Wow ! the first car I ever owned. 1969 Pontiac Parisienne convertible in British racing green. 350 4 barrel carb w/ a powerglide two speed transmission . It had drum brakes all around and weight about 3300 lbs ( 1.5 metric tons). It got about 8 mpg and gas was around 15 cents a litre. I miss that car.
Brian is shy and awkward and adorable. Mike is a jerk to Australians. Dennis is thankfully able to answer the surfing question Carl is happy to be involved. Al is... also there.
Back in 1964, who would have dreamed that this interview for an American TV program ("American Bandstand") would still be shown more than half a century later, and in such a way that it is seen by the entire world?

Yes we were very “square” in Australia back then. All our radio and tv personalities had to speak with a snobbish British accent too🤨 As for the surf, it was probably just the right place wrong time.
same in South Africa, where the Beach Boys were as big as the Beatles. When I moved to the 'states in the 80s I couldn't believe how loud and obnoxious the Top40 stations were. I listened to UK-targeted Radio Luxembourg when I lived in Germany and it was but a slightly toned-down take on US radio, so I assumed the Brits too went for that sort of thing. I preferred the more sober, sedate nature of Radio Good Hope, Springbok and 5FM...
@@yossarian6799 A guy named Ernie Sigley from Australia worked as a dj on Radio Luxemburg I think very early 1960s? He passed away in 2021. He often talked about it on his more recent radio announcer stint after several years in TV.
Yeah, got backward Australia right, even LSD did not arrive among us youth until 1969, about 10 years behind the States and we never had a Tim Leary or Ken Kesey but we did have the Beatles and the Moody Blues in 1968 to turn us on. Even the Krishna's never arrived until 1970
It's true, on the Master Tapes for the Shut Down Vol.2 it was called the Fun,Fun,Fun album. I have seen the tracksheets. Brian must have changed it and Al forgot.
Al didn't know the name of the new record, saying fun fun fun but referring to Shut Down, Vol II. This would've been before March of 1964 and before the release of Wendy in July. Also, Beatlemania was just starting to take off.
Brian wrote the he was embarrassed at how straight laced and stiff they looked on this, their first nationwide TV appearance. "...we looked more like golf caddies than rock stars."
The famous "Did you do any surfing while you were there?" question. Dennis Wilson, an actual surfer who was very good, chimes in to save the day.
Brian looked so vulnerable, even then...it's amazing he's lasted until today in a harsh world.

THEY ARE ALL SO CUTE! Dennis especially! Dennis seems so kind and loving and sweet! Poor Al got ignored! 🥺😭 How dare they ignore Al. 😭 He’s awesome! But Dennis tho! Gosh he’s so cute! 🥺🥰
Dennis looks a confident guy, but on interviews, we can see that he's actually shy and cute!! I just love him
PD: Al is very nice too, these guys are awesome
Yes Dennis so cute -- giving off James Dean vibes there. ☺
pretty amazing host like people say letting people be the star and letting them shine! AMAZING HOST AND INTERVIEWER
Was not the only car guy, al owned a 70 hemi cuda and Brian owned multiple vets and Porsche’s , also a 65 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 421.
Dick Clark was amazing
Yeah Mike, Brian is "the biggest one"! And he did write the songs and produce them. Furthermore, you wouldn't have a Deuce Coupe or Surfer Girl to sing about had it not been DENNIS' idea to start with!!!!!!
Pretty sure he knows that and has credited everyone with their accomplishments in the band.
just that little bit was so intense crazy
Wow were they deer in the headlights back then.
Carl is maybe 16 years old here
"who will determine what's done next?" - everyone turns to brian.
Funny to watch how Mike loses his head when Al says the incorrect title of their last album.
Al thought he said single and not album I think.
Overreact much? They all gave him a little ribbing for it. They’re kids.
@@paladin1726 Mike was a "kid" yet he looked like a middle aged dad with two kids, a mortgage and a failing marriage.
It's called HUMILITY. All the Wilson boys had it. It's hard to recognize because it is becoming extinct in our time. Brian is a caring, generous, loving, talented, man, father and grandfather. When you are a genius, people often have misconceptions about you.
People were So Humble and Polite those Days Now We Have TRASH!!!!
LOL sad but true. Soon it will change though :)
Punk movement
Thank you for pointing that out
I'll never get over those drainpipe denims...so tight!
Mike Love has lived his life as a cling-on.
Thank God for The Beach Boys. Great music from a great era.
Mike Love is the uncle of NBA player Kevin Love.
Love them all. So cute! Why can’t we have bands like this today?
And Stan Love was his father who played in NBA
Wow ! the first car I ever owned.
Dennis is thankfully able to answer the surfing question
Carl is happy to be involved.
Al is... also there.
Wow! Apparently this was before celebrities were coached on things like tact, what NOT to say during interviews, etc.
That wouldn't have worked on Mike Love. No filter on that dude.
