My husband was watching your videos, and I seriously thought he was watching Bob Ross... Did you know you sound eerily the same? You just speak RC instead of happy little trees! Love it!
My current setup is crawlmaster 550 8t with br xl esc on 3s. I love it. Soon upgrading to 4s. I also have a trailmaster 550 12t. Not sure what happened to it. Very difficult to turn. Almost like the magnets flipped polarity. Only got a few runs out of it. Ended up swapping in castle sidewinder I had laying around. Any guess what might have happened? Awesome products. One of the coolest, laid back and intelligent people on RUclips.
Thank you for explaining and showing the difference, understanding how these motors work makes it so much easier to make a good buying decision and avoid the costly poor ones...
You are a maniac sir!!! I have three crawlmaster sport 550 8 turn and they have power for days. I will only run holmes hobbies motors. They simply perform.
Been archiving your brushed videos I recently started going the brushed route and really overlooked what I was missing so much goes into your escs and motors most aren’t aware of I was using a brand H brushed esc and your 27T torque master expert and it did well however the drag brake was sub par after trying the Holmes hold on your brushed esc I was amazed it was well worth the money and the low speed modulation was excellent going on this addictive habit I created I bought a crawl master pro 13T geared down and 4s WOW unreal low speed control and tons on wheel speed when I need it I know it may be more maintenance in the long run and most of my brushless bro’s laugh at me but when you crawl lines with grace and control your rig looks better keep up the great work on brushed motors you have a customer for life....
I had trailmaster 550 27T at my traxxas sport, then bought the Element Sendero and loved the 5 slots motors.. so now I have Crawlmaster sport 550 12T on both Traxxas an Element rigs. Very good motor for the price.
When i bought your motor , esc combo have been super happy with them . Bought a 35 combo and 27 combo . 2 yrs ago just need to buy new brushes for motors
I have ordered 6 x 13T crawlmasters thanks to a recommendation from Harley Designs they should be here within the week. I do want to say a huge Thank you for your customer service not just for funny and informative videos but for providing affordable motors to upgrade my trucks. A big thanks to Justin for his fast reply to my enquire very impressed cheers
I run several of your motors and they are definitely awesome. Thanks for such great products and giving us consistent value.. I recommend your motors to everyone.
Absolutely love these scientifically educational videos from you my friend. I love understanding the how and why things work the way they do. This was a great demonstration of how and why your motors can be more efficient than brand "T" 😂 thanks.
Still learning 🤣 I've been drifting since 2017 so I got a pretty good idea of the turns and motors but crawling took me to a whole new level and watching your videos I've learned so much about motors and speed controls thank you. 🤙🏻🔥😎🔥👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When building my first rig I out in a puller pro and the Holmes no bec servo because I didn't want to feel any what 'what if' or to spend the money 2x. What a fantastic product and fantastic service all delivered to Scotland. I also bought the mamba X from you and although it's a bit of a thought process to get it going with all the options my crawler just works exactly how I want it to work and I never get frustrated with any of the parts
Millitesula? Did I spell that right. Man I learn something new every time I watch your videos. I have 4 of your brushes motors now. Latest was a crawlmaster sport 12t 550. Incredibly good quality at a bargain price
Currently use 16t 540s brand 'R' in both trucks, Element Rtr (came with a brand 'R') and TRX Sport kit (bought Brand R Radon). But you sir have convinced me to upgrade both to 12t 550 CM Sports since there is room for 550 cans.
I tested my first Holmes hobbies motor the last weekend. Very impressed with the performance on the budget motor. I've used the 550 crawlmaster 13t 5-slot on 3s with 1080 hw esc. It didn't get hot at all. I hill climbed in sand using second gear, (gmade buffalo with steel wheels). The motor only got to about 37°c. My first generation scx10 with closed can 550 21t 3-slot run way hotter. And the gmade is also faster in second gear.
Super excited to drop a crawlmaster sport into my Capra. I didn’t know I wasn’t able to use a 550 can in the Capra so I had to dig up my old 10$ 45t Rc4wd can. I hope they don’t sell out too quickly thoough.
