Nothing Fails Like Bible History - Episode 2

- Did Joshua really lead the Israelites into the promised land? Did Joshua conquer the land of Canaan? How much evidence for Joshua in the Bible is there? This week in Nothing Fails Like Bible History, we'll explore the evidence for the Bible by looking at evidence backing up the book of Joshua. We'll compare that to the evidence we have for the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II, who also lived during a similar time period, less than 100 miles from the land of Canaan.

I’m a Christian who is doubting certain things and exploring answers. Your videos are helping me do that. I feel sad for never questioning these things before, but also sad that it really appears you are right. Thank you.
Keep asking questions! A lot of us were/are in your same boat.
I de-converted this year and... I still feel sad for never questioning these things like you said, but at the same time, I keep coming back to "no, it's not that you didn't question. You were blatantly lied to, and this information was withheld. And often, you wouldn't have known what to ask in the first place."
Best of luck. :)
Never stop questioning everything
Same. I deconverted about three years back. It's good to have doubts and be skeptical. Everyone has (how would you buy a car without questions ).
In my experience, I was taught to never question, to take things on faith. When I did ask questions, which shouldn't have been difficult to answer, there were no real responses.
Moving away from this kind of thinking was difficult, however, it's one of the single most important actions I've taken.

What pisses me off is the fact I support my religious friends yet when I get found out to be an atheist I'm suddenly the devil ..and they always expect me to explain my reasons for being an atheist when I don't require them to explain why they believe in fairy tales..
Can relate 100%
I see any interaction as an advantage. Learn street epistemology and help people learn to really examine their thinking. The worst thing is when nobody talks.
But I can relate. I'm often told how proud I am by people who are 100% sure about their unexamined position!
Try to say you are a cultural Christian rather than say you are an Atheist. In Sweden most folk are Atheists, but many like to get wedded in a church and get a christian burial just for it is a part of our culture, if folk ask us why we do not pray or go to church we just say "I do not believe God will punish me for that", you have no obligation to disprove a God as an atheist nor any obligation to talk about religion, you can just say "I do it my own way", "I found the church to be to stressful and did not give me the peace I wanted".
Just do not try to defend atheism by hitting down on religion, do not be that hateful type that say things like "they believe in fairy tales", just keep in mind that they may feel good within that group and that they have the belief not due to the stories but rather for they feel they belong in the group that have those beliefs, a bit like I never tried to get my old friend out of his skater group that still think skateboarding is cool, I just let him be in that group as long as he feel good about it.
I suppose I'm lucky then that I don't have any friends.
What's crazy is when I was a religious Jew NONE of this information was addressed. Of course not but I had no idea
I hope you respect White identities too
None of it was addressed in catholic school either, we were supposed to "blindly" believe in the teachings.
EndJewishSupremacism tf are you on about?
@@W.edgewargames Well, depends. I went to Jesuit highschool and they address many of the issues with the historicity of the bible narrative. My religious studies teacher was a priest who held a Master of Theology degree, and he flat out taught that almost none of the history is verifiable or in any way true. However, he did point out that some of the elements of the narrative are supported by historical evidence, especially the Maccabees (we're Catholics, duh!). I remember when, in a kind of Freudian slip, he pointed out that one of the main reasons the Catholic Church insists on keeping the Maccabees is precisely because most of the non-prophetic parts of the books can be verified historically (although not without bias). He said this in criticism of Martin Luther, but the point stands.
Of cousre we respect your identity
Awesome work! When we were in Egypt our tour guide, a doctorate in comparative religion, showed us psalms that were lifted straight out of the poetry books of the Egyptian pharaohs.

