18:30 - Legal, passing all documents to the opposition is called 'pre-trial discovery'. It can also weigh a case down in meaningless paperwork. Lawyers love making the other side hemorrhage money from reading documents.
The judge is about as far from Fred Gwynne's real personality as you could get. In real life, he was a kind, gentle, super-friendly, very funny guy. I live about 25 miles from his hometown here in Pennsylvania. He was famous for being good to his fans. Before he died, whenever fans would go to his house unannounced, he and his wife would often invite them in and have coffee. Herman Munster was the closest thing to Fred's real personality.
The scene where he knocks over the chess pieces was not originally planned for the movie. It was an accident and they loved it so much it made it into the final cut of the movie.
This movie is so well done and accurate that law schools often show it as a way to start discussions around criminal procedure and how to act in the courtroom as an attorney.
I think the judge was only on his ass because he kept breaking procedure. He made it clear that every procedure would be followed and clear that he ran a very tight ship.
yeah also he probably did believe that they did it. who wouldnt want to see 2 murderers go down? but once reasonable doubt was established he clearly changed his tune.
A lot of people miss at the end when Vinny shakes the the Judge's hand. It isnt an awkward two handed shake. It is Vinny putting both hands up together to be handcuffed, thinking he is going to be arrested. Then the Judge just shakes his hand. Great reaction!!
The judge ran a traditional, by the book courtroom. It's a small town where not a lot goes on, so a murder case was a big deal. The dependents were from New York and they brought in a "Big City Attorney", so he wanted to make sure his court wasn't made a mockery of.
The judge warned him that he was a very strict believer in procedure. Vinny was, at first, ignorant and somewhat disrespectful considering how formal the judge is. And the judge began to suspect (correctly!) that something was fishy. By the time of the trial, the hostility is well established. It isn't because Vinny's from a "big city". He dug his own grave with the judge.
One of the most genius things about this movie is that there isn’t a true antagonist. Sure, the judge could be labeled as such, but he’s not necessarily a “bad guy”. He’s just doing his job “to the letter of the law”. Same with the opposing lawyer, or the sheriff. They’re not conspiring against the defendants, it’s not an evil plot to pin the murder on them, it’s just a case of mistaken identity and a story about a trial. There’s really no bad guy needed
I don't think the judge wanted the defendants to lose. However, I think he was ticked at Vinny, thinking he was looking down on their court. The judge went to Yale law, which means he was in that small town by choice. He probably loved the town and wanted their legal system to be respected. With all that said, ruling on the expert would likely have resulted in a new trial on appeal if they got to conviction.
Exactly. He didn't appreciate the New York swag walking in and treating him like a hillbilly. But he was a fair man, dedicated to the law and the proper procedure.
I agree with your analysis of the judge's attitude and possible motivations for being tough on Vinny. I would also like to add that the judge's first few impressions of Vinny was that he didn't know what he was doing and the judge being a graduate of Yale law, as you mentioned, was going to be hard on him because he appeared to be completely incompetent. I disagree with the case being overturned on appeal because of the Wilbur testimony. It is completely reasonable to have an expert testify about the mechanical details of a vehicle used in a robbery/murder. It's not enough to overturn the case in my humble opinion.
@AntonioMontana-pu8ho good points. Thanks. So the reason I stated it would be turned on appeal was not specifically because of the testimony but the discovery violations. The prosecution can not introduce expert witnesses on the morning of an ongoing trial. The prejudicial nature of the judges ruling would have put the defense in a disadvantaged position. Furthermore, the judges' own words would have been used on appeal.
@Zamiroh thank you for your reply and I realize the full situation going on here. I suppose what point I was actually trying to make is that even though the witness was introduced at the last moment, I think it is reasonable for the judge or appellate court to assume that the defense should already be prepared for any testimony pertaining to said vehicle because of the disclosure they had to view the crime scene, the police photos of the crime scene and the vehicle itself. That's why I said I don't believe it would be enough to overturn the conviction. If Mona Lisa doesn't testify and Wilbur's testimony sticks, then I think it would be more likely they would file a writ for ineffective counsel and get a new trial that way. I'm no lawyer so I could be wrong. Maybe you are an attorney and know these situations better than me so it's just my humble opinion based on the common sense decisions I've seen over the years. Another point that could be made is that 2 cars('64 Skylark & '63 Tempest) that were close to 30 years old could have been modified and had all new parts, meaning a good mechanic could have installed a whole new powertrain and suspension in the Skylark to give it positraction and an independent rear suspension and it would make the same tire marks. If I was the defense attorney, I probably would have asked for a continuance so I could have a full mechanical inspection of the Skylark to make sure it's still equipped the way it was when it left the factory. The only way Mona Lisa's testimony holds up is if both cars are stock.
