I want to hear videos I told you that it would be very lucrative of being a collection in garbage collection or clean up.
literally 0 videos ever cover setting up the business. surely he had to talk to the town / state to et up a business. taxes? how did he set up his bank? did he do self employment? llc? license to drive the truck? it's not just buy a truck and trash cans anymore. it's 100000 hoops you have to jump through. I want to start business / sell ideas to companies but it feels impossible to even think about doing it.

This guy is the definition of not having the knowledge but having the will and taking a chance. He took the chance and came out on top. Good for him.
I think it required more than just that. He also had the ability to come up to speed fast on things. Plus, he already seemed to have a lot of knowledge on the business aspect. It's easier to learn how to drive that truck than it is to learn what truck is best to get, how to finance it, etc.
Yes, but its a bit premature for a 15 day old business. A lot can happen in any business over the months and certainly over the years....hence the reason the success rate of a business is less than 5% reaching 5 years.

@@woozy607 Like most businesses I think it comes down to competition. In my city he would have to compete against the city itself. That is hard to do when every time someone moves here they don't even need to do anything but check a box to get city pickup. I even specifically told the city I was going with a private contractor and the city still signed me up with city pickups. I had to go through a bunch of red tape to get the charges removed, etc.
Btw, the contractor I went with has to deal with having only 1 to 2 pickups per block, if that. Yeah, that adds up to a lot of customers but they have to drive all over the place. The guy in the video has the opposite situation. Like we see in that one clip where the competition had that one sucky pickup where they had to then back out.
Spencer is a neighbor. we switched to Lone Star shortly after he started. Barnes was a great company. unfortunately , Cards is not! We have been very pleased with Lone Star. Thank you Spencer for saving the neighborhood from Cards!
My dividend journey began when I realized that two particular expenses in my budget were always going to go up and never go down. The two expenses were taxes and insurance. I realized that the dramatic rise in both will need some added income. So, I started buying shares paying dividends. I can now see that this will be the path I need to take to make sure those two expenses will not overtake my future income.
As a beginner, educate yourself, Learn the basics of investing and the stock market. There are many resources available online, including books, articles, and online courses. It’s a good idea to diversify your portfolio across different stocks and sectors to minimize risk. I’ve heard of people accruing over $550k during recessions and inflation, its important to do your own research.
A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850K.

I completely agree with you! My first 100k took a long time and wasn't that special to be honest with you. Once I hit 300K that is the game changer in my opinion. At this point my money is basically making me a pretty good yearly salary. When I go to sleep at night I know my money is making decent money with the help of my FA!

This is awesome. As someone who worked as a tech for Waste management you are going to go tires a lot especially if you drive the truck into the land fill instead of a tipping area. Also you need to find a mechanic who has waste experience or get really good at turning wrenches yourself. I hope you have a few down days that you can go over and work on the truck. Make sure you keep up on maintenance otherwise it will show its ugly head one way or another.

As a mechanic/business owner I agree with this 100%, learn to change your own tires, brakes, service & simple fixes will save you a ton. Also keep it clean & be careful around it, sounds dumb but I did a head gasket on a trash truck & had a really small cut & got MRSA from it.

Buy and hold is risky because no one knows what the market will be like in the future so it's better to invest rather than buy and hold because in the process of buy/hold you can loss everything when the price falls against your expectations

A person needs to buy the truck, you have to note, in some areas such as where I live, (non-HOA) but garbage bill is funneled into my local water bill. Then garbage trucks are notoriously needy for repairs and maintenance. Then you have to pay to dump in your local garbage fill. Then Gas isn’t cheap nor free, then tires at least 1x per year gotta be changed, this business is a perfect example of right place right time to start
The trash pickup is in our property taxes here, even harder to get around.
Yep. Many counties have monopolized this and you can't pick up or dump without county approval. Not a business than can be started in majority of US counties.
Yeah, I think most starting out in this business would have a much harder time. He was smart though and didn't consider doing it until the only other garbage company in the area started messing over their customers with ridiculous fees. Instead of him begging people to sign up with him he had them begging him. That gave him that initial revenue that I suspect most new businesses struggle with.
And monthly storage fee for the trucks. They will need constant maintance for sure. Can certainly make it work but he has been in business for 15 days. Time will tell.
We've been doing junk removal in south east Florida since 2021. It's a great business to be in! Great thing about trash/junk is that everyone has it and will always need it to some degree.

