( Nicky D)
My god, this is so wrong. Carol Kaye should be receiving a share of the royalties for all the music she created. She as others were totally exploited. What a humble talented soul.
Sounds like these use the terminology "invent" the part, to avoid calling it "writing" and thus having to credit them as writers. No royalties for "inventing"- just royalties for "writing".
@mike sixx If they came up with the hook that made the music a hit, maybe it should be considered. On another note, artists that create hits with loops of these great talents receive all the royalties. It's basically editing. It's the way the system works, but in what universe is that fair?
Firstly - if she's a studio musician - that is what she's paid for - that is the job. Secondly - Carol Kaye has stated on interview that they were making more money than the president .. now that may be an analogy - but it certainly does not sound like she feels like they were being hard done by .. And I cannot see - without any other info to the contrary - they were being "exploited" .. by her own admission - they were making more money in a day than they'd make in a week on the road .. If I design a game and contract someone to do the art - and the game is successful - the artists who delivered on their contracts should not now feel that they are entitled to a part of the profits of the game .. I'm not saying that each and every one of "the wrecking crew" did not significantly enhance or in some cases define the sounds or songs of the people they "supported" - but that was the job and they did it gladly and to say that they were "exploited" seems somewhat ridiculous to me. Certain members of "The wrecking Crew" - most notably Glen Campbell and Elvis Costello went on to have very successful solo careers. Carol - by her own admission - was tired of the music they were making and went off to do other things ..
Yeah, she got away from the “amateurs” who gave her the most money she ever made, so she could go on to.... uh... being someone who isn’t famous, and whose talent is overshadowed by their arrogance. What was the part of that you consider ‘the right move’?
@@jamescarter3196 so she should have continued to play on shit after shit and become less and less happy every week because she was not being true to herself , go listen to someone famous considering you think that means more than the music
Carol is no doubt a legend is the studio musician world, but not so well know outside it. The employee's you could tell weren't even alive when Carol Kaye did most of her most prominent musical work. Not knowing the backstory I'd imagine the studio would welcomed her in to look around if the had made some sort of arrangement beforehand.
They really should have made an appointment to visit. I don't think it's reasonable to expect to just walk in unannounced and start looking around, especially with a camera crew. The studio undoubtedly have people recording and things going on which they don't want to be disturbed.
First exactly, it’s pretty unreasonable to walk in and expect them to treat you like royalty and then make passive aggressive remarks when you don’t get your way
Carol never got the recognition she really deserves for all the work she did on so many albums . Because she was "only" a studio musician , the public never got to know the really talented musician that she is. Without her playing those albums wouldn't have sounded so perfect. It's a shame as she was beautiful as well as talented & could've easily fronted a band that did as well as those who she only appeared as a studio musician . I have a deep respect & admiration for this woman .
To be fair, it was her job to play in the session, not take credit. She understood that. Also she didn’t compose the music. She might’ve added her instrument part but she was not a writer
Try watching the video this time. She said none other than Quincy Jones left her parts blank because he knew she could improvise her parts on the fly. So, yes, she was a writer. I'm not sure what you are. Clueless would be my guess.
As is clear from her statements in the video, Carol Kaye actually was not a big fan of the pop rock styles at the time. She was a jazz musician and she liked playing jazz, but you weren't going to make platinum top 40 records in 1969 cutting bebop records. As the rock scene changed, she also had a hard time getting regular work as more artists stopped using session musicians and preferred to play the instruments themselves. She started working on soundtracks and she enjoyed doing that.
fucking dumbass Belmont University interns, I guarantee it. i went to Belmont, and have recorded in that studio.....the people they put at reception don't know shit from shenanigans.
No, that isn’t ‘truth’ because she was whining out of hurt pride after she did something stupid. What was being recorded? Who was in that studio? You don’t have a clue, and the stupid whining about ‘why don’t you think I’m famous’ is something that makes people look really pathetic, just like ‘I’m a big fan of hers so everybody who doesn’t know about her is stupid’. Want a studio-musician quiz? You’ll lose.
Hello There She tried taking credit for many James Jamerson basslines . She played a lot of stuff but she is kinda nutty for recognition it seems to me.

