked the windings for efficiency and moved some connections from their existing design. Still great tech and what is good for Aptera is good for Elaphe.
In really rooting for aptera to thrive! This is an excellent product
I like the fact that he openly says he uses teslas himself and is influenced by them that means the guys is a open minded humble person that would change if it’s needed.
Sandy Munro recommends to all the OEM’s to copy Tesla interface or they will fall behind. Period.
@@swatisquantum 🤣🤣🤣
@@swatisquantum Some people prefer simplicity. Tesla’s software is bloated and filled with features most people will never use.
@@swatisquantum My ex’s model Y had software issues frequently. 🤦🏻♂️
I like the knock for the side doors, but the back should really be a foot-waving interface so you can open it with your hands full. I feel like that happens so often when loading into the back of a vehicle.
agree 100%
I'm pretty sure you could just kick the underside and the sensor would still work since it's very likely a microphone
The common solution I've seen, similar to the GM products like their Chevy SS or Corvette, reads the key in your pocket as you approach the car and it unlocks and will allow you to press the "Start" button. Something along that line would seem like a viable approach. I didn't hear Chris make any definite comment regarding their access to the car other than knock on the body. I really doubt that that is all of it...
@@MrGaryGG48 'start button', What's that?
Do take the offer and visit Aptera in San Diego, post a video of the shop and the drive. Collect as many questions beforehand that people might have and then include them.
I would love to do this!!!
drill them on deep snow.
@dtl it will struggle with roads that have snow between the tyre tracks. no chance. will be a bumpy ride. and the wheel covers will plow into thick snow and break. they have to expose more wheel or be flexible or movable somehow. design it for 20 cm thick wet and icy snow. and it needs solar on the sides for extreme latitudes because the sun will almost come from the side. there will only be a few hours of sun in winter and snow reflects light. it will be overcast. so the best aptera can do is to winterise, insulate the battery and have selective cooling based on temperature. slap solar all around and under the car. stick one extra rear wheel on it and make it with space for people in the rear. the boot ledge needs to be from hard wear material. biccyles scratch up things. mayb emake the lid go all the way back. long slim things like skis or flooring boards will appreciate that.
lol. also check out aubrey de grey.@@ItsKimJava
Safety is also improved by the shape. Most impacts will be glancing blows off the curved surfaces, not square to a flat body panel.
Probably worth mentioning ... if you invest $10K or more in Aptera, you can buy one of the first 2000 vehicles made. Otherwise you'll be waiting years longer, behind their thousands of pre-orders. There are currently 1,356 such investors. 🙂
Thank you, Kim, for covering Aptera in such a great way. It is such an exciting vehicle, can't wait to get one.
Thanks for watching and the kind words
How many seats are there?
Chris spoke in the same way.

I was lucky enough to get a ride in that gamma vehicle last fall, and I can tell you it's going to be awesome. It was very quick, but eerily silent, no real wind noise over that sleek body. Talk about the perfect first vehicle for a new teen driver.. Safe, zero emission, zero fuel cost to drive to school every day. Low initial cost. Very safe to drive. No fuel, no tune-ups, no transmission.

To be honest, positive way, it looks very funky to me, and it reminds me of the vehicle you may see in The Jetsons. I live in LA. I can drive it around my neighborhood daily base. I bet I would love it when I see it in person- well done! I love it!🥰

It's a sports car. 2 seat, carbon fiber body, eye catching looks, fast, and sure, the most efficient car on the road.
Definitely the knock knock sensor. A touch sensor would always leave a smudge if the car is dirty. Just my way of thinking.
Might be a problem if one is having an arthritis flare though. Would need to carry around a vehicle entry hammer.
Agreed, a dirty car and swipe- no thanks
I would much prefer a touch button with a pop out like the mach e back doors. The knocking probably wont work covered in ice
Thanks for covering the Aptera! I've had mine on order, and I'm excited to drive mine home from the factory, hopefully around this time next year.
Thanks for covering Aptera, Kim!! So awesome. Best one so far!

