I built my first rc10 in 1990. I liked how everything was back then. Soldering lightbulbs together to drain cells. I had a shoe box full of cells that I'd match together and solder a pack up. Cleaning brushed motors, using commutator cleaning bars, timing, armature lathes. Today everything is RTR and ready to go. Back in they day people seemed more knowledgeable because you HAD to learn/do that stuff. A lot of young people today don't really seem to know/understand much (there ones that do, don't get me wrong). And it's because half of them have never even assembled a kit. They just put a battery in and turned it on.

I literally just fixed the timing on the motor and I got this notification
I have been into Rc for 35 years and have never done anything with timing this video taught me a lot after I fixed the timing the motor worked flawlessly but I learned from your video that it was spinning the wrong way and so I did a 180 with the timing and now it spins correctly that just absolutely blows my mind you could do that again thank you again in case you’re interested it’s a team kinwald the dirtinator

Nice to see some love for the Brushed motor guys. I have been running the BRXL esc's for almost 5 years. Ive been running Holmes Expert 40T, on 3s for two or three years now. I love how smooth, quiet, and dependable HH equipment is. Oh Im running the 12v servo too!!!. Wow that bad boy is no joke. Gotta love not needing BEC!!!!!
Keep the videos and top shelf products coming. Thumbs-up

Anyway, I didn't know that they can handle a 12v Servo - *without* BEC!! John, your products just keep getting more impressive!

Hello, 1st, thank you so very much for the educational videos. You make learning your products fun and entertaining. Also, learning the technical aspects of your products is invaluable and so very useful. I’m new to crawling. My question: Prefacing my question. I am an engineer from the aerospace industry, I work for an airline. All components on commercial aircraft are tested and retested for certification purposes. Regarding new aircraft, you can find many RUclips videos such as the testing of the A380 wheel and brake assembly. Specifically, you will see the wheel and brake spin up testing the brake assembly to failure. Do you have the equipment to test shaft HP on one of your brushed and similar brushless motors. I would like to see a video of you spinning up the motor measuring Current Draw, Voltage Drop, Shaft torque, watts, and perhaps spinning the motor to ultimate failure. Thank you in advance! Rob-

peak torque will be around 30t range for a 540. this also increases brush life compared to faster motors.

Great video! This will be a life saver for moa guys 👍 I'm building a dual 2200 kV Axial dragster and I've been researching... It looks like two ESC /two motors is the most reliable setup. I've seen a theory where they would use one ESC with two sensor motors. The first motor was connected with the sensor wire and the second motor operated sensorless .. stating that the first motor would give the ESC feedback to give both Motors the proper power.. my Layman's Theory is that I know my RPMs won't be any higher but using two Motors will help share the workload so I can use higher gearing just giving me incredible wheel speeds for hydroplaning vertical pit wall climbing Tire ripping speed on 6s because I'm also a purveyor of power breaking parts😯 so my question is if I used to ESCs with two Motors can I bench run them and adjust the timing through Castle Creations link to try to help out with synchronicity with a rpm gauge? Thanks 👍

Hey John! Thanks for these videos. They're very informative and in my case, somewhat of a refresher... I ran semi pro in the 80's to mid 90's.I have a question... Back in the day, we used to put "socks" over our Endbells, secured around the can with a rubber band or a zip tie. Kept larger debris out of our Motors. This is a bit of a question from the last video I watched about running in water....
I was wondering, would that old trick help our Rigs today, especially when going through water?? The way I see it, it won't keep everything out, but it should keep out the bigger chunks, that can jam up Brushes and Bearings...What do you think?Carmine 🚂

    • @HolmesHobbies

Im building a electric bike, and i have a question about the rotation of the motor. I've built my diy bike, but the motors spinning the wrong direction. How can I reverse the direction of the motor? I have it hooked up to a 2 pin rocker switch and a 22.2v 1400mah battery and it all works, but how would i have to change it if i wanted to make it go the opposite direction? Its going clockwise now, but i want it to go counter clockwise. If i swap the connectors on the motor ( like connect positive motor wire to negative battery wire and negative motor wire to positive battery wire ), would that work?

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  7 лет назад

Ric Gruber good question! You are hearing brush noise, which is common on stand up brush rebuildable motors without brush dampers (our pro handwounds have dampers). The brush seats in one direction during break in, while in reverse the brush wants to sit a little different. The sharp brush edge catches the comm gap, and makes a little noise. flipping the brush or sanding the sharp edges can help.

    • @HolmesHobbies

yes, it depends on the orientation of magnets, direction of winding, and termination style on the comm. Our standard of manufacturing puts it on the left when the timing mark is forward.

Hi John, I recently purchases a 540 35T sensored motor. Out of Box the rotation was faster in forward direction and slower in reverse. The current draw from a 3.6V 1900mAh Ni-Cd in the factory setting was Forward-1.06A & Reverse-1.04A. So I tries to advance the timing slowly by 6 degrees and the current rose to Forward-1.08A & reverse-1.06A, at 12 degrees the forward was 1.2A & reverse- 1.18A. Finally at the third notch(marking) the current had risen drastically to 1.72A at forward direction and 1.68A for reverse(and speed reduced too a lot). Would this increase in current draw impact the life of the motor significantly?

Yes, increases in current will affect motor life, more significantly past 12 degrees of timing. The lower the better for brushes.

Thank you. So, currently I've kept it at 6 degrees. Should I go back to the factory setting for longer brush life?

Or is it so that you can run two motors at once
