    Great information. I have taken a completely different approach. I start with a moat at least 20 meters away from my buildings, making it only 2 meters wide and take it down to the water line and if possible, deep enough into the water to make you swim. Swimming mobs can't climb a sheer rock face and save the stones for later. This will protect your base from all the beginning raids. As soon as you unlock the hoe, use it to build a single width stone wall on the side that has your base, 5 raises or clicks high, leaving only a single space wide intermittently for you to be able to go thru so you can jump across the moat. If you want, you can widen the moat to 4 meters although its not needed. now your base is protected from almost any raids, at least until you get to the Drakes.

    • @quicksandriggs
      @quicksandriggs  3 года назад +3

      @@quicksandriggs I forgot to add 2 things. 1: I was putting out some covered workbenches to prevent mobs from spawning too close to your base or inside your base. 2: Try to make your base by the ocean, preferably on a piece of land that jets out into the ocean. That way you can potentially eliminate 1,2 or 3 sides of your base to attack.

    My understanding is that a moat/raised earth wall is the best combo, at least for your main base because it takes some time, though doable in about a couple of hours for a single workbench radius. At least in my experience the path to the door is completely manageable as it bottlenecks enemies and especially if you have towers or walk along the walls on the sides they'll rarely try to go through the gate, usually hugging the part of the wall closest to you.

    • @Theguyunderyourbed22
      @Theguyunderyourbed22 Год назад +3

      @@InfernosReaper Well raised ground is, moats are manageable. They take some time but they usually pay off in the long run. You can cover most needs in terms of base size with 2 or 3 workbench radii and digging that takes around an hour or so and you can do it pretty much right after Eikthyr and pays off throughout the rest of the playthrough. Buildings are more of a time and resource vampire because if you're concerned about aesthetics/durability even a little bit it can get really time consuming. Even a small building can easily take an hour by itself and you need to have them from the get go but you don't get stone until much further down the line and other materials even later than that. Getting through the slog that Bronze is and building out of wood most of your base takes a long time and you're more or less stuck with that unless you're willing to tear everything down when you get access to stone or iron reinforcements later down.
      Form that perspective the moats are worth the time since you dig them once and they're always equally useful.

    • @InfernosReaper
      @InfernosReaper Год назад +2

      @@Theguyunderyourbed22 Honestly, given how portals and farming work, the game does seem kinda keen on you building multiple bases.
      With that in mind, I've found it's best to only overbuild just one base anyway and go with designs that are small and purpose-built for their respective areas.

    Another thing is to raise the ground high, but that takes A LOT of stone. It's best to just make a moat around your base. The next thing you'll have to worry about are drakes. Luckily they're easy to kill. You can avoid them if you raise the ground around all your buildings which will make drakes not able to get a good aim to hit you.

    That's why I use elevated ground as a base for my main fortress on central island. I just build a wall on the edge of that elevated ground but behind it it's earth and nothing more, the whole base is on top so it cannot be damaged by those damn trolls, only walls can be damaged and they're more or less decorative so even if they're destroyed nothing can get in. Costs a lot of stone to elevate big area but it's only once per game and I usually have too much stone anyway after all the mining. And the view is amazing from the top, it's kinda similar to upper levels of minas tirith in design.

    Now how best to build a bridge/gate/entrance into your base?

    • @quicksandriggs
      @quicksandriggs  3 года назад +2

      Thank you!
      At the moment, the best system would probably be leaving a land bridge as you dig a moat and directly in front of the bridge add a short groundwall (just enough that monsters can't walk in) but you'd still be able to jump over it.
      If you have a groundwall around your base, then you'd just shorten one section enough for you to jump over (even if it took a couple bounces)
      Without drawbridges or something similiar, the safest option at the moment is a complete block and utilizing our ability to scale terrain as an entrance. We will see if Hearth and Home give us some more interesting options!

      Stone flooring has the same durability as other stone items (1500) so it would take just as good of a beating. But it doesn't cover as much space vertically and takes up more space horizontally (compared to stone walls) so I'm not sure it would be worth it.