I think the judge was fair. One of the things people seem to miss in this movie was the reason the judge overruled the objection to the FBI analyst, which is a shame because the prosecutor deserves a lot of credit for setting that trap. He knew there might be a chance that the judge wouldn't let the analyst in, so he tipped Vinny off the previous night, on purpose, so that Vinny would write a "lucid, intelligent, WELL THOUGHT OUT objection." Remember, the objection is that this witness was a surprise to the defense - but the objection is well thought out, which can only mean that they saw it coming and it's not a surprise after all.
I think it was more because Vinny was trying the judge's patience with the many contempt charges, and all his other antics - like falling asleep in court.
That's nonsense. This is the one thing that stood out in this movie as a reversible error on appeal. Vinny being notified the night before does not give him enough time to review the evidence, which he is allowed to have and more importantly to find an expert defense witness to challenge those findings. The prosecutor did not "set a trap" that led to the judge overruling the objective. The judge just made an error which would get reversed on appeal. The judge had no legal standing on which to overrule the objection.
@@dave2059 Nothing in there challenges my logic, you just don't like the scenario, but it is what it is. The judge is obviously unaware of the call from the prosecutor and only knows that the objection to a "surprise" is very well thought-out.
in the scene where Vinny first arrives in town you see two boys riding bikes. they got their roles just because they were there . the film company asked them if they wanted to be in the film

@Devin Joe Pesci is one of the most underrated actors of all time. Like OLD Hollywood Joe can do it all, yes he is most famous for his gangster characters but movie whor3s like myself also know how amazingly funny he can be from movies like this, or his Lethal weapon character, and a few other gems. I enjoyed your reactions and comments for My Cousin Vinny A lot! Marisa Tomei earned her Best Actress award in a supporting role in My Cousin Vinny . She beat out some Big name actresses and this was her first Big role . My Cousin Vinney is one of my favorite comedy/ drama's . As for the Judge I do not feel that he wanted the defendants to be guilty or showed favorites at first . He was polite and nice to "Jerry Gallow" in his office but I think the issue with "Jerry's" suit and being put into lock up for contempt set the problems with the Judge's attitude against their attorney ( not especially the college students ) . It was Mona Lisa in the courtroom on the witness stand that turned everyone on Vinny's side .
It was definitely a "country vs. city" mentality, a very real thing. I lived in the South for several years and experienced it first hand. People in the country often default to seeing people from the city in a negative light, so the judge, jury, police, etc, had a bias towards expecting them to be guilty. It's a really interesting added element to the whole story, and they did it subtly enough to be believable, since they were still logical and accepted the facts when they were faced with them, rather than blatantly ignoring the facts and being unreasonable like we see in a lot of movies with those kind of stereotypes.
I love the bit when Judge is coming in for a handshake but Vinnie raises both hands in anticipation of getting handcuffed. Pure gold. Pesci is also hilarious in The Super. Peace, all 💕

A lie is an intentional deception, with the witnesses it was a case of mistaken identity so they were intentionally lying and identifying them as the suspects. It's important to differentiate the two.
For sure the Judge wanted to show up the big city New York lawyer. Joe Pesci crushed this role. Also Marisa tomei who played his girlfriend (and aunt May in the Tom Holland spiderman movies) she won an Oscar for best supporting actress for this movie !
The judge did more than most would have to help Vinny along. First, he warned him he was strict with procedure, the. He gave him all the Alabama laws he would need to know, then he warned him several times before ever holding him in contempt. This is one of those rare time in movies when no one was actually corrupt, it was just miscommunication and an overwhelming coincidence that the killers looked like them and drove a similar car. Once they knew the truth everyone hoped on board with letting them go.
The judge wanted Vinny to respect the judicial system. He could tell Vinny lacked respect based on how he dressed. Vinny proved the judge right, which is why he kept getting contempt charges.
can you react to Requiem for a dream? Its a movie about addiction. It really had an impact on me when I was an addict and would love to see your reaction to it!
Ah, one of my favorite Pesci comedies and legal films! Legal Eagle on RUclips reviewed this movie to see how accurate it is for court law, and gave it an A!