Question Sir: I have a couple of the HG P408 (these rigs are about 12 pounds each) for myself and the boy. The stock motors are way to fast for such a scale rig. I assume they are are running a 12T to 15T 3-slot 550 (but I have not put one on the dyno or taken one apart yet). I need to slow the rigs down and give us more low end. Before and after the upgrade, I will throw the rigs up on the chassis dyno and document the results. Until I saw this, I was ready to get a couple Trailmaster Sports in the 550 27T which from my understanding would be closer to a 35T 540 with more torque. After watching this, I am maybe I should go with the Crawlmaster Sport 550 15T, 5-slot motor. The question is should the Crawlmaster Sport with the 5-slot setup be closer to a 540 3-slot 45T motor (maybe a touch higher RPM)? Also by going with the 5-slot instead of the 3-slot, I would then gain more torque at lower speeds, correct. Thanks for your input and once I hear back, I will get the motors on order.
Mr. Holmes, three questions: 1). Please tell us why you prefer the 13T 540's vs. say, an 11T; and the 12T 550 Crawl Master vs. say the 10T? We hear all the time power up and gear down. 2.) Is there more low speed/start-up control on a slower motor, or is the slower motor just able to handle more voltage and keep the overall wheel speeds down with higher voltage? 3.) It's also been said that a fast cheap motor will accomplish the same things as a slower more expensive motor if it's geared low enough. Do you find the previous statement to be true? Thanks.
He is a salesman selling a product. Keep that in mind. Also keep in mind I have won comps with 8 dollar rc4wd motors. Skill is 99% of driving these little rigs. Their power to weight ratio is astronomical regardless of how much you spent on electronics. I can dump almost any truck out of its box brand new and be on the podium.
I've recently put the 550 12 turn n my honcho nd wow what a difference a great motor makes..truck weighs n right under 10 pounds nd it hardly gets warm doing serious crawling..ill never go back to the other 20 dollar motors it's holmes for now on 🖒oh yea nd the torque is amazing !!!
Awesome video. I ordered the crawlmaster expert 540 16T motor for my Losi night crawler running a 20T stock pinion. Do i need to gear down when on 2S or 3S and are there any setup recommendations for such a setup? I don't want to go brushless for this rig.
really good video, good explanation. I like your stuff, unfortunately there is no regular (official) shop in Germany (Europe) yet. I would like to buy the TRAILMASTER SPORT 550 12T... but +24$ shipping
Love these types of videos from you John. Very cool you have these lower cost motors. Keep those secrets...there are thieves out there. Would've like to of seen a Magnum comparison to the regular Crawlmaster's and TorqueMaster's.
Saw a video recently comparing your Crawlmaster motors to the stock motor that comes in the Element RTR trucks. I was not surprised to see a significant increase in torque and drag brake. I WAS surprised to see the HH 10t was SLOWER than the brand R 16t. My questions: If going with a 550 motor, would the 8t be a more similar speed to what I have now? If it’s too fast, will gearing down get me out of the “golden zone” and just produce more heat than say the 10t or 12t? Thanks 1,000,000 Got an 8t sitting in my cart, I’ll pull the trigger when I hear back!
What motor would you put in 10lb+ TRX-4 for trail use? Reverse turn stock traxxas motor in it now with a HW1080 ESC. 2 speed transmission in use as well as switchable diff locks.
What motor with a 1080 esc would you run in a class 1 with a vfd kit transmission and ar45 straight axles. Or would you switch to brushless for comping
Thank you for these videos I will be buying your products for sure as I was advised my local gurus but after learning (mostly from your youtube) I feel confident in which motor I am after.
I just picked up at 540 13 turn crawl master at my local hobby shop. I wanted a 550 but they didn’t have one in stock. Do you recommend any breaking procedures ! Or run what you brought and hope you brought enough
Good day, im using a trx4 rig with a 1080 esc and wondering to change my stock motor especially for the drag brake. Which would be better? Trailmaster 35t or crawlmaster 20t?
Im probably going to be upgrading the electronics in my TRX4 soon. Im liking these new motors. What do you recommend? Keep in mind its a pretty heavy rig and I want a lot of low end and can use second gear ro get some more wheel speed out of it. Im running three cell as well so I have the extra voltage already. The last factor is the gearing. I would be open to changing it as well to get the best performance out of it. I want my drag brake back.
I have had my crawler for just about a year now. do not really do much crawling. most of my stuff was buy bash an run fast doing 50 mph across the dirt. I live out here in the Mohave desert in ca. so i am looking at increasing from 11 mph to at least 30 mph in second gear. but want that torque an crawling power in low gear. Would you say it is better to go brush less for even more stability. so would like your opinion on this thought.
I’ve had the crawlmaster sports. Great motors. Especially playing in water. My question is how waterproof are the crawlmaster experts?? Are they better than the sport?? Or not at all??
@@HolmesHobbies thanks. Do the expert motors have a stronger drag brake than the sport?? I find the sport motors have a tough time holding my heavy rig on a hill. So maybe I should grab a expert motor instead??
