  • "Most Lovely Country" is a quote from Captain George Vancouver's journal of May 1792 as he lay off of Burrard Inlet.
The film was created as an educational film for the 1958 BC Centennial. It was sponsored by Imperial Oil meaning there is a lot of focus on cars and the petroleum industry. This is only a bit more than two generations ago but the attitudes towards the world around us have dramatically changed. This gives me some hope.
Famed City of Vancouver archivist Major J.S, Matthews is seen in the first minutes of the film
    An Imperial Oil Presentation.
    Story by: Margaret Ecker Francis.
    Direction: Lew Parry.
Cinematography: Jack McCallum and Bill Roozenboom
    Sound Lock Johnston
Narrators: John Sherman and Ian Thorne
    Film Editor: Norma Jackson

1958: Canadian aviation enthusiasts fell in love with the Avro Arrow. 1958 also is near demise of the Coquihalla CPR subdivision in lower BC.

Thank you for adding this video. My grandfather, John Sherman, is one of the narrators.

I lived on San Remo drive just off of IOCO road in Port Moody from 1980 to 1992, at the west end a few of the company built homes and the school still exist amongst the concrete foundations of a few other structures. Very nice to see this, lots of local history I do not know about, thank you for uploading!

Perhaps I missed it, but did the narration mention that 1958 was the centennial of the mainland BC colony’s declaration? That was so widely known at the time with celebrations and such, maybe it was seen as silly to mention. On your point of the generations changing views, 2021 was the 150 anniversary of BC joining Canada, and as near as I can tell, absolutely nothing was done to promote or celebrate it, Covid notwithstanding.

Part ofme things that Imperial Oil made the film bu tdid not want to pay to be allowed to use the logo?
I have been thinking about all the centennials from 1958 to 1986 here in BC and they were almost constant. Since then this sort of celebration has gone by the wayside,

BC has always been a lot more lukewarm about celebrating anniversaries of joining confederation than it has been about celebrating it's own. Joining really was a controversial decision in it's day that even still many British Columbians arent overjoyed about. 1871-1971 wasnt as hugely celebrated as 1858-1958. 125 of confederation went by unnoticed whereas 125 and 150 of BC got celebrated.

"so that British Columbia's youth and future generations might have a prominent link with the past"
And then the Internet happened and the youth and future generations of British Columbia only cared about Instagram posts and Facebook likes.
    We're doomed.

That’s not happening at all, the youth of today are the most highly educated generation ever & they question everything.

Internet can be used to share a lot of information about the past as well as where to find things like ruins, old highways and trails, ghost towns etc.

@@smallstudiodesign "Highly educated?" That explains why the rate of first-year university students requiring remedial education in math keeps going up. Concepts like logic have been denigrated by the current education establishment becasue they don't produce obedient followers for the left or right. "Highly educated?" Not when we have to look overseas for students with the intellectual heft to handle graduate work in science and engineering.
