    Look at him trot and jump! I'm SO happy that NIgel's last years are free of the neglect and pain he suffered for who knows how long by people who should be deeply ashamed but aren't. You are the soul of kindness and compassion, going above and beyond for this little old guy! Losing vision isn't as dire for animals as it is for us, since they depend more on hearing and smell than vision. Blind animals do well as long as their environment doesn't change. Many more years for our favorite cranky unicorn!❤🧡💕

    You don't have to ride your horses for them to be happy. If you rode more and hurt your back worse, who would look after them? You are an accomplished dedicated horse keeper, the proof being in their shiny coats and happy faces. It's not for other horse owners to judge how often you should ride, and you probably know more about keeping horses than they do.

      Indeed... it's so easy for miniatures to get fat, well done on his ration! As time went on for my mini, who also gradually went blind, I found it easier to put a scrunchi at the base of his forelock to allow his eyes to see my shadow moving while I worked with him. I talked the entire time I was around him, even if it was just humming, so that sense came into play. He too was a stallion into his late years, also hard to halter as his eyesight regressed. The talking really helped.

    After hearing your explanation of ppid I think my son's horse had it. She was 21 years old when we bought her and we just clipped her for years. When she was 28 she was kicked in the head and had a bad sinus infection. the vet had me give her an extremely high dose of penicillin for a long time. It cleared up the infection but the surprise was she shed out norminally every year after that. We finally were able to see her natural color, Liver chestnut.

    • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles 4 дня назад +1

      I would argue that's why most people do not own horses. Some of them are not expensive to keep, but any animal gets more expensive to care for as they age due to their different health and dietary requirements.
      And when we're talking about horses, well, you already have to own or rent enough land, with fencing and shelter, or be able to afford a boarding fee, which makes the bar for entry too high for most people. If you can afford the land/shelter and its taxes or a local stable's boarding fee easily, you can probably afford a horse. If you can afford the land/shelter and its taxes, or a local boarding stable's fee, but only barely, then you should probably not get a horse.
      That being said, there are definitely irresponsible people out there who'd get a horse anyway and do something ridiculous like try to keep it in their backyard in the middle of a city suburb.

I respect your wealth of knowledge gained thru years of experience and training as well as your continuing efforts to learn and adapt. As a caretaker to 19 dogs i totally understand Nigel. I have 2 older than dirt boys who are the same. They expect meals at the same time, fixed the same way, and served in the same place. Neither of them want to be held or touched. They enjoy living life on their terms and i just let them do their thing. Thank you for what you give of yourself to your horses. Four out of five of my horses were diagnosed with PPID
    I can say it felt like I have owned million dollar horses due to their meds, special feed, tested lower sugar hay, supplements and allllllll of my time tending to it, what comes with it , the research and stress.😮 I would do it again in a heartbeat and I know the Prascend and the calculated meals extended their lives well beyond what the vets expected. They were almost all into their thirties when the meds just didn't work anymore. I do wish more vets would suggest routinely testing horses each year starting at a certain age..I had one that got diagnosed at 12 and it was me that forced my reluctant vet to test him for it..I couldn't help but say I knew it sarcasticly to them..I already knew the very early symptoms from the others. It takes a lot and having two that had it at once was never something I would have expected. Looking into a few younger horses next time that are not breed predisposed ..like all mine were! Love them all and miss all the work and love I poured into them❤

    My 27 y.o. (going on 28 in January) Knabstrupper mix gelding was diagnosed with cushing last summer. His main symptoms were the long haircoat and a significant loss of weight. He's getting a pill a day for it and is doing mighty fine now, regaining most of the lost weight. Luckily he doesn't have any other problems usually linked to cushing (such as laminitis etc.). He does have poor vision, too, which my vet explained to me as a fairly common issue with leopard horses, especially when they're getting older.

    Thank you for another great one. Be blessed

    I’m amazed at Nigel’s little jump. He loves you CC in his own way. As a nurse, little old guys can be grumps, until they get attention. I used to remind younger nurses that most likely they were just tired and didn’t feel good. When you are 25 someone has to clue you in. At 55 I understand kinda how they feel ❤He is precious!

    My granddaughter's aged Appaloosa gelding was recently diagnosed with Cushings. I've been helping her with the medication costs and he seems to be doing quite well. He is mainly used for trail riding and is fussed over like he's a million dollar show horse. He was a horse no one wanted either and his owner was scared of him so she gave him to my granddaughter and he has thrived with her in charge. I knew dogs could get Cushings but I didn't know horses could too, I am thankful there is medication that will improve their lives.

    Your knowledge of horse and animal diseases is amazing! You explain things so well that anyone can understand the material. I learn something every time I watch. And I have fallen
    in love with a little spotted horse! Animal and Human pharmacology is so closely related. I would be braiding his mane and tail every day I could catch him! Ziggy's winter coat is also coming in already too! To bad you can't put Nigel and Ziggy in together💓💓!

    Thank you C.C. for a visit and talking about your horses and the care you provide for them in detail. The hardest part for caring for horses is the realization that the same care is needed for ourselves and without a newer set of problems gets baked in to their care. Self care deserves its own priority too. ⾺

    I know what it's like ...
    My cat Sam was drinking and urinating more and more a year ago .
    And then I noticed he lost weight ...
    I suspected Diabetes and the Vet confirmed that .
    He needs a special diet and Insulin injections twice a day at the same time .
    8 in the morning , 8 in the evening .
    It's expensive too ..
    But he is only 11 and feels much better with his treatment .
    As he doesn't allow anyone else to inject him - not even my husband - I am on a very strict time regime ...
    I hope Nigel will feel better with his medication ...
    I do worry about Ziggy as well .
    I know you did not intend too keep him , but if he has a medical condition that makes him hard to sell , he could have no better place then with you .

    Honey, you are doing such a great job and you are a human being. Having an injury takes away a lot of the fun in life and sometimes derails us. It is such a treat to hear your speaking voice when you call out to your horses ....using their names. Take good care of your back like you take good care of the horses...You deserve special time outs as well and treatment. Namaste' and love from Humboldt County, California.

    ziggy isn’t weird. I love to see he has a chance to be free, running and enjoying life. I’m not sure I understand his previous life but if all he did was walk in a line behind other horses giving trail rides, - it must be something he hasn’t had - freedom. Love Ziggy. He needs a loving 100% of the time best human friend.

    • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles 4 дня назад

      It depends on the dude ranch/trail ride establishment. There's one locally where the horses are worked half a day, then released into a massive pasture for the rest of the day/night. They also get days off. But there are establishments where the horses are all worked all day or stand tied in the hot sun with no water all day, and their tack may not even fit properly. A lot of trail ride places don't treat their animals great, so if you go to one, watch out for that. Hard to say what kind of place Ziggy was at before.
