A look back at the death of Atatiana Jefferson ahead of former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean's trial

- Aaron Dean is accused of murder in the shooting death of Atatiana Jefferson. Here's a look back what the events that have happened since that Oct. 12, 2019, night.
He NEVER announced that he was the police or that he was outside her house. He murdered her.
It makes me wonder how this cop would react if HE heard unknown/unidentified people outside HIS house in the middle of the night...
Especially at the backdoor!? Why'd they choose that route?!
Or looked to be a Peeping Tom 🙄😳🤔
She was inside her home and he killed her. He is a monster and a murderer. 😡😡😡😡😡
So the dude just walks into someone's home unannounced and shoots her, because she had a gun on her due to the fact that she had no idea who was coming in. And all this could have been avoided with a simple knock on the door by the police officer for a wellness check. Unbelievable.
Officer Dean was a s***** cop and he never should have been allowed to be a cop because he was incompetent and could not easily and in a chill manner handle a routine call .
You can tell he doesn't have Street smarts or people skills and people like that should never ever ever ever be allowed as a cop on the street
Well if the cops knew she had a gun she should not have even had it near her knowing that there coming I’d put it down somewhere and wait for them outfront of something
@@jaypeterman3478 Her neighbor called the cops to do a wellness check on her. She didn't know the cops were coming, so she thought it was an intruder lurking in her backyard.
"I wouldn't have called the police if I knew this was going to happen."
This is EXACTLY why people don't trust police.
I Agree
Yet blacks trust their government, even though black men, between the ages 15 to 34, are more than 20 times more likely to be killed with a gun than white men of the same age. The vast majority of which are killed by other young black men. The government clearly dislikes Blk people.

The Tampa Chief of Police identified herself as being a police officer when pulled over by a cop and someone said obviously it's because she knows if you aren't a cop you just might get killed for being a civilian 😳🤦
@@merry8545 I have been thinking the same thing. Whether she told the deputy she was a police chief or simply stated that she was a cop, it probably saved her life.
I really hope her nephew and the neighbor can find peace.
I have a terrible headache after watching this.
I Hope so to ❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
This so infuriating because this police department tried to criminalize Ms. Jefferson. I am wondering why you take a job that you're scared to do. At first I didn't blame the officer and blamed the 911 dispatcher . But I discovered the officer and his partner didn't identify and announce themselves. Then the officer gave an order but did not give enough time for Ms. Jefferson to comply. The police department tried to make Ms. Jefferson the criminal for defending herself and her nephew.
He went in there un announced because he wanted tk escalate. Just going in unannounced as in a no knock warrant is an escalation in itself
@@navigator1372 he did not go in - he was outside the window
The neighbor is not to blame, but some old behaviors should never die! Bring back the days when we picked up our landline phones, that ring through the house, and call our neighbors! “Is everything alright over there?”
He, probably, didn't have her number.
I don't know why he didn't just knock on her door 😔
@@OuttheMud212 Well, it was 2AM or 3AM. He, probably, didn't want to startle her, or make her uncomfortable.
@@OuttheMud212
I was thinking the same thing.
If he was concerned enough to call the police, HE should have went to check himself.
@Chris P
I totally agree, I have done that before. My neighbor's back doors were opened and I called her name, when she didn't answer, I called her and she was at work. Needless to say some low life had broken into her home.
He was gone, but he cut himself when he broke the window and the police got his DNA.
The looser went to jail 😁
Edit: he had broken a window in the front of her place. That's how he got in. Later we saw the cameras and it was a plus because the police had video of him and his DNA!
This "thing" cops have about seeing some other non cop with a gun, and just instantly killing them is utterly atrocious.
Last time I checked.
Having a firearm is NOT illegal, nor a death sentence.
fr in her OWN home with someone in the backyard unannounced and peaking through windows🤦♂️ how else should she have responded.
@@lilsocc5367
We're not in disagreement.
@@lilsocc5367
she should have shot the pig tbh
It's weird because it seems like most cops support the right to bear arms but at the same time they recognise how problematic guns are and see anyone with one as a threat.
They need to pick a stance - either it's fine to have a gun and you should be treated normally if you're armed, or they need to recognise that civilians having guns leads to a lot of problems.
@@drummingtildeathYou are wrong. Most of them do not support it. Thats your simply impression. They do not support it in big numbers.
That poor man, my heart breaks for the neighbor. I have lost all faith in the police and that makes my heart break for all of the citizens of Fort Worth.
Fort Worth, Texas, my home town. I'm 61 years old now and learned at an early age that police are people you can get to know as person not a badge. Now, I think a badge and a gun, with excuses and qualified immunity. As I write these words I actually feel sick to my stomach. (I'm not just saying this for effect, I am genuinely sick.)

