In this video, DIYNate shows three great fixes for handling a clogged kitchen sink that has a garbage disposal attached. Your issue could be that your disposal is not working and the blades are stuck, or it could be a more serious stoppage, so this quick video gives you how to approach three of the most common issues, before going further and needing to call a plumber. Hopefully, this quick video saves you some time and money, and also builds your "handy confidence" with a pretty easy repair.
Of course, the first step is to see if you have a foreign object (fork, large piece of debris) clogging or jamming the disposer. If you can remove it from the top side, that is pretty straight forward. Of course, be very careful if using your hands and do not turn it on while trying to extract the object. Be careful warning and disclaimer!
Three steps are outlined as follows:
1. Test the turning rotors of the garbage disposal by using a 1/4 inch allen wrench / hex key (or Jam Buster) from the bottom side. Sometimes there is a reset button at the bottom that can help to retrigger as well.
2. CAREFULLY, use a plunger (typically used for toilets) to create some pressure to force the debris that is in the pipes coming out of the disposer through. Note, there are several cautions with this approach including not using too much pressure / force due to "under-sink" style sinks typically being mounted to the countertop. Other issues can be caused from this approach with too much pressure including creating a separation between the sink and disposer or even causing fittings to fatigue or give out (less likely but still, just be very careful) - again, warning and disclaimer.
3. If those two approaches fail, you will likely need to take apart one or multiple of the fittings coming from the garbage disposal to see where the clog is occurring. It is always good to have a pan or bucket underneath to catch the water / debris that will come out. This approach involves separating the pipes and then clearing them out (depending on your setup) and putting them back together and testing for leaks. This video doesn't go into too much detail on that, but the general concept / idea are discussed.
If you are looking for other solutions, if you have a shop vac, that can also be a handy way to extract the water and even get some of the debris to come out from the top side.
Using the 1/4" allen wrench can also be really helpful for unsticking twisted items like washcloths or other materials that may have wrapped around the garbage disposal blades.
DIYNate's model of garbage disposal is a Badger, and this also works on other types / models, such as InSinkErator, etc.
This fix is a common one that many people have to encounter and often will call a handyman or plumber to resolve, so ideally, you will be able to clear your jam or stoppage and save some time, money, and aggravation!

+ what can I use to unstop my kitchen double sink using baking soda
😢😮q
My question is, as you begin to demonstrate the hex key solution in the video, if my garbage disposal appears to be functioning okay, that is to say it's rotating, making its usual noise, and seems like it is trying to pull the water through, but none is draining away, would that indicate that the clog lies in the plumbing past the garbage disposal, and not in the garbage disposal itself? When the garbage disposal is clogged is the mechanism jammed, and the motor sounds like it is struggling to rotate the device, or what does a clogged garbage disposal sound? What are the indicators that the clog exists within the garbage disposal?
Just tried the plunger method as my husband didn't want me messing with anything down below and screwing it up worse (although I think with your guidance I would've been fine 😉). Tried the plunger method, about 4 tries since I was being extra careful like you explained, and it cleared it right up! All while my husband was sitting on the couch reading what to do! I said, "already fixed it!" Thanks to you!!!
Hey Jennifer - this is great! Put a smile on my face reading it - congrats on the fix and nice work getting it done in a hurry! Thanks for your comment and for watching - glad I could help!

THANK YOU!! My father died in 2016, and I don't have anyone to ask anymore. SO thank you for this, I don't feel like a fool. I knew the answer but wanted to be sure. Using the plunger helped and your guidance to not go to hard on it would have been the advice my father would have given, that I may not have remembered. I just so appreciate you so much right now.
Hey there - thanks for letting me know, Laura! Sounds like your father was a wise and helpful man - glad to have assisted and hope all went well with the fix! Appreciate your comment and it put a smile on my face!

