In 1968, when when drummer Bill Bruford was invited to join a new band that was forming called 'Yes', he was immediately impressed with the group's vocal harmony, saying "this is obviously a vocal group, just like The Beach Boys...". Clearly The Beach Boys style influences not just pop bands but also reached across pog rock groups as well.
Fun fact: the band played a song written by Charles Manson when he was in music and the drummer Dennis was particularly decent friends with him and his credit was omitted
There is also a song on 20/20 where you can hear someone literally having sex at the very very end of the song (you have to turn up the volume a lot but once you hear it you can’t unhear it)

Hey, nice video! I appreciate the research that was put into it. As a super mega Beach Boys fan however I’d like to engage in some pedantry. - The statement that the Beach Boys essentially formed in 1958 is a bit odd and inaccurate. Around that time Brian formed a little doo-wop high school band Carl & the Passions for one show (the one pictured around 0:42). I'm not even certain David Marks lived next door to the Wilsons in 1958, and he definitely wasn’t playing guitar with them considering he was only 9 at the time! The Beach Boys themselves wouldn't start until 1960/61, when both Mike and Al started pestering Brian about making music together. - Actually the other Beach Boys didn’t even want Dennis in the band, perceiving him as young and unruly with no apparent talent for music. It was actually the Wilsons’ mother Audree who persuaded them out of fear he’d feel excluded. - It’s true that Surfin’ Safari was demoed with Hite & Dorinda Morgan before they signed to Capitol. However the April 19, 1962 session you spoke of occurred after they were already on their roster. It was a Capitol-funded session produced by Nick Venet which resulted in the final recording we all know and love. - The liner notes that you show at around 4:13 are from some weird modern reissue of Surfin’ Safari, of which there are loads (that album has been languishing in fuzzy public domain purgatory for about a decade now). - The pictures at 4:40 are additional pictures of the band recording their first album! They’re from September 6, 1962 specifically. You can see in the top right that the boys are pictured with Andrea Carlo who provided the female spoken vocals in the song County Fair. - I don’t believe that Dennis was partaking in drugs as early as 1963. The band would have been under the watchful eye of Murry at almost all times while on tour, which meant that even a sip of a beer would result in a penalty. - The timeline is a bit confusing so I don’t blame you for getting this wrong, but Al didn’t rejoin in 1964 with the express purpose of replacing David. In fact, the band existed as a six-piece with Al and David co-existing for a few months before the latter left. Al just saw how much moolah he was missing out on while at dentistry school and did everything in his power to rejoin basically. - It’s true that the Beach Boys released an EP on Capitol in the US in 1964… but it’s not the one pictured in the video. That sleeve belongs to a French EP which compiled random tracks from Shut Down, Vol. 2 and All Summer Long. The US one, Four by the Beach Boys, was also a compilation of previously released tracks, but a more thoughtful one, since the label wanted to push the tracks Wendy and Little Honda without oversaturating the singles market. - The 41-piece orchestra that were brought on to work on The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album was conducted by Dick Reynolds, not Brian. They also weren’t brought on to bring Brian and Mike’s songs to life, since they only played on their covers of Christmas standards. - Help Me Ronda was not a single off of the Beach Boys Today! Four singles off one album would have been ludicrous in 1965! The hit version that went #1 was Help Me Rhonda (notice the H), the re-recorded, truncated version off the band’s next album. - Don’t forget Caroline, No was a single off Pet Sounds as well (released as a Brian Wilson solo single strangely)! - You claim Smiley Smile was notable for Brian stepping back to let Mike and Carl take the songwriting reins. This is totally wrong! As you correctly said earlier the majority of Smiley Smile was just re-recorded versions of Smile tracks, meaning Brian not only wrote all the music on the album, he helmed the entire production of it in his home! Carl on the other hand wrote absolutely nothing on the record. Brian would continue to be the driving force behind their records all the way until the 20/20 sessions in 1968. Even the follow-up to Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, only featured one song conceived by someone other