As a twenty-year trucking veteran, and 2.5 million miles, I’ll say it right here--trucking is a cut-throat business. You’re chances of being lied to if you start a trucking company is nearly 100%. Shippers and trucking companies will tell you a million lies to get you through the door, but then once you start hauling for them, the reality is uncovered. Expect to make 70% as much as they told you you’d make. Also, expect to work 10 more hours per week than they promised. Too much government control and regulations. To make good money, you will need 3-4 trucks running. If you can’t afford this, the only other answer is to buy your own truck and go out on the road. Consider trucking to be like a college education. There are no books that will tell you how to do it, and other owner operators are hesitant to help you since you will be their competition. If you're looking into starting your own trucking company this 2023 then I will recommend you look into getting a Governmental business grant. I drive for Old Dominion Freight Line . Things are not actually flowing well in my division, so I thought it time to get my own trucking business into Operation. I came across your channel two months ago after I have applied for SBA loan multiple times myself to get a new truck and start my business but my application was denied. I decided to pay and hire a Financial Loan/ Grant Agent that help me look out for the best Trucking Business Grant program that suite my business and credit score. I'm very happy to inform you that after Four weeks of application process with the grant agent. I have finally been approved for $187,000 Business Grant. I will be able to get all my business equipments and a 2019 Freightliner T12664ST Sleeper Tractor this January and my business will start it's operation fully. Thank you so much your videos keep my motivation alive.

@@johnn251 thats just it the income with trucks today seldom exceeds the expenses. I bought my first truck in 1979 trucked with my own until 2004. The last 13 yrs my average gross income was 380 thousand/yr. My last full yr fuel Bill was 32 thousand. Today most average 200 and spend over 100 on fuel alone. I still own my truck but it is parked for sale and I am going to retire from my company drivers job. I have had enough. Good luck to all have a great weekend

After "putting in my time" as a driver, I finally got into a dump truck after moving out of Washington, and back to my home state of Idaho. Loving life as Dump Truck driver in a "super dump" with a 4 axle pup. Keep that rubber side down, lass. You've done good.

@@loveyoubetrue111I'm from Houston as well! I'm not a driver but I have some suggestions which might help. If you're comfortable with this, you could follow a dump truck you find on the road to their site and ask be transparent and them. If that is too creepy, call trucks you see on the road, or exchange contacts with drivers at gas stations. You could also talk to the dirt or crushed concrete yards you drive by off i10, 45, or 59/69. Best of luck!

I've had my A C for about 15 years I've been driving steady ever since, best piece of advice I can give you as an owner operator of course keep your cost down, switch out the transmission and rear axle fluid to top of the line synthetics it will help your bottom line out over the long haul. Great! Trucking gives one a certain amount of independence. Keep your driving record good and you can go where you want. I did it for 40 years and never regretted it. ALWAYS had a job and always paid the bills with plenty left over!
@@johnhanek16740 years, holy cow! im giving it up after 23 years. it was a dream during covid when no one was on the road but us trucks. when people came back on the road it was like they forgot how to drive, and its like everyone now depends on you to keep them safe. the past two years have been the worst in my driving career. near misses, people who somehow think brake checking a 40 ton truck is fighting climate change or Donald Trump, karens blocking roads bcs they dont want a truck in the neighborhood, DMV screwing up FOUR TIMES in past year, cancelling license saying med card is dead when its current, etc. i know youve seen it too. it was getting to me so much i had to get out and away before i lost it and began to drive over people.
@@erichooligan9329 I hear ya. I've been retired for 4 years. My last 4 years of driving was one trip a night from Pendleton, OR to Portland to a grocery warehouse, 4 nights a week, drop & hook. OR is a 55mph state for trucks, although trucks are allowed 60, so I'd just set the cruise on 60, sit back and relax. Not much traffic on I-84 at night. Once back in Pendleton at 5 or 6AM I'd sit and b/s with the manager while the pallets were being pulled off my truck. Loved every minute of that. I did 10 years hauling logs in NE OR and SE WA- that was awesome. 3 times I had a mountain lion cross the road ahead of me. Once I saw a moose calmly standing in a creek in water up to his belly and snow on the ground. Another time I saw a black bear tearing up the loggers camp site. I was on one haul that was so steep it took 4 sets of 3-railer chains to get up to it. Hauled fuel in 3 states for 2 years. Ran 48 states & Canada for 10 years pulling a reefer, hauled redwood furniture parts out of CA for 1 year. Pulled a belly dump for a concrete company for 2 years. The coolest tractor I ever had was a 4-axle long-nose conventional Pete with the frowning sun visor and a Cat motor.
I can only imagine what a job it must be today trying to be a trucker! I hope you can find a good local job!

My Grandson’s name is Remy and he is a huge construction vehicle fan. I ran my own business for 30 years and still remember those first few years of lean cash flow. Stick with it and keep within your means and all will be fine.