I was a Christian up until the age of 11 when my baby sister became very ill and was taken to hospital and put into intensive care. I prayed to God to help her and make her well again for so many hours I lost count, finally falling asleep with exhaustion only to be awakened in the early hours by my Mother's screams as she returned from the hospital, as my little sister had died.
I recently read in a 100 year old geology book by an author who lived there, that the Nile frequently runs red, as bright as fresh blood, almost annually due to the river's natural erosion of iron oxide deposits further up stream. It's just never mentioned in Sunday Schools.
That explanation, however, does not account for the buckets that were already filled with water turning red as well. Without a doubt, the Egyptians came to theological conclusions about what the Nile turning red meant. God turning the Nile AND the water in the buckets red functions to communicate a theological message and also demonstrate that iron deposits are not the explanation.
@@jamesk9671 Or the bucket part was a lie/elaboration?
@@jamesk9671 how do you know that was true? You don't. How do you know anything in the bible is true? Some things can be verified, but most of it cannot. And many things are plain wrong. Which tells me it can be dismissed entirely. Much more fun literature out there to read.
@@joecoolioness6399 We don't know that most of what we have in our history books is true when it comes to the ancient world. Archaeological evidence can be interpreted in various ways, depending upon the theory used. My archaeology professor often challenged us to consider alternative ways to understand the data rather than assume the old interpretations must be correct. To quote that same professor when talking about undergraduate and graduate education: "What I teach my undergraduates is essentially proven wrong by the most recent analyses, but they need something simple and concrete to start with that they think they can rely upon otherwise they'll never even begin to build a framework for more advanced studies. What I teach on the graduate level is that all of the data needs to be reanalyzed according to the advances in theory and technology that we have achieved, making every conclusion a tentative conclusion."
When you say the Bible says things are wrong, you speak like someone who learned the undergraduate perspective where facts, rather than possible truths, are known about the ancient world. There are possible truths that contradict what the Bible says, but they are always tentative and open to revision based on additional evidence and change of theory. The reality of the state of scholarship is not nearly as strong as you imagine.
I don't deny that there are presently some conflicts between the current view (which is probably not the view that will be established in 40 years) and how the biblical data is interpreted. But it is overstating the case to say the Bible must be wrong based on those conflicts, since the very same conclusions you wish to hold up as absolute facts to contradict the Bible will themselves be contradicted by the next series of ways the data will be interpreted.
@@jamesk9671 or maybe the buckets bit is just pure BS.
The sun standing still in the sky is the perfect example of something that sounds possible to someone who doesn't understand what the sun is, but is absolutely insane if you do know what the sun is. Aside from the fact that it is something physically impossible, if it did happen there would be accounts of it from all humans civilizations on earth, and those don't exist.
Actually I heard this may be possible on a solstice due to our orbits and rotation on our axis etc. The important thing to note is that even if the sun stood still, and we had no explanation, that doesn’t mean god did it!
@@Spino111 It definitely isn't possible. The sun always raises and falls from east to west. Over the course of a year the sun's position slowly drifts more to the north before eventually it gets to it's further point north, then starts drifting back down to the south. The solstice is the day that the sun reaches it's furthest point and then goes the other direction.
If you were look at the sun at the same time, two days in a row normally, it would be a little off set, but if you did it at the solstice, it would be in the same spot. This is what they are referring to, that the sun isn't moving, in a north/south direction and takes the same path two days in row.
The sun absolutely, does not stop however. It still raises from the east(or north east as its at it's further point), and sets west(or north west). No one looking at the sun, would describe the sun as not moving, because it is clearly still moving and the sun also wouldn't be up for an entire day.
You do realize that this is a mericle, right? The laws of physics do not apply here.

Don't confuse having a personal one-on-one loving relationship with God by reading the Bible for yourself with an open heart and by praying to God for yourself, and asking God for wisdom knowledge and understanding of His Word, with the multitude of false religions in the world from Satan, which Satan uses to confuse people so that they will not find and accept the ONE True Living God of the Bible and so they will not accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, because Satan does not want us to have a Savior and be saved, he wants us to be eternally separated from God just like he is.
Believe the truth in the Holy Bibe from God, not the lies in the world from Satan and men. Don't be duped by Satan.
@@slamee100so your satan has more power than your god?
@@cliftongaither6642 Absolutely not, God is the Almighty Creator of all things that exist in the universe, and that includes Satan, but Satan was created good by God but turned evil of his own free will, Satan only has the power and authority that God allows him to have, Satan has to ask God permission to do anything, and Satan was defeated a long time ago when Jesus died and resurrected from the dead, so Satan's time is running out and at the end of this world Satan will be thrown into the lake of fire and never be seen or heard from again and Satan is aware of this, yet still keeps rebelling against God until that time comes.

