19-year-old charged with 1st-degree murder after teen stabbed in Alberta high school

- A first-degree murder charge has been laid against a 19-year-old man after a teenage girl was stabbed to death at a Leduc high school in Alberta on Monday.
Police were called to Christ the King School shortly before 10 a.m. where the 17-year-old girl was reportedly stabbed by a fellow student in a classroom.
On Tuesday, the girl was identified as Jennifer Winkler.
STARS Air Ambulance landed beside the school and airlifted Winkler in critical condition to the University of Alberta Hospital, where she died from her injuries.
The victim and the suspect knew each other, police said.
The suspect left the school after the stabbing but was arrested without incident in a nearby neighbourhood at 12:20 p.m.
On Tuesday, police announced Dylan Thomas Poutney, 19, is facing one count of first-degree murder. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in an Edmonton court on Tuesday.
Winkler’s family created a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of her funeral. As of Tuesday morning, it had raised almost $25,000, surpassing its $15,000 goal.

Man that's a parent's absolute worst nightmare...frankly its unthinkable.
I have to wonder how many people were witnesses to this and if any of them tried to gang up on him to stop him ? It would be interesting to know .
@@gardensofthegods From what I've seen, knife attacks can happen so quickly that the victim and people around don't even know what's going on until it's too late...I imagine he must have fled the scene before anyone realized what he did....(?)

Heart felt sympathies to the girls family. This is a tragedy no family should have to endure. And this is the nightmare no parent ever wishes on another. As parents we are not supposed to bury our child.

Schools are supposed to be safe, but no where can ever be 100% safe. Obviously the perp is out of his mind in 1 form or another. The only advice I can give to students is
1) stay away from shady mofos.
2) if you notice a sign that someone's acting up in related fashion/behaviour tell the teacher or other school officials higher up
3) Always be aware of your surroundings and turn sideways when possible to avoid having people behind you out of sight

This is so sad she was just living her life and had to get cut short by this monster.
We get a lot of teen stabbing murders here in London and no one has a solution that works, yet. In our version of reality this is not a recommended way to settle things. In these kids reality apparently it is. I feel a bit like, "now we've created Frankenstein, how do we switch him off?".

Easy you legalize self defense. Teach people how defend themselves. As long as the weapons are legal you're at every disadvantage. Criminals don't mind committing a crime to use a weapon. Instead some MP in UK recommends 6pm curfew for men. The tragic irony is that an officer, people who would be in charge of this curfew, is who committed the crime recently in the UK
Maybe boosting mental health support, ending lockdowns, and removing zero tolerance policies for fighting. Kids need to Duke it out now and then.

This murder will again fuel the calls to reform the 'Not Criminally Responsible' laws in Canada ..
I've always hated those cases; where they get away with it because "muh mental illness" and get released back into the streets after being prescribed a few pills and a couple of counseling sessions, as if that doesn't make them a murderer anymore. I remember a few years ago about that man in Canada who beheaded a guy on a bus and tried eating him like Hannibal Lector, yeah...he was released back into the public not long after, now under a new name apparently(to protect _him,_ but not us the people), if I recall correctly. As far as I'm concerned, _every_ single murderer has some kind of mental illness, because sane people do not commit murder--and therefore should be locked away literally forever, for the safety of the community and public at large.

I'm a critic of the current NCR rules because any defense team can present a case with a doctor as a witness citing any number of mental illnesses as a defense for their client's horrible actions. Also why under NCR should such a dangerously mentally ill person be released in say five years for killing four people while someone else go away for life under a regular sentence?

Seems like you think school staff have ESP. I feel like this is very rare to happen in Alberta you know with what happend in Calgary when a police officer died and blue crosses were laid all over the city and I think a lot of people are shocked when stuff like this happens and that’s when they come together as community to show respect.

I was 19 in high school, sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. He probably had quite a few personal and family issues. Unfortunate he had to go and stab a minor. Now he’s in jail.

Thats the story eh? Wow that's crazy. And people still brush off mental health problems in the youth . I know i suffered with mental health problems. Still do. Have been untreated, i try to self medicate but that doesn't work enough at all. Ive had my days, but i cant imagine hurting anyone. Sad that it happens. I know when i was young i like blacked out n choked a friend that had started a fight with me. Came to with friends screaming n crying for me to let him go, saying hes turning blue. Feel like im always on edge. I just thought it was how i was, n hated it. Then when i did realize, i reached out for help but was failed then too. Waiting to see another psychiatrist who might understand me better. I am bad at articulating what i mean and feel, especially in the moment. I get so anxious n just can't think, it sucks. Im glad ive been aware though, able to discern those feelings, so i dont act out in a negative way or blow up like a lot of the stories we hear lately. But the physical symptoms can take a real toll and wear me out.

Sad. This is somewhat unrelated, but I'm actually surprised that more kids don't get stabbed or killed by kids who get bullied badly. You'd think there'd be more stories like that with all the kids in the world and all the drama.

This is Alberta...but maybe a Christian/private school and didn't have the detector?
As someone who attended this school, we do not have metal detectors and I have never seen a school in my area with metal detectors either. I went to school with Dylan and my brother went to school with Jenny. It’s so heartbreaking but truly there was no way to tell what he was going to do. Bags are not searched unless there is suspicion of a person and their belongings. As far as I know he had just started attending the school and I believe they shared a class but cannot confirm 100%
On the bright side this guy will get the minimum 25 years in prison and won't be let out after 2 months like if he was 17 years old thanks to that worthless YCJA that protects young criminals.
Maybe there will be a mandatory self defence class starting up now in these schools.

When kids this young commit such terrible crimes, they do not fully understand the scope of spending the next 20 to 40 years of their lives in Prison from that young of an age! There are plenty of videos on You Tube showing young kids like this breaking down screaming and crying in court when they are sentenced to Life in prison. Because it is at that moment when the reality of their situation actually sinks in and they realize that their life is over!
But then again, this happened in Canada, so he will probably be out in less than 10 years!