@@geddon436 Grew up working for my fathers service garage and towing company -- this is where my fascination for trucks both small and large came to fruition. My business after college was computer systems, I was on the beginning of the PC revolution in the 80's. Just retired after 30 years.
Yep... runned my for 17 years... MSW tippers and walking floor.. some dumps.. some month were in Red financially, first comes the drivers than untouchable maintenance and repairs petty cash, we owners are rhe last to be paid...don't miss it..
Unfortunately over here in CT, triaxle dump OO are very closed business, most companies and quarries don't lease OO..

Also, in my career as production engineer who actually is hands on doing CNC programming and set ups, we have boring days where there is work that must be done accurately and timely but is boring. This is the hardest struggle for many young people starting a career. The newness wares of and we all must push through on the boring days or weeks. It's actually a very important part of work. Staying with it.

Been driving over 30 years now, CB radio taught me alot those frist years, backing into a paver, chip spreader or keeping under a milling machine. Central Jersey. Talking about heavy traffic everywhere.
Great to see! My father ran over the road for near 50 years. My sister ran over the road for UPS for 38 years and her husband pulls for Yellow frt. started when he was 21 and is now 74 and still climbing into the cab. As for me when I got out of the Marine Corps in 77 got my chauffeur license which converted to CDL. I was in construction but due to climate (MN, IA area) things shut down for the winter so I jump in the seat of a freight shaker cab over with a screaming Detroit 8V71T (350 it was known as) with and easy 13 spd, haul grain to the river, Mississippi, dump it run into Chicago and pickup steel for a back haul. In the summer it was in heavy equipment moving dirt. In a straight, like your doing with pup, or semi end or side dumps. Unlike you though, I was on somebody else's trucks for a few contractors, the non-union side of course. I had a thing about keeping the cab clean and always tried to get the same unit but when pulling for a family operation the kids always got their pick first! Sadly, for me they always chose the truck I had the day before! And I might get one that wasn't crapped up or on that one of the kids had been in prior which was always crapped up, soda cans or bottles, cigarette packs, chip bags and a good layer of dirt. Food for thought when you go to expand your business. I had worked for a contractor out of Great Falls MT and he required that all trucks and equipment cabs are to be cleaned daily and if not you were pointed to your vehicle and the road. He had KW's, Pete's, Mack's (including a 1951 Mack water truck, positive ground twin stick) which was used as a disciplinary vehicle, suspension worked when tank was full but spray for 60 seconds, mechanical spring seat and like riding a brick! That guy started with a dump truck and loader. When he sold out in 1989 he took $13.8M on equipment and $4M on his shop, thank you Richie Brothers. At peak he had 400 employees. Don't let that dream even fade a little! Wish you the very best in your venture! (Marysville though? You have great stamina!) I'm over here on the east side of the state where I have retired after 60 years earning a buck!

Well got damn it, once you pay for that bitch you need a new. Working hard, stressed out with drivers and sitting in an old ass dirty truck that's making noises that you can only hope will go away, because you damn sure don't have the money to fix something else, is nothing short of insanity. If you have to make a note on a truck that cost half of your house, your are just asking for bad luck, bad health and possibly in the witness protection program while hiding from creditors and your ex-wife. It's your life, but you have been warned!...🧐

Dauminique I love watching your videos, not just for the driving but for talking about the daily problems with running a business. My wife and I have run our own environmental construction business for 30 years. Those first few years were really a struggle but we somehow survived. I believe our success was due to us providing our clients with excellent service at a reasonable price. We always try to meet our clients needs and never promise them anything we can't deliver. I'm not sure how you get paid by your clients, but our biggest hurdle was maintaining cash flow, especially when our clients take 60-90 days to pay. Hang in there and you will do great. Can't wait for the next video.

Hello Dauminique, Am new to your channel. Question? Ever considered back-up camera(s) on your prime mover or trailer? Cheers, great video and I can see you understand how to operate your rig with ease. You probably know larger turning circles (forward and reversing) where possible may help the reduction on your tyre wear. Just a thought. Remember, the only time you fail is when you quit.

I wasn't a mom but a Dad and had three young kids (and two large dogs LOL) home, until school age, while I did programming from home and wife gone on business a week at a time every other week so I have some idea what that takes. Did have a part time nanny usually. I remember several times a day pushing a double stroller with two little ones strapped in and a dog leash in each hand with two big dogs at the same time LOL. After that experience one learns to respect working moms!

