    Since few people are buying these trucks to drag race, how about a real-world comparison for everyday MPG, towing a 4000# boat or camper (on your 98-mile loop), and what the maintenance costs are for 100K miles. Those are the things that dictate buying decisions.

    As someone who is trying to decide between a the V6 and the Diesel i really appreciate this video. I'm curious as to what the diesel will be like after a tune. I've watched another video that puts the diesel around 7.8 seconds after being tuned with durmaxtuners tune #4. That would be a close and warranty voiding race!
    I too would like to see a race between the two trucks with a loaded trailer. I would expect to see the v6 suffer defeat, but maybe.. just maybe those extra 2 gears will come to the rescue!

      @mike3963 Год назад +3

      The best way to think about torque vs horsepower is horsepower is horsepower is what speed you’ll go and torque is how fast you’ll get there. A way one of my friends explained it is horsepower is how hard you’ll hit the wall but torque is how far you’ll go through the wall. Horsepower is overall power, torque is how well that power is put down.
      Sorry for the multiple explanations. Just a few different ways to think about it. My mind has to have multiple ways to think about it to really understand anything.

  • @etnies88

    My tuned 2.8 is a rocket with emissions still intact. I keep it on the tow tune because the sport economy tune sometimes is too much for me. Mine will be deleted soon as my tuner provides the flash. Numbers around 250/500tq. In stock form the 2.8 is a turd.

    • @tanners.6524
      @tanners.6524 7 лет назад +3

      God I wish someone, anyone would just put a damn V8 in a mid size, I would buy it so fast. MPG's won't even suffer, the engine won't be doing any work pushing a mid size. 380hp+ would be nice and that v8 sound in a Tacoma or Colorado... beauty.

    • @Greendude33
      @Greendude33 7 лет назад

      ohgodwhat1 the current gen 5.3 is a monster 380HP and 412 ft-lbs of torque when you use e85..

    • @ohgodwhat1
      @ohgodwhat1 7 лет назад +1

      Yea, the current 5.3 is way more powerful for sure. Was more just calling out that the current gen v6 is probably quicker than the old v8's that people seem to so fondly remember. So with v6 fuel efficiency you can still have a faster truck than what a v8 used to provide.
      But horsepower is always a good thing and can't argue with a v8 sound :)

    Kent/Mr. Truck is on to something...drag race with trailers!!

  • @farmerallis
    @farmerallis 7 лет назад +8

    Why is this an "age old question"? It's simple, horsepower wins acceleration. So whichever truck has more HP will win, in this case, the V6. Not rocket science.

    • @RuggedSportsmen
      @RuggedSportsmen 7 лет назад

      Fucking idiot hahahahahahahaha duramax is pushing like twice more horsepower and it lost

    • @Squishysforbreakfast
      @Squishysforbreakfast 7 лет назад +3

      Torque wins acceleration; that's why the diesel was ahead off the line. Horsepower is for speed though; it will be able to keep accelerating long after the diesel puffs out. In the streets the diesel will feel punchy alive and quick; but when you get on the highway you'll want the V6.

    • @unknownunknowns
      @unknownunknowns 7 лет назад

      farmerallis Depends on what you tug.

    • @farmerallis
      @farmerallis 7 лет назад +2

      I knew someone would take the bait. Torque does not win acceleration. The vehicle with more HP to weight will always win a 0-60, unless the vehicle that makes more HP also makes like 20 ft-lbs of torque; in that case it would take a very long time to rev and something with more torque and less HP might have a chance at winning a 0-60. Torque gets things moving and keeps them moving with less work (ie horsepower). The diesel was not faster off the line because it makes more peak torque than the gasser; it's because it makes more torque (and therefore more HP) at a much lower RPM than the gas truck. Once the gas engine revs to make more torque, and thus more HP, it accelerates faster, whereas the diesel runs out of RPMs and HP.

    • @farmerallis
      @farmerallis 7 лет назад

      No it doesn't.

  • @unknownunknowns

    It seems like horsepower is more useful for vehicles that have a lighter mass and a lower drag coefficient while torque is for heavier mass and a higher drag coefficient.

    Diesels are not like they used to be, the V6 gas will be more reliable and efficient in the end. 4000$ just for the diesel option then when the warranty runs out and you start to have emission related problems with the diesel that can cost a fortune to fix, so that 4000$ diesel option plus emission component repairs after warranty could be thousands. I'd rather the V6 and buy the gas it'll be crazy cheaper in the long run.

    The Colorado looks like a sports car compared to the brick like front end of the Canyon. The Colorado is unique. The Canyon looks like it 's big brother. To each his own I guess but the Colorado looks WAY better to me. Car and Driver got 6.1 seconds to 60 mph too www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/colorado for the new 8 speed V6. Sounds like fun to me. Of course if you tow a LOT I can see the appeal of the Diesel.

