I want to see a rematch, but what if you replace the "can't attack me in the first 5 minutes" rule with "you can't build static defense in allied bases"? I think that the second team, despite being the fastest at winning against you, wasted too much stuff on containing you instead of defending themselves. In the third match you weren't contained, could bully your neighbour and top left zerg in the early game, but everyone else protected themselves well enough that they could muster their 2nd tier armies to outpressure you by the end. Another interesting idea would be if you started with extra resources somehow, though I do not know how to mod that.
It is definitely fun to watch, but they should be more balanced. They can simply sac 2-3 players who spawned near your base and get resource transfers from them, and the rest will attack with abnormally high unit numbers. Maybe the solution is the rule they all should be in the game to win, meaning they have to help each other to defend and rebuild after retreat.
True point. However, it will take him several minutes to get back, basically, to his starting situation. If you take him out for 7 minutes, he's not a factor during the main part of the match.
@@sorsocksfake Not the main part, but it gives them time to come back for the final push. At some point, no matter how well you play, you will just get swamped with 4X-5X your maximum supply. And then it is just game over. Also spines/cannons/bunkers in the mineral line pretty much stops his early aggression in his tracks. If he can't take down at least some of the players within the first few minutes, then they'll come right back with a vengeance with the death ball.
Honestly, this has been a really great way to bring the bronze players in the community together and it inspired people who used to only watch to pick up the game and play again. At its peak there were 36 people in the in-game channel ready to play. Many of us were in a voice call cheering each other on each game, and afterwards we played a 6v6 and a 3v3 as a little after party. Some of us were previous players who haven't played in years. Some of us had only played against AI, campaign, or arcade, with this being our first serious attempt to play competitively. And some of us were parents cheering their kids on. We all celebrated each other's accomplishments, I can't tell you how crazy everyone went every time a nydus got up in time, lol And I'm just really glad that this challenge made all of that possible.
That sounds really cool. Goes to show how teamwork is crazy strong as a meta-strategy. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I hesitate to suggest a possible limitation based on that, just bc it's such a wholesome & fun aspect of the challenge for the community... but maybe a "Rule of Last Resort" could be restricting the ability of the players to communicate during the game. If nothing else, I mean, if _that_ ended up being the rule that did the trick over everything else like "no tier 3 ships", "no rush 5", etc. then I feel like the series as a whole would still have a pretty damn wholesome message about the power of working together haha. :)
As someone who was in this challenge, let me say 1v10 was underselling this challenge... It was more like a 1v15! We were all huddled in a vc, meaning we could coordinate much better than most team ladder games without vc. I spawned in the back of the map so i just mined and shared my resources with those who had their workers shot down, something I wouldnt be able to do without vc cause i was completely oblivious to who was getting attacked until someone said "noo uthermal killed all my workers!". To make it even harder, there was always someone streaming so non combatants could also help with callouts. By game three we had the knowledge of two games behind us and everyone was expecting mass reapers. Someone was talking about Dark's zerg and thats when I suggested nydus worms, so sorry Marc! It was a really fun event, and everybody was laughing when we realized the diamond player's kid was the one spawning next to Marc. Everybody who joined the lobby was praying they werent the color closest to him too haha Thanks for hosting, it was super fun and did look like you were about to break through at some points! That hero nuke at the end was wild!
It really was awesome to watch and I love that you guys all coordinated AND were stream sniping (?). If another one came out today I'd drop what I'm doing and watch is now.
27:33 "These players are ultra-passive"... you told them they couldn't attack for 5 minutes, and they've seen you reaper rush 2x times already, seems like a logical conclusion would be to build some defense.
Right? He commented on how much their economy suffered in game 2 from playing so aggressive and then forced them to play a defensive econ focused game he can't win
I think a lot of the differences between games (27:18) can be attributed to rules changes. Banning capital ships leads to more quick rushes instead of high-tech plays. Banning quick rushes leads to turtle plays.