The cop wasnt lying. The karate kid did say "i shot the clerk. I shot the clerk" but it was read as a statement by the cop instead of "I shot the clerk? I shot the clerk? The cop thought he was confessing, but Larusso was asking a question
A prison riot sounds like New York at night. It can be difficult for city folks to sleep in the countyside because noises aren’t drowned out by the hum of activity
This movie has a brilliant script because it plays upon cultural mistrust without being melodramatic or preachy about it. The boys don't trust the local law because of prejudice against Southerners ("They're all inbred!" "They sleep with their sisters!") And from their point of view they're being railroaded. The local police in their prejudice against Yankees only see two outsiders who apparently committed murder. The local judge sees a big-city attorney who is likely to disrespect a small-town court of justice. The best part is the resolution where everybody sees the clear facts of the case and all suspicion evaporates. The two youths did not commit murder and the local court did not commit a deliberate miscarraige of justice. Everybody was only interested in finding the truth, and luckily they found it.
The judge was just hard on Vinnie cuz he wasn’t acting the way he was supposed to I think. The judge said in the beginning he expects Vinnie to know the laws and procedures, and he’ll react harshly when he doesn’t.
Some facts about this movie the chess pieces falling over wasn't scripted and the owl wasn't planned either and when the stuttering public defender speaks in the court room for the first time if you look closely in the background the 3 actors at the table are trying not to laugh
I like how you didnt immeditaley think the judge was being a jerk. most people just get mad at him instead of vinny for being too dumb to follow basic procedure lol.
well most cops are pretty chill and will let you off with a warning if you are honest for minor crimes. if you go full soverign citizen for every little thing, youre gonna make more trouble for yourself and spend time in jail where answering their questions without an atittude would avoid it. but if a cop arrests you at gunpoint, then yeah, stfu lol.
Unfortunately, the reality of the justice system is that you have to prove your innocence. Like the guy who was saved from a murder conviction by TV footage of him at a game. If he wasn't lucky, he'd have gone to prison. How many innocent people weren't so lucky?
There are plenty of small town / small city courts in this country where out-of-town attorneys will get prejudicial rulings against them. It’s so common that there’s a term for it: getting “hometowned.” But I never got the feeling that was afoot in this portrayal. Vinnie undercut his own credibility with this judge at every turn. With the lone exception of denying a continuance with respect to the expert witness testimony, I didn’t think the judge was out of line at all.
*If you’ve enjoyed the reaction please leave like on the video. Your support means EVERYTHING!! I love you guys*

Marisa Tomei definitely deserved the Oscar she got for the role
How so?
Alot of people don't realise that Vinny. Knew everything Lisa testified to. He told Sheriff Farley what to do a search for.

I have cousins named Paris Hilton, Henry Rollins, and Harry "The Horse" Danning. The last is the only one I talked to.
The scene with the owl wasn't supposed to be in that scene but it happened to land in that spot so it was shot before the bird could leave
Funny movie
Real lawyers who seen this said its close to real court
You should recognize Marisa Tomei as Aunt May from the Tom Hollander Spider-Man movies of the MCU!
Check joe pesci out in The Super and 8 Heads in a Dufflebag 😂😅
This is one of the few movies where there are no bad guys actually in the movie. Everyone wants to get the truth.
The judge was just hard on Vinnie cuz he wasn’t acting the way he was supposed to I think. The judge said in the beginning he expects Vinnie to know the laws and procedures, and he’ll react harshly when he doesn’t.
Next: 12 Angry Men
Some facts about this movie the chess pieces falling over wasn't scripted and the owl wasn't planned either and when the stuttering public defender speaks in the court room for the first time if you look closely in the background the 3 actors at the table are trying not to laugh
I like how you didnt immeditaley think the judge was being a jerk. most people just get mad at him instead of vinny for being too dumb to follow basic procedure lol.
My alltime favorite movie
If you want to see Joe Pesci in a comedy, you should watch a movie called '8 Heads in a Duffle bag'!
12:45 Marissa Tomei is a fuckin gem dawg
Her biological clock.
Bang bang.
Is tickin like this
Lesson: never talk to the cops without an attorney regardless of how small you think the crime is
well most cops are pretty chill and will let you off with a warning if you are honest for minor crimes. if you go full soverign citizen for every little thing, youre gonna make more trouble for yourself and spend time in jail where answering their questions without an atittude would avoid it. but if a cop arrests you at gunpoint, then yeah, stfu lol.
That was from the golden era of movies. That time will never come again! It is all hot liquid dog sh*t now.
Can't lie I got two cousins names John 😂
To this day Marisa Tomei is still the finest and hottest Aunt May. *Drops Mic*