Great info! You should consider teaching! You have the knack for it. I ordered one of your Crawlmaster Expert 540 13T yesterday for my Enduro builders kit. What pinion would you recommend?
I just installed a BR-XL and a 13 turn sport motor in my Enduro and love it ...I wish I would have add the BR-XL sooner the ESC is just fantastic I was using the HW 1080 there is no comparison between the two...it is definatly worth the extra cost....
@@czebalaf Across the board better drag break, better hill hold with Holmes Hold and the addition of being to use 4s to produce more bottom end grunt ...ease of programming through Castle link...
I have a 13t crawlmaster sport 550. About how much is the speed difference compared to the trx4 stock motor? Im running Stock gearing, 1080 esc, 3s lipo
I just got a TRX 4 sport (RTR), plan on swapping out the motor to go with a Hobbywing Quicrun WP1080. I mainly do trailing/terrain driving, but also occasionally some crawling over rocks etc. I wnated my trx to look "scale", so i have the expedition rack, but have added some brass to the front axle to get the "nose down" and not tipping backwards. But, not sure which motor i should get (and im on a budget)....so have been looking at the cralwmaster sport 550 13T and the Trailmaster sport 550 27T. Any advice on which would be my best choice? Or advice on a better choice in the crawlmaster/trailmaster lineup?
I’m thinking about swapping my stock TRX4 motor (21T brushed 550 ‘Titan’) and stock esc, for a Surpass Hobby V2 Rocket 17.5T/2200KV 540s sensored brushless w/adjustable timing (currently set to 30 between 20 & 60) & a 120amp sensored esc from Banggood. Should I? Why? Or Shouldn’t I? Why? I’m very new to the whole crawl scene (that maybe obvious?) lol!!! I’m literally clueless on this? I’m reading off the product wile writing this! 😁😕
Hey bud,ive been trying to figure out the best motor/esc combo for my gen 7. Running 19-50 gearing with a Stealth x trans. Steel gears throughout, steel driveline. Im looking for the ability to trail, and low speed control. Thank you! Love your videos!
I’m building a trail finder 2 for some ultra scale trailing and some lighter rock crawling. I’ll prob get a brxl esc and a motor to go with it but my head is beginning to spin with all the choices from Holmes hobbies!... recommend a few? Torquemaster vs crawlmaster?
This is one of those things that make HH the greatest! Not only are you concerned with the top end line of the market but you also think about the broke guy!
We can thank Josh at Extreme Scale Performance for pushing me to focus on budget motors too. He really hammered the nail in that I needed to focus energy on an affordable range.
Great video, I have a much better understanding of your motors. I like the idea of brushed motors with a neodymium magnet I haven't seen any thing else like it.
you probably wont see this as it was posted a year ago but, I have just blown my stock trx 4 sport motor. I've been looking at the crawl master sport 550 21t, I have a 10t pinion and 45t spur and liked the speed that ratio gives me with the stock motor. Will the 21t 550 give me the same sort of speed as the stock or will I have to get a lower turn motor?? anyone who knows feel free to answer!
Hi John I too would like too know that u think is best for the Capra. Motor and esc. Hope someone comes out with a scx10 motor transmission skid to make a better gear reduction.🙄
His web site has recommended motors for every truck worth owning. The chart has a range of suggested motors for each truck and multiple suggestions for what you will be doing. It's super helpful. Pick the lowest turn suggestion for plenty of wheel speed. Pick the highest turn suggestion for maximum torque.
I really miss the super low and slow, smooth crawl that brushed gives me. Does a sensored brushless even come close to that smooth brushed pull-away? I also miss that stall-ability, or recovery therefrom.
Ok been watching videos, want to replace my stock axial honcho 27t with a one of your crawlmaster motors. What do you suggest? Really nothing special but a daily driver trail rig, doesnt need an extreme crawler type motor but want better than stock. What do you suggest, can you send me a link? Thanks and love all your tech and info!!
I'm looking to improve my trx4 still on the brand T 550 motor what would you suggest suits it best I like the idea of wheel speed and I'm on the UK can I get it over here ? Or do I need to make a trip to the US ?
The Trailmaster 21t 550 or Crawlmaster 12t 550 is my preference. Both are close, but slightly faster than stock. If you want much more I would suggest brushless. We ship to the UK frequently. Or you can use asiatees or RC mart
So, as I understand it in this video, the only difference between the Trailmaster and Crawlmaster Sport motors is the armature? Am I assuming this correctly?