They always try to criminalize the victim. If you shine a light into someone's eyes through a window they can't see you. He shot through that window like it was nothing. Didn't even give her a chance to respond nothing.
The sad part about this is that he willingly let her die. She bled out and he just stood there. No CPR, No call EMT, Nothing. He did even warn his partner that he thought they were in danger.
Officer’s shouldn’t be allowed to resign when they are reckless and someone has lost their life because of it. They are to be fired!!! My heart goes out to the neighbor. He will live with this guilt for the rest of his life and it’s not his fault. He did what any concerned neighbor would have done.
Please if you would look for my comment which may have been buried somewhere by you too as they usually try to put it at least 20 or 40 spots down but I agree with you and he never should have been allowed to be a cop to begin with

As as single woman, if I heard strange noises outside at night and looked out my bedroom window to see 2 people dressed in dark clothing with guns shining flashlights all over and approaching my window, I would be absolutely TERRIFIED.
I don't blame Atatiana for getting her gun, because she was alone with a child and there was 2 strangers in her backyard approaching with guns. She did the right thing to try to protect herself, her nephew and their home.
The cops never announced themselves and that's total BS! If they would've announced themselves right away at the front door, Atatiana wouldn't have gotten scared and got her gun.
Also, the fact this cop shot her and didn't immediately call an ambulance or provide her emergency medical aid - that is completely inexcusable and unforgivable. He just let her bleed to death. HE LET HER DIE!

@@sarahlu7797 obviously not always but thats how we feel. why call the cops when something as simple as this can turn fatal. especially if you are a black gun owner, its like we aren’t allowed to have protection because if we are seen with a weapon legal or not, the first instinct of police is to shoot they will even go as far as shooting the dead body. so yes as far as how we feel this is always a possibility and a reason to not get police involved.

I agree!! I don’t think he could see it either. He just shot!
Was a gun ever mentioned in the police call
Why didn't they knock on the door instead of creeping around the property?
Cowards creep.
Why didnt the police call out “THIS IS A WELLNESS CHECK” anyone home?

They should of gone to the door. Never call police for help. That's not their job. They are trained to protect themselves not you. They come out of the academy with fear drilled into them and we are the enemy. Wake up
AMEN......100%.....how do people not realize this in 2022.
Exactly. Police are not meant or trained to be our first responders.
Right.
It was literally a wellness check aka check on someone just because your worried last time I checked police officers are trained and used for tht. The police officer is clearly in the wrong cause how can you go in someone’s house unannounced and expect them not to be scared and carry a weapon to protect themselves in case it’s something harmful? Please explain your reasoning to me
But their motto is "to protect and serve" serve whom? Protect whom? What is their job if not to protect the public who provides them a paycheck? I'm not certain why we have cops if their only job is to protect one another 🤷
Guy should have crossed the street and checked on his neighbour, instead of calling the cops. The neighbourly thing to do. Super tragic. Super sad. Hopefully some lessons learned. RIP lady.
It's not a crime to have windows or doors open 🤔. James we should all check on our neighbors. Get your neighbors phone numbers and also, update your neighbors changes: whose staying in your home if you are gone.
I agree 💯.
I also agree!
James, should have went and easily called out his neighbor's name.
By his own words he didn't call for a wellness check, he said "Her door and windows, had never been opened that long".
Therefore implying there was a problem. *He should have walked over there and checked for himself.
*James, prompted an investigation, NOT a wellness check.

This is sad and next time if you are a neighbor go knock on the door and if you are close neighbors exchange numbers with one another.

Why was the neighbor worried in the first place?

Why didn't you check on her, your self.

Why was he shooting inside the house. This is ridiculous.
What was the history with the neighbor?
6 years ago my family members call a well being check on me. The riverside cops were aggressive fortunately my sister didn’t open the door and told them they needed a judge signed warrant to come into my home where I was asleep. I think otherwise I’d be dead.
Let me straight, they went to her house, but never went to the door or announced their presense, so just went to the window and shot at her in merely second? Why reform or defund the police has never drafted into the bill?