@clutterreductionjunkremoval When you pick up junk, you have to take it somewhere. They probably charge a fee associated with it correct? How much is the fee or how do you bake that into your pricing?
@@Docsamadhi disposal at transfer stations/landfill charge by weight. Varies by state to state. Trash, debris, and vegetation are the different categories. Pricing includes a mix of disposal, operation expenses, labor up to a certain time limit, and profit.
Not me. I live in the country and burn all my trash, then take the metal to recycling center. I drove a truck for a garbage business once, until I found out the company was charging a separate fee for customers who recycled, yet that truck got dumped in the same landfill as the rest of garbage. It was a scam.
And for those who think burning plastic is dangerous... the landfills burn off the gas every that the trash produces underground, while leaving the rest to penatrate our soil and water. Which do you think sounds more dangerous?
He basically picked up work and revenue these big company deemed too much trouble and wasted time. This is an excellent example of a great business, I am jealous. Perfect showcase for Codie's channel.

How long did it take to get that license?
I did not have my pilot's license before age 38. I went to a accelerated flight training school. Got all 9 rating's in 10 months.

Apparently, he wanted to pursue a different industry and a different challenge... and I have incredible respect for that.

@@eddiemalvin As a 10 year badged IT guy, I can tell you that while I'm pulling 6 figures, hitting 300k is not at all easy. Also, you're more likely to only find such salaries in higher cost of living states and with big companies like Netflix, Google, Amazon, etc. And even then, only the cream of the crop are even getting interviews there, let alone getting hired. Even more, it depends on what branch of IT you're in. Generally, you're only going to getting over 200k if you are a senior architect or security guru.
This guy is solid. I give it to him. To be honest, I don't think I’d have the physical strength for this. I put in 20k into various assets last year and flipped into six figures within a few months and still going. I’ve always been an advocate of investing because it has been rather rewarding. I hope to attain financial freedom soon. One more thing, I always look forward to your content Codie, keep up the good work.

I work for a leading field service management SaaS company (rolling suds is one of my clients) and the largest churn rate - due to closing business - is junk removal businesses. Appealing due to the low barrier to entry and low skills required. BUT some of them are making 6 figures. You just have to be a bit better than the rest.

This dude won in every risk along the way… every step. Great for him for sure! No one else will be as lucky and will have a ton more challenges. What a great business and story. He’s done so well.

To me he did not have as much risk. He had ppl sign up with a realistic number of participants. Then they paid into it before the service even started. He got his clientele and made it happen. Most ppl start a business and assume everyone will like what service or product without testing it first. He tested it and first made sure there was demand before he supplied, which is really what a good business should do.
I wouldn't call any of that luck and you only seen the problem and the outcome of each situation and nothing in between. That is why everything always looks easy or lucky from those who have never owned and ran a successful business. You only see "needs trash cash...obtains trash cans" - lucky. You didn't see that he called 138 different places and spent three days straight on the phone looking for trash cans to be delivered in time. Where most people would call 5 places get a "No" and say to themselves, "Whelp, we tried." I've owned three businesses and there is no such thing as luck in business.
I have as well owned multiple businesses and there is some luck involved. I’m not dismissing his hard work. Only saying as he was he had a lot of good luck along the way. Perfect storm every step from the start of the business because of the other one underperforming to lucking into the one man truck. He said himself he would have bought a two man because he didn’t know. He was lucky the one man came up first.

Done by local authority (city councils) here in the UK. Trash collection is taken for granted here, we don't pay for it directly.

Focus on long term investments in property, stocks, and bonds. Avoid copying, daytrading and 'chart astrology'. Diversify across different geographies, industries, and value chain stages - to reduce your risk. You can do this with ETFs, or by selecting different stocks yourself. This is the best way to invest for more than 90% of people
I successfully trade in my own portfolio, and also follow others because I'm interested in their strategies. I realized I've got better at managing the trader's strategies too. There's nothing wrong at all with having someone far more dedicated manage some of your portfolio.