MrSteve280 ...Carol doesn't have a recognizable face...lucky her I say. Very few people would know her now and the only reason I know of her is that I've read a fair amount about the session musicians in L.A. I’m a bassist and songwriter from way back - huge fan of Carol Kaye. The ironic thing this is that nobody needs a record company or recording studio anymore. Andthey’re almost all out of business because you can do at your own place right here on songs put it on RUclips and be self-sufficient. So some people snub the technology but it’s done wonders for the singer songwriter. I used to pay $50-100 an hour at little local studios to lay down a song ( or parts of one) in a few hours. Now I can do 16 to infinite tracks at home on my own time - and fix them , retrace them digitally etc and without the heavy expensive and hard to program analog gear like in the old days . I do miss analog sound and process sometimes but the tools are so amazing - even with auto tune and chat gpt - they are tools to aid us - and then we correct and add our stamp and thoughts to it.

I agree she's amazing
Yep. It sucks that the song writers get all the money but the musicians who made it worth listening to don't gets hit.
This woman is a treasure and deserves much respect for her playing and creativity.
This was a perfect example of why she made the right moves when she did, to get away from these amateurs! CAROL KAYE...LEGEND!!!
Did you see her giving Gene Simmons a lesson on the bass?
Yeah, she got away from the “amateurs” who gave her the most money she ever made, so she could go on to.... uh... being someone who isn’t famous, and whose talent is overshadowed by their arrogance. What was the part of that you consider ‘the right move’?

That Studio's Management and Staff should be ashamed of themselves. How disrespectful.
They have no idea who she is.
They should have shot themselves in the head as a sign of respect.
No.
Same for the Funk Brothers who backed most of the early Motown recordings

She is absolutely right what she said. Carol is a legend involved in making some of the best music ever show her some respect.
disgusting how she was treated at the end
couldn't they at least give her a chance and show her some respect?
they probably didn't even know who she was!
I have always loved these bass lines. Never knew one person was single handedly responsible for them all. Amazing stuff.
She was musically brilliant enough and likable and smart enough to have done very well at the right time in an industry that sucks and burns artists out and throws them away. Bravo to her! Her contributions will last generations.
Don't feel bad Carol, these young fools probably didn't even know who Sam Cook was!
I remember hearing about the Three Stooges being denied entrance into Columbia Studios after 30 years with the studio!
Cooke with an e
God, it’s pathetic how some people are trying so hard to feel smart about knowing who Carol is, that you’re just making up silly shit that means nothing. If the Three Stooges didn’t work there then they should be denied RANDOM entry just like this studio did with Carol. She planned badly. That’s nobody else’s fault but hers and the film crew. They probably went along with her arrogance about it, like the doors would open and the wine would start flowing and all the old buddies would be there. You want to speculate, mine’s better than yours.
@@jamescarter3196 Read it again. What he said, Mr Dumbia, is they WORKED for Columbia! Just as Carol worked with Ocean Way Recording studios. She worked with some of their biggest stars that helped the studio get where it is today. But neither Columbia or Ocean Way worked with Jethro Tull, who wrote the song "Thick as a Brick", which seems to describe you.