Back in 1964, who would have dreamed that this interview for an American TV program ("American Bandstand") would still be shown more than half a century later, and in such a way that it is seen by the entire world?
Well as an Aussie I can confirm Australia was a backwater in those days . Mike was being honest . Brutal but honest lol
It was refreshing to hear him being honest instead of spewing the sort of faux- enthusiastic nonsense modern celebs have written for them.
Mike Love was a 63 year old in a young man’s body.
DENNIS WILSON was CUTEEEE!! when he was young 😲🥰😘🎥😎🙏🙏🎤🎺🎹🎧🎸💐💐
The Beach Boys are great. All of the guys are cute, but Brian for me is the cutest.
+Myra1959 ...You "sure", your looking at the right one?? lol : )
+Myra1959 I agree. Brian had something extra that the others did not. Those eyes and smile are just beautiful.
+Helenaville Carl yeah
I know Dennis was the one the girls always screamed for, but I have to agree that there is sure something sweet about the look of Brian. MMM-MMM! And in so many videos, Dennis was completely hidden in the background. Brian looked super shy.
+2Stroke Diesel Power Of course. Brian was so cute.
Yes without a doubt. Gotta be something like that. I mean Brian laid in bed for 1 year, and hand a sandbox put in his living room. Hes doing pretty good these days. I was watching his recent "Pet Sounds" concert on VH-1, and his voice sounded absolutely amazing.
"Little Richard sang it and Dick Clark brought it to life". 50s & 60s Bandstand needs to be dvd!! RIP Dick and (the largely underappreciated) Denny (swoon) & Carl
I always thought Brian was so cute. My favorite one.Hes Young here but always kept his boyish looks even when he was overweight.
we lived only three blocks from the beach boys when we lived in ingle wood. Holland album awsome.
Love this - "How long has this singing been going on!"
Dick a pup there..
Did he have any IDEA of his legacy at that time...
ahaha
One of the cool cats
I loved how the young people back then were so reserved, soft spoken, and respectful. Forget about the youth nowadays.
Yeah, they really weren't xD
Didn’t have dramatic Tv or music culture to influence it
RIP Dick Clark (November 30, 1929 - April 18, 2012), aged 82
RIP Dennis Wilson (December 4, 1944 - December 28, 1983), aged 39
RIP Carl Wilson (December 21, 1946 - February 6, 1998), aged 51
You will be remembered as legends.
When Carl said they get in 2 hours of surfing a day you can tell he didnt want to go to far into the subject lol, none of them surfed but Dennis.
The beach boys were much respected in the uk
This rules RIP Dennis, Carl, and Dick
coolsweetgroovy True
So there's a HQ Don't Worry Baby clip on the shelf. Come on American Bandstand! =)
I love those button down collar shirts , looks very American.
Legend has it that Murry bought them at clearance sale at JCPenny.
I was 8!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Whats awkward???
The greatest rock band of all time, how is that awkward?
Dennis really sounded like Brian back then.
"dennis wilson"... audience cheers
everyone else ... " "
That’s cause there were girls in the audience lol
Yes we were very “square” in Australia back then.
All our radio and tv personalities had to speak with a snobbish British accent too🤨
As for the surf, it was probably just the right place wrong time.
same in South Africa, where the Beach Boys were as big as the Beatles.
They're so cute! They're babies here! And by they I mean the Wilsons :-)
They had such sweet faces.
They areee!! 🥰💜 But what about cute lil Al tho? 🥺💜 He’s adorable! All the BB are soooo adorable! I love them sm!! 🥰💜
Interviewer: “what’s the latest album”
Al: “Fun fun fun”
The rest of the guys: *WhAt?*
It's true, on the Master Tapes for the Shut Down Vol.2 it was called the Fun,Fun,Fun album. I have seen the tracksheets. Brian must have changed it and Al forgot.
@@danerd8978 yeah, by the way it’s an awesome song. I still listen to it mostly in the summer time
@@danerd8978 Al thought Dick Clark was asking about the latest hit single.
Interviewer?! That’s Dick Clark!
RIP DICK CLARK,YOU WILL BE MISSED:')
Al didn't know the name of the new record, saying fun fun fun but referring to Shut Down, Vol II. This would've been before March of 1964 and before the release of Wendy in July. Also, Beatlemania was just starting to take off.
Can you vote him out? Ha! Of course, and none of those beautiful harmonies, brilliant arrangements, and infectious melodies would ever exist!
... it was a rather stupid question to ask. But Dick Clark was an absolute moron, so it should be expected...
@@yossarian6799 if it was going to be an interview that would be one thing, but a couple of lame questions is a waste of air time.
Those guys were 1 hit wonders. They’ll never go anywhere
“Can you vote him up or down if you don’t like his ideas?”
SMiLE has entered the chat…
Brian wrote the he was embarrassed at how straight laced and stiff they looked on this, their first nationwide TV appearance. "...we looked more like golf caddies than rock stars."
