Three Levels of Sundial 🕗 Valheim Time Keeping

- This video is all abut Sundials and telling the time in Valheim. I experimented with the concept for way longer than any one should and here is the result.
To build accurate sundial from the end of the clip, Copy and Paste on signs from left to right. Works for semicircle made from 2 m beams (1 m at the ends), 1 sign every meter.

"Goes down south - unlike real life" - I mean, if you're anywhere on the northern hemisphere, it does in real life too. Your sundials are great though, I really have to get one set up in my game soon!
I was just about to comment this, in the northern hemisphere the sun goes across the southern sky during the day. In fact during winter the sun is primarily in the south as it rises in the southeast and sets in the southwest because of the change in earth's axial tilt :)
TFW you accidentally reveal you live near or south of the equator
@@bgiv2010 Probably near since it would be the same in reverse far enough South
And especially in the far north like what I would imagine Valheim would be set in with Vikings and such.
theres nothing like those south facing driveways in snowy states
1:44 If you're in the Northern hemisphere the sun does indeed go to the south at noon. So it is exactly like real life since the setting of Valheim is based on the northern hemisphere.
Exactly what I was about to say. Only near the equator does the sun ever sit directly overhead. Also, hovers much closer to the southern horizon in the winter with the tilt of the Earth making it far away, and that's actually why the day is shorter. Same goes in reverse for the Southern Hemisphere
@@alurkingislander By that logic, Valheim takes place extremely far north in its hemisphere, but during the summer for a much longer day, which would then be the only reason it's not deathly cold during the day.
@@ShawnPattonC that checks out, since scandinavia is relatively far north. i'm not super familiar with valheim, but from what i've heard, it'd make sense that it takes place in that area or a fictional equivalent
@@ShawnPattonC It's a game set in the Viking mythology. They were called Norsemen for a reason.
@@XMaster340 Yes, we all know that. I'm just saying that it is super extra north, and that the orbital mechanics in that case are consistent with what we see in game.
I've never seen a RUclipsr come out swinging like you. Every video has been fire!
Maybe I will, for the first time, ring the bell
Ring the bell? You wouldn’t….
That "It's time to subscribe" was smooth af, gotta admit
Hmm. Contemplating a small decorative farm/garden in a half circle shape with benches along the wall using a pine tree as the pole to measure the time. It would integrate with the base and look nice, but also serve a function. I know, a pine tree sways, but who needs to be accurate when you can be fancy? XD
I'll see you at 2 turnips past 4 carrots.😂
The northern hemisphere has entered the chat (where the sun stays in the south during winter)
Tks
It stays on the south always... because its the northern hemisphere...
@@iagomiguez5784arctic summer be so loud
@@iagomiguez5784it would be pretty odd if the sun rose in the south only to go up and straight back down…
Brilliant and nerdy as hell, I love it. Definitely building this.
Man, you -are -crazy. That is awesome. Especally that you did all the work and let us have the fun with it. Cool.
Thanks for the inspiration, this was great! I created my own twist and added colors to mine with green on the left and red on the right. It also makes the signs easier to read using bright colors. If anyone is interested, these are the codes I thought looked best:

Really cool build! Saving your colour palette for replicating, thanks for sharing!
That's great, I didnt find the energy to play around with the colors and sizes, but i figured there must be something there. I love that you did this
damn , that is some next level video right there
I could have stopped watching at 2 min into this video, but I love this shit, well done!
Revealing the science of time to the Viking population. Hes a madman, a madman.
That's quality nerdy content here!
dude this was one of the coolest tutorials ever idk why
We love the perfection!
Easy subscribe and some insane inspiration, not to mention the effort applied to not only make a great video but also allow anyone the ease of recreating the dials themselves, now to go watch more of your channel haha
I love your valheim dream house. I built it on my world.sundial is also awesome
This is a phenomenal video for how small your channel is. Clearly a lot of effort went into it, and that hasn't gone unnoticed. :)
thanks but i got thousands of subscribers buddy, not that small ok?
How has this never occurred to me after this many hours of Valheim? lol - super cool... great vid!
Your are a incredible beast. For both editing and topics of your videos.
And I love this thinking room !
this is some damn fine content, the factory idea is equally great. I haven't played valheim in a bit but you're giving me an itch to play again.
I'm convinced this is one of the best RUclips videos ever made.
Everything is just spot on. The humor, the dedication, the amount of work he puts in, all presented in a digestable and non-bloated way, easiest sub of my life
@@NeverMind353 isn't it
Was so excited to see a new video- will make sundial after I finish my house. Only had valheim a week and because if you I ventured into the swamp yesterday and found 10 iron for my house based on your house. Your videos are awesome and funny- Love the viking thinking chair. Yesterday I leveled earth ( thanks for explaining how to do that) and laid out my 12 x 12 wood base. My new favourite youtube channel. Please keep up the good ideas and humour.
Okay ngl, its refreshing to see your content as it's so creative ~ just when I thought I'd seen everything in Valheim
Really appreciate the amount of time you've put into this, keep it up!
insane work, great ideas, I love it! good job and thanks for the effort and help
My main base is a big black marble squat circular tower and I never found a use for the huge circular roof, but now I have the perfect use, thanks!
Very good video! I like that it's in depth and with very good animations, examples and research :)
You, sir, are a freaking hero. Thank you for blowing my mind with this!
Love the sundial ideas, but I gotta admit, very nice editings throughout the video, man. Nice job
Woah this video came out just in time for me to contemplate building a sundial in my Valheim world! Subbed.
Good job man! I'm glad others are on the sundial
Your videos are killer dude! Excellent work. Its difficult to break through with new and interesting topics like you have with a game thats been around for several years.
Great inspiration brother, keep it up!
Thank you! I've seen a whole bunch of your content. The videos breaking down all the weapons, and shields and armor were great, I learned a lot.
thanks man. Keep creating killer videos!@@CrateOfBananas
great deadpan delivery on your jokes, subbed!
god I love this community, excellent video Sir!
This was insane in the very best way. Definitely going into my Go To folder for Valheim.
Damn was excited to binge your content but only 4 vids. More building stuff like this would be awesome. Thank you, have a good one!
Wow! It's really awesome, never saw things like this in the games before
Bro, greetings from Colombia. I think you have an incredible potential to create content of this amazing game. Keep going in that way you will go so far my friend. New sub here! 👏🏻🔥
I don't mind about measuring time inside of Valheim, but your ideas is impressive! Well done.
I really did not expect such a scientific guide for sundials! Great work!
Amazing editing, great commentary, and even giving out a cheat sheet for people wanting to make their own. Keep up the awesome work :)
Man, you are becoming one of my favorites valheim content creators!
This is really cool, also loved the humor in the video!
A portal room would be sick to see as well
This is awesome. I'm going to try this out right away. Thanks!
Just finished the video, this was crazy actually, you legend
Nice! Love the new video - I didn't even know sundials were a thing in Valheim, I'll have to build one now!!!
Damn dude. You deserve way more subs. This is awesome
we all get the subs we deserve in the end
@@CrateOfBananas Woah, real.
Wow this is incredible information. Thanks making this video!
wow! i didin't expect to find so much research when i first clicked on the video, good job!
This is quality youtube. Your building videos are giving me the boost I need to get over my hatred of how the hoe functions in this game so I can get into the actual rewarding part.
Note IronGate is in the northern hemisphere, so for them, the majority of the wintertime, the midday sun is south.
Actually, the sun is in the south for the entirety of the year when you live in Scandinavia, and IronGate is based in Sweden. It's definitely further south in the winter than in the summer, though.
This was very impressive, man. I've used the rudimentary sundial in my games before but never anything as precise as what you've done here. Seriously, nice work and thanks for the video.
Your videos are so incredible that I was stunned when I saw you only had 4 of them! Keep up the great work dude, if you're looking for suggestions for a new video, some sort of "niche building tips" video could be really good. Things similar to the trick you used with the door to position that beam.
genuinely impressed. subbed.
subbed just for the amount of effort you put in to this is ridiculous i don't even really play valhiem that much anymore but damn
I know, I really have too much time on my hands
Nice video! 👍🏻 I appreciate all the effort that you put into this 😅
Dude! You are mvp! This would be great to test when Ashlands will be out.
Awesome guide, awesome builds, awesome vid
Bloody amazing! Thanks for the idea!
Id never heard of this game, but your video has inspired me to try it out.
haven't even thought about that, thx for the idea, bud
i havent even played valheim in like 2 years but this video slaps
Not so sure I wanna be seen in Valhalla just yet, but 100% want to make your copy & paste sun dial, because I'm a lazy viking! Thank you yet again for an incredibly well thought out video. We can all see how much time (pun intended) and effort you put into this.
Great video as always
Your assumption that the whole world that WE live in is in the Northern Hemisphere made me smile....
You put a lot of effort into this. Thanks
Amazing video man earned a subscriber for the laughs throughout the video😂
This is epic! Thanks dude!
I've built all three things so far -- the house, the factory, and now the sundial. Looking forward to more stuff!
dude your crazy. this is awesome and deserves a sub and like!
dude your one liners, and little jokes that arent even verbal just on visual on the screen like "pe..." on your portal video, crack me up!
Sellar, absolutely stellar!
Every Viking needs this
bro i am rolling this content is refreshing af 😂
Your videos are so good man.
Well done!
Super sweet dial, and incredibly entertaining! You've earned a like and sub from me, good sir!
Thats the smoothest "Time to subscribe" in all RUclips
The best sundial is not a tree log, but a tree being the sundial. Pine tree is the best for the job.
In northern parts of the world, the sun actually goes from SE, S, SW during the day in winter. So a sun in the southern sky is not totally unheard of.
you have done good work here
Thank you for providing the text, thats super nice!😊
I've said this once before, but bro your videos are amazing!! Please keep them coming! And when is the discord server coming.... nudge nudge
Another fantastic video, Crate! I'm embarrassed to say that I'll probably be building the big one!
"It goes down south, unlike in real life" - a southern hemisphere resident.
No sundial! That's the most handy tip I heard in a long time, thank you :D
best valheim video ive ever seen
This has been on my mind since the beginning of our no map (so no mini map) community server playthrough, but non of us ever got around doing one. Now with all this sweet info we definitely need to do it! Thanks!
how will you know the orient it tho?
@@CrateOfBananas Sun comes up in the east. Run to a body of water right as you get out of bed, should normally see a nice beam of sunlight in the water that can be easily used to orient some building piece east, or click 4 times counter clockwise to have a piece orient north.
I'm probably not going to build a sundial, but this did inspire me to build an outhouse
Another banger video!
I make a south-facing vertical wall up on the roof of the base where everyone can see it with a horizontal beam coming out of the middle. I put a sign that says "morning" on the west side of the wall and a sign that says "evening" on the east side.
Very educational and well explained
Excellent video, easy sub!
Awsome job my friend
Wow, real passion
8:21 this is so perfect 😭
Great work!
ok that sub thing got me. good job. subbed and liked
Thank you! I need these solar/lunar clock for my best base, in prepatation for ashlands ;)
And now I feel the urge to build a sundial within a structure (temple, castle) or perhaps build a sundial Tower… Time Tower !
Thanks for all the inspiration
tower sounds great