29:30 One guy in the vc went. What if u do swarmhosts. He was like bet. Then we said MASS NYDUS AND HE DID AND IT WAS HILARIOUS TO WATCH JAJAJA. Man I loved this challenge
Start with a gold or a very experienced bronze lol and keep that one guy for all matches to try and rally the troops and give them ideas about how to counter
I'm Skulgren in the last game, the green terran that dropped both tanks and unseiged when I shouldn't have. I know it wasn't the goal, but hearing a bit about what I could have done better and focus on was super great! Thanks for the great game, and helping me feel extra included in a great community! (and thanks for the free micro coaching ;D )
The mob outside his door at 11:05. The nuke in his base. It's surprisingly fun watching Marc get tortured by bronze players 😅 I would definitely like to see a rematch. Idea for rule: all opponents must play the same race?
Even bronze players can build most basic static defense early on. Like a couple bunkers/photons/spines would shut early reapers pretty hard with them losing one of two players max. And after that they can flood with basically any unit imaginable. With no chance of retaliation as most units would be needed defending. I can not imagine the amount of rules needed to counter that.
Super fun games! I loved the one moment early on when the zealot was trying to break down the rocks locking that player in the base, when you killed it from behind. Total horror movie moment!
As a participant vc on discord grew as challenge went on; also someone always streamed. Game 1: 3-4 players Game 2 : 6-8 players and people from game one giving tips Game 3: 6 players approx plus people from games previous
that's bc not everyone realized there was a vc happening as they were being in SC2 (probably with only 1 monitor) and once they finished their games, they looked at what they missed :)
I don't think it is reasonable to beat 10 players alone, without ridiculous restrictions. Getting a teammate, and playing 2 vs 10 could be interesting.
That nuke was so funny. Came out of nowhere and i bet they were cheering at that landing. Haha I loved this challenge and want to see more. The bronze players are so wholesome in the comments
A full support terran will be a nightmare. Focus on getting and sharing resources. Surround his base with sensors, turrets, and tanks. Random group of marines or vikings to defend your team.
I think you should drop it to 8 players, rather than adding a lot more rules. 10 players is just too many. It doesn't even matter how few units they all build, it's an insane amount of units when you multiply by 10. On top of that, even if you kill, let's say 4 players, you're still on 6v1. There's just not enough time to kill enough players to win. The rest of the players you aren't attacking, no matter how bad their macro is, will amass an unstoppable army. But if it was 8 players, you kill 4, and then it's a 4v1. Obviously still hard, but maybe possible to survive to late game. And if late game becomes a problem, you could consider modifying the map to increase your own supply. You've also got to remember, your fans will be watching these games, and even if they are only bronze league players, they will learn some things from watching. I think the battle will actually be uphill from here, despite the fact that you are obviously learning too.
One idea for a challenge you might like: Boss mode challenge. (players: 7 or more VS uthermal+one minion(bronze-gold rank) You must defend a much lower mmr player(your minion) from 7+ other players. You cannot attack the enemy players' bases until your minion dies. Your bases cannot be attacked by the enemy players until your minion dies. Your minion must attempt to obey your strategies.
Speaking as someone who could never get beyond silver. General strategy is not usually the problem. It has more to do with builds, timings, multitasking, muscle memory and awareness.
Give yourself a gold base to start, or give them a supply cap Great video as always, I've been playing starcraft since 1998 and I'm too old to be competitive anymore but I still love your content.
that was soooo entertaining to watch. Marc is such an awesome person to let him be destroyed by bronze players. I would love to see a lot of these kind of games. Different number of opponents, rules, levels. So much fun. pls more of this!!
I'd like to see a setting in Starcraft 2 where minerals appear on the map a few minutes after a bunch of units die, in the location they die, so that the total number of minerals in the map stay mostly the same.
This video is the embodiment of the concept of action economy. Even with the huge disparity in experience and skill, there's just too much stuff to deal with at once.
Would a better strategy be to turtle your base from the start instead of sending out harassment reapers? The 10x bronze still have unlimited resources with the harassment, maybe it'll be more efficient to bunker up and wait for them to run out of resources if you survive long enough. Love the content regardless.
it's interesting he says "ok we've killed this player" when they still have a nexus/CC and can still just rebuild workers given the team mates can feed minerals, imo a player is not "dead" until they cannot possibly make more workers
Yeah, those were overwhelming odds. If each player produce at least 1/10 of their army units, they would match Uthermals. And thermy had to pick them off one at a time while defending his own base..