Been watching this for 20 plus years. I am so excited to see it finally come to market. Best part now is I may be able to buy it too. 20 years ago not so much. Love this vehicle and it's high tech.
This car was designed 20 years ago and inspired by the Corbin Motors Sparrow. The company was an investor favorite until some conventional automotive MBA's executives were added to run the company in 2008 causing the company to be bankrupt in 2011 by straying from the original design. What you see now in 2023 is the original design.
@@rfarevaloI believe that what caused the company to initially go belly up was that it was relying much more on a government subsidy than private investors to finance the vehicle's production. But when the government added the stipulation that only four-wheelers qualified for these subsidies, the owners realized that since their vehicle fell under the classification of a motorcycle, they were a no-go so all the investors were refunded their money and the idea was abandoned. Years later when the government modified the rules so that three-wheelers also qualified for government assistance, these two got back together after separately founding successful technology endeavors in different fields during the interim, and that's how we got here. What we see now is how far technology has come along during these past 10+ years. But the basic design is the same as what was being shown back in 2009
@@bardofoc No you are wong. At no point did 3 wheeler motorcycles qualify for government subsides in California. The company failed because they tried to make a 4 wheeler and 3 wheeler reservation holders like myself were burned and purchased other 3 wheelers like the Corbin Sparrow and NMG. The company was directionless under the 4 wheel administration and never produced a working 4 wheel prototype. You can't get investors without a working 4 wheel prototype. Yet the 3 wheel Aptera EV was what the public desired.
@@rfarevalo I, too, was there from the beginning. It was a political (legal management) mistake to bring on two Detroit executives who kicked out Steve & Chris, then ruined the company.
This is the car that I want. Efficient and fun.
Same here
Aptera is a motorcycle , not a car.
@@vic321344 Yes we know government classifies 3 wheeled vehicles as "motorcycles". But, so what? Common sense is sometimes failed by bureaucratic definitions. Especially with something unique.
7:15 definitely i like knock knock more cus i kinda know how those work so i think it's probably more reliable than touch button but personally i prefer just normal momentary buttons.
Yeah I don't like rubbing my hand on my car
I’m curious about winter (snowy) weather. How will it handle. I love the futuristic design!
I'm keeping my Tacoma for messy winter driving until the roads are cleared and dry. I don't want to dirty my Aptera. 😋😊🤣
Yeah, probably not good to drive for the winter months.
Great, I wish them success! Hopefully, by launch date they'll clean up the infotainment UI and make it a lot more beautiful.
At 6:04, if I understood correctly, the phone authenticates you and then the knock-knock will unlock the door. So a stranger walking up and knocking on it won't unlock it? This seems like an important point.

I'm an early reservation holder for Aptera and have been following Aptera's journey for quite some time. I love to see I'm still finding new and insightful content from creators like yourself. To speak on the "Knock Knock" system I honestly would prefer a more sleek design like a hand gesture across a designated part of the vehicle. The Aptera is so sleek itself, any proprietary function should match that esthetic. Love the content by the way, you just gained a new subscriber.
Where do you live? Are you anywhere near snow or cold temps? If you are can you message me about how well it does in winter when you get to drive it.
Im interested in Aptera but Im still skeptical about its winter/ice and lots of snow driving as my nissan almera has trouble sometimes during winter.

VERY cool tech ideas in this "motorcycle". I absolutely love it.
It’s an autocycle

Outstanding video! I'm glad that I watched the bonus section, but wow, that's burying the lead. I've been considering purchasing this autocycle for a while now, but I think that's the first time I heard that stat.
The lack of eligibility for the $7.5K federal tax credit is going to hurt Aptera sales a lot.
Which is horrible, as this autocycle seems the most deserving!
I agree, Aptera's approach is the direction that future EV design must go. Relative to rising battery material demand, high efficiency design with solar-assist and smaller fast-charge battery packs will be required for an affordable EV. And with Aptera, it's affordable while still being FUN to drive.
I put in my pre-order a year and a half ago. Rooting for them but they are sure taking a long time.
Keep the faith! Good cooking takes time 😅
Been waiting to see the Aptera up close, fingers crossed it comes to Europe, thanks guys👍.
Not a fan of the knock to open, It has to work even if its caked in ice. On a traditional door handle you force it open to break the ice. Without any moving parts for a door handle, it doesn't look like it will work if its covered in ice
Knocking would be my choice. And as a retired engineer, all it took was Cd=0.13. Very obviously that was the focus with the body shape. Move away from inefficient bodies and fuel consumption. It fits me just fine.
Australia has 20million buildings and 20million vehicles.
Australia can have 20million rooftops solar PV all connected to the existing national grid.
20million EVs big batteries selfplug-in and trickle charging or daytrading electricity.
20million 100kwh battery connected to the grid is 2,000gWh in storage daily.
Most vehicles are parked 23hrs every day and drive building to building.
Yes the voltage is calculated at 100 volts per meter.

