    The best thing I've ever seen was when my twin boys, who were four years old at the time, saw the "little engine that could" scene where Payne does his war cry (er, scream).
    I've never heard anyone laugh as hard as my boys laughed at that! It's one of my favorite memories. Especially now that my boys are teenagers and don't laugh at anything.

      I always wondered what was on the other side of that closet. Not only would anything in that closet be ruined, but it isn't stopping them bullets so they going threw the back of that closet and into the next room. If the other kids hadn't moved out to the barracks he likely would have killed one.

      @@Yugioh420 It's a .45 looks like, and the age of that building means that door is probably solid core with probably brick in the inner walls. That building isn't made like most houses with 2x4 studs and drywall. The bullet probably never made it through the door and if it did, not out of the closet space.

      when i first saw this film, that line immediately sold me on the narrative potential of what i was going to watch. a man so devoted to military service that he would have a hard time in civilian life. and i was NOT wrong! he was really harsh on the kids at first, but it's a wholesome story of growth for both him AND the kids alike. he softens up a little (learning when to be harsh and when to be gentle) and finds a good life outside of the military as a possible husband and certainly a father figure. as for the kids, he was there when they needed him (closet monster and the abusive father) and they both grew to respect him and grew into men. plus, if you don't mind dark humor, it's just funny as hell to boot!

      Was enjoyable to see a marine watch this movie. Closest thing to the military that I've done is be a leader of parties (squads) in Dungeons and Dragons lol. A good game for team building exercises. Knowing strengths/weaknesses of every party member, building unity within the group, and using out-of-the-box strategy to achieve goals. When I'm the dungeon master, I try to push the party to appoint a leader of the group; either permanently or to interchange depending on the scenario. I do scenarios that aren't straightforward so the party has to think out of the box. DevinG, thank you for your service.

    Couldn't agree more, man! Kids needs a dad, or at the very least, SOME masculine figure in their lives.
    And yes, that's exactly what went wrong with areas of the military, and so many other areas: Too much emotion, not enough reality/practical training. Applies to so many areas nowadays too. Nothing wrong with having emotion/feelings, but they gotta come after the reality/logic part.
    This movie aged so damn well. Was a childhood favorite of mine, and seeing it at almost 40 now, it's still just as good and has so many life lessons and character building. Lotta heart, lotta laughs. Man, the 90s were so goated... I miss 'em. 😢

    • @KristopherPrime
      @KristopherPrime Месяц назад +1

      seriously, when i first watched this film a few years ago, this movie felt like a throwback to those good old days back before wokeness. days when you had black and white characters alike treated equally (major payne feels like a character first and foremost regardless of his race and even set straight the "malcolm X" kid who had a bit of a black power trip going at first). and also back then when people weren't afraid to have politically incorrect humor like a lot of the "dark humor" here. plus, like you said, this was a "man's movie" of payne becoming a wonderful father figure who (despite being a little harsh) did benefit the boys mor than he hurt them and grew them into real men. he was even there for two of them when he needed to be, "killing" the theoretical closet monster and setting straight the family issues of the oldest of the boys. heck, even the blind impaired kid was given a moment to shine with the blindfold gun twirl!

    In a 2008 Father’s Day speech, a few months before his election as president of the United States, Barack Obama said, “Fathers are “critical” to the foundation of each family. They are teachers and coaches. They are mentors and role models. They are examples of success and they are the men who constantly push us toward it.”
    What makes his comments particularly noteworthy is that Barack Obama grew up without a father. Both boys and girls need fathers. A boy had no built-in understanding about how to be a man. This means a good and responsible man. Male nature is wild, most obviously regarding sex and violence. If a boy does not have a father who models how a man controls himself, he will most likely not know how to control himself, let alone want to. That’s why most males in prison for violent crimes grew up without a father.
    There’s no question that many mothers have done an excellent job raising a boy without their son’s father. But common sense alone suggests that a mother simply cannot model what a boy “should”be any more than a man can model to a girl what a woman “should” be. And then there is the issue of controlling boys and their wild natures. Again, there are mothers who are able to do this, but if a boy is at all difficult, as so many are as he gets older, most mothers will find it more and more difficult to control their son, because unruly boys listen to their fathers much more than they listen to their mothers. Which is precisely why most violent criminals grew up in fatherless homes. They obviously did not listen to their mothers.
    As regards to daughters, the father is the man girls learn to relate to. Without a father to relate to and bond with, there are at least two destructive consequences. First, she will not know how to choose a man wisely. She will not know how a man should treat her and she may well end up with a man who mistreats her. Second, to fulfill her desire to bond with a man. As primal a yearning in most women as bonding with a woman in most men, she will go from man to man. Girls without fathers in their lives are for more likely to be sexually promiscuous, and to begin sexual activity at an earlier age, which in turn are reasons many young women are depressed. Few women find sleeping with man after man fulfilling. Most find it ultimately depressing.
    Finally, fathers give both sons and daughters the thing children need most, a sense of safety and security. As much as children need love, they need a sense of security even more. And in general, Moms give love and Dads give security. It’s not that hard to learn how necessary fathers are, not just by having one obviously and being one yourself, but by the many people men and women of all ages, who can tell others that they see certain men in their lives as “father figures”. Any man should be honored to fill that role. The good news is that many men can fill it, grandfathers, uncles, teachers, mentors, clergy, etc. But some man HAS to be your father.

    One of my all time favorite movies. If you like this check out his brother's movie Low Down Dirty Shame (with a young Jada Pinket) and their show prior to this, In Living Color (skit comedy with early days Jim Carey and J. Lo!). Kind of like SNL but more offensive in funny ways. I remember watching it at slumber parties in middle school.

    As funny today as it was back in the day. Crazy how much Damon's son looks like him. Also really LOVE Damon in The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis and Halle Berry.
