It was good seeing Brian Wilson happy and playing with the group on that first number. He ran into such trouble later in life. As a 13 year old boy living in cold northern Ohio, what the Beach Boys and California represented to me was almost mythical. I wanted to be there someday. 12 years later I was living in northern California and I never looked back.

@Sunrays2020 Fantastic memories. I met many of the bands. We used to go to concerts in Ohio all over the place and up to Detroit. If you wanted to talk to the group you just went backstage. Everybody was very casual and we might smoke a joint with them or something. I met Jimi, Janis, MC5, Ted Nugent, Iggy Pop and the Stooges...so many bands! I think somebody turned on the creativity switch in the '60s because there was so much music being made. The Beatles led the charge. They really started us thinking about life and what the possibilities were. I'm still spreading the message of love and I'm 70. I think we shook up the world, as Muhammed Ali said after his victory over Sonny Liston. The Beach Boys, Mamas & Papas and the Byrds were huge California influences.

This delightful Shindig compilation really shows the Beach Boys in their prime, so healthy, so full of life, young and handsome! Their voices were just phenomenal. These live performances show just how ridiculously talented they all were. Holy cow could Brian hit those high notes! And his voice when he sang Please let me Wonder just melted me. Oh man the way those girls screamed at the Dennis Wilson closeups, lol. You just can't watch this video without smiling. This was a very badly needed pallette cleanser after watching some really depressing later stuff when Brian was so ill and out of it. Ah to be young again!

Mike really kept the crowd going with his dancing and role playing antics. Carl could really play that guitar. as well. Not just a cute face and sweet singing voice. Denny kept that beat going non stop. He must have burned off a thousand calories every concert. If you watch Brian closely as he plays that base you'll realize how effortless he made it look, as if he could play it sleeping. Great bass sound. Brian, genuinly good hearted and divinely gifted. Al and Brian switch falsetto parts quite often but you've got to watch and listen closely to catch it. Super well rehearsed, on key and able to "Rock Your Socks Off"! Oh, how I remember those days when dancing was everything and cars were really something special. The Beach Boys made living life so much fun!

Firefall opened for them (they were great too). But alter that show I will never forget, It went from amazing energy during entire performance, and when stage cleared after the show ended, all of sudden Dennis came out again bare chested with towel around his neck, walked to front of stage bowing to everyone again, as if to say "Good bye".. A couple weeks after that I heard on news he died in diving accident... Haunts me to this day.

Al is replacing David Marks who played rhythm guitar in the first four albums so I've always wondered what the Beach Boys sound like with Dave and Carl instead of al and Carl playing guitar , and unfortunately other than a recording at the Azusa Boys Club which is very early, we have no recordings of the band before David left and Al rejoined. But if you listen to the early albums you hear that Dave and Carl were amazing guitarist together and defined the early Beach Boys sound. Al is fantastic but he was essentially a folk guitarist and he's doing his best here to try to keep up with that early Beach Boys sound but it's not something he contributed to or had composed. In fact he's a better bassist, so if you want to hear a fantastic bass part, listen to Al on don't worry baby among other beachboy tracks. Boy their history is complicated but there's no doubt that they are rocking here in this configuration as well.

Yes always great to see Brian In the young days.
It’s hilarious how all the girls scream every time the camera shows Dennis.
    Haha big grin from him.
Wow. That’d give you a big ego eventually wouldn’t it ? And if a no / you’d be so used to hearing yes that you couldn’t cope with it. Guess he did as good as he could do.
I like him very much & admire his work with The Beach Boys & music after that. ♥️ Personally I think he was underrated with his music skill.

When you see Brian playing bass on "Help Me Rhonda" he's actually playing to Carol Kaye's bass playing. Brian was producing this tune and fighting with his dad during the session.

Actually, Brian wrote the bass line for “Help Me Ronda”, (later remade as “Rhonda”), before he even wrote the song. Carol has said in interviews that Brian was the only producer who had the music charts written out for the musicians when they arrived at sessions.

Also a short video of surfing safari with David on guitar, and the band still wearing their Pendleton shirts....

Interesting production. I was born in 1975, so I definitely missed this. It’s interesting how they use backing tracks for some of the songs, but not all of them… and on the ones they use tracks on, they kinda double them live. I think this was the early days of live performances on TV and they were experimenting with how to do it most effectively. American Bandstand didn’t use any actual live audio on their performances. This is like 50/50. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when this was being taped. It’s featured on the opening of the film “Love & Mercy”.