My 379 Pete breaks those hood straps twice a year, always order a few on amazon and have on hand. i always carry a short bungee in the cab (bout 8 inch) and can hook both hooks around the bracket and hook the strap over the piece on the hood. gets you thru the day.. good luck on your trucking venture from a former oly wash resident

It’s a relief watching your video, I’m a 28 year old dump truck owner operator in Atlanta. Just got my first dump truck and currently in my first month of running and it’s going great but if you don’t fix things on your truck or make sure it’s in good condition you will always have problems. Problems=lost money. Rebuilt transmission, replaced exhaust, welded a hole in my air tank, and drilled dried asphalt out of bed, with other minor repairs I ended up spending $5,500 prior to even getting on the road but just like you I dream big and see the long game and if you play it correctly you can expand your trucks and see true success in this industry. ooofff was down in mcdonough for training at NS , got to go back cause i was one wrong answer away from heading to binghamton NY to start on the job conductor training off exit 216 on i75 , was scared to drive in a jeep compass let alone a dump truck

A suggestion to aid your backing. Install small cameras on either side (or both like I did) where the tail lights and such are. Connect them to a monitor in the cab. Not only does it help with backing, but can be proof in case of an accident of some kind. Also think of camera on windshield and hood mirrors for the same reason of proof in case of an accident.
Yes, as an Owner/Operator you NEED cameras, plus they're a write off on your taxes.
It really has come to that with some people looking for a payout..

Hey lady!! I miss the dump life. Construction is the bomb! I drove end dumps for the most part (7 axles), tri-axles, low-boy and I have Doubles and triples endorsement. I drove dumps for 4 years for a company M&M trucking in Auburn, AL. I was the first woman and only to drive end dumps there in 53-58 years of the company's existence. (I had a tragedy that led me to leave in 2017 and illness and I also had a problem with a new dispatcher playing favoritism) Dumping was the highlight of my trucking career hands down. I've had my CDL since 1999 and between my 2 children I have 15-16 years documented OTR, local, regional, and dump experience. I remember I took my daughter out with me when I was local in Atlanta as an O/O when she was about a year to get started again. (She's 18 now) But go head lady ....keep trucking. Proud of you.🥰 Not sure how long you've been driving (cuz I just happened upon your video) but you're doing well. To have a husband that's a diesel mechanic is beautiful. (I'm not married but I have an ex of 20nyears and we're still friends and he works in the shop for a major trucking company so if I ever got started again I'd hire him part-time. I have a trucking buddy here in Alabama that was leased on to the dump company I was with. He was there 24 years. He owned 3 other trucks (2 flatbed, one dump) that he managed outside the main job but he kept a new Kenworth and leased from them every 3 years (to be sure maintenance in truck was up to par. The boss and he showed me his invoices back then and he came in to work at 7:30 and was done round 4:30-5 and brought home $9-10k monthly after paying company fuel, his note and insurance and putting away his fees for highway taxes and quarterly taxes. His note was around $2350. So, you're doing great. I was gonna drive for UPS but you have to keep the primary job in order to be on the call list to drive in hopes that a permanent run opens up. But when you're #18 down the seniority list and 96 runs are full time with 4 drivers that won't retire after they've been there 40 years already 😳 it's non motivating to me. I took a warehouse loader job there to get in the door but it's wearing me out and even though I can test to drive there at $33.50hour I don't wanna have to still load. I've owned trucks before and I can't put others in a truck sitting behind a UPS steering wheel or loading their trucks. My daughter has graduated now and she and my 11 year old son are coming with me this summer. I plan to do a walk-a-way lease until the end of the year and buy some dumps 2023. Watching this video has given me a little more inspiration. Keep pushing. And as far as the chains? They should be up as high as possible. My ex boss always always hollered about them. Every time i head into Michigan, i see these dumps with trailers, ive done dump before but never with these trailers. Its very interesting to see how you finess the trailer into a position to dump. Im now a 53 foot dry van guy. Kudos to you
I don't know if you follow the local auctions. I was able to find one with a company that closed . I was able to get brand new tires for less than half the cost of retail. Good luck with your business. Its a fine line between profit and loss.

I just found your RUclips channel, and I just received my CDL in April 2023. After 23 years in electronics manufacturing I decided to change careers and went through Mclane food service CDL training , with the end goal of getting into construction running dump trucks. I hated being called or texted by Mclane dispatch at all hours of the day with only 3-4 hours notice to dispatch so I jumped ship early and got on at a small asphalt company in Auburn Washington called Statewide Parking Lot Services and so far it is way better than food service. I am learning how to operate a dump truck, and learning to dump and pick up asphalt. So far it has been an amazing experience and I look forward to learning more about the industry and dump trucks in general. I will definitely be watching more of your videos to help me along the way so thank you for posting them for the rest of us just starting out. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Awesome update on the progress of your company! You mentioned that your husband is upgrading his CDL and that's got me curious. Is he going from a class B to an A, or does he already have an A and he needs an endorsement to pull Truck and Trailer?
Sounds like B to an A, as an A is already about truck and trailer.
It could very well be that he also got a Class A but with an E restriction aka no manual and he had to upgrade so that he can drive their manual truck.

I have to agree with you about the same old thing over and over. I was an o/o in Michigan pulling an 8 axle doing paving and that was what I hated most just going back and forth to the plant and job. Love the channel
Thanks for sharing some of the business side of trucking. In one of your other videos you mentioned that you usually charge an hourly rate. When do you start/stop the clock? Do you charge from when you leave your house to when you get back, only loaded time, or some other way?
