Atomos Academy: Setup ProRes RAW on the LUMIX S1H + NINJA V with Photo Joseph

- The Panasonic LUMIX S1H and ATOMOS Ninja V will soon be able to record 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW - and PhotoJoseph is here to show it to you in this preview with pre-production firmware. You'll see how to enable RAW output and recording, learn what resolutions and framerates are supported in both NTSC and PAL, and get some hints on how to expose when shooting ProRes RAW. Then, you'll see in Final Cut Pro X how easy it is to recover a 4+ stops over REC.709 exposed shot, and how to manage both HDR and SDR editing from ProRes RAW files.
You can learn more about the shooting 5.9K RAW with the LUMIX S1H and NINJA V over at www.atomosacademy.com

finally my s1h will be in the league of raw.. cant wait
I have the Ninja and S1H set up as you do here, but in the Image Format menu, the "HDMI RAW Data Output" option is greyed out. Is there some setting I am missing? thx
Would love to see a full tutorial on HDR workflow and delivery (to RUclips). Anyways, super excited about this update for ProRes RAW. Been waiting for it.
Same here! This is by far the best explanation of the raw workflow in final cut that I've found, but I would still want to have a more in depth tutorial on the whole workflow, since there is some things i don't understand
Thanks guys. Be sure to sub on my channel as I am already working on that!
Keep these videos coming! Fantastic!
a very well one explanation and demonstration. I'll definitely be adding this to my kit.
Very thorough explanation of using ProRes RAW with the S1H. Thanks!
As a Shogun Inferno owner, I really don't understand why Atomos will release the new firmware only for the Ninja V.
And maybe a video on file size differences, Prores raw vs everything else. Again, great tutorials
Yep, there’s a lot to cover and I’ll get to all of that on my channel. This was meant to be a quick overview.
Good News ! Some point : 1) why to crop 5952 pixel (full sensor) to 5888 pixel ? ok, it its only a tiny differnece, but i don't understand the reason... maybe stabilization ? 2) 6K and 5.9 K full frame (internal rec) for me have a very bad rolling shutter performance . It goes way better on 4K full frame (internal).. i imagine it will be the same bad performance 5.9 via HDMI raw right ? Why not give the 4K option too ? .... 3) why not 6k 3/2 option ? (maybe also at 25 - 30 fps ?) 4) any news about Adobe Premiere prores raw support ? thanks
It appears one cannot record Prores Raw "Open Gate" 5952x3968 nor 5376x3584 from a Panasonic S1H to Atomos Ninja V. Does anyone know if Prores raw at the aforementioned resolutions can be recorded to a Atomos Ninja V Plus? [and by "know " I mean, actual experience with, not "it should"] I ask because the Sirui 50mm 1.6 Anamorphic would be a good fit for 3:2 FF particularly in Raw, but I can't find any links about it online. All the links are about the Ninja V, not the Ninja V+.
Can’t wait to get some Atomos Academy for Nikon z6
Heck yeah! Can't wait for the GH6 now!
Thanks for releasing this! Will there be an option to shoot open gate raw at 5952x3968 (3:2 aspect ratio) at 24p like you can internally? - not cropped to 16:9. The data rate at 24fps should be less than if you're outputting raw at 5888x3312 29.97p so should be feasible in theory? I know the Ninja V can already record the S1H's full 3:2 sensor area in regular Prores, that's limited to UHD resolution, but at least that's still something and it would be nice to do that in raw too.
hi ...why hdmi raw data ouput doesn't appear in my camera?
same here. Don't know why...
at 2 mins and 30 seconds you talk about HDMI time code output allowing you to trigger the atomos to record with the camera. i do the exact same thing you do and mine still says this operation is disabled while outputing raw data.
Raw doesn’t increase the dynamic range of the sensor. I wonder what the camera or Ninja V do with the signal to produce a viewable image. Since it’s raw data, it doesn’t have an image until a device interprets the data.
I think that's the point of the software upgrade for the Ninja V to interpret the information that usually gets compressed out. So normal recording is likely limiting the sensor as RAW is allowing it to show it at a greater potential. Also, there is a good article on DP review that discusses this in terms of bit depth and dynamic range. Search this to find it: "Raw bit depth is about dynamic range, not the number of colors you get to capture" I think it addresses your question.
I cant wait to try that out! :)
But if I'm not recording RAW, will I then be able to monitoring the 6k signal on my Ninja V while recording to my internal SD-card on the S1H?
Is it real 12-bit or just 10-bit in a fancy container?
MrLambda48 Yes it is real 12-bit. I have no idea how fancy the container is.
great video. I learnt a lot. Is the Pro Res RAW 12 bit?
Tally Ho Tech yes it is 12-bit.
What interface do I need from Blackmagic or AJA to use Ninja V for color grading 10 bit from my Macbook Pro? Can you demonstrate?
I know you said it wasn't possible with the S1H recording RAW, but would it possible to record internally on the S1 (in any capacity) while recording to HDMI? I'm using an S1 and Ninja Inferno. Would be nice if I could record a lower res version (as a backup) to qxd card while recording to the Ninja inferno. I can't find an option in the camera to do this anywhere. Otherwise, I would be open to any other suggestions to record to a backup card/drive.
I'm really looking forward to "May 25th Part 2" ... do we know when that will be?
For some reason when I change the time code on the camera doesn’t record

So its not possible to grade the RAW file in davinci ?
can u record 4k hdr 10bit vdo,,,, and then playback straight to 4k 10bit hdr tv/// no processing,, no computers,,,,
Could you tell us about the Prores Raw file size, like 500GB can shooting how many mins in 5.9K raw ?
at 3:11 I’m looking at the record menu, and it shows 23m39s recording time at 5.9K 29.97. The SSD in there is a 256GB and it should have been freshly formatted, so there’s your estimate.
Y’all better get some kind of firmware update for the EOS R5!! 😎
Where is the 2.0 firmware download?
On 25th may
No support for Shogun 7 or Neon?
There is an interview in FD Times with Jeromy Young of Atomos and on Page 57 he discusses this I detail. The short answer is it is on the roadmap for these recorders but nothing official yet.

So, basically the atomos high-end recorder have to wait... Sounds strange (non-sense)
No ProRes raw for FUJIFILM?
