Hey girl I’m having my mastectomy in Dec. And radiation shortly after. I have a question. How painful is the mastectomy cuz my surgeon doesn’t believe in narcotics and I’m worried about being in pain and having a 10 month old plus 4 other children. My husband will help when he can but we can’t take off work for 2 weeks. Also my reconstruction doctor doesn’t want to put in expanders at the time of mastectomy, do you know how common this is?

Pain can be so variable depending on the person and exactly what’s done during surgery. I took pain meds for a few days then nothing. Ask about a nerve block (given right before surgery) as this can reduce pain post-surgery and reduce need for meds. Pain from the drains was the worst part and I was surprised I wasn’t more sore just from the surgery. I rode my stationary bike the day after surgery! Picking up a little one will likely be a challenge post-surgery. Some women do get delayed reconstruction where tissue expanders are put in during another surgery after mastectomy. My understanding is when you’re doing radiation it’s best to expand the tissues beforehand. Definitely worth confirming this with your plastic surgeon! Good luck.

Ok thank you, yes I’m trying to get a second opinion about the tissue expanders because my radiation oncologist said he’s never seen them not do tissue expanders before radiation if someone is getting reconstruction. I’m just worried about having a 10 month old during surgery recuperation.. but thank you so much for your videos!