@@dipndots1560 I am so sorry for your loss. It does make a difference when you go to ask a questions and they;'re not there anymore. Omg !!! THANK YOU !! I’m 36 years old and this has made my apartment so rank this easy fix made me feel so silly omg !!! I feel like the real man of the house !!! Another cool reason my kids are calling me a super hero !! NO MORE PAPER PLATES, bowls and plastic wear for real meals !!! !! I was so tired of waiting for maintenance to come fix something so easy THANK U SO MUCH NATE!! My dishwasher was out of commission because of my garbage disposal I literally had to scoop out the nasty sink water from the dishwasher and dump it into the toilet which took at least an hour after washing dishes thank you so much you save me so much time as a father walking past your kids over and over again for hour and 15 minutes while they just wanna play with you it’s kind of irritating when you have daughters that just want to be with there daddy!! NATE YOU FREAKING ROCK !! MY HERO !! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!! Legit saved me TIME AND MONEY !!
Chris - thanks so much for your comment - you really made my day when I read it and sorry it took me a little while to respond. That is great to hear the sink fix worked for you and when you shared the context, I can only imagine the frustration of waiting on maintenance to come handle something and having to manually remove sink water while waiting for a fix. Great job for you on taking the initiative to look up a solution online and take matters into your own hands and get it resolved! A lot of people don't realize how great RUclips, Google, etc. are for self-help and so many problems are a lot easier to fix than they seem when you find the right video or article to solve.
Again, great to hear my video helped you out and love hearing it saved you time and money and gave you more time with your kids, my man! God bless back at you and best wishes!

I’m also 36 and relate to everything you said aside from the children. Congrats on your blessings 🙏
Great tips. Just cleared a disposal clog with one pump on my plunger, can't believe I didn't think of that before. 😁 Had it clogged once before and took apart the whole pipe assembly. Much easier, to say the least! Thank ya sir.
Appreciate the feedback - glad to hear it worked for you! The plunger is a surprisingly simple fix compared to taking the fittings off. Thanks for the comment!

THANK YOU NATE!!! The clog occurred the day before Thanksgiving around 3:00pm. I used Drano Max and left for a few hours. Got back at 6:00pm, no change. After about 4 plunges, I ran the disposal, no more clog. You saved Thanksgiving!!! 😂

@@DIYNate You are more than welcome!
The plunger worked for me almost immediately - I don't understand *how* it works, but it did the job and saved me a big bill and a week of eating off paper plates while waiting for the plumber to come out. Thank you!!
Great to hear - happy to hear it saved some money and paper plates! Basically, some stuff gets clogged in the drain pipe and the pressure from the plunger unsticks the jam and pushes it further down and separates so it can get through to the sewer. Hope that helps and thanks for your comment!
- DIYNate
The plunger method worked for me also! Thanks!
Tip - Just be sure to place a cup over your dishwashers overflow valve located at the top of the sink, near the faucet. Otherwise, you may get splashed when you plunge the blockage.
Glad to hear it worked for you and good point on the overflow valve. Don’t thin my sink has one of those, but for those that do, seems like that would help!
Thanks for the comment! - DIYNate
Bless you! ☺️ The plunger worked. It’s the weekend and I did not want to pay overtime. 😅
Yeah, shoulda read your tip… just splashed dirty water everywhere… at least we both laughed about it

Plunger method helped me! Thank you sir!
Excellent - glad to hear it helped and thanks for letting me know, Jesus!
I had tried using a toilet plunger before watching your video but was unsuccessful and thought maybe I should use a sink plunger (which I didn't have) instead of a toilet plunger. I was concerned about damaging my disposal. I made an appointment with a plumber but would have to wait until Monday and wouldn't have a working sink all weekend. After watching your video, I decided to try again with the toilet plunger. This time I got on a ladder as I'm short and not very strong. Being above the sink gave me the leverage I needed and I was able to unclog my drain quickly. I had a working sink on a Friday night and saved myself a plumber bill and not having the use of my sink all weekend. Thank you!
Hey Pam - great to hear you got the clog cleared with the plunger method and sounds like you had an interesting adjustment to the approach with the ladder! Glad to have helped and love hearing people say that it saved a plumber bill and a frustrating weekend! Appreciate your comment - great context!