@HolmesHobbies sweet. I'm loving my Trailmaster Sport, gonna get a Crawlmaster Sport next. What would be the turn equivalent of a Trailmaster 21 turn 550? Would that be the 12 turn?
i need a drop in motor for my axial scx10iii im looking at the sport 10t is that too much for my stock gearing/esc? i want crawling power and be able to walk down a trail with it infront of me not behind me.
Which motor do you recommend for the Traxxas Trx4 Sport? I'm looking for a Sport motor that is close in wheel speed as the 21T stock motor. Thanks in advance.
Hi John, which one of your 550 motors would you recommend for my Scout ii Gen 8? Im thinking maybe something equivalent to the stock 550 wheel speed & torque unless you suggest otherwise ? should I buy the Crawlmaster 550 12 turn. Im running a Hobbywing 1080 esc w/ a FlySky gt3b radio & I definitely dont want to lose my drag brake if that needs to be taken into consideration, Im currently running mostly 2s lipo but will be running 3s as soon as I can get more if that matters. Thanks
@@HolmesHobbies Oh Darn I ended up getting the 21T Trailmaster, I researched like crazy for hours but I just wasn't sure which way to go so I flipped a coin lol.. Im sure it'll be Great & its not like I broke the bank buying it. I know I'll be buying & trying many more of your motors in the future.... Thanks so much
Thank you so much John. This was very helpful. I think everyone can use a little knowledge when it comes to Motors. The more you know the better........ I hope to see more vids explaining your Motors and the purpose of each as these vids are my favorite. I bought your Trailmaster sport 540 (27 turn) for one of my rigs and ran it all summer. . Even for a low-end inexpensive motor this thing runs so smooth and startups are phenomenal. . It was my first homes hobby motor and I'm in love. I love how smooth it is much smoother than the stock can.
Thanks for that, I do have a quick question. whats the difference in torque from say the 540 Expert or 540 Pro vs just the bigger 550 in general ? jumping from 540 to 550 does that automatically mean more torque or not necessarily because the 540 Expert /Pro are better built? if that makes any sense lol Thanks
Learned me something today I was thinking I have some old quad magnet cans laying around from fantom so what would happen in I put one of your 5 slit armatures in it I’m sure you know the answer will it be even smoother then the 2 magnet or not thanks
John Holmes oh yeah I remember I figured you would know thank you for really sharing your knowledge Ps if the 2200 revolver does work out please post it on Facebook or here really excited for that beast good weekend to you sir

I'm getting ready to buy a new kit and was wanting your brush set up and wondering which one to get thanks for the info
Mr. Holmes, three questions:

@bik0304 I haven't tested detent in a long time, trailmaster or Torquemaster will have better drag and hold if you are currently using a crawlmaster
Great info! You should consider teaching! You have the knack for it.
I ordered one of your Crawlmaster Expert 540 13T yesterday for my Enduro builders kit. What pinion would you recommend?
stock for the enduro is fine
I just installed a BR-XL and a 13 turn sport motor in my Enduro and love it ...I wish I would have add the BR-XL sooner the ESC is just fantastic I was using the HW 1080 there is no comparison between the two...it is definatly worth the extra cost....
Where do you feel the improvement?
@@czebalaf Across the board better drag break, better hill hold with Holmes Hold and the addition of being to use 4s to produce more bottom end grunt ...ease of programming through Castle link...
Great info John! I've got a Sport 540 ordered for my Capra.
Thanks for the explanation. Very informative as usual.
YOu have a great watch.. splash back of the 90's....
I have a 13t crawlmaster sport 550. About how much is the speed difference compared to the trx4 stock motor? Im running Stock gearing, 1080 esc, 3s lipo
John. Excellent review. Loved it! What is you recommendation for the Capra?
Awesome. Love the 5 slots.
I've always wondered why you refer to a brushed motors kv rating & not it's rpm? is kv the same as rpm?
The crawlmaster will be smoother. The trailmaster more torque and drag brake.
I pretty much run only crawlmaster in my own rigs.
Awesome Explanation love your products keep it Big and keep it up John Holmes ! Ha!
Just received my first Puller-Pro this week... Happy to be a Holmes customer.
Hey bud,ive been trying to figure out the best motor/esc combo for my gen 7. Running 19-50 gearing with a Stealth x trans. Steel gears throughout, steel driveline. Im looking for the ability to trail, and low speed control. Thank you! Love your videos!
Oh and running portal axles.
