Thank you, I downloaded the Stretching Guide! By the way, have you done any weight training as part of your maintenance program? I’m 69 yrs old, had my DMX on 30 Jan 2024. I’m asking because I noticed that my boobs hid any weight gained, and now since my DMX, I noticed that I have a little belly! Additionally, I take Anastrozole (Arimidex), which is known to increase blood pressure, and weight gain, so I started intermittent fasting, along with DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) to counter both blood pressure and weight gain. Nevertheless, I still want to increase my chest muscles and abdominal muscles because I don’t want to always have to wear protheses. Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you, Scipia
That’s great you got the stretching guide - hope it helps! Yes, I do weight training as a part of my maintenance program. I do CrossFit 5x per week. I was going to do a video at some point on strength training after breast cancer. To get an idea of some of the things that I do I made 2 videos of the exercises that I did after my double mastectomy - (0-6 weeks) ruclips.net/video/t8bCo8OFSTk/видео.html; (7-12 weeks) ruclips.net/video/OCvYl-llJ0o/видео.html. I’ve increased the weights significantly since then but it gives a general idea. I’ve heard other women say the same thing after flat closure - that their body contour looks different with different proportions post-mastectomy. Doing more strength training will help with body weight and changing your chest/shoulder contour.
@ Thank you for your input! Sounds like I’m on the right path! You definitely lift more than I would ever have thought of lifting! Kudos! Additionally, I never did Cross-Fit! I had the opportunity when I was n the military, but it looked like more of a “time commitment” requirement that I just didn’t have at the time! However, I have consistently done free weights, weight machines, TRX, resistance bands, which I incorporate into my cardio (tennis, cycling, golfing-riding & walking, and running-3 to 5 miles at one to two times/week). Nevertheless, looks like I need to add barbells now to my workout equation! Lastly, I must commend you for documenting your journey! I have “sort of” been documenting my journey, but not to your detail. I’ll follow your lead on this because I now see benefits, particularly for “looking in the rearview mirror” i.e., accomplishments, change up of workout routines (what’s worked vs what hasn’t worked). By the way, I’m 69 yrs old, and realize that working out is now a “forever regimen!” Do you think as you age that you will change your workout routine? Thanks again! Scipia
Scipia, it sounds like you’re doing lots of the right things! Every decade that we’re older weightlifting becomes even more important. You don’t necessarily need to workout with a barbell, dumbbells work great too. I do think that my routine will change overtime. I already make some modifications post-surgery and radiation to some of the movements we do in CrossFit. You’re right, I documented my journey in quite a bit of detail. The ironic thing is that I never planned on sharing it!
Hi, as a chiropractor, at what point would you say it's safe for someone that went through a double mastectomy to go to chiro? Any particular positions/stretches are off limits like facing down or recommended for some relief?
I had my first treatment a week after my double mastectomy. The focus at this stage was on the soft tissues (neck, shoulder, midback, etc) because I was SO tight/stiff post-surgery. The positions that I was in were lying on my back and sitting only. I had neck adjustments soon after but waited until ~7 weeks to get my midback adjusted where I was lying on my stomach. This provided such of relief in midback tension. In terms of positions to avoid I would ask your surgeon how long you should avoid sleeping on your stomach. Then you'll have a better idea of how long to wait to get treatment when you're lying on your stomach. Another limitation is any movements that would stretch or put tension on your incisions. A good practitioner is adaptable so they can always work around any limitations. I typically see patients starting at ~3 weeks post-surgery. Hope that helps.