Hi Nate I tried the plunger method for the second time and just like the 1st time it works! Thanks Nate for this video. There’s just one thing I would recommend is make sure you put the drain stopper in the other side of the sink.
Thanks Trina - glad to hear the plunger method has now had a second successful run! Good call on stopping the other side as well - thanks for the mention there!

Thank you for the tip. Had to plunge several times as it would not clear. It came up the other sink. Finally ran disposal and plunged the other side and with a prayer or two and it was clear. Awesome.
Glad to hear the plunger got you clear, Debra! Sometimes the other side of the sink will let some air / water out so stopping that side up can help with the compression. Sounds like you got it solved and glad you are back up and running. Thanks for letting me know!

HI Nate - I'm still working on it. You already saved me some grief because I was eyeing the disposal and how to take the whole thing down. I remember installing this new one a while back and it was heavy as concrete, quite hard to hold in place and tighten alone. I'm reasonably sure I have a clog inside the disposal, probably in the teeth that grind stuff up. The motor sounds locked up and is not turning like it should sound. I'm taking a break at the moment as I am partially handicapped. So I am resting and reading RUclips. Your post was the first one I found and it looks like it covers all the bases. i just need to put it "to work." I will get back to you, hopefully with good news in a while.
Good luck, John! I hope you are able to get it working again and definitely appreciate your comment!

Oh Nate thank you so much for sharing the plunger tip!! Just one gentle pump, and it worked like a charm 😭 I was in a mini panic mode the night before going on a 4 day out of town trip, not wanting to dissemble the pipes but also not wanting to come back to a stinky apartment!! Thanks so much for the tips. I had already tried using the plunger but water was still standing in the sink even though it had gone down some. The one thing I didn't do was turn on the disposal after using the plunger. That took care of everything. This was a great help.
Excellent, Vicki - great to hear it worked for you! Really appreciate your comment!

AWESOME! I’m tired of waiting for my husband to fix our sink! Thanks so much!!!
Haha - I can understand that as usually the husband who takes a little too long on my projects. Glad it helped and thanks for the comment!

Had a very slow drain and after adding liquid plumber, waiting for 30 minutes and running hot water it actually was worse with complete standing water. I saw your video and the step with the plunger cleared it right up. Thank you. Any thoughts on why the liquid plumber did work but the plunger immediately did?
Hello Mario - tough to say on Liquid Plumber for sure, but think of it as a solvent (has to take time to dissolve whatever is down there). If there was a thick block, it may have been trying to dissolve a large amount of stuff which could be a slow process. By comparison, the plunger method uses pressure from the top and pushes water against the blockage to force that stuff past the stopped up area. So it likely released the large blockage and got it past the area where things got clogged. That is my best assessment and glad to hear it worked out for you! Thanks for the comment! - DIYNate
Thank you so much for these easy instructions !!!my husband is working out of state and I am here alone trying to figure this out and it worked like a charm the plunger save me a plumber visit 😊

Hi Nate I just did the plunger step 5mins ago and it worked! Thank you for doing this video because it saved me a plumber bill. The only thing I would’ve liked you to add to the video is putting the strainer in the other side of the sink so the water from the disposal wouldn’t come back up as we’re plunging the disposal side. Oh Wow! You just saved me $200+ hours Nathan. Thank you so much. I had a clogged disposal and it was making all sorts of noise. There was a mess in the sink. The water was rising instead of draining and all of a sudden, the blade stopped spinning and I thought for sure it was gone. I started pricing new machines and thought, let me see if I can install it myself to save money. So I jumped on RUclips and after watching one video, I got overwhelmed, but your video was next in line and thought what the hey, let me see what Nate has to say, Never would of thought to plunge it because I thought that the mechanism was setup to bypass the pipes directly and that I would possibly damage the disposal. I took your instruction to plunge lightly and it took a few tries because I was not strong enough to push the plunger down. Once I did a side push, the plunger went down and I had to plug the other drain because all the air was going out of it and not down the pipe. Once plugged, I can hear that the water was being forced down and so did the clog. Thank you! Thank you! and Thank you!