Thanks for explaining that 👍always quality with Holmes Hobbies. Love your products.🤠🇺🇸☝️
I’m building a trail finder 2 for some ultra scale trailing and some lighter rock crawling. I’ll prob get a brxl esc and a motor to go with it but my head is beginning to spin with all the choices from Holmes hobbies!... recommend a few? Torquemaster vs crawlmaster?
both are solid choices. I tend to favor crawlmaster. The average customer chooses torquemaster
So what is the torque density figure for the puller pro over the CM pro?
This is one of those things that make HH the greatest! Not only are you concerned with the top end line of the market but you also think about the broke guy!
We can thank Josh at Extreme Scale Performance for pushing me to focus on budget motors too. He really hammered the nail in that I needed to focus energy on an affordable range.
You should host a science show.
Been trying to find a CrawlMaster Sport 550 12T, and it's not in stock anywhere...not even on your website. :-( Any idea when we'll see more?
we restocked yesterday, check back
Well I know what motor I'm getting next Holmes! :) .
Haha that intro, is John a secret Juggalo?
Hi John I too would like too know that u think is best for the Capra. Motor and esc. Hope someone comes out with a scx10 motor transmission skid to make a better gear reduction.🙄
So what would you recommend as an upgrade for my Sendero kit? Running a rc4wd as it was what my hobby had in stock and didn't want to wait for a motor
What’s a good motor for a purpose built trx4 with the traxx?
Thanks for that, really helpful
I really miss the super low and slow, smooth crawl that brushed gives me. Does a sensored brushless even come close to that smooth brushed pull-away? I also miss that stall-ability, or recovery therefrom.
Mine do. Puller Pro, TrailMaster Pro, and Revolver are all extremely close to brushed smooth.
Crawlmaster 13t 540 for similar wheelspeed. 16t for more control
@@HolmesHobbies Appreciate the quick reply, can you explain the benefit of more control?
I'm looking to improve my trx4 still on the brand T 550 motor what would you suggest suits it best I like the idea of wheel speed and I'm on the UK can I get it over here ? Or do I need to make a trip to the US ?
The Trailmaster 21t 550 or Crawlmaster 12t 550 is my preference. Both are close, but slightly faster than stock. If you want much more I would suggest brushless. We ship to the UK frequently. Or you can use asiatees or RC mart
Thanks for replying loving your videos and loving getting back into this hobby after a 25 year break 🤫
So, as I understand it in this video, the only difference between the Trailmaster and Crawlmaster Sport motors is the armature? Am I assuming this correctly?
@@CajunManNick1980 yes!
@HolmesHobbies sweet. I'm loving my Trailmaster Sport, gonna get a Crawlmaster Sport next. What would be the turn equivalent of a Trailmaster 21 turn 550? Would that be the 12 turn?
Whats the bump from pro to puller and puller to magnum?
Here's my question. If my esc has a 16t limit, can i run a 13t 5 slot since it's equivalent to a 27 3 slot?
i need a drop in motor for my axial scx10iii im looking at the sport 10t is that too much for my stock gearing/esc? i want crawling power and be able to walk down a trail with it infront of me not behind me.
Which motor do you recommend for the Traxxas Trx4 Sport? I'm looking for a Sport motor that is close in wheel speed as the 21T stock motor. Thanks in advance.
I'm running a Crawlmaster Sport 550 12t in mine, it's butter smooth and powerful.
Thanks
I personally love the 12t crawlmaster 550, always a solid choice.
Thanks so much
I just got my Capra. If I get the 540 crawlmaster expert in 13 t will I need to change the pinion? If so what do you recommend? Thanks
Brad Cruse 16 turn for more torque 13 turn for more wheel speed. ( with stock pinion) either one you go with you’ll be happy.
Yes, longer motors make more torque. Its about 50% higher between my 540 and 550 if we assume same materials, quite noticeable.
@@HolmesHobbies Oh Wow okay, Thanks so much.....👍🏻
That is a damn sweet shirt 👍
Best of the best 540 for the capra in your opinion john.?
Auto correct changed capra to car
Learned me something today I was thinking I have some old quad magnet cans laying around from fantom so what would happen in I put one of your 5 slit armatures in it I’m sure you know the answer will it be even smoother then the 2 magnet or not thanks
Doesnt work out smoother, only for 3 slots is it smoother to use the old school 4 mag. Magnetics are complicated, ha!
John Holmes oh yeah I remember I figured you would know thank you for really sharing your knowledge
Ps if the 2200 revolver does work out please post it on Facebook or here really excited for that beast good weekend to you sir