10 bronze vs The Golden Armada. You have to rush to nothing but carriers and a mothership. You cannot build cannons or shield batteries. This is the way.
That was fun! Instead of a rematch with new limitations I'd like to see a rematch with no limitations but less players. Reduce the number of players each time you lose so we can see how many Bronze Players it takes to beat a Grandmaster.
Is it possible for you to play something like a chess simul? Like, play two 1v1s against different opponents at the same time? Say, two computers or vms, a copy of sc2 on each, and either two keyboards, two mice, and a swivel chair; or some other way of switching input between the two (powertoys, kvm switch, vm tools, or whatever)?
I can't believe you surrendered so early in the last game, I had 2 ghost (finally with cloak) in a medivac near your base with 1-1 nuke, would have been fun to see! Either way thanks for the chance to participate. Would love a remath too.
I played my last StarCraft match like 5 years ago, but still constantly watching uthermals matches and challenges because his strategy mindset and kindness is true inspiration where you can really learn a lot for yourself. Love your content and your humanity. Thank you for this Maybe I would participate in a future challenge where is looking for old veterans of broodwar ✌️😁
I would love to see 1v10 with no rules minus worker rush but everything on your side costs half. (Mineral + Gas, supply stays the same) since it allows you to punch up much harder while still keeping the numbers advantage the bronze players have
I think against the reapers in game 2 if you had a bunker by your mineral line with 4 marines in it you might have honestly be okay. It probably would have dealt with them all without any micro needed on your part. Essentially embrace the low APM bronze strats to counter the bronzes 😂
"There's no way he had that many minerals... Or did he just macro like an absolute freaking god?" That was me. The bank and supply were real, but failing to trade out and spend it is not really God-tier macro. 😂
your 2v2 and teams stuff is pretty cool! How about Marc + 1 team mate vs 10 bronze. Your team mate starts at bronze and climbs in rank with each loss. So naturally your silver team mate is me, then it climbs up to Serral, I'm sure he'd join for the challenge. or maybe Scarlet
I've never played Starcraft before. But I love watching Uthermal. This man may make me pick up the game just so that I can be a bronze league player and face him in this challenge 😂
If you rematch, here's the answer: same rules as before (no cap ships; no rush 5 min), + one global "Marc-forcefield" -- once per match you can /all chat "Marc forcefield" and all opponents must pull any unsieged units a half-screen away from any of your buildings. The forcefield can last for longer and longer each match. E.g. match 1 - 1 min forcefield; match 2 - 2 min forcefield. match 3 - 3 min forcefield. this allows you to 1). macro to respond to new unit comps (build 2 ghost academies for example if a zerg surprises you with a dozen lurkers) 2). extend match lengths so that you'll have 16 or 20 min matches instead of 8 or 12 min matches and 3). have a clear vision for the "new rules" with each match (instead of coming up with off-the-cuff rules each match, this is simple....."no cap ships" "no rush 5 min" "global forcefield 1min +1min / match loss". Theoeretically, you'd win 100/100 times with a 20 min forcefield (You can attack them and htey can't attack you...they just sort of die), and you'd lose 99/100 matches with a 1min forcefield........somewhere inbetween is the sweetspot, my guess is a "4-min forcefield" will be the magic number for excellent matches and a 50% win rate.
I for one, want a rematch but with changes. And here's what i think needs to change: 1. Make it a 2v10 or 2v12, as i noticed even though you can do pretty well early on, once all the surviving players get an attacking force together you always got ended because theres too much thing you need to pay attention to between your reapers out in the map needing constant micro and the nyduses/drops in your mineral lines also needing attention, you just cant be at two places at the same time while your opposition can absolutely be at 10 different places at the same time if allowed to, i want to see the odds evened out and the result can go either way 2. Alternatively make it a 10/12 player FFA but theres no rank restriction on the participants so there can be any numbers of bronze to gm players but they dont come at you all at once as they need to fight each other too, give the bronze players a handicap such as no attacking the bronze players until the 5 mins mark or something and let the chaos ensues
man, that was sooo entertaining to watch! I know you but i think it's the first time I've watched one of your videos. Keep and advance the series, please!
