PLUMBERS TRICK: To save you all the trouble of pulling the pipes apart in the future (for this exact problem)....In the beginning of the video when you had both sides of the sink full and turned on your disposal, if you had put the plug in the side that did not have the disposal on it and held it in tightly so it didn't pop up from the pressure, the disposal would act as a water pump and push the blockage right out. You saw how it filled the other side of the sink when you turned on the disposal. Same thing will happen but while holding down that sink plug it will make the pump push the water past the clog. You may have to do this a few times before it blows everything clear but it works every time. If it wont blow it open then chances are the clog is so deep in the pipe that a snake needs to be used. When you try this method the side of the sink with the disposal needs to be half full of water. The disposal will then pump that water into the lines under pressure. BEWARE that when you shut off the disposal to quickly hold your hand slightly over the disposal drain because if it didn't clear the clog water may shoot back up suddenly. Like I said it may take a few times to get it open depends how tight the clog is. Great video for home owners!!!

Rob!!!!! Omg thank you for the tip...hopped on RUclips (bc you can find ANYTHING on here, what did we do before RUclips and Google?!?!) bc my kitchen sink got clogged on the side of the garbage disposal and was backing up water while my dishwasher was running!!!! Yikes. Happened on this vid and saw your trick posted! Took all of 5sec to fix it, would have cost me at least $100 for a plumber to come out! Your awesome.....bravo!

Mr Rob - You're The Man! Used your Plumber's Trick on my clogged kitchen sink this morning. It worked the 1st time just like you said. Both sides were so full of gunk I had to bail into a bucket almost all the left-side to put the plug in and half the disposal side. Held down hard on the plug, flipped the switch and PRESTO problem solved. I am truly grateful I took the time to read some replies and came across your post. THANK-YOU! :)

I cant begin to tell you how grateful i am for this advice Rob.
I spent the some of the day taking apart all of the pipes under the sink and even using draino, which didn't work.
I was on the cusp of going to buy a drain snake, but the store closed 10 mins before I could leave, so i started watching drain videos
I see your comment, give it a go.. .and voila!!! the pipes actually drain water now.
Thanks Rob, 8 years later and still a legend ;)

Six year old video and still works like a charm. My mother decided to dump a whole Chinese buffet in our poor old garbage disposal, only to clog our pipes. I watched this video and took out the pipe farthest back. All those leftovers that were still well good enough to eat came plunging out. This video is a lifesaver! Thanks so much 😀

WOW!! Rob, thank God, you, the internet and You Tube for saving me countless frustration and cost!!! I first tried salt, hot water, vinegar, Dawn and lastly plunging in various combinations. Nothing worked. I tried simply holding the stopper in the drain without the disposal, and running the disposal as instructed. The drain cleared!! Praise God! Now we can wash baby bottles in the kitchen!!
    Thank you, thank you.

Am SO grateful. 73 year old widow. Sinks looked just like this. I’d already hauled 4 gallons of water from these sinks and decided to check RUclips while resting.
It took all my strength to hold that black piece down(once I found it) and five tries with the garbage disposer running but I am clog free without having to wrestle with pipes or call for help. 🎉❤ there are no thanks great enough.

Couple of tips when you install the plumbing, run the water very hot for a couple minute after you tighten the compression nuts. Then re tighten them, this heat them up a allow an extra half turn or so. Also you can wrap some paper towels around all of the joints then let the water run for while, if you have a slow leak you will be able to tell exactly when it's coming from before you discover it days later when the bottom of your cabinet is soaked.

My husband and I tried this method once before, but because of where we live, plus it's a very old house, the water gushed out and spilled EVERYWHERE even though we had a bucket underneath it, and the water was black. I'd do this as a last resort.
So what we did instead that worked: I put on gloves and pressed down on the sink stopper as HARD as I possibly could, (since it was completely submerged) while he plunged the other side where the garbage disposal is, then just ran it, and since I was pressing down to prevent any water going back up on my side (which was easier said than done, so much pressure, I had to hold it down using all the strength I could muster) The water eventually went down, and pushed the air bubble through, and it drained correctly again.
But in the future, I run the garbage disposal with hot water for a few seconds before putting any food down there. Foods I realize you should avoid:
Rice (NEVER put any rice down there) potato skins, mushroom stems, oil and anything else extremely thick like stew leftovers, etc. I just strain the food, and pour it in a grocery bag, seal it up and put it in the trash, and take out the trash not long after. Hope this helps for others!
Update: we STOPPED using the garbage disposal and use a sink stopper. Everything goes in the trash. Our plumbing can’t handle anything but liquid.

@@Morgan-yl4uk yeah, it’s pretty nasty. Like sewage and dirty water. Not poop, thankfully, but it’s not pleasant.
We actually stopped using our garbage disposal. Everything solid goes into the trash.

Hi, my sink looks and behaves EXACTLY like yours. I followed all the steps but there was no blockage in any of the parts of pipe discussed in the video. However, after I put everything back together and ran water threw it both sinks began to fill up again as before. I guess the only place the blockage could be is farther back towards the wall of the sink. I could not disconnect any more of the piping heading farther toward the back of the sink due to the previous homeowner epoxying the joint together - however as far back as I could see looked clear. Do you think our blockage is even farther back? It does take a while for the sinks to fill up again when I have the water running on a medium speed. I'm thinking we will have to call a plumber but any tips/advice you could give would be most appreciated!
By the way, great video, very clear, it made me feel confident to try and tackle my first ever plumbing problem as a new homeowner :)

For P-traps you can use almost any drain snake to clean the pipe. Just google Drain Snake or Pipe Snake. There are a number that are under $10 that could help clean out a P-trap. You would likely need a more expensive, longer one to clean out deeper clogs.

Love the HowToWith Geo. I clogged my kitchen sink with carrots from juicing. Without thinking I thru the mulch in the sink, and switched on the garbage disposal. My friend was standing next to me when I was doing this, as sink clogging up, and telling my friend.."I do it all the time", friend replied "that much? your going to stop up your sink". In the moment she said this the sink was clogged. Finding the clog was easy in the pipes, and the whole thing had only taken under 20 minutes. Last night I was a wreck; worry, calling my landlord, time it takes to fix, and how bad can it be?? The weight was lifted. THANK YOU!

Exactly what was wrong with my sink, and 100% fixed it!!! Took about 30-45min start to finish. My 2cents is that more water will come out than appears. Thankfully I had some back up vessels nearby. Also, turn off dishwasher, LOL! Cheers!!!