There is a supposed grave of King Arthur at the ruins of the Glastonbury cathedral (ruined because it was catholic after King Henry VIII converted to Protestantism) and his castle is supposed to be at Tintagel in Cornwall. Maybe without anger. But he does treat all believers as if we are Jerry Falwell clones. There are very good answers to his valid points, but he treats us all as if we are stoooopid. I understand his disdain for the literalist/fundamentalist position. But that is a brand new doctrine that was pushed on Americans beginning in 1909. Throughout that last 2000 years, Christians who weren't shackled to "Every word of the KJV is literally true" knew about all of these historical issues and have very good answers. Holy Koolaid doesn't give these men a second's consideration. It is a false dichotomy.

Thank you for making videos.
I'm still Christian. But here's my personality. I'm extremely gullible. Loyal to a fault. But I seek truth more than anything because I want to know what's real.
I grew up a believer. I'm questioning now. It hurts to say that and I feel like I'm in trouble for writing it out. The truth is so much doesn't add up and I refuse to pretend it's not there just for the sake of tradition and what I've always believed before. This lack of evidence is astounding and I've not heard of this before.
What first had me questioning is Noah's Ark. I want to believe because I'm loyal. But lately I've had my heart broken by some I was loyal to. They really really hurt me, and now I know I can't just expect the world to be kind and full of truth. You have to be very critical and on guard or something will sneak up on you. And Noah's ark, like my friend who swore up and down they were truthful, is inconsistent. And when stories are inconsistent, or lacking evidence that most other stories have, it can't really be believed. Which hurts.
I like to think magic and miracles are out there. Because I want it to be true. But the world is often cruel. It can't be that I'm special and have favor, and others that are kind are not special enough and lose their lives early or experience terrible things.
And I have experienced terrible things. But I wrote it off because God is good?
I have ADHD too. I'm very sensitive and emotional. (Sorry if my writing is all over the place.)
I think there needs to be an understanding that a lot of Christians are similar to me. It's like putting a baby in a lit room and then turning off the light. That may seem silly but I think it's why a lot of people cling to religion. It's hopeful. And it's what theyve been told first. Taking it away is shocking and scary.
I was hurt by a couple of Christians in a group. One of them was actually a pathological liar and would tell stories about me to other people. No matter how crazy they were other people believed her because they heard it from her first. No critical investigation or even hearing from my side and they took it as fact. It ended badly. I left the group. (thankfully she didn't change and now people can see I was telling the truth but I'm already hurt.)
Because of that I refuse to fall for the tricks they did. Its easy to believe in the best sounding thing. But I don't think it's right to. I think even though I may not see the damage, I think there is damage in believing in something that isn't true, just like there was with my friend. So I wanna know what real. Even if I get hurt by it.
At the same time, I think no matter what I may still be inclined to believe in the possibility of a God. Even if it's not sentient or humanoid. Could be a spirit of goodness in the world. I don't know.
Animals are so innocent to me. Wildlife and rivers and trees themselves fill me with wonder. I think there's something even if it's just my human mind conjuring up something. That is beautiful and uplifting about this place. I like to think the world is a bit magical. Maybe I'm childish in that but that I don't mind. It's speculation. But even in my dreaming, I want to know what is true and known. At least to know.
Idk Im dealing with a lot of emotions but I thought I would share. It's complicated.
Done with style.Short and to the point(s).Looking forward to your next vid

@O G I did mention that its a collection (a collection of books)
Also it contains some actual history but it's interpreted theologically in other to fit in with previous mythology. For example it explains how Samaria was a bunch of jerks and God hated them, and that's why God let Assyria invade them.
@@scottlarson1548 Yes, I agree The bible is a historical snapshot into the minds of people living during that period and what their worldview was.
@@scottlarson1548 The dislike of "Samaritans" was based on their practice of Juaism that was uncontminated by Babylonian heresies adopted during the captivity. 6:09 Centuries after the...sorry, did you say “fact?”
Alleged fact of course.
It's meant as a figure of speech, but touché. You have a point.
The idiom is older than the meaning of the word "fact" as you're using it here and as English-speaking people understand it today. (That's pretty much how idioms work.) The idiom is even older than its use in English. It would be equally silly to insist that a "fact" isn't a fact unless someone is supposed to have done it or made it.
Well, "fact" comes from Latin meaning "that which is done or made" (factum, neuter of factus, perfect participle of facere (to do, to make)). In Spanish, "hecho" (the descendant of Latin "factum"/"factus") can mean "deed", "fact", "done", or "made" (e.g. it's not uncommon to see on clothes labels "Hecho en México").

