When Building on the edge of a swamp biome there is never a dull moment. Also I really don’t like going too deep on my trenches as I have died more times from falling than adventuring.
Great information. I have taken a completely different approach. I start with a moat at least 20 meters away from my buildings, making it only 2 meters wide and take it down to the water line and if possible, deep enough into the water to make you swim. Swimming mobs can't climb a sheer rock face and save the stones for later. This will protect your base from all the beginning raids. As soon as you unlock the hoe, use it to build a single width stone wall on the side that has your base, 5 raises or clicks high, leaving only a single space wide intermittently for you to be able to go thru so you can jump across the moat. If you want, you can widen the moat to 4 meters although its not needed. now your base is protected from almost any raids, at least until you get to the Drakes.
@@quicksandriggs I forgot to add 2 things. 1: I was putting out some covered workbenches to prevent mobs from spawning too close to your base or inside your base. 2: Try to make your base by the ocean, preferably on a piece of land that jets out into the ocean. That way you can potentially eliminate 1,2 or 3 sides of your base to attack.
My understanding is that a moat/raised earth wall is the best combo, at least for your main base because it takes some time, though doable in about a couple of hours for a single workbench radius. At least in my experience the path to the door is completely manageable as it bottlenecks enemies and especially if you have towers or walk along the walls on the sides they'll rarely try to go through the gate, usually hugging the part of the wall closest to you.
@@InfernosReaper Well raised ground is, moats are manageable. They take some time but they usually pay off in the long run. You can cover most needs in terms of base size with 2 or 3 workbench radii and digging that takes around an hour or so and you can do it pretty much right after Eikthyr and pays off throughout the rest of the playthrough. Buildings are more of a time and resource vampire because if you're concerned about aesthetics/durability even a little bit it can get really time consuming. Even a small building can easily take an hour by itself and you need to have them from the get go but you don't get stone until much further down the line and other materials even later than that. Getting through the slog that Bronze is and building out of wood most of your base takes a long time and you're more or less stuck with that unless you're willing to tear everything down when you get access to stone or iron reinforcements later down. So from this I imagine the idea setup is an 8M deep moat spaced at least 6M from an Earth wall raised up 8M the only problem is finding a good area big enough where the terrain is mostly level so the bedroock is not uneven
Deathsquitos need a fix. I don't think they should be able to damage buildings. I lost a karve yesterday that was parked inside a stone fortified dock. It just flew around hitting the ship until it was destroyed. They have also destroyed a karve I was sailing in that was way off-shore. I could not use a mele weapon because I would hit the ship myself. Shooting was next to impossible, as the ship was bobbing up and down. So essentially, there was no practical way to defend the ship. Two squitos destroyed the ship with about four hits each. Needs a fix.
Use melee for deathsquitos! Parry right when it reaches you and swing. They'll never be able to hit you except a sneak poke but once you get bonemass ability and serpent stew/lox meat pie/fish wraps or blood pudding....you'll just beat the crap out of entire villages in the plains.
@@johnirby8847 I usually deal with deathsquitos by punching them barehanded. I have no issue fighting deathsquitos. My point was when on a boat they aren't hitting me, they are attacking the boat, and if I use mele, I also hit the boat.
Can you just destroy your ship with your hammer and rebuild it when you want to set sail? I know it looks cool floating in the water and all but you could leave a chest right there with all the components and build when you want to set sail.
@@Storam3 Hammer won't destroy it, you'd have to attack it until it breaks. And depending on how close you are to shore, you risk losing some of the materials.
I'm having trouble with death squitos. I have my farm walled off in plains, but the occasional bug gets through or around somehow, what is recommended to stop them?
Back when I made this video I am pretty sure Deathsquitos couldn't make it through any opening that you couldn't. So any window sized openings were safe, but if a door was left open they'd make it through. When I get time I will look into this again and let you know.
The real problem is, trying to get ground walls that smooth. I have never been able to do this as of yet. Nowhere even close to that good. Idk how you get it that smooth to prevent them walking on it. Its so hard.
It takes quite a bit of pick work to get it right. I also believe the terrain comes out smoother when you dig or ground wall in the 4 cardinal directions (N, S, E & W) as opposed to (NW, SW, NE & SE) Not entirely sure that is correct, but it might be worth testing slightly different directions when you make your next one.
tl,dr; 6 meters away from trench is always safe to build. Deepth of trench doenst have that much effect. On 4 meter deepth ranged have a hard angel to throw or shot and after 7 meter deepth the safe distance is after 2 meter instead of 6. I personally used 10 meters between my trench and base and have that space for growing carrots. They may get destroyed but its not a big loss.
So. What would be the optimal solution if I saaaaay slapped my base onto the coast? I mean, trolls don't swim but they can walk quite far out. And the rest can swim.