Horrible, the officer was too quick with his gun point blank period and never treated the situation as a concern citizen but a common criminal
Justice and peace. Financial abundance to the family that lost something that was priceless.
Senseless killing from a cop.
I used to make calls like that to the police, but now I literally don't trust them. Anytime I've called police for like an actual violent act happening on the streets or in front of my house they didn't show up till like half hour later anyway.
you gotta say a white lady is being attacked by a Black/Latino... they'll be there in 5 mins flat.
They need to change the procedure on how they deal with these unannounced calls! Maybe a couple of cars should have pulled up put over head brights on the house, got on the speaker and made contact! Announcing their presence as police, Instead the procedure for most departments is to show up don’t announce you’re and investigate! Meanwhile a legit howe owner doesn’t know who you are, and prepare to defend themselves!
Why was the neighbor worried about her in the first place… I’m just wondering,… what was going on that he needed to call the police?
Why the heck didn’t he just go over to the house and check on her? Did he have her phone number and the police could have found information to call her themselves. !!!
I'm so sorry to the family and neighbor.
12/13/2022: It is so SAD😭that we are like this. The police are on edge and so are the citizens. This police officer used POOR judgement by not SPEAKING up and letting her know he was there and why. This is an incident that could have been avoided. There have also been police who have been shot just pulling someone over to tell them that they have a taillight out too. This is the world in which we live and I do not see it getting better. 😭😭😭😭😭😭My condolence to the family✝️✝️
I am puzzle about Black Americans, What is friendly next door neighbour, Is the neighbour so concern and scare about checking the welfare of his neighbour... hoops 'the stand your ground law'. The overzealous and incompetent cop officer Aaron Dean is culpable and guilty for the untimely dead of Atatiana Jefferson.
Sorry this happened to the family .. But im tryna understand the reason the neighbor ask for someone to check on her at 2:30 a.m .. . Like he never said why?
Indeed, what was the REASON for him making the call at 2 - 3 A.M. in the first place? Secondly, an 8 year child should've been in bed asleep.
Thirdly, the action of the police officer was totally inexcusable.
R.I.E.P, my dear sister.
He could have callled his nighbor or knocked on her door. Why did he need to call the cops? do people usually call police to check on nighbors ?
The neighbour should have checked on her himself. At that time the cops were busy killing black people for no eason so why would he even call the cops.
2:00 am the neighbor saw the door open obviously wasn’t the norm.. so he called for help to check it out -
Why didn't he announce himself at the door
Oh my gosh. Bless the neighbor and the nephew.
Hate to judge, but just looking at him he kinda seems like he’s got problems and didn’t get into that profession to help people. More like a kid that got bullied and chose it to feel like he had some authority and he wouldn’t be bullied anymore. The caller should kinda feel bad she probably just burnt dinner and had to air it out.
Multiple errors by the Police and a concerned neighbor. The homeowner was doing her job by protecting her keep and child.

Is it so hard for you to check on your own neighbour yourself? Just shout at the door.
The neighbor should’ve just walked over to check on his neighbor but instead he called police for nothing now this happened
Manslaughter might be the appropriate technical call, but there should be a price for sloppy police work which results in senseless death - something like _reckless endangerment._ Maybe they can sue the city and get restitution. Who knows?
What training did the officer have? Pathetic he could have called out and said hello is everyone ok here.
It is the officers fault. The woman is allowed to have a gun in her home. It is unacceptable.
Why would he shoot in her window
It is your fault. Because you made a call instead of going over and checking on your neighbor yourself. You were SO concerned for her well-being, you sent armed people to do it. What did you think they were going to do? All they get taught is violence. 🤷♂️
Wow they killed that girl … so sad .. I hope that little boy is okay
Let’s see the whole film. Also why not close the door and call the police. You can’t shoot through the window. The cop should have backed off instead of firing. He needed to announce himself as police at the door. This tragedy happened because both were careless, however she lost her life. Now how can this be fixed….it can’t! Prayer for the family.
Next time maybe knock on the door yourself to check on your neighbour rather than calling the heavily armed psychopaths as if that's going to help
right.. totally his fault..
Neighbors should mind their own business, what was the concern? Too quiet? Officer was suppose to knock on front door and identify himself.
Just more proof that you should never call the police. There is no situation that the police cannot make worse.
Why did she have the doors wide open?! 🤦🏿♀️
Exactly!!
It is the Neighbor fault that woman is dead.Calling 911 before checking the house out or even calling his neighbor to make sure she was alright before calling for police was a big mistake.
He is a worthless officer.
Welfare checks are like calling a hit team. These guys aren't your friends
All he had to do was walk to the house and check on his "neighbor." 🙄
All he had to do was knock on the front door and say Ft Worth Police Department.
Done deal. Nothing else needed to happen. But ole boy had to play hero.
IF HE REALLY WAS CONCERNING ABOUT THE NEIBOR WHY HE DIDN'T HAS THE PHONE NUMBER?!?!? NAHHHH!!!!!
What was the call for??? Non emergency? For WHAT?!?!!(!(!?
I don't understand why her neighbor had to call the police, why couldn't he just walk over and knock on the door and asked if she was okay.
People need to learn when you call the police, you are putting someone's life on the line, if videos has taught us anything, it is 1. Police lie on a regular basis, 2. Far too many officers, are suffering from mental illness.
I hope the family sues and that cop gets life in prison
I believe police officers should not have firearms, maybe just like the chief or something when you call them in for backup
The neighbor could have walked over to check! He should be held accountable too! He is the reason she died in the first place
Why didnt he just knock on the door?? Instead of creeping around the home when it was just a Welfare check, the neighbour just said to check on her he didnt say that there was an intruder or suspecious activities. Just dont understand why he creeps around the home at night without saying anything