I think you could add mineral/gas pickups on map that only you can pick up. That way you will have some additional income to offset just brutal amount of players. But instead of just starting with extra mineral amount, you would not be able just instakill all players on begining, because you will get this extra resources not in one batch. And this will require a little bit of additional micro for you, what can help bronze players to not die this easly. Also possible just to give max minerals only on your base. And incresed supply cup. Like, you obviously should have some macro handicaps/increased max army cap just to offset what will going on in midgame/lategame. For me it will be just cool to watch sheer amount of multitasking you do to deal with all this players in later stages.
or you could possible change map completely and add some special place where this pickups would spawn periodically. And bronze players would try to defend this place from you)
Man, your content is so much fun and always gives me good vibes which is so desperately needed when most (social) media is all out negativity and crises.
I don't know if this is possible, but here is a twist for you: what if it's still 1 v 10, but you have multiple people controlling your player, so one can micro base, other micro one harassment squad and so on.
That was fun, and good job all around! Your direct neighbor, ironically, may be the biggest factor. If he plays normal, that's a free kill. But if he pulls off a good defense as happened in that last game, or if he purely does some annoying blocks or the like, he could delay you so much that your game may be lost afterwards?
Next time make a sensor tower! There's no situation where it's more useful than when multiple attacks are coming from different angles, and it's guaranteed
I am tempted to arrange a Thue vs 11 Bronze Players. Just to make uThermal's challenge no longer the hardest. I would lose, but it would still be a harder challenge!
That was very fun to watch haha. I feel that the reaper rush is definitely not the way to go though because economic damage is pretty useless when they can all send minerals to that guy.
The problem with the last game by saying 5 min no rush, you actually gave the Bronze players a timing push that they wouldn't have co-ordinated otherwise.
I feel like forcing them to not attack for the first 5 minutes actually helped them lol. Forced them to play more defensively and tech instead of going for easily defend-able attacks with small waves of units early that self-crippled their economies.
If only one of them took lead and said all send a worker to proxy units near your base, 18 zlots lings and marines at 2 to three minutes, or all air and attack at 5 minutes, would be easy for them. Or a couple cannon rushes and pylon blocking your wall to buy them all time.
Suggestions for next challenge: - 2 pros vs 10 bronze - The pros get a double height ramp base for easier defense - No capital ships/swarm host (BC, Carrier, Mothership, Brood Lord, Swarm Host) - No worker rush
Make a rematch with a map made for it. Every subsequent match from now on will have your neighbor building a bunker in their mineral line. Also be vs 10 players; but make it so the map limits the possibility for more than 1 base for them. Balance it that way. Not through arbitrary rules.
marc madness 2.0 should be a map where Uthermal's position is much more defensible - designed to give an edge over other base positions so it becomes like a siege and gives him a fighting chance in the early-mid game
Should there be a rematch? 👀
yes!
8 or 9 vs uthermal
yes
I want to see a rematch, but what if you replace the "can't attack me in the first 5 minutes" rule with "you can't build static defense in allied bases"? As if they wouldn't already have 800 minerals at this point.
of course it does mr bronze propaganda
LMAO SO TRUE HAHAHA, most balsa leaguers have 5000 spare minerals, one broken down depot, and a full queue of marines on a reactor with zero supply

This video is the embodiment of the concept of action economy. Even with the huge disparity in experience and skill, there's just too much stuff to deal with at once.
Everytime he encounters a unit: “this wont do the trick against reapers”… hmm, balance.
"Many spiders may tie down a lion" - Ethiopian proverb
We need this but all of the Bronze players MUST play Zerg. Let's get a last holdout scenario going!
22:08 Bold of you to assume a spire meant Broodlords and not "mass mutas" from a Bronze player.
That was fun! Instead of a rematch with new limitations I'd like to see a rematch with no limitations but less players. Reduce the number of players each time you lose so we can see how many Bronze Players it takes to beat a Grandmaster.
Thanks for the video :)
Loved the mention of the 11 Mutalisks that could have been me !
