    Al Jardine left the band before the Surin Safari demo session, rejoining the band in the fall of 1963. Not to add insult to injury, many of the recordings after 1963 featured David Marks but was credited to Al Jardine. Give David Marks some respect !!!!!

    UNBELIEVABLE !! They started performing in the LATE 1950s as The Pendletones ? WRONG.
    Never happened. Brian & Al graduated from Hawthorne High in 1960. Numerous documentaries mention Brian & Al casually occasionally singing together in high school, but never as an "act."
    The Pendletones early name story era probably lasted only a few weeks at most.
    Surfin' recorded in Oct 1961 was before their "official" first live performance.
    LP Shut Down Vol. 2 just made the Top 20 LP charts? It got to #13 and went gold !!
    I didn't bother paying attention to the rest after hearing the early history mistakes.

    This is the history about their HISTORY on the charts. Nothing else. The efforts from '66 to '73 are magnificent. The best period of the band, without devaluing the earliest era because you can't get one without the other.
    That era produced albums with high creativity and talent, letting the group to experiment without Brian but with Brian's teachings (without talking about Mike Love). I think that period with, those albums of the band are one of the most highly underrated records and productions of all time. They are really good records (without caring about the charts) and some of them are epic.

      I disagree, 62-67 was their peak measured in every possible way. By the end of 1963 they were the number one band in the country and what followed up until '67 was a barrage of sublime Americana. You might prefer the post-'67 stuff but you're in the minority. To each his own.

    Horrible video. The band is greater and more legendary than what this video is showing. The Beach Boys are legendary and have produced some terrific and very influential albums (Today!, Pet Sounds, Surfs Up, Sunflower... etc...). Wow, the creators of this video must be very ignorant. YunaMeia Reed As a longtime fan, it frustrates me that people don't look beyond the surfer/summer image and sound, and I blame Capitol since that's how the band was marketed. It doesn't help that their name is The 'BEACH' Boys, so of course people associate the name with the obvious theme.

    I first saw them in Memphis about 1963. Mike Love autographed my hand at the Memphis airport, and I didn't wash my hand until it wore off. I was about 12 years old. I saw Brian and Al last summer on tour. They were absolutely amazing!

  • @TimeToGetAlone
    @TimeToGetAlone 10 лет назад +19

    Did I just see Summer in Paradise and Stars and Stripes get specifically referenced while the entire early 70's period got brushed over? That reeks of disregard for anything that doesn't fit into the narrow image in which the band has been stereotyped.
    And though I can understand why there's an emphasis on the band's commercial heyday to a degree, the musical achievement angle should come into the fray a little. As a serious examination into the band, Surf's Up is a far more vital part of their story than Kokomo. I would dread a top 10 for The Beach Boys, because I imagine silly hit songs like Kokomo, Rock and Roll Music, and Barbara Ann will take priority over Surf's Up or 'Til I Die.

    • @EllawoodBlues
      @EllawoodBlues 7 лет назад +2

      TimeToGetAlone nicely said. Til I Die is so hauntingly beautiful and was a window into the mindset of Brian during that time period. I believe he wrote it after Smile fell apart.

    lol the only way Smiley Smile could be considered a dud is if one only looked at chart performance from 67, if you actually listen to the album it was really ahead of it's time. Not to mention it was retroactively lauded and a lot of critics have said early negative reviews were more a reaction to realising what they were listening to wasn't Smile but rather a stripped down version. I challenge anyone reading this to listen to the Smiley Smile version of Wind Chimes, Little Pad or She's Goin' Bald specifically and tell me they haven't influenced artists from Animal Collective to Fleet Foxes to even avant-garde composers such as Alvin Lucier.

      @marcusbradley6207 4 года назад +2

      Psfork35 I agree that smile is better but in all fairness the two albums cannot really be compared. They’re completely different concepts. Smiley smile is a low fi chilled album which has some amazing tracks. Sure, heroes and villains and good vibrations are taken from smile and there is a distilled version of vegetables and wonderful and fire but they fit on the album and are cool experiments. Then there are new songs like little pad and she’s going bald which are amazing aswell. But yeh Smile is better. It’s a work of art split into movements with mind blowing music. Brian Wilson is up there with Bach and Beethoven in terms of musical ability. What a genius.

And I guess Surf's Up doesn't count for anything either (the titular song is pop masterpeice) and Sunflower... .there's the most poignant Dennis Wilson song ever recorded on that one. Oh and btw SMiLE was eventually released but it's only the most important "unreleased" album of all time so let's not bother mentioning that Brian Wilson brilliantly re-recorded it in the 2000s or that the original recordings were released as "The Smile Sessions". Lack of research and enthusiasm for subject matter is glaringly obvious.

