As an architect, i had to try to develop a "flat" roof design, like you see on more modern buildings. I found that if you hybridize a flat roof and what resembles a waffle slab(real thing!), you can make the appearance of a flat roof by only using interior corner roof pieces in a square pattern.
This way it still acts as a functional roof, protecting from rain and giving the shelter effect, but still has the appearance of a flat roof. Im pleased with the turnout"

The roof was a pain to make properly, especially the higher i went, trying not to have little gaps while also not making the clipping look bad. Was a challenge for sure but it worked out! Build the roof you want. You can always add/remove ladders. I keep mine permanently on the roof - destroy the ones going up from ground.
ALSO: 45 degree roofs are EASY to walk on without ladders. Simply snap horizontal beams on the "undersides" of where roof tiles attach. Now you can walk on roof.

    • @quicksandriggs
      @quicksandriggs  3 года назад +2

I'll start looking into foundation and staircase information.
I'd love to see pvp implemented more in the game, and not neccesarrily just for goofing off between friends, but actually allowing your dedicated server to be pvp enabled permanently so you can have attacks and raid against each other or have multiple groups racing to take down bosses first in order to advance ages. I am not a fan of griefers, and it is always hard to implement non griefing pvp into a survival game, but I love the thrill and challenge of player vs player in a healthy setting and environment. I believe games like Age of Conan and original Ultima Online had the best pvp systems because there was no toggle or dedicated servers, which means you have more people just playing the game and pvping when the moment called for it. Anytime a game dedicates areas, times or servers to pvp, you can guarantee its just going to pull out all the griefers.

Rain is going vertically straight down. So whenever there is roofing above stuff/you, then it's safe from water damage.
Flooring panels do NOT protect against water.

Lol, I've done a great many things wrong in this game so far! Glad it helped!

Putting a roof on my giant circular portal hub is taking days and I'm noticing the clipping and snapping is getting tough the higher I go, might just scrap it. I flew too close to the sun... Either way, thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I prefer octagonal over circular because of that, although it has its own problems! Hopefully you get something worked out!

You could do a full 16-angle circle at the base, and then at some point nearer the center, transition it into a octogonal by skipping every other roof & angle.
Worth pointing out, circular roofs in valheim work better I think with a Clerestory Roof step up, which is a perfect time to reduce the number of angles you're using by half. If you window the clerestory step, it gives you ventilation for your fires/braziers.
Also a "spiraling roof" shape can disguise the clipping issues of a circular build as intentional design elements.

Are you a contractor or an architect in real life? Your explanation is quite technical but accurate.

I'm 38 years old and for the first time I'm starting to realize why I should've paid attention in math and it's all because of base building in Valheim. 😆

did not know that beams make no difference. saved me a lot of chopping trees.

Not exactly true, they can in theory make a difference. The stability system is a simple check for path to ground or "foundation". The game will run a check on each individual piece to see the closest path it has to a blue piece. Core beams and iron beams have higher values and stay blue longer, allowing you to create taller structures. Depending on design the angled beams could in theory provide a shorter path to the ground. Typically they're used in conjuction with roofs, so they don't make a difference because they'd share the same distance as roofs from the nearest blue piece. But if for example you use a 45 degree beam to create a shorter path to the ground, like connecting the roof piece to a vertical beam for example, it could create stability.
Also worth mentioning angled beams can be used in substitute for roof pieces as well. They act as shelter and block rain. Angled beams also do not weather

@@kristopherdickson6606 Very good points! I am touching on the fact that they can cut sharper angles and help with stability in a video about framing and foundations!

Dude, now I finally understand why there is a 26 degree roof...cause arctan(1/2) is about 26 degrees...

Best tip for anyone who is annoyed to the ragequitting by building roof is to calculate integrity and amount of tiles implied to roof BEFORE building a single piece of roof.

How do I get the log poles instead of the weaker beams I start with? I'm new to the game and have no idea how to get the log poles.
I'm frustrated because I'm limited on how I build my starter base since I don't have these larger log poles.

Once you loot core wood the recipe should unlock, you can find core wood in the Black Forest from pine trees.
