Gabriel is just amazing, different voices, characters, it's theater yet it's genuine and familiar. It was a time when musicians were absolutely on top of their game.
I agree entirely. I love the way PG even sings the part with a caricatured vicar's voice! It reminds me of Dick Emery doing his vicar character on his telly show many, many years ago. Brilliant.
Not mad actually - the song is based on a real life story of warring East London gangs. So not just prog, but social commentary, which they also did on Foxtrot's Get 'Em out by Friday. Great music and great lyrics are timeless and real.

This song has a little bit of everything that makes the band’s early material so unique and compelling: Peter’s detailed lyrics and eccentric performance, Tony’s layered keyboards, Phil’s complex yet controlled drumming, Steve’s understated guitar licks occasionally making their way upfront in the mix, and Mike’s deep, melodic bass playing. Great and fun track from an excellent record
This is probably the song most benefited from the Nick Davis "djent" mixes, all the stuff that happens musically makes more sense, while also adding more guitar licks and new parts done by Peter, it feels more complete. I don't know what mix i've been listening this whole time but its definitely not this one.

The Battle of Epping Forest: many observers (and even the band members themselves) have noted that the song has way too many words...maybe that’s why I like it soooo much!! It’s an English lesson, prog style.
That's one of many reasons why I love this band so much. It's all there. The good and not so good. They rarely compromised their art and they did all this in their 20's. A very misunderstood band and very honest.

I must have played this track several hundred times over the years. I remember buying it on release and sitting bored to f*ck in 3rd year maths class, trying to recite the complete lyrics, again and again. An amazing album, though I think that Foxtrot remains their magnum opus.
48 years later I finally find out why a mate of mine used to call me Liquid Len! Back in the day I never listened to it with headphones good enough to hear every word.
Liquid Len is the alias of Jonathan Smeeton, a British lighting and production designer who was involved with Hawkwind in the 1970's. He also worked with Peter Gabriel, who name-checked him in the song.
Got to see Musical Box perform this in 2018 and was totally blown away. The most energetic performance of the show & the only number I’d not seen PG era clips of. The total surprise of the night! Supper’s Ready was biblical etc, but this was the song we talked about on the drive home.

So brilliant and innovative. Completely of it's time and so superior to the inane stuff they churned out after the Wind and Wuthering LP, when they decided to become pop musicians. Art for art's sake and money for God's sake as they say.
This is Genesis at it's very best. The ideal time to play it is on a sunny summer's afternoon. Open the window and blast it out to everyone in your immediate vicinity, that's what i believe in doing.

I grew up in the 80's and only had the naff eighties Genesis to go by. I'm still not sold on all their "prog adventures", but this album, 'A Trick Of The Tail', 'Foxtrot' have some great songs on them with songwriting that puts today's "Artist's" efforts in the shade.
It's an honest shame they never hit up Genesis to do their music earlier. Phil Collins on tarzan proves it otherwise, while the backing track is a bit dated, Collins' voice is really great for that movie.
This song is super underrated. I honestly like it much more than Firth of Fifth. It's so weird and eccentric and very British yet super interesting musically and lyrically.
The end of this song is so classic of the Genesis style! 🥁❤️🎧
Gabriel is just amazing, different voices, characters, it's theater yet it's genuine and familiar. It was a time when musicians were absolutely on top of their game.
I have to say, it is the only track on the album which presented something new. All of the others were places they had been before.
Gabriel es un genio!!!
Brilliant
It’s like a Theater in a Dream. See what I did there?
this music/song is without discussions one of the best they ever writen, all are perfect, but Phill Collins on drums is out of this world

This is the most British song in existence
Just narrowly beats out Let’s Eat (Real Soon) by Hatfield and The North
Lazing on a Sunday afternoon by Queen
Waterloo Sunset?
English, actually.
More like (lazing on a) Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks. But yeah, Selling England By The Pound blows all of that out of the pond.
"There's no one left alive, it must be a draw"... "So the black cap barons toss a coin to settle the score." One of my all-time favorite lyrics.
Hardly any rock music reduces me to tears. Genesis (THIS line-up), achieved such quality and depth of expression it gets me every time.
Perfection.
They just kept getting better and better. They couldn't go no further after The Lamb.
Completely Mad , Completely Brilliant.

I know it's almost impossible... But I would like the battle of epping forest will be played in the upcoming tour...
Phil Collins never sang it. Don't think he wanna learn that damn long text at his age after all those decades.
@@fillgollinsdergroarticheme8442 As I mentioned, I am aware it's almost impossible.
You know it's a prog rock epic when youtube ads kick in during the song, not before or after it😅
This version is hot😊😊😊😊😊
Super incredible super amazing so talented legends thanku love an god bless x
This is the favourit song of my dead son
Was enjoying it until 2 commercial breaks
Phil Collins plays like a street kid that grew up in Epping Forest, but no one lives in Epping Forest.Isaw a very large mushroom. It was alive.
Phil Collins is such an amazing drummer - one of the best ever.
Best drumming ever
There best album?
Their
Here comes Harold Demure from Art and Litterature 😂
Eternal masterpiece.
Reminds me a bit of Disney's Robin Hood
It's an honest shame they never hit up Genesis to do their music earlier. Phil Collins on tarzan proves it otherwise, while the backing track is a bit dated, Collins' voice is really great for that movie.
@@jojobizadTRASH Right
Saw that show live in STL STL Kiel Auditorium only 2,000 or 3,000 attended best most unusual show I have ever seen
This song is super underrated. I honestly like it much more than Firth of Fifth. It's so weird and eccentric and very British yet super interesting musically and lyrically.
Tullio
So crazy song! 🥁🎸🥁🎧
What is happening with Paul Froggatt in the live chat lol
quando i Genesis erano sratosferici..
How many years has it been since I heard this song? Peter is a grate singer, I think once again
This song is absolutely Lamb lies down!
6:51 You are rrRRABIN (trevor) :-))
I believe this is the best song Genesis ever did. Peter was amazing. They all were amazing. Phil!!!
Tony, Steve, Mike. Man you can't get better musicians together in a band anywhere. England rules!
this has always been my favorite, lately the colony of slippermen has been giving it a run for it's money though hehe.
Billy Wright's? Wolverhampton.
Best song Genesis ever did!
Phil is insanely good!
WOW! AMAZINGLY DONE! 💘 LOVE AND BLESSINGS HAZEL CALIFORNIA...

#OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic
Great Scott
Not really a fan of this song. I much prefer their other story song Get em out by friday but this song offers a lot more musically
Just listen to this on headphones! It is soooo fucking amazingly clever in every way possible. Their best composition by a long mile.
Wonder if the young kids like this music or just silver tops
8:51 how is the music still playing? lol
GENIAL
Genesis was the coolest band back in High School. But as hard as I tried I never liked them. Just too weird.. Loved Gabriel when he went solo though!
Crazy this was released in 73.
Sounds futuristic af