I’d try stone walls placed as deep as you can. Not sure how well it’ll work, but unfortunately we cannot dig a trench down there and I assume you wouldn’t want to ruin the coastal view with a ground wall.
Great info, thanks for doing this. Do you know if there is a difference in fps between an equivalent moat and wall? I'd like to build a defence that is most effective for least fps hit.
I'm glad it helped! Unfortunately I don't know if there is a difference, I haven't had any issues with lag or fps drops at all, sorry I can't be much help in that area...
I have not tried the stone on top. But I have done a video on stone wall durability and how fast trolls destroy stone walls. So you could put together a pretty good defense using each of the different parts.
When you tested this you mentioned that the trolls with a log have a range of 6 meters and you have to build at 8 meters away. Would 7 meters suffice, or does it have to be 8?
7 should work, this test was just done with the 2m beams so everything was in those increments. Although, I would be careful with 7 if the ground wall is not perfectly even, he could still potentially hit it.
@@quicksandriggs okay, great to know! I'd love to see this done with those slimes I've been hearing about to avoid having them jump into the base. I had just cleared out a shoreline draugr village and was exploring options to protect it (especially since some other players on the server had recently had issues with troll attacks). I'm thinking a 2m wide, 4m deep moat, with a 2m high wall should have me covered. I'll be building a defensive wall behind it you can shoot from safely.

I raced to dig a ditch while fending off a one star troll.
@@quicksandriggs I was killed after just two bites(bronze armor). I had to set double spike walls to contain that one wolf while digging the ditch. Now the ditch is a bit deep that I couldn't know the level of tameness it's at unless I jump in.
Stone flooring has the same durability as other stone items (1500) so it would take just as good of a beating. But it doesn't cover as much space vertically and takes up more space horizontally (compared to stone walls) so I'm not sure it would be worth it.
Nothing, but if they move to cross a bridge then at least they get funneled to one area. Sometimes they will inadvertently break bridges with their stone throw as well, which will prevent crossing.
moats and walls are ugly.. but necessary... nothing to doabout it. Something that you didn't tell is that if you do any of those too large, meaning, that you get a huge terrain to construct your base, you might have mobs spawning inside. So from this I imagine the idea setup is an 8M deep moat spaced at least 6M from an Earth wall raised up 8M the only problem is finding a good area big enough where the terrain is mostly level so the bedroock is not uneven
That seems like it would be impenetrable, provided you can find a good location!
Thx for this useful test ;)
I'm glad it helped!
I had deathsquitos destroy a boat as well, it was brutal!
Awesome video man. You are to Valheim, what ilmango is to Minecraft imo.
Thank you! I’m glad I could help!
The real problem is, trying to get ground walls that smooth. I have never been able to do this as of yet. Nowhere even close to that good. Idk how you get it that smooth to prevent them walking on it. Its so hard.
It takes quite a bit of pick work to get it right.
I also believe the terrain comes out smoother when you dig or ground wall in the 4 cardinal directions (N, S, E & W) as opposed to (NW, SW, NE & SE)
Not entirely sure that is correct, but it might be worth testing slightly different directions when you make your next one.
Great man :)
tl,dr; 6 meters away from trench is always safe to build.
Carrots are a pretty good idea for that space!
If the monster won't fall to moat, take harpoon and pull him in it :D
Always a good system!
I just made a deep moat and had no issues afterwards in the blackforest😂😂
Nice!
Nice work! Great info :)
Thank you!
can i build a base wall around my base without placing workbenches every few steps?
Unfortunately no, you can remove the benches afterwards for a better look, but you need the workbench to construct.
What is the attack range of an unblocked bolder throw?
I’m not sure, sorry.
Great job. Have experimented with a moat that has stone walls at the top?
Great video! You should have ended with a drake event lol
Thank you! That would've been a great way to end it!
I spent an hour or two building my first wall and moat around my base. Then, I saw the graylings, necks and boar easily climbed over them.
They are all excellent mountain climbers! Until you flatten it.
@@quicksandriggs Encountered my first wolf yesterday and tried to trap it. I lured it(i.e running for my life) to my mountain side FOB. I thought I've raised the base high enough but the wolf was able to climb up an un-flattened spot and entered the room. I trapped it inside but it was destroying the spike walls very quickly. I raced to dig a ditch while fending off a one star troll.
@@dareka9425 Those guys are so fast, and hit buildings surprisingly hard!
@@quicksandriggs I was killed after just two bites(bronze armor). I had to set double spike walls to contain that one wolf while digging the ditch. Now the ditch is a bit deep that I couldn't know the level of tameness it's at unless I jump in.
@@dareka9425 He's gonna be pretty cool to have once he's tamed!
