Is the Engine Access big enough? // Catamaran Project Build Ep254
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2025
- You just can't have a big enough engine room and on building this Catamaran, I have made sure that when things get sticky and I need good access to the Yanmar 4jh57 Engines, I can get to every component without having to be a contortionist. So many jobs in the air this week as we forge ahead with the electrical install and secure the major structure of the stern of the Cat.

Who needs yoga when your folding yourself into spaces like that? You are doing a great job mate.
Good onya Steve.
Your blessed bigtime to have zack on board. He's been a monumental help to get this electrical project off the ground and taken care of.
Following the tradition of men working together, you are having a fantastic experience bonding with your new son in law! A beautiful thing to see and ones to keep in the memory jar forever!
Is green, this has been one of those extremely rewarding g periods of getting to know a young bloke that just never gives in and is so resourceful.Love him.Rossco
BIG thumbs up for Zac ..a knight in shining armor .well done guys
He is such a champion Bob.Love him. Thanks for taking the time to watch oir videos.
Damn, that’s just about as hard as building the boat...boat yoga plus figuring it all out and mounting the things, sheesh. I laughed so hard when you were talking about naughty hands messing with your helm wires, like stuffing a bag in there! It’s looking damn amazing though!!!
Thanks Nena Ml.I reckon a lot of boat systems have been taken out by a careless jamming of an item in a wiring cabinet.Cheers Ross.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going!.....lol
Before you know it, you'll be cruising around the world! Great Job!
✌🤠👌🇺🇸
Wow, you turn Janet into a composite technician? Touché Roscoe!
How good is Janet's skill So good.
@@LifeOnTheHulls looks to be very good. You two will enjoy the fruits of your labors. A great sense of accomplishment as well.
One thing I would do is glass in some kind of attachment to the ceiling directly above the engine for a chain hoist to make engine removal and installation easy. Maybe even attachments for a track that can be removed for a trolley and hoist.
Lights, please buy led strip lights 4-5 feet long and use them in every workspace.
They are super light and give brilliant shadow free illumination.
You could fit them to any surface .
Fiddling around with tiny lamps is just crazy.
Robin
8.13 pm in the uk, I wait all night for this. Vodka and orange, keep it up m8, your a legend 😊😊😊😊
Enjoy that drink buddy.Bit early for me at 713am.But I guess it's 813pm somewhere in the world. You might need it to numb the pain I went through on this week's video.Cheers Rossco
@Life On The Hulls Rossco, I live for you vids bud, wish you and all your 9.30pm here, stay safe, Thursday night is rosscoe night, can't to see the watch the cat get wet. All the best from the UK bud.
Hello Ross! It also may be a good idea to consider using studs and mounting plates for attaching things like pumps and electrical components. You can mount them to the plate externally and then attach the plate to the studs in the boat wall with just nuts and washers etc. Helps with cooling and such and this way, If you ever have to replace the part, you can just make a new plate or drill the existing one. You also don't have to try to drill new holes and fasteners in the tight spaces!
Catching up and seeing this a week late. Be thankful you're not working in the -26C that it is here today.
Another riviting episode of life on the hulls. Finally.
Ross, while your putting in your macerator pump you may want to look at a shutoff from the Black water tank to the macerator pump and a shutoff from a line coming from your gray water tank to a wye and then into the macerator pump. That way if you need to flush your macerator pump to work on it you can use the gray water to help clean it out before you dismantle it. Keep up the good work.
Good work
Cheers mate
G'day Ross, the amount of hard work gone into this build is incredible! I will be watching until the end mate
Thanks Matty,appreciate you watching mate.Rossco
Great episode Ross looking good mate
Thanks buddy.
Good to see Zack back, he does awesome work!
We agree!I was very happy to see him back.
Getting better all the time !
Thanks Whitney.
It looks like you have the Yanmar 4JH4 family engines. The impeller on them are in an awkward location, hard to hold the cover o-ring in place while putting it back together.
I also noticed the bed has a lot of flex in it now that you made the engine access. May want to think about re-enforcing.
Don’t forget to put a light in that electrical cupboard. That’ll probably rarely be used but when you do use it. It’ll be real handy.
Thanks,we have a 2 mtr 12 volt led cob strip in the roof of the cabinet. Is perfect and dpes does not cast a shadow.Cheers Rossco
Keeping on and keeping on Roscoe😀👍
So impressed with how she's coming along, it's a true credit to all your hard work!
Thanks Ben.Taking a great deal of time.
LOOKING GOOD!!!
Hey, nice Bose Colour BT speaker there! 😁
I love our Bose speaker Dave, was a gift from a good friend.
Very Nice as always Ross
Greate idear with the engine acces, always nice to have easy acces to the engines.