    I had to stop washing the dishes and dry my hands to comment
    You’re literally leaving out the best stuff (except you do mention Pet Sounds and Today)
    Idk how the f I ended up on this video, but kindly never discuss the Boys again unless you’re ready to do it for real.
    You don’t even mention that Pet Sounds is probably the first concept album and probably, at least arguably, the best album ever.
    It’s true Smiley Smile is j a watered down SMiLE, but maybe you could’ve mentioned that? And the brilliance of the Smile Sessions, or Brian’s SMiLE he finally released?
    And you say Friends didn’t sell well...but don’t mention how us Beach Bums (TM)hold it in high regard...then in the 70s...not even a word for Sunflower?! Surf’s Up?! Holland?!
    A highlight of Sunflower has All I Wanna Do, way ahead if its time and is credited as being the forerunner to dream pop/shoe gaze. Also Dennis’ Forever et cetera
    Surf’s Up has some filler, but wasn’t the title track voted best Beach Boys song ever? Isn’t it concerned one of the most brilliant pop songs?
    Not to mention Long Promised Road, a beautiful, atmospheric experience that showcases Carl’s brilliance, same with Feel Flows.
    Let’s not forget Til I Die, which Brian wrote when suicidal, or a Day in the Life of a Tree, both of which put the best emo to shame.
    And Holland...beloved by Tom Petty and Elvis Cosetello...again an album that’s an experience not just a record...
    Carl’s brilliance on The Trader...Of course you could also lend some time to Mt. Vernon and Fairway, a cool little audio tale Brian wrote, and I’m pretty sure the voice he does for the pied piper in it heavily influenced South Park.
    And nothing about Carl and the Passions So Tough or The Beach Boys Love You?!
    Before anyone says any of this is just my opinion, yeah, good. Ok.
    And that’s exactly why it should’ve been included, because anyone who knows the Boys would know this stuff should be part of any discussion of their history.

    I'm not sure I would classify Pet Sounds as a Psychedelic record by any means, its a stunningly great album, but I don't know I could call it psychedelic as the narrator did.

      Charlie and his girls moved in with Dennis. They worked on a Charlie song and ultimately released it but with major lyrics changes, which royally pissed off Manson. It got so bad in that house Dennis abandoned it.

      ***** Beach Boys, Beach Bobs, Beach Men, Beach Otters, who cares. Their music is very different then the Beatles, so it's hard to truly compare one vs. the other.

      +Enzothebaker99 to be fair without the beach boys some of the beatles best music wouldn't have happened. Paul McCartney often says "god only knows" is one of his favorite songs. it's undeniable that the beach boys are extremely important and relevant to today's pop culture and their legacy holds up. Also in 1965 the beach boys were actually rated more popular than the beatles

    Brian Wilson stopped touring somewhere around December 1964. You're making it appear this happened earlier. Glen Campbell, whom you don't mention, replaced Brian Wilson on tour. During 1965, Bruce Johnson joined on a permanent basis, replacing Campbell.

    Have loved The Beach Boys since I received my first album, in the 70’s. Been to a few concerts. Had to bring the kids so that they could hear real music. No ‘R’ ratings, clothes stayed on, no cuss words and lots of harmony!!

    So much of this info is wrong. Good vibrations did not come out the same year as pet sounds. Origionally it was meant to appear on the album, but production time pushed it back to be released as a single in 1966. Pet Sounds was released in 1965. Also, all the beach boys sang including the drummer, Dennis Wilson in the studio so they had 5 part harmony. Not only Brian and Mike as the video stated.Finally, Brian didn't quit touring until 1965 upon having a panic attack on a plane while on tour. well after Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe were released. There are more but those are the big ones.

  • @wildsmiley
    @wildsmiley 12 лет назад

    One day in 1968, Dennis picked up some girls and took them to his place. The girls introduced him to their leader Charlie and the two became friends. Dennis even brought him the Beach Boys studio to record some of his music. One song, 'Cease To Exist', was drastically re-written by Dennis and appeared on the band's '69 album 20/20. This angered Manson and he threatened the life of Dennis' step son. Manson left and months later he orchestrated the murders up on Cielo Drive. That's about it.

  • @wildsmiley
    @wildsmiley 11 лет назад

    Well I DO know that the house on Cielo Drive belonged to music producer and BBs friend Terry Melcher, who had earlier angered Manson for (I think) refusing to produce for him. And Manson I think had been to that house before.

    Have to ask - Wonder what the economic impact of the Beach Boys on California? Had to be tremendous ! Did they ever get any credit for that because before them California was not thought about at all in the Northeast/South and other areas I am sure. It was their songs and sound that exposed so many of us there to say "wow look at that life".
