- 2022 looks to hopefully be the year of Kratos. With 2018’s PlayStation classic God of War releasing on PC on January 14th, and its sequel God of War Ragnarok still scheduled for later this year, we’re all about to get a lot of the God of Big Dad Energy. We figured this was the best time to look back at 13 of the coolest secrets, easter eggs, and facts about the God of War franchise that you probably didn’t know. Even if you’re the Goddess of Wisdom Athena, there’s sure to be at least one fact on this list that you didn’t know. So, let’s jump into the Bifrost.

That mobile game was actually really really good. One of the best games I played on my phone back then and though graphically behind what's available these days on simple quality it crushes most of today's mobile market, I'd even say all of it if not for the ports.
Do you know where I can play it besides a flip phone? Looked for it in the play store and it's not there
@@Julio_Gomes Unfortunately not. It predates touch technology by a good few years so you won't find it in either store. It was available back in the day for Nokia Symbian Series60 devices and I think some of the others like Sony Ericsson too. It controlled via the numpad so ports to later devices are unlikely.

A shame nobody ever made a "remake" or something for some other medium, just so more people could play it. Seems like a pretty interesting game.

I'm a huge fan of the franchise - I've even watched the videos where the not-yet-Kratos protagonist of the game was a generic Greek soldier with a helmet, sword, and a shield running about what would later be another level in the actual game (I believe it was the one you get to right after speaking to Athena on the ship during a storm - it's like the second level or something, right after Hydra).
Having said all that, I expected to know almost all, if not all the facts... turns out I didn't know any of them except the phone number one XD

I get it - it’s not everyone’s cup f tea, but most people (myself included) enjoy the progression it took. Plus throwing that axe and recalling it is just so satisfying 😋

Onimusha 3 is my all time favourite. And still it's such an underrated franchise.
After the success of Ghost of Tsushima, it would be great to revive the franchise.

1,2 and 3 were good personally the first left the biggest impression on me but all three were good I never really got into the later ones although I only tried one of them once but it didn’t feel like ominusha I hope they make a comeback with either a re2 style remake which I wouldn’t mind or a spiritual sequel made on the RE engine with a free swing mechanic with the sword like the dropped metal gear rising mechanic or the semi realized zandatzu technique used in the game but I’ll take anything at this point in reality I’d take a revengeance 2 for all that cuz that game was fantastic
Kratos really is that "I made a deal with the devil for my soul, but scammed him & took it back" type
and all his friends were like "you cant do that, thats not how this works!" so i scammed them too

None of that happened in God of War 3, that was in God of War 1 when he opened the box on the back of Cronos. You guys should fix that, cause what you said is completely incorrect.
I’m guessing they just forgot that kratos had a wife and daughter already that he killed after being tricked by Ares.
No it's mentioned in 2018, all the previous lore is still cannon according to the tiers gold vault. Kratos can go to different realms i and mythologies. They say he might go to Egyptian or Japanese mythology next

No need to be on the list. It's a very "in your face" fact of the original trilogy, so not something that should make a "things you probably didn't know about God of War" list. It's like saying "they forgot to mention that he was called the Ash Warrior and Ghost of Sparta because of his pale white skin from the ashes of his dead family affixed to him..." they hammered that home in the original trilogy so it's a very well known fact.

Kratos wasnt inspired by the Greek god of the same name. That one was not very relevant nor prominent in most stories and is probably mentioned in like 2 stories of all greek mythology.
The name for the videogame character was chosen because it means "strength", and seemed fit for the character they were developing.
If anything Game Kratos has more similarities with myth Heracles (Hercules) than with any other god, and the name already having been used in ancient myths is a coincidence.
Yup, and as Stig Asmussen said in the God of War 3 documentary, it was a "happy coincidence".

God of war betrayal was really really good but it was too short. Though, I never knew that it's story was canon.
Did you know the orginal movement system has basis in a flying simulator advanced for it's time and some of it mechanics made it more or less further into the series, including the latest release?

Christopher Judge didn't completely replace TC Carson, he only plays the old versio of Kratos.
When Kratos is in Helheim watching the projection of his younger self killing Zeus, you can hear TC Carson's voice.

From the looks of it, makes me think of Jak and Daxter, particularly Jak 2 and 3 where you can collect lots of dark eco and become Dark Jak... it's a change of pace and fighting style that breaks the monotony (if there was such a thing in those games), so why would it be bad?

Talking about "knock offs" Spartan Total Warrior was a very similar game as God of War, set in Greece, amazing game, it came out in 2005, and it probably was overshadowed by God of War at the time, luckily I got that game as well, and it easily is amongst my favorites.

I still remember buying the first game on release in 2005, what a blast, oh man and the PSP games are fantatsic, one of my favorites, can't wait for Ragnarok, really loved the reboot as well.

@@lauramonjas3131 I know, but trust me it is, watch Santa Monica's documentary called god of war raising Kratos. The Devs themselves refer to the game as a soft reboot. I thought it was not a reboot as well but it turns out it is reboot, a soft reboot though. It means our definition of a game reboot is not what we think it is.
@@thabangsibanda3282 yeah i saw it the other day, i agree is a "soft reboot" in terms of gameplay and the aproach the company took to the history but generally speaking i think is wrong to call it a reboot bcs ppl tent to interpret that as a new history that has nothing to do with the old one, wich isnt true

Kratos is related to English 'hard' the later from old English heard, and before that Proto-Germnaic harduz. Both Kratos/kratus and Harduz come from Proto-Indo-European* kort-us from kert/kret 'strong, powerful.'

Bout to show my age lol but onimusha's samanosuke akechi was a samurai, not a ninja. Also even though the developer was inspired by onimusha and the others you mentioned. Check out an old ps2 game called Rygar. I think the similarities will surprise you.

They spoiled the most important twist in the game, that said that twist only hits if you've played the other games. For us PC guys that don't have the same connection it would just be an "oh cool" moment.

Your info on the mythological origins is not quite correct. They did choose the name "Kratos" because of its meaning, but the video game character was not inspired by the Greek mythological character. In the God of War 3 documentary, Stig Asmussen confirmed they didn't even know about the Greek character when they chose that name. And I quote, it was a "happy coincidence".

Death stranding no longer has monster energy drink anymore just fyi. I'm assuming Norman had a contract with monster and hideo kojima had to honor the contract and the contract is probably over now and thus kojima removed the monster energy drinks and now its just bridges energy cans.
The contract must have been with the game itself. Not with Norman. It's far from the first time Kojima adds real products to his games. Metal Gear Solid 3 has the Calorie Mate bars that are real products. MGS4 has an iPod. There are a lot more like that.