than Brian (When She Boogalooed It). - It’s true that Mike was easily the most outspoken student of the Maharishi’s teachings, but the Friends album was still helmed entirely by Brian and was inspired by the entire band’s (varying degrees of) interest in Transcendental Meditation. - Brian having "little involvement" with the band following his release from the psychiatric hospital in 1968 is pretty much false. The 20/20 sessions took place mostly while he was in the hospital, so of course he had a decreased role in that album overall. Because of that experience, the band shifted to a more democratic dynamic by the time they began recording the Sunflower album, but Brian was still heavily involved with the writing and production of about half of the tracks! After Sunflower tanked, yeah, he started to check out a little bit. - 20/20 wasn’t the band trying to return to their older sound at all outside of the throwbacky lead single Do It Again. The majority of the album was the exact opposite, the band trying to make a name for themselves in the world of modern pop music, experimenting with hard rock, bubblegum, baroque pop, etc. It’s also strange that you mentioned Bluebirds Over the Mountain - a huge flop! - as a notable single and not I Can Hear Music, which was a pretty big hit by late 60s Beach Boys standards! - You say that Brian was "barely contributing" prior to the making of Holland. While it’s true that his involvement was significantly decreased, he was the brains behind both of the So Tough singles you mention seconds earlier! - Brian hadn’t exactly cleaned up his act by the time of the Brian’s Back campaign. I think he was still just as into coke and alcohol as he ever was! He was just doing it backstage instead of in his bedroom. It also wasn’t the first time he’d performed with the group since 1964. He had appeared with them sporadically all throughout 1965-1974. But yes, it was the first time he toured with the group regularly since '64. - Adult/Child was pretty much a Brian solo project. I don’t think Carl and Dennis were any more enthused with it than Mike and Al. - Brian was absolutely not having a blossoming solo career in 1985 considering he wouldn’t debut as a solo artist until 1987!! Unless you count the aforementioned Caroline, No single. - The band weren’t leaving Brian behind on Still Cruisin’. By this time Brian’s solo career actually had blossomed, and his therapist/manager Eugene Landy was barring him from getting involved with the Beach Boys very much, eager to prove that he could be a self-sufficient artist. - Nothing technically wrong about the Mike v. Brian lawsuits bit, but it should be noted that the Wouldn’t It Be Nice memoir is infamous for not having been written by Brian at all! Which makes the defamation suit that much more sad and ridiculous. - Brian technically has the production credit on the That’s Why God Made the Radio album, but I think it’s understood that Joe Thomas did most of the actual work there. Overall, though, cool video! I can tell this was made by a fellow Beach Boys enthusiast, so from one to another, thanks for giving me something to do for an hour on a sleepy Sunday morning!
My sister played Endless Summer all the time when I was little. That’s a good collection of some of there greatest hits. You should listen to that album for a good introduction to their music.
favorite beach boys songs include please let me wonder, surf’s up, darlin’, busy doin’ nothin’, this whole world, all i wanna do, feel flows, a day in the life of a tree, til i die, big sur, and the night was so young. their era from ‘67 to ‘77 is so ridiculously underrated
One of my fave songs was "Heroes and Villains," the reason being it was included in the film Fantastic Mr. Fox. Not only did I love that movie, the song had a tune, beat, and melody I adored. Great song.
2:57 Al Jardine actually didn’t leave because of that, he left to pursue a “career” in law because that’s what all of his family was doing so he felt pressured and felt like he had to.
Thank you! This is one of my favorite bands, and I’ve loved these videos for the last year. Do you think you could do a video on Beastie Boys at some point? I really don’t think they get enough credit (outside their hits) for how incredible they were, and how important in music history (what you focus on). They had the first hip hop album to go #1 and everything, and it would be so great if you could eventually make a video on this. Thanks again!
This is an amazingly well put together video considering all the misinformation surrounding the band! One thing I want to point out though is that Smiley Smile, (as well as Wild Honey and Friends), were 100% spearheaded by Brian and he was absolutely not on the sidelines for that.