Actually he's got a point. If you're not currently employed in a workplace, an owner, or a client of it, you cannot simply walk in off the street and demand entry. Doesn't matter how much history you've got there. Now, most places can be quite accommodating if you arrange something with them ahead of time. But to simply walk in and demand entry is unreasonable at best, criminal at worst.
I'm technically a "millennial", but I definitely love the music and culture of the 60's and early 70's... However this thread is showing me for the gazillionth time something must have gone terribly wrong because most babyboomers ended up being frustrated self-entitled "can I speak to your manager"-type old sour tarts.
Yes, she probably made a lot of money for that studio decades ago, but she also always had an easily replaceable role and a LOT of people that were/are a LOT more important made/make that studio a lot of money as well. There is no excuse for waddling in unannounced with a passive-aggressive entitled attitude expecting everybody to instantly drop everything for her. Respect is earned and she surely didn't earn any respect with that attitude
Keep on teaching all of us these valuable musical lessons. We need to hear it.
Thank you so much. So inspired to keep on playing my guitar
Are you kidding me!!! They didn't let her in!!!
Jeez, the same kind of ignorant stupidity when the bouncer at Tygar's(?) post Grammy party wouldn't let Paul McCartney and Beck in.
They were working at that time.
Easy solution: Call ahead, make an appointment, show the interviewer around (the interviewer should have called ahead). Shes also mostly a session musician so it isnt really surprising that they wont recognize her. Its not like Freddie Mercury walked in.
J listen, ignorant young dweeb, have you ANY idea whatsoever as to the work this woman participated and is credited for?
Your sheer stupidity is baffling.
J, yes they were working, but they could have said, look come back at blah blah blah. But they didn't, they had no clue who she was and that's what's sad because if I go to work for a company, I want to know it's history. Now true, the "producers" should have made arrangements, but imagine if Elvis were alive and he went to Sun Studios with a film crew and some idiot said no were busy with a tour you can't come in.
Nic Lira and then there are people who work somewhere because they need work, there are people who dont know every musician ever. And then there are people who are stressed,... We know nothing about these people and their current circumstances. And your comparison to Elvis is just the same as it is with my comparison to Freddie Mercury. Carol Kaye is not Elvis.
Sad that she didn't get the credit she deserved. What an amazing artist ❤
I love how sweet she is but still has a sassy side to her. Reminds me of my grandma.
You're a legend Carol. And you were a huge part in making Rock and Roll and R&B magic.
Amen!
"I made a lot of money for this studio, you know." So sad that these office drones didn't realize they were in the presence of one of the greatest studio musicians who ever lived.
@Aaron A420 What is truly sad is people like you who feel the need to inflate their own sense of self-importance by denigrating the achievements of others.
@Aaron A420 "Just" a session player? Good God, the more you comment the more clear it is how clueless you are about the actual production of music. If she had been replaceable, they would have replaced her, as she was commanding a very high rate in her heydey. They paid because her talent and creativity WERE irreplacable, and you can be damn sure she contributed as much to the success of the music she played on as much as Bernard Purdie (another session musician Im sure youve never heard of, being a young disrespectful punk) did. Imagine "Home at Last" without Purdie on the kit-it would not be worth listening to without the Purdie shuffle there.
Imagine being so ignorant that you think art, which by its very nature is unique, could have its creative components replaced and still be the same. Good music is good because of creative talent-take the talent out and the music is no longer good.
@Aaron A420 Actually, at this point I am 100% certain I have spent more time in a pro studio than you have. You have absolutely convinced me of your ignorance on the topic. Nobody is putting her on a pedestal-she put herself there. She built that damn pedestal, and it is made out of stacked gold records and more studio time playing for greats-who requested her by name because they recognized her as a fellow great-than you will ever have in your wildest dreams. And I'm sure you do have dreams of working in a pro studio someday given how much of a clearly fake tryhard you're being here, but with the level of respect you're displaying they will always be just that-dreams.
Sad
@Aaron A420 The fact that you have to spend writing paragraph after paragraph validating yourself tells me you need to go get a really big pick-up truck with testicles hanging from the trailer hitch, because you're clearly insecure in your lifetime of failures. Calling Carol, "just a session player" is like calling Glenn Campbell, "just a session player", after all, he was in the same group. You have taken asshole to an epic level. Bye, Skippy.
She's a legend!
Wow! If there was one famous person I would want to spend the day with it would be Carol Kaye. This woman defines cool! Her personality and stories she has to tell are just amazing, not to mention her great musical talent.
Amazing human being and her contributions to music speak for themselves.
Carol Kaye- Champion and Legend
She wasn't nearly forceful enough at that studio. The last known survivor of a byegone era being treated as if she is some tourist?
with a name like hawk no surprise youre a douchebag
Like she said, they’re probably recording garbage anyway. (I’m paraphrasing)
@monokhem Roll over and buy another Justin Bieber album, fool.
@monokhem sorry but can't compare the beach boys ( and i dont like them much) or sam cooke to the biebers of today, also, she wrote parts for the music which became staples in popular music, that is hardly just playing back up
@monokhem lol oh wow you never heard him plagiarizing chuck berry? it is a well known fact but if you want to stay in denial so be it lol
That was disgusting. It would be like Jeanie Knight, King Floyd or James Stroud walkng back into Malaco and getting turned away. But the guys at Malaco would never do that.
BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics "We're the ones who made this studio..."
Carol Kay is absolutely music royalty...! 🤘🏾
Dang straight, she is royalty ! Like Steve Cropper at Stax.
BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics No doubt...Colonel "Play it" Steve Cropper is one of my all time favorites. Real nice guy too.
As is James Burton, our hometown player. Shot a video from my boat, on the lake out behind his house recently. Going to get more footage this weekend. Maybe we can get James to come outside if he's home. He's a VERY nice guy! Always willing to stop and chat.
BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics No doubt. JB is a picking beast. Guess what he and Steve Cropper have in common?
They are both Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, amazing session guys, and they both laid down iconic music while playing Teles... 🤘🏾
Yes she was a great studio musician, I wouldn't expect they would let someone with a camera crew to walk in unannounced. She should have called ahead...yes they should have gone to the back to someone who may have known her from the old days but they didn't. Ms. Kaye line about making the studio a lot of money back in the day is priceless.
In some country they would've bowed down and kissed the ground she walked on. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world Ms. Kaye.
Carol Kaye walks in and they throw her out?!
Bastards!