I like the knock knock idea. These cars have personality. Actually… sometimes my tesla Model 3 doesn’t open with the phone key… usually a few knocks on the window does the trick! 😂
I ordered two Launch Edition Aptera for me and my son. We are both looking forward to driving them! ☀️⚡️
They should come out with an AirWolf version.
Oh yes, and for the low speed pedestrian warning sound, it should play the theme song.
What I want from this car is an outlet to charge ebikes or to cook. having easy access to electricity makes camping so much more convenient.
Not enough room for camping gear though.
I love the Aptera design and I’m tempted to get one, but I live in Minnesota so I’ll have to wait until they release wheel covers that can be swapped out in the winter. 1-2” of clearance is not going to work when there’s snow. (I’m guessing this thing will not be a very good snow plow 😂)
If the offroad covers are not high enough then their right to repair stance should allow for making them. You arent the first person to think about this and if I need the clearance for trails I'll make the designs available online myself. If they are as easy to swap as planned I'll keep the smaller set in the vehicle behind the seats all the time incase a trail is rough. 2-5 minutes to swap em is nothing compared to chaining up in the winter.

Can you imagine if all the cars on the road looked something like this? ......these are what cars of the future looked like when I was a kid (a long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away & all that!).
It is maybe a pity that on a drive on national (US) TV it struggled to get up a gentle hill & was over heating (the motors / electrics) & had to pull over. So maybe that '1000' mile range is only available going down hill.....if you can find a long enough hill.
Do your research. It had just come back from EU and they had not installed the motor cooling system. More of a logistics snafu
@@johnhayes3314 yeah, thanks for that John, I did in fact know that, & regardless of the reason, it was still a pity that on national US TV the presenter had to pull over while going up a gentle gradient due to over heating problems. The comment re a 1000 mile down hill was clearly a light hearted comment. Never mind.
I like what my car does (2016 Hyundai Genesis). No knocking or swiping of hand. No swinging your foot under the back of the car. When I walk up to the rear of the locked car/trunk, the car recognizes the key in my pocket and automatically opens the trunk lid. There is a drawback to this however. I have walked up to my car in a parking space and if I take too much time passing by the trunk, it will pop open (it beeps three times to let you know it recognizes the key) on its own and then I have to shut it manually. It is a nice feature since I don't have to worry about my hands being full and trying to do anything physically to get the trunk to open.
YESSS KIM!!! I have been watching your Tesla videos since I have a Y. I am glad you did a video over Aptera. I actually placed an order the beginning of the year once I heard the will be going into production soon. Keep producing quality content.
I love the Knock Knock feature, and the vehicle. I hope that this company does well.
Yes, the "knock" feature would be THE best! Especially if it will be programmable for added security and uniqness.
250 miles out of 25 kWh is wild. My base level model 3 gets 240 from 50 kWh. My girlfriend's hybrid Jeep gets 21 miles from 17 kWh.
I'm a reservation holder and investor- great information in this video. On a minor note, I would prefer a simple touch system to open the doors. "Knock Knock" just hits me as gimmicky.
Aptera will do well because it's so cheap to drive, while other vehicles are too expensive to drive.
Not a heater (actually I want one) but... hopefully they fix the cooling system. Maybe they can try nanoflow cells. That can actually solve lots of their problems. They may try to think about adding infrared solar cells on the doors and even on the belly.
Fantastic for solo drivers commuting to work. Park in an open lot and gain range while it sits. I'm super interested. Chris alluded to a commercial variant. That could be game changing for express delivery of one or a few items. The operating costs would be crazy low.
Why is a motorcycle that is wider than a hummer H1 fantastic for commuting to work?
I liked it before I watched the video and now I want one. Cool that the factory is down in SD. Solar charging, range and regenerative braking are my favorite features. Definitely looking into this company 👏
The funny thing is they are so efficient at a time Ford, Tesla, and others are going to push the narrative that since you will always be within 50 miles of a fast charger.
I'd say no to tapping and 'absolutely not' to rubbing my hand to open it. We have so much dust in the air here my hand would cause scratches, and get dirty to boot.
I hope Aptera will be the first to license FSD technology from Tesla
Current plan is to use OpenPilot
I love the Knock Knock idea
That's amazing how they made this squishy looking car get a 5 star safety rating. Insane!
Can't wait for mine! Was originally 13,xxx on the reservation. But now on the Accelerator at 6xx.
a built in mppt controller that works with standard panels is something I really hope for in the future!
This Aptera prototype has been around for a long time, I hope they will find a way to get it into mass production
Aptera isn't going to replace a Model X or R1S. It can replace the LEAF in a two car household.