This has gotten spooky. I a gen z person, who loves music from 60/80/90s.. but i don't really have an older person to introduce me to the bands and the music so i just wait for RUclips to recommend me some stuff and it works out well, i have gotten introduced to many stuff like this. What's spooky is, i only got to know about the band police and the artist sting some 5-6 months ago and then soon your video pops up. And now only today i decided to listen to beach boys, and as soon as i search them i got your video on them.
Today I learned that one of my absolute favorite RUclipsrs makes deep dive videos all about one of my absolute favorite things… good music. Good music, history, all blended together by Mr. Beat? It’s just too good!
In the summer of 1969, the Beach Boys played at Steel Pier in Atlantic City, and my friend and I worked at a small, outdoor boardwalk custard stand. Right as we we closing up one night (midnight), this group of dirty, barefoot, stoners came up and wanted milkshakes. I said no...we were closed. I wanted to leave. One of the other workers said "That's Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys!!" GASP! And I said "I don't care!" but she made them shakes. I was pissed! Manson was in that group, although we didn't know that at the time (really short guy 😂). Also three of his girls for Dennis. I wonder if I came close to being whacked that night! In my vinyl collection, I have the following original Beach Boy 45's in their original covers: "Wouldn't It Be Nice/"God Only Knows; "California Girls"/"Let Him Run Wild" (B&W photos); "Help Me Rhonda"/"Kiss Me Baby"; "Don't Worry Baby"/"I Get Around; "Please Let Me Wonder"/"Do You Wanna Dance"; "When I Grow Up (to be a man)"/She Knows Me Too Well"; and "Dance, Dance, Dance"/"The Warmth Of The Sun". I also have the original "Beach Boys Christmas Album". Still enjoy "Little Saint Nick" and used to play the album every Christmas. Thanks for a great video! Really brought back wonderful memories.
Since you just covered The Beach Boys, I thinl you should cover Jan and Dean next. They were friends and direct contemporaries in the same styles. Can you please do Jan and Dean next? By the way one of my many favorite Beach Boys sangs is called "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" a Dennis Wilson song. I also love the entire Brian Wilson version of "Smile".
20/20 is one of my favourites. Time to get alone never gets old. Makes you feel like you’re on shrooms even when you’re not and makes you feel the love the Wilsons had for the world
I grew up in a lot of turmoil. In My Room always got to me. You just close your door and you have a world where you can tell your secrets to. The Beach Boys reunion tour with Brian at Garden State Arts Center (Holmdel NJ) was my first concert, Christopher Cross opened for them. I had the fortune of seeing them again years later in Mahwah NJ with the freaking Village People opening for them. Looks like they really.. got around. I had never heard about the R&R Hall of Fame speech.. yeesh. Great Video
I didn’t think Mr. Beat was so hip. Great video, The Beach Boys are legends. Side note, I would call it a misconception that Brian was uninvolved for the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey/Friends era. Although his ambition had dropped wildly, he was still undoubtedly at the helm. Especially Friends, that album was his baby.
Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums ever made and deserves all of its praise and recognition. Every song is like a different journey, a different emotion. Brian the tortured genius.
Okay, I just love the song “Darling” - there is a live version they recorded while touring Britain that I found in a bargain record bin a long time ago. So good.
You cant talk about the Beach Boys without mentioning the Smile Sessions which are the actual recordings the Beach Boys worked on in 1967 for the album Smile... theres a magical energy in the tapestry of those recordings which remains unmatched in the rest of their discography, and it kind of changed my life listening to it. I have no idea how people would have reacted to it had it been released in '67, however 😅
My favorite band of all time. Great lore video, although for those interested their is a great amount of wacky stuff that happened in their history (look up the apple juice incident or "Smart Girls"). My favorite Beach Boys album is either Pet Sounds or SMiLE, with my favorite song being Surf's Up or Wouldn't It Be Nice. I love these guys
Nice video - The No 1 hit version of Help Me Rhonda is on the Summer Days album - some of the so-called flops you mentioned such as the Friends and Wild Honey albums are now considered Lo-fi masterpieces - here in the UK some Beach Boys singles were big hits unlike in the USA - in the UK Do it Again was no 1, Darlin’, Wild Honey, Cottonfields, I Can Hear Music were all big hits unlike in the USA - although later Beach Boys albums were not that good compared with their earlier ones they still contained some good tracks!