How do you get contracts. The city hires the trash businesses around me I don’t even think you could get a contract with residential
It isn't possible in many counties in the US. Most counties will monopolize utilities like trash pickup for the obvious reason that a low quality company might create major problems in the county.
Hard work, risk, and sacrifice bear fruit. This is a wonderful story of success. This dude is awesome

The problem with the trash business is finding drivers. Our trash and recycle pickups are late almost every week.
20% margin off $150K a year brings your take home of $30K before taxes. That’s not enough to live off of.
@panama-canada margins are calculated after his payroll. The 20% is after he pays himself. Payroll is a cost and eats into profit. He is saying here after he pays himself he has 20% profit or $30k

He’s paying himself $50k in salary. Then profit -$150 (worst case scenario and $500K best case scenario ). 1 day a week, obviously more work than that.

He is also only working 1 day a week even if it was 30k, 1 day a week is amazing

This speaks to me. I teach online and have been making a decent hourly for a few years, but I prefer going out on my non working time and delivering on Uber and DoorDash. I make less but it doesn’t feel like work. Im looking at maps, thinking of optimal directions, scoping which offerer is a good deal or not by pay and where it drops, etc. Practical problem solving and quick decisions are more fun to me. I have been looking into getting a truck or van and thinking of more ways to use it to make money being outside.

The content seemed interesting so i clicked. Loved it. Learned a thing or two. Really like this guys attitude, he is gonna reach places...vision & leadership, not afraid to get his hands dirty. Its that hard working spirit that is gonna help a lot. When workers see their boss doing it, its motivation. I hate it though when ppl say "i don't want my kids to work as hard as i did." That mentality is what crashed the Vanderbilt family (check out their story). Cornelius Vanderbilt was a stern hard working man with a strong work ethic. His sons worked hard as well because of him....they in turn, were easy on their children, not wanting them to be exposed to such "hard work". Such foolish ideologies led to spoilt generations who lacked discipline and strong work ethic...it was the beginning of the end. Its such a blessing when ppl recognise the efforts of parents & previous generations....and build on it. "The wise shall live off the foolish"
I work for granger in michigan, the carts he bought were alchins and less's carts. Both of thoes company's we bought out. I always wondered what happened with all the old companies carts we switched out for granger carts.

Spencer! more revenue for you with current customers! Since you have a few days off during the week, offer your customers a small additional fee to have a once a month heavy trash pick up. My local service offers this in my town. Also they will pick up our yard waste and clippings on a weekly basis during the summer months where I live. People will pay for a good service!! I used to own an HVAC company. I bought many U-Haul style box trucks from the USPS and converted them into installation trucks. I got a 24 ft box truck with like 30K miles for $2500 or maybe $4000 from a US Gov auction. I simply paid a local mechanic, I think it was $120 or $140 to go do a vehicle inspection and test drive of it. Then flew out to CA to drive it back to AZ. I often spent more on the installation of hydraulics lifts and the company logo wraps than I did the trucks.

Pay attention to the comment from the guy who says he was a Waste management tech. Truck maintenance and repairs are the potential nightmares. That truck will be great until the day sometime breaks and you don't know how to fix it and can't find someone that can. You wind up pulling a trailer since just to keep your customers while you try and figure out how to get it fixed. But trying to be negative just saying plan for it and find someone that really knows the truck or figure out how to train yourself. I had a street sweeping business, as part of a parking lot sweeping company. Really expensive truck, really expensive repairs, hard finding someone to trust driving it. But i always said to myself if it was easy they wouldn't pay us as much as they do. Never had less than 100k cashflow after the first year. Very much liked the idea that we got a customer and they stayed for years some even stayed the whole time we owned the company.
Yup. Truck maintenance these days is crazy pricey, all the parts have 3x in price in last several years. Hourly shop labor rates way up. Few small repairs and easily wipe out all profit for the month of running the truck. Finding quality drivers helps, but also huge challenge.
