      The bike is actually more than 12k. I bought a myway custom painted F12 dogma in January from the factory and it was 17k. I’d never put jewels on it though, but if it gets him business, good for him. People like different things and have various amounts of discretionary income so it’s definitely not out of touch.

    • @liquidSpin
      @liquidSpin 2 года назад +2

      What exactly is out of touch? It's not like he's poor and doesn't have the resource to do what he did. It's art. It's custom. Coming from a guy who's job is being a jewelry designer.
      Out of touch would be someone like Ed Coupé doing this because he doesn't have the money, the skill and the resources to do so. If he did that's what I would consider out of touch with reality.

    • @fVNzO

      Well That's not the same at all. When you add aftermarket diamonds you drill into the original case of the watch. This is a topcap and custom bar ends. Completely replaceable parts. Your analogy would only work if he took a dremel up to his carbon frame in order to implant flush diamonds into it. This is much more akin to buying an aftermarket diamond bracelet for your watch that's compatible and removeable.

    This was an interesting looking look into a different part of our cycling culture, which is why I like GCN. However, his top cap may cost as much as all of my push bikes together, but it does to my taste look awfully tacky. I'm old school, which is why I have anodised aluminium and carbon fibre bling on my bikes, for looks and lightweight. I did once see a customised Patch Club motorbike that had jewels set into the bolt heads and yokes, which won plenty of shows, but it looked like a tarts handbag. I rather suspect the same with this gentleman's bike! 😁

    A bike can mean the world to its owner and jewelry and assorted bling on a road bike is not so far removed from the paint and chrome and banana seat on a Sting-Ray for kids half a century ago. And I still think the banana seat needs to make a comeback, like for 26" street cruisers with compact frames. And tho' MX handlebars and ten-speed seats were early upgrades for BMX racing, I never did that to my Sting-Ray. That banana seat was comfortable and it was great for descending fast and it made that little frame a little larger as I kept riding and jumping it into my early teens. So thanks to the bling, I could do my thing. 😀

    Strikes me as more of complete custom bike type of thing (NAHBS & HBSA) rather than an off the shelf bike number (especially if it's going to cost the same as the bike) bu-ut as a 'shop window' dealio without tripling costs... yeah, makes plenty of sense.

    If money was no object, I'd invest in the best bike available and skip the bling...

    I lost a stone out of my wedding band last year on a ride. Now I don't wear it anymore out of fear of losing a stone. I would constantly stress with this.