Loxes can push another lox over that small of a wall tho
That Lox stacking can get troublesome!
It's not a branch, it is a Trunk ;p
Good point! From his perspective it's probably more branch like, but it's definitely a trunk when it hits us! :P
Thank u
For sure!
Does all of this still works? Got the game recently and the raid is pretty frustrating.
It should all work still, I haven’t seen any patch notes indicating a change.
@@quicksandriggs thank you, I appreciate the hard work!
@@sandhalp For sure, I am glad the video could help!
Do trolls with more stars have the same ranges?
I have not noticed any starred monsters having more range, but I will check that and let you know.
Yes the 1 and 2 star trolls have the same attack range. Only changes for increased stars that I know of are damage, health and loot drops.
The hoe is a better tool to sharpen the tops and floors of groundwalls
Good to know, thanks!
Hello! Have you found a seed where the main island has all the biomes and the merchant?
I personally have not, sorry.
...great stuff, man...thorough but for the airborne...but good gods, enough with the ground shake...
Yeah, that ground shake from the trolls is ridiculous!
Can you use stone flooring as an effective defense?
Stone flooring has the same durability as other stone items (1500) so it would take just as good of a beating. But it doesn't cover as much space vertically and takes up more space horizontally (compared to stone walls) so I'm not sure it would be worth it.
You rock
Thanks!
What stops the trolls from crossing the mote bridge?
Nothing, but if they move to cross a bridge then at least they get funneled to one area. Sometimes they will inadvertently break bridges with their stone throw as well, which will prevent crossing.
Any idea about Abomination ranges?
Not yet, video editing is going slower than usual while I work on some other real life things. But abomination info will be one of my next videos!
moats and walls are ugly.. but necessary... nothing to doabout it.
Something that you didn't tell is that if you do any of those too large, meaning, that you get a huge terrain to construct your base, you might have mobs spawning inside. That's what happened to me, sadly. I haD to move away and now I'm in the tortuous labor to level the ground on this meadows..
Yeah mobs spawning inside can be annoying! I have so many workbenches that I haven't had that problem yet.
Is item is in ur 7th hot bar slot?
A shield with a red and white paint job.
@@quicksandriggs u can paint stuff?
@@irondragon1246 Only shields. There should be a button at the menu to craft it, that allows you to select a color pattern.
@@quicksandriggs gotcha
I have a problem with the ground changing in spots every time i fix it,changes back
That is strange. Does it do this when you relog or while you are in the area?
@@quicksandriggs Its always like that in a couple spots regusrdless.I flattened out a large area .
@@crenge That's annoying, I wonder what's bugging out those spots.
Man everything just swims around lol
That is definitely a recurring problem in Valheim! Ideally we need the ability to properly build underwater.
Im hitting the swamp and plains now so ive gotten stone and metal unlocked and want to start a castle. Which Biome would you or anyone suggest to build? Just about to kill Bonemass. I have a 3 star wolf farm going and 1 star boars. I will upgrade boars sometime when I'm bored of Hunting Metal and Stone. I have a 3 point area ive built a temp camp with swamp plains and black forest right there in the middle of all 3 zones but have constant fights on all three sides. Not safe at all. Im sure with portals it really doesnt matter once a hub is established I have about 4 portals on my main base that has turned into my farm and breeding ground. Damn Wolves wont shut up! LOL
My main base is always in the meadows, I like the relative peacefulness whenever I'm not adventuring. And like you said, with portals and ships your base doesn't need to be next to any one biome.
@@quicksandriggs Great point Ive just decided where to build maybe something to consider I haven't checked my world yet but how about building at the boss shrines? That way you have one more resource when you want to change your buff you don't have to run there and back everytime? I can build a round trophy room around it and run in and get buff of choice.
@@Storam3 The game won't allow building within a certain radius of the boss trophy shrines, so that might limit the cool build ideas. But being near them is definitely helpful! On the topic of boss shrines though, you can build near their summoning altars! The Elder makes a great underground base, might be something of interest if you haven't seen Firesparks video on it!
@@quicksandriggs does the shrine host an invisible bubble like the trader? I will have to test it. Even if its outside in a courtyard and the build goes around it in someway would be cool. I would make a great video if your interested in checking it out and informing others your videos are good.
@@Storam3 It doesn't host a bubble that I know of, at least not in terms of stopping enemies and combat. It only prohibits building. Using it as a centerpiece courtyard could definitely be cool, I'll have to check that out!
The REAL trollge
I mean is anyone gunna ask how does one get out of the hole?
If you bring wood with you, then you can build platforms to jump up and get out, then just break them once you are out.
This is pretty easy to find out. Though I guess for the more casual gamers, this helps lol