For me, not having the part of the brain strong enough that retains and distributes data easily, I have to rely on a different part- the sheer cold logic of likelihood and relativity. Or in my case, sloppy logic and lazy relativity; sometime as a junior high age I started to notice just how much human behavior of adults matched instinct and survival manipulation, in a world that for the most part didn't require it anymore (depending on where you lived)... and realized that's where most of the misunderstandings between people come from.
While trying to control it all and explain the whole mess, it was easier to make something up and develop some system of punishment and "be good for Sant Claus is always watching" approach than to actually talk to each other about everything, and let others live the way they want to.
Keep up the excellent work my friend. Maybe some day you'll manage to reverse the brainwashing of a great percentage of the masses.

King Arthur etc - was a story told centuries after the time it refered to, of resistance to the invasion by the Anglo-Saxons into Britain. It may be based on dimly remembered and very misunderstood fact:
The Artorian Guard were based at Camelodium. They were one of the powerful mobile reserve forces backing up the Saxon Shore forts that were built by the Roman Empire along the east coast of Britain to protect against incursions by the Anglo-Saxons. With the collapse of Roman power in Britain and the forced retreat and marginalisation of the Romano-British people, heroes that once centuries before could be relied upon became romanticised. A military unit became one man.
Refreshing honesty and reasoning...in this age of nonsense there are still free thinkers
Funny how the Bible mentions Pharaohs ... but never names them.
Because Egyptians kept thorough records and the people that wrote the Bible knew the jig would be up had they given a name. Hell, they don't even mention the Pharoah's daughter that "supposedly" found the basket with Moses in it. Trust me, they were very careful to omit names during that era.
Actually that is not 100% correct. In the book of Kings Josiah
Names Pharaoh Necho by name . In addition, Pharaho Shishak who gave refuge to Jeroboam
@@israteeg752 It's referring to Pharoahs that reigned when all of these Great stories happened:
* Moses being raised by Pharoah, the Exodus.
* Abraham coming to Pharoah and saying Sarah was his sister.
* David being in Pharoah's house and being his right hand man.
* Jesus fleeing to Egypt.
PLEASE NAME THOSE PHAROAHS.
And by the way, you can always insert "Fictional" characters into Historical events. Spiderman mentions New York City and the Twin Towers...does that make Spiderman real??
In the Ben-Hur movie he meets Jesus. Ben-Hur is a known Fictional character. As a matter of fact...so is Jesus. So there you have two Fictional characters in one story...sort of like the Bible. No Moses, No Abraham, No Noah, No Jesus, No Disciples, No Adam & Eve...etc.
@@israteeg752 Besides, because I know you had to Google that, you're bringing up a Pharoah that's mentioned in only around 600 BC. We're talking about Pharoahs from 4,000 to 2,000 BC...when all of these "Great Miracles" were happening.
@@israteeg752 And did it Flood everywhere except Egypt?? Because their records predate the Bible, yet there's no mention of this flood. And besides, their list of Kings date back before and after the "Flood Myth", yet there's no break in the King's list of reigning.
So if there were Pharoahs before the flood and they continued reigning during and after the flood, how can only 8 people after the flood, populate all of Egypt and there not be a 300,000 year gap between Pharoahs??

Excellent series, sir.
Given that the church has been in control of these "documents" for most of their existence, you would think they would have overwhelming documentation of all the attributions and authors. Yet somehow, the opposite seems to be the case. Can you say scam? Sure you can.
Well, no, you're overestimating the power of the Church back then because you're seeing the CURRENT version. Back in the 1st century they were just a bunch of renegade Jews getting kicked out of synagogues and some crazy adventurous Greco-Romans hanging out with Paul. There's no way people in their situation could have kept track of who wrote what and when. That's why ALL the attributions we have now is total bull. We do have better attributions once the Church got organized enough in the 4th century, and for the most part many of their documents since then can be verified from multiple sources in and out. The Old Testament is the one unquestionably "authentic" part of the modern Christian Bible in that we have a competing version in the Jewish Bible and actual archaeologically verifiable versions of every single book (and more) in the Dead Sea Scrolls. We know that part of the bible was already extant long before the Church.
@@andrewsuryali8540 So, are you telling us that the most corrupt (and powerful) mob in human history, had no means or motive to bend and retrofit their super profitable evolving popular fiction stories and destroy any evidence of fraud and plagiarism?
@@LogicAndReason2025 I'm saying that at the time these documents were written, they weren't this super-entity you imagine. The editing came much later, and we know they made a lot of edits because we can trace most of those from the remnants of older versions. We know that those edits only affected the NT because there are other rival groups that maintained their version of the OT and because we have actual versions of the OT back BEFORE Christianity ever existed at hand. We also know they generally hated fan fiction the exact same way megacorporations today do and actively sought to suppress such creations. That's why we only have four official gospels.