    I lovey 2016 Colorado Z71 Ext Cab,4x4,V6! With tow package, 8.2" Chevy MyLink with Nav/Bose, out the door at 30k with a $3,500 discount That truck tows our travel trailer no sweat! I get 26 hyw 18 city empty. While towing 16 on the flats and 12-14 in the mountains of N. E. Nad upstate N. Y. On a recent trip from Foxboro Mass. where we store the trailer, to FLA. via rt 81 through Pa,WV,Md, Va, then rt 95N.C.,S. C., Ga south to the Keys we actually averaged about 16 mpg! With no shortage of power or stability, in case you're wondering, the trailer is 21.5' Lind and weights 4,500, the total GCVW over a Car scale was 10,098 lbs! With all the gear we had! That's not all that bad on gasoline! The Z71 Silverado 5.3 V8,4x4 Ext Cab we traded in for the Colorado only was able to average on the same trip last year was just 12 mpg! Sure it had more power, but weighs at1,000 more!

    Best comparison yet. But (there's always a but) the GMC is hauling more weight. Not in the trailer, but physically the truck weighs more. The Diesel engine is heavier, all that leather and techno do-dads of the higher trim level, plus running boards, larger rims all adds weight. A standard GMC Duramax would have had better times making the difference even more in favor of the Duramax model.

  • @aquaboy1650

    The diesel maybe slower at a stock, but they're also easy to tuned.
    My 2014 Toyota Hilux with 2.5L 2KD engine only has 143hp and 343 Nm Torque (253 lbft), but with light modification like a ecu tuning, delete EGR and intercooler the power boosted to 275 Hp and 600 Nm torque (442 lbft).

    Of course the forced induction (turbo) will do better at higher altitude and gives it a huge advantage, not just the paper torque #'s...Nice to see difference, but that should be explained, as that could be otherwise misleading to the folks that live lower down, especially near sea level. Be more of an apples to apples comparison there at lower elevation.
    Otherwise, test a forced induction gas against it (if it existed; talking similar on-paper numbers) and see who the real winner would be :D

    That Duramax suffers from the same problem that the Ecodiesel Ram does. It needs to be available in something other than an upper level trim. I could totally see the 'white fleet' buying companies buying them to tow. That would sell a lot of them. They're just too expensive and have unnecessary bells and whistles for that.

      I think it would be handy to know what to expect before purchasing a diesel. People think, oh it's a diesel and that they will save huge amounts in fuel. They don't think about the extra maintenance, higher pump prices, and the higher sticker price.
      I would love to see how it all works out. It can be for Colorado only. Is there be a benefit of owning a small diesel or is it snake oil?

    • @CoalitionChris

      Gets great mpg for me and where I live, diesel is cheaper. So the other costs are somewhat negated on my part. Thus why I say it can vary so much

    This hardly a fair test, as Mr. Truck has a lot more weight to haul. For the next drag, the first one to run over the TFL girl should win.

    Just got a Colorado diesel myself and that 2.8 is slow. I will be getting it tuned sometime. Great mpg but slow it should have been a twin turbo

    • @leadnsteel1428
      @leadnsteel1428 7 лет назад

      Yeah I probably won't get one but alot of people have been complaining about the poor acceleration of the diesel. I have to almost floor it to merge on the highway and thats with no loads.

    • @1badk20
      @1badk20 5 лет назад

      Turbo Lag is normal. Tune it and its a entirely different truck. My buddy has one that has an aftermarket intake, turbo back exhaust, and a tune and it will light up the tires from a complete stop by just flooring it.

    lol this needs to be seen by diesel fans everywhere. gas is most application especially in trucks are going to out run a diesel. the amount of times diesel get out run by me is unreal. Cant beat them for "towing" but thats kinda the keyword. im so glad they have the 8 speed now only if the 1500 would make it across the board drop the 6 speed

      KX250F SS Diesel is best for trucks because of reliability and torque. But also when it comes to racing. Just look at that Audi R10 TDI and how well it did in LeMans.

    hp is hp, regardless of torque, even with trailers, the gas engine will win because the gas engine can do more work, the diesel will just do it more efficiently.

    OK 0-60 gas vs diesel of course the gas is gonna win. Try racing a full mile uphill and it would be a different story I bet. I know a guy that always bragged about his f250 v-10 and me and my boss met him up this big hill with my boss's 6.0 powerstroke and at first the v-10 was winning but half way up the hill we were pulling away from him fast.
    Gas vs diesel is just not even worth it they are such different engines it all depends what terrain and distance you are racing.