So much made-up crap just to punch out a video. As an example (11:44), the Beatles were way bigger than the Beach Boys in America from the second they first set foot in the country. The fact that Brian could keep the band a close second through 1966 was almost miraculous. But of course, he couldn't keep it up all by himself, and so inevitably, the band faded as an important musical group right after that.
My number one is Pets Sounds. 2 is Sunflower. 3 is All Summer Long, with my favorite song I Get Around. A lot of great songs are off this album. Wendy, Drive In, Do You Remember?, We'll Run Away, and the title track. Today is 4 and Surf's Up at 5.
I really hope you do a video on Talk Talk, one day, their story is fascinating. They completely transformed themselves from synthpop to the inventors of post-rock by the time they broke up, and they released my favourite album of all time. It would be a fitting tribute to Mark Hollis.

I can tell this was made by a fellow Beach Boys enthusiast, so from one to another, thanks for giving me something to do for an hour on a sleepy Sunday morning!
i love how casually you dropped 22(ish) corrections in a single comment (and also saved me from noting some of that myself, thx)
I love The Beach Boys. My grandma gave me a few of their records and i listen to them all the time!
Your grandma sounds like a cool lady.
My sister played Endless Summer all the time when I was little. That’s a good collection of some of there greatest hits. You should listen to that album for a good introduction to their music.
Smile Sessions is one of my favourite pieces of art ever
favorite beach boys songs include please let me wonder, surf’s up, darlin’, busy doin’ nothin’, this whole world, all i wanna do, feel flows, a day in the life of a tree, til i die, big sur, and the night was so young. their era from ‘67 to ‘77 is so ridiculously underrated
I thoroughly appreciate how you read exclamation points 😂
Finally someone commented about this. ha!
One of my fave songs was "Heroes and Villains," the reason being it was included in the film Fantastic Mr. Fox. Not only did I love that movie, the song had a tune, beat, and melody I adored. Great song.
Wild Honey is actually on the rolling stone 500 album. I think the 1965-1971 period was awesome tbh.
2:57 Al Jardine actually didn’t leave because of that, he left to pursue a “career” in law because that’s what all of his family was doing so he felt pressured and felt like he had to.
I thought he wanted to be a dentist.
Been waiting for a beach boys video from you
Great video! Been looking forward to this one…
So, when’s the Grateful Dead video?
This is an amazingly well put together video considering all the misinformation surrounding the band! One thing I want to point out though is that Smiley Smile, (as well as Wild Honey and Friends), were 100% spearheaded by Brian and he was absolutely not on the sidelines for that.
Smile is an insane album
This has gotten spooky. I a gen z person, who loves music from 60/80/90s.. but i don't really have an older person to introduce me to the bands and the music so i just wait for RUclips to recommend me some stuff and it works out well, i have gotten introduced to many stuff like this.
What's spooky is, i only got to know about the band police and the artist sting some 5-6 months ago and then soon your video pops up.
And now only today i decided to listen to beach boys, and as soon as i search them i got your video on them.
19:30 Correction. Surfs Up was their most successful since Wild Honey.
excellent video mr beat
Thank you!
my fav beach boys album is a tie between the smile sessions and sunflower! also, well done on the video! it was amazing.
Getcha Back is my favorite song
Always been a huge Beach Boys fan crazy to see Mr Beat just now make a video on them! Amazing!
I'd love a video on the Kinks! Love this and your other channel btw!
24:01 "Nah guys, this music is just too strange… But that said, let's put the strangest one on our next album!" (Hey Little Tomboy)
Am so happy you finally made a video about the beach boys
Today I learned that one of my absolute favorite RUclipsrs makes deep dive videos all about one of my absolute favorite things… good music. Good music, history, all blended together by Mr. Beat? It’s just too good!
