I *just* upgraded to 9950x from 5950x 2 weeks ago. I've been using Intel chips in all my computers since 1992 !! 5950x was my first AMD chip ever.. and it was the greatest decision I ever made. Not only did I avoid the entire Intel CPU degradation issue, but AMD absolutely smashed it out the park with all their recent processors. I don't game, I don't even have a graphics card - but for the work I do.. it was like moving to the future. I work in audio (production, mastering, mixing etc.) and it is INTENSIVE on the CPU both single core and multi core processing because an audio track being played back and processed in real-time with effects on can only be done on a single core - overall hundreds of audio tracks can be spread across all cores in multiprocessing, but single tracks must be done all on single core. So, these processors are built almost perfectly for that type of work. The speed, loading time of multi-gigabyte sample libraries into memory, stability, latency, responsiveness - I'm firmly team red now. Enjoy your processor. I wasn't exactly struggling with mine. I do tend to max out and peg the processor at 100% towards the end of finishing a piece of music.. so having a ton of additional processing headroom now is really great to have.
@@trog871 I got sucked in 20 years ago and haven't been able to kick the habit. It's a black hole of money - there's always another upgrade, another plugin, a new set of speakers, acoustic treatment etc... I still produce music, but I do a lot of mastering work as well these days, As chips have gotten better and better over all this time, it's been so exciting being able to add more and more layers and effects in real time and the processor not even break a sweat. I don't think most people really use their CPU to its limit at all - even rendering 3D work is done on the GPU and any CPU implementation only happens when you hit 'GO' at the end. Complex music production projects rev your CPU to it's limit the entire time the project is open and running and stays there. Anyway, having done this for so long - I'm thrilled whenever I upgrade and get to see exactly how much more you can do with just one CPU. The flagship AMD chips are like a leap forward I've never witnessed. An old project that couldn't even be opened before because it overloaded the processor - it would stutter out some defected audio artifact every 5 seconds or so.. New processor, project opens in 3 seconds and sits at 30% usage... waiting for more punishment. 😮
Was using a covid build of 3700x 1660super for all my production work for about four years and recently swapped up to 5950x 3060, and holy shit what a difference. I was on the fence about going to am5 for my work system, but Amazon Day had the 5950x at $290 for a few days so couldn't turn it down. I work with some hefty hefty files, and it handles them like nothing.
HA we're almost same on everything, 3700x is such a beast of a cpu! I remember playing games while on zoom calls during covid. Currently I am maxxing out my x570 TUF mobo because why not? I got 64gb of ram but I want to do 128gb just because. AM4 is a good platform but too bad am5 is so expensive.
Had built a R7 3700x with a RX 5700 XT just a few months before covid, swapped my RX for a RTX 3080 OC 12 GB edition last month... doubting to upgrade to this cpu or a 5900 XT if I can find a bargain. Just to lengthen my PC's lifetime for another 2 years or so before I upgrade it completely when the time is right. Reading your comment pushes me over the fence.:p
@@glendc2945 Currently my motherboard is maxed out! 5950x 16 core 32 threads, ddr4 3200mhz 128 gb ram, 7900XTX, 1000 watt cause why not. I upgraded my 3900X to a 5950X a few months ago when it went on sale for $310 in July (along with upgrading my 5700XT to a 7900 gre). I was able to sell my old parts for around half of what I paid to upgrade. I mainly use Davinci Resolve, Ableton Live and Affinity Photo 2. I've been extremely happy. I built my 3900X PC in 2020 and I'm hoping to get another 3-4 years out of this PC. I never would have guessed I could possibly have that PC for 8 years when I built it. I'm going to try to keep my AM4 platform going as my main PC for as long as possible. I'm using custom pbo and the curve optimizer to get a 4.5 GHz all core and single core boosting right at 5.0 GHz while gaming. I also have the same GN mousepad!
I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 7 1700 to a Ryzen 9 5950x and am very happy with the results. I'm not planning to upgrade to AM5 until I see a significant improvement in performance and power efficiency. For now, I'm satisfied with AM4 and the benefits of my Ryzen 9 5950x.
I have a 5900x and it works wonders for me as a gamer & content creator. I almost got the 5800x3d, but the 5900x was the same price at the time I purchased it. And I figured the 5900x would still be plenty fast enough for me over the previous cpu (ryzen 5 2600). Has to be one of the best purchases I've made in my life. I edit in 1080P 60 fps and and the 5900x renders it over twice real time speed. The 5800s3d prob would give my crazy performance in gaming, but as I make alot of youtube videos I like having the extra cores for video rendering.
It's totally worth it. Does everything I need perfectly. I'm not going to upgrade very soon. Software should decide if you need to upgrade. All my software works perfectly with 5950.
I bought 5950x for 300€. I do mainly gaming but come on, I can't possibly skip an opportunity to get a 16c processor. I have currently 1800x on a x370 motherboard. I went from the beginning of AM4 to the best cpu ever that will be supported on that socket.
@@rwarren58 Yes, BIOS update was required. 5950x has been running great on my Asus CH6 hero. I have only experienced hardships with memory stability, but that was also the case with the old 1800x
I have been thinking about changing my 3800x for a 5059x, when I suddenly discovered that there is the 5900xt, which has the same number of cores and is cheaper, despite having slightly lower performance than the 5059x. Do you have any opinion about this processor to share with us? Thanks for the video, it was very informative.

don't forget 5950x stock compared to a 5950x with pbo enabled then curve optimized maybe ram overclocked to 3766mhz is a totally different beast my 5950x was kinda slow till i tuned her as well
Depends on your workload. Could help if you really need the extra cores. But if all you do is gaming then what you got is probably fine. Like I mentioned, you could look at the 5700X3D if you want better gaming performance on a budget.
No this is specifically a production machine, as my current RX6600 is dramatically too slow to be able to benchmark cpus in games. However I do know that for specifically gaming, the 5800X3D is dramatically faster due to the single CCD and increased cache. So if you want maximum production performance go for the 5950X, if you want maximum gaming performance go for the 5800X3D, or if you want to save some money go for the 5700X3D.
@@trog871 I also have the 5950X. I don't actually do a lot of "production" tasks any more, and find myself gaming more often lately. However, I am quite happy with my system. I know I could get some better gaming performance out of an X3D part, but I enjoy having the extra cores and threads at my disposal anyway. (I never worry about background tasks, opening massive number of browser pages, watching movies, running other tasks, etc. while also gaming.) I was just curious what the actual difference would have been. I do have a decent end video card, having just upgraded from a Radeon 6900 XT to the 7900 XTX.
Nice, yeah this 5950X handles heavy multi tasking like a pro. If you’re interested in gaming comparisons I would recommend looking at GamersNexus benchmarks. Maybe look for something on gamersnexus.net As long as I can maintain at least 30 or 60 fps I’m a happy camper. I do pretty much all my gaming on my Steam Deck OLED these days.
Good video I have a regular 5800x with the same darck rock cooler, I have a question since you are video editor and using Linux can you encode/decode H265 footage in Davinci resolve for example I have Nvidia 2060s which is fine on W10
I’ve never been able to get resolve working on linux. You need the AMD pro drivers if you’re running an AMD gpu like I am, should work easier if you using a distro that packages the nvidia proprietary drivers by default, however it’s still janky as far as I can tell. Nvidia on linux is still quite rough. So TLDR, I have no idea. If you want to use resolve I would recommend sticking with Windows.
I got one about a week ago cause I’m thinking about editing and streaming for about £250, it’s paired with a 6950XT, I had a 5700x which is now in an old pC paired with a 2070 for my girlfriend to use but thinking maybe using that as a steaming pc too.