I suggest that Aptera consider a faster than 50kW charger. Since the battery is small compared with conventional EVs and the vehicle needs 1/4 the energy per mile, if it had a 150kW charger it would be able to fully charge in 10-15 minutes which would be a huge advantage over conventional EV’s on road trips.
The charge speed also depends on battery technology / chemistry - if you charge too fast, you'ld damage the battery. And especially if you have a smaller battery, you must charge with less power compared to a bigger capacity one. 50kW in an Aptera is equivalent to 100-150kW in a Tesla M3, because the Aptera uses less energy for the same distance.
Considering how little energy is needed by the Aptera, a 50kW fast charging capability is like having a 100 or 150kW on other EVs.
What is more important is how long it will keep a charging power of 50kW, what is the charging curve ? If it can keep a mostly flat 50kW charging power from 0 to 90% before falling, it would charge quite fast in real life compared to another EV with a 100kW peak charger but a non flat charging curve.
I love the reference to a Cirrus aircraft.
Great review. Cool car. I am a one car person and this wouldn’t suffice for that I believe (versus say an M3 or MY) although I do drive with one or two people 99% of the time. Too bad Kim couldn’t drive it. This becoming my favorite EV channel as she doesn’t simply sit behind a desk and regurgitate the same thing every on else is regurgitating.
There's some discussion about changing the tire. But where's the spare?
One question. How do they get these on traditional shipping trucks? They usually don't have anything in the middle.
That... Is a great question
Flatbeds can carry up to 4 of these
How do you change a tire with a wheel in it?
Super excited to get mine for sure. 😁
"Touch" is no good in ice and snow. "Knock-knock" is better.
It’s an interesting concept! I like the solar panels. Seems like it would be a good daily driver to and from work etc.
Amazing car! The door-knocking is funny, but only for the first week. Better to have a touch sensor button.
Kim cool video and good questions like changing a tire. Where is the spare? Jack etc. I would kill the knock sensor just something to fail. Use the card or phone like Tesla. Unless they lock out the knock sensor I can see traveling down the road junk of tire goes up hits the knock area and the door opens. Maybe not, but I have one on my LG Fridge and something we never use now. It would be cool to see how it handles a high speed lane change, stable? Something drops in front of you on the interstate and try to dodge it. More room would be good and something to cover that back area. Thief’s will break in Tesla’s so here they can see what’s in the back. Seem like a this is a good home to work car. Maybe around town if you cover the packages in the back. Like the skin color idea just wrap it. The solar roof and power is great. Good they are using Tesla chargers. Summer and winter testing needed. I’d help test for them. S FL heat has been off the charts this year. Hope you get out to drive the car or motorcycle. Like that helps with the insurance costs.
No spare - just like most modern cars. They will have jack points and I'm assuming the same kind of small jack everything else has shipped for 20 years. The knock knock does use your phone or RFID to authenticate; it is just an alternative to a physical handle. They did the moose test in the beta and video analysis using two methods by the community showed it was at 48 mph; not record breaking but well above average. The solar hatch is opaque which makes content very hidden; their are hooks for hanging the pet net soo if you wanted the back contents fully blocked a simpler curtain would do it. Some have discussed making a solid cover behind the seats for thermal insulation to allow the vhac to avoid heating/cooling the cargo area.
use heat exchanger to cool down motor and transfer this heat at the cabin. so during winter you can get heat from the 3 motor and the battery and inverter during summer by pass vent just heat will be on the air.
I'm from New England; when the car is covered in ice, what will be the best way to open the door? Multiple ways might be best; if it's covered in ice it might be nice to just swipe my phone over the ice as the ice should be thin enough that the phone would open the car door.
Love the knock knock feature
I hope they can mass produce!!!!! Ive heard about this company back in 2009 and Ive never seen one on the road yet!!!
i think the swipe might be better than the knock knock...i can see someone getting so upset if the sensor fails and they are trying to get in and the start beating the crap out of the car. The knock knock kinds of reminds me of the LG refrigerator. i love the Aptera though wish them luck.

Excellent video as always Kim, can’t wait to get ours!
I appreciate that the different options were mentioned (although I think the different levels of solar panels was skipped). I hate it when other people mention the price of the base model and the range of the largest battery and give people the wrong idea. May be the best intro to Aptera that I have seen and I have been following the company for a while now.
I’m intrigued by this! I learned long ago that direct drag is always more than indirect drag and that having the rear of the car slope to a point the car goes through the air more efficiently and there is less turbulence.
Also, in cities like Toronto Ontario Canada, motorcycles are not charged for onstreet parking witch could be a big bonus although it does take up more space than a traditional motorbike. It gets cold in Canada for a good part of the year, how is the cold weather performance? It looks good, keep it up.