Have a greate weekend.
All the best.
Progressing towards the finish Ross.
Narelle and Mark called to see me and enquired about what you were doing since school days
I told them to watch the Hulls and see what has been going on since then
So delighted especially after you loved that old bean bag you shared with Max
And didn’t even like mowing lawns
They sent congratulations and best wishes for sailing days ahead
That is so funny mum. Great to see you keeping up with the workload.
For the hard to drill spots, get yourself a flexible drive then it will be able to bend into those tight spots you cannot get your drill in to.
sometimes it seems like you have to go back 2 steps to more one giant step forward. Have a great week.. TTFN
In the area that has limited space why not f/g some studs in that way you just need spanner room to do them up. :)
All your hard work is now coming together, fantastic
Cheers Mike
Thanks Rosco
My pleasure mate,thanks for watching.
The heat is on. Making adjustments to fit devices that are reasonably accessible for wiring, plumbing, serviving and replacement.
Great progress!
If you search for "Right Angle drill Extension" you should be able to find something to help with those tricky to access mounting plates. Stay safe out there.
Continuing to do fantastic work and you are still my hero of boat building...
Aww thanks Doug.
If it's about crawling over the engine, then you could make mountings left and right of it to allow you to put a board. Then you could get in the back easily, regardless of how hot the engine is.
Great work guys. Brilliant access to the engines I’ll work in there whenever you want.
You've got a job Jeffrey,.
Well, I don’t think I ever herd you say it was going to be easy. That being said you’re doing a fantastic job. It’s nice to see the young lad helping you out. I know what that’s like. My company relied on the younger population and the good ones where great, the not so good didn’t last to long. I really miss that the most now that I’m retired however they do tend to pop in every now and then.
Another epic episode of head down bum up👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 you guys keep rocking all the little things out and she will be locked up in no time. Lucky plumbing is simple🤣🤣
I hope the plumbing us simple, but I am trying not to think about yet.
Ross I'm not sure what they call them but I've seen them on some other channels, it's some kind of head that you put on your drill where you can drill in very tight spaces like in that hole you need to find out what it is and get one lol
Isn't the black water pump going to be blocked in case when it's getting older and sticky stuff remains in there? I mean isn't the vertical position meant to be better for this?
We use ppaallet systems on aircraft to reduce maintenance access issues with quick disconnects for plumbing and electrical
for tight angle drills you could use a 3/8 electric wrench, they come in various sizes, I noticed that either some areas are getting smaller on your boat or you are getting bigger, great vlogs by the way, really enjoy the trip. many thanks stay safe and well regards John
Nice video Ross
I have been following this build since it was just a mould. I wish I had the tenacity to do a project this big but hell I can’t even get my rock crawler Toyota finished 😂😂😂😂
I just go to work and start with a little job, usually turns into a massive one.You will get it done Martin.
It will all be worth it.
I certainly hope so.
You mentioned sealing the engine compartments for noise etc. Have you given any thought to the fact the engine needs fresh air to operate? External vent to let air in.
I have a beautiful vetus stainless engine room vent suited to the horsepower that will be mounted just below the gunnel and has a Dorade attachment to prevent water coming in.We will also have an in line engine blower fan.Cheers Rossco
And it continues. Have you a projected launch date?
To set a launch date would potentially create some serious stress.Working on some time year Kaisu.Cheers Ross.
Make a pallet system to install hard to get to installations of pumps
Coild you elaborate on what that would entail. Are they clips with disconnect.Ross
It's going to be hard to work on the engine in that small space.
Nice wiring diagram, what program did you use ?
Wouldn't it be amazing to have the door frame integrated into the ceiling so that you didn't have to bend your head every time you went through.
It’s never big enough! Some marine engine manufacturers do publish the desired space for the engine installation to allow for service.
Too bad you cant have a master disconnect for lightning strikes.
holy poo dont wanna spoil everyones BBQ oh mate i laughed and laughed
Excellent Aaron.First one to comment on that.Ross
Boy, will you regret not having gravity-feed tanks, first white mouse will block that pump.
I will be training my crew and the first one that's gets stuck it will be a family affair to clean it out.My family understand boat plumbing. All will be good until the first one .
@@LifeOnTheHulls I have had a Dufour sailing boat for 10 years now, gravity tank, no electrics, no wiring, no motor, no smell, and silent running, it just sits in a cupboard like a box of dumb Frogs. At sea leave the drain valve open, in port/anchor, close the valve. Once a year I give it a good rinse. Happy family.
Darn it I thought I'd be the first comment😂😂
You'd have to get up early to beat some of these guys. Thanks for watching in any case Mike. Rossco