The details you describe may be right. I don't really care because either way it doesn't matter. The only "prophecy" in the holy babble is the self-fulfilling kind.
Plus, If any group didn't like different versions of the story, it doesn't mean it's not fiction to begin with. If fact, given the absurdity of the tales, that is the most likely scenario. "Official" BS is still BS.
Just in reference to your comments, *the Bible itself actually proves Jesus is not the Messiah and that the NT was written by Greek speaking gentiles*
The Codex Sinaiticus shows that, in addition to the 14,800+ differences with the current textus receptus of the Bible, *the early versions of the NT did not mention a virgin birth, a cross or a resurrection*
*The Jesus character was created by people ignorant of the geography and culture of the region, using a checklist of Messianic prophecies* - only they used the Greek Septuagint instead of the Masoretic Tanakh and *misunderstood a few key details* like the virgin birth. Which actually refers to a maid (ie girl) - not a virgin.
Because one of the Messianic prophecies says the Messiah will be a descendant of the mythical King David, the (almost certainly Greek-speaking gentile) authors of the NT invented not one, but TWO genealogies showing David to be an ancestor of Jesus.
A few problems: the two genealogies contradict each other and *both trace Jesus’ descent from David through his father Joseph*
This wasn’t too big a problem until the church decided to invent the “virgin birth” narrative.
The only thing the two conflicting genealogies agree on is that Jesus descended from King David through his father Joseph.
Which raises another problem - the Jewish Royal line determined hereditary through matrilineal descent - which one would assume a Jewish person living in Palestine would know.
So even though there are two genealogies meant to prove Jesus is a descendant of David, they appear to have been drawn up by someone unfamiliar with Judaism and Jewish culture.
And - of course - if Jesus is only related to David through his father Joseph, does this not contradict the claim that Mary was a virgin impregnated by god?
Therefore *Jesus is either a descendant of David and the son of Joseph which means he is not the son of god*
OR
*Not a descendant of David because Joseph is not his father, because his father is god and Mary was a virgin*
In either case he’s *not the Messiah*
This idiotic contradiction only exists because *whoever invented the Jesus character was using the Greek Language Septuagint as their source for the prophecies, instead of the Masoretic text which would have been used by a Jew* and totally misunderstood the prophecy about the mother of the Messiah.
Long story short: *the Bible proves Jesus is.not the Messiah prophesied in the Tanakh*
Dude, we get stories twisted around that were told last week.. can you imagine what 700+ years would do?
Jesus sounds like a Stan Lee/Jack Kirby created character..
I assume there was a guy that stood against the elites at that time, and built a following- then got killed for what he stood for. That’s it.
But! Ppl saw the power in using such a story as way to control, and justify atrocities.
If we accept the stories in the "authentic" Pauline epistles of James and Peter and ignore Paul's magical Jesus in heaven, it comes down to: There was a man named Jesus who died sometime in the 30s CE, probably crucified by Romans, and left behind a movement that his brother James inherited. Paul wanted in on the movement and wanted to spread it to non-Jews, but he did some things that James didn't like and the latter started sending out letters everywhere telling his followers not to trust anyone not bearing his letter. That last part, recorded in Paul's tirades, argue for authenticity because there's no reason Paul would write something that discredits himself unless it was actually happening and he had to defend himself. At some point James sent his lieutenant Peter/Cephas to Paul to force him to reconcile and Paul decided to basically bring a huge bribe to Jerusalem in response. This is all we know of the "historical" James, Peter, and James' brother Jesus that can possibly be reconstructed from the most reliable account in the Bible. Not to say the account itself is genuine or unbiased, but it's the closest we can get to the original history.