No bronze plays SH Nyduss
hollywood representation of raynor vs the dominion, protoss and zerg
Is it possible for you to play something like a chess simul? Like, play two 1v1s against different opponents at the same time? Say, two computers or vms, a copy of sc2 on each, and either two keyboards, two mice, and a swivel chair; or some other way of switching input between the two (powertoys, kvm switch, vm tools, or whatever)?
They need to have one guy make a ring of sensor towers around your bases, and another with mutas to kill anything except a full army move out
I’m so glad he let the diamond player put his kid in the chair and coach him 😂 that way too funny and wholesome
Thank you for this
Maybe I would participate in a future challenge where is looking for old veterans of broodwar ✌️😁
I would love to see 1v10 with no rules minus worker rush but everything on your side costs half. (Mineral + Gas, supply stays the same) since it allows you to punch up much harder while still keeping the numbers advantage the bronze players have
this was a banger. Definitely want to see this challenge with either zerg/protoss as your race
Or did he just macro like an absolute freaking god?"
That was me. The bank and supply were real, but failing to trade out and spend it is not really God-tier macro. 😂
get Harstem to be your teamate against 9
I think 2v12 is already good enough for the GMs no? Basically makes it a 1v6 in a sense.
Sounds sweet
Too ez i think, however, 2 pros in archon vs 10.. now we're talking
Do a rematch where each bronze league player starts with half the workers
Uthermal sees any enemy unit
Yea that's not gonna be enough to kill my reapers.
My people!
your 2v2 and teams stuff is pretty cool!
How about Marc + 1 team mate vs 10 bronze. Your team mate starts at bronze and climbs in rank with each loss. So naturally your silver team mate is me, then it climbs up to Serral, I'm sure he'd join for the challenge. or maybe Scarlet
What if 2 pro players vs 10 bronze?
That'd be too easy. uThermal + 1 bronze player versus 9 bronze, however, I think would be good!
And he has to make sure the bronze player survives!
One good limitation could be that opponents aren't allowed to send minerals. That way they are truly out of the game when workers get killed.
I've never played Starcraft before. But I love watching Uthermal. This man may make me pick up the game just so that I can be a bronze league player and face him in this challenge 😂
9:15 narrator: _he in fact had a better economy than all of them _*_combined_* hehahahah
the 3rd game your no attack for 5 mins override the no worker rush which means you could have changed that rule.
And here's what i think needs to change:
1. Make it a 2v10 or 2v12, as i noticed even though you can do pretty well early on, once all the surviving players get an attacking force together you always got ended because theres too much thing you need to pay attention to between your reapers out in the map needing constant micro and the nyduses/drops in your mineral lines also needing attention, you just cant be at two places at the same time while your opposition can absolutely be at 10 different places at the same time if allowed to, i want to see the odds evened out and the result can go either way
"Barracks is not that meaningful" - builds two additional ones 5 seconds later
man, that was sooo entertaining to watch!
And bronze players would try to defend this place from you)
No additional rules, just repeat - looks amazing!
Yaaaaay! another community challenge! I'm so keen! Loved the 1v4 silver and the outlast challenge!
Wake up RUclips. There's only 5 bronze players still active, and one of them is me
Me: "Are these really bronze?"
2:58 * builds supply depot right next to Marc's base *
lol
Thank you a congrats for the challenge! I've participated in the first game and had a lot of fun. Waiting for playing again against you! ADIOUS.
I’ve never even won a match against anybody. I would be the perfect bronze player to put in this type of match.
Sending out some love, these are awesome man! I enjoy the challenge matches.
so hype for the rematch! maybe start yourself off with gold minerals and rich vespene
Suggestions for next challenge:
- 2 pros vs 10 bronze
- The pros get a double height ramp base for easier defense
- No capital ships/swarm host (BC, Carrier, Mothership, Brood Lord, Swarm Host)
- No worker rush
Make a rematch with a map made for it. Every subsequent match from now on will have your neighbor building a bunker in their mineral line. Also be vs 10 players; but make it so the map limits the possibility for more than 1 base for them. Balance it that way. Not through arbitrary rules.
Rematch with additional rules (and maybe 2 less opponents??) Cheers Marc!
marc madness 2.0 should be a map where Uthermal's position is much more defensible - designed to give an edge over other base positions so it becomes like a siege and gives him a fighting chance in the early-mid game