My very first record when I was 9 years old was a best-off-Beach-Boys. I saw them 5 years ago in Frankfurt. Still love their music until today.
awesome topic i wouldnt have ever cared to look into this history! Matt Beat level quality video
Omggggg, I've been waiting for this for so long!!
I'd like a video on them, too. A dead man's curve tragedy.
Just saw “The Beach Boys” in Long Island, Mike love and Bruce Johnston stil sound great and the musicians they have supporting them are top notch.
You did not see the Beach Boys. You saw a Beach Boys tribute band fronted by Mike Love.
Please make videos about:
Journey
Fleetwood Mac
ELO
Chicago
Boston
David Bowie
Daryl hall and John Oates
Def Leopard
And guns and roses!!!
Second on ELO. One of the best bands ever
IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS EPISODE
I've always loved your video and teaching style across all of your videos!
My suggestion for a future band ti cover would be the Bee Gees.
Great suggestion! And thank you so much! 🙂
20/20 is one of my favourites. Time to get alone never gets old. Makes you feel like you’re on shrooms even when you’re not and makes you feel the love the Wilsons had for the world
i was HOPING youd make one about the beach boys!! id love to see one about stevie wonder someday
Looks like they really.. got around.
I had never heard about the R&R Hall of Fame speech.. yeesh. Great Video
I hope you make a AC/DC video. I love to watch your videos. Your a pretty good story teller.
Been waiting for this one!!!Would love an episode on The Who soon!
Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums ever made and deserves all of its praise and recognition. Every song is like a different journey, a different emotion. Brian the tortured genius.
Thank You It Was Worth The Wait :)
"Surf's Up" is my favorite Beach Boys song. It is just so hauntingly beautiful.
Love these videos, hope to see more in the future. Would love to see one on a Prog rock or heavy metal band. 👍🏼
I appreciate your comment!
Okay, I just love the song “Darling” - there is a live version they recorded while touring Britain that I found in a bargain record bin a long time ago. So good.
Let’s GOOOOOO, i’ve been waiting for this one!
Can we get one on The Cure or Dire Straits please? Loved this one!
I'm currently obsessed with Gordon Lightfoot's stuff so I would love a video about him.
Thank you, Mike Love, for creating music as we know it.
im obsessed with them! caroline no is my absolute favorite song from them.
Had no idea about the Beach Boys - John Stamos link.
I have no idea how people would have reacted to it had it been released in '67, however 😅
Great video Mr Beat.
I love the Beach Boys
I've wanted you to make this video for forever
Bluebirds over the Mountain is not a "stand out single" on 20/20, You could have mentioned I Can Hear Music instead.
"California Girls" gave me inspiration all through puberty...couldn't have faced my teenage years without it.
Are you Mr beat the guy who talks about politics and government
My favorite band of all time. Great lore video, although for those interested their is a great amount of wacky stuff that happened in their history (look up the apple juice incident or "Smart Girls"). My favorite Beach Boys album is either Pet Sounds or SMiLE, with my favorite song being Surf's Up or Wouldn't It Be Nice. I love these guys
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS‼️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice video - The No 1 hit version of Help Me Rhonda is on the Summer Days album - some of the so-called flops you mentioned such as the Friends and Wild Honey albums are now considered Lo-fi masterpieces - here in the UK some Beach Boys singles were big hits unlike in the USA - in the UK Do it Again was no 1, Darlin’, Wild Honey, Cottonfields, I Can Hear Music were all big hits unlike in the USA - although later Beach Boys albums were not that good compared with their earlier ones they still contained some good tracks!
_Pet Sounds_ was their 11th LP and released four years after their first, and they still wrote most of their own songs? That is an insane output!
love the vids, keep em coming!!!
I was literally looking for a video essay on The Beach Boys, common Mr Beat W
My favorite albums are Pet Sounds Surf’s Up or Today! and Cabinessence or California Girls
