With the profits the oil industries makes, these spills are preventable and simply should not happen. This industry shows no responsibility with looking after their equipment and governments, not just here in Canada but around the world, impose little if any consequences for these spills. There are thousands of oil spills each year, no need for this. Time for the oil industry to take on some responsibility. Saying sorry is just not enough.

I've witnessed some really spectacularly thorough cleanups paid for by industry. But if the stocks are publicly traded, then it's always just going to be the cost of doing business. It's like all the stores that inflate their prices in the anticipation that there's probably going to be a % loss do to spoilage, theft, bloated expense accounts, etc. Capitalism is structured that way. Do unto them before they do unto you.

The oil isn't the problem, the problem is the chemicals that are injected into the oil. Oil was and still is present at the surface. Gasoline is more hazardous to have spilling onto the ground. Oil doesn't seep into the ground to further contaminate, it sits on top of the soil, only making it through the top few inches of soil. If it is introduced to water systems such as lakes or rivers, that is a problem, but not nearly as bad as the chemicals, sewage, and refuse dumped into our rivers by our other industries, farmers and city waste management that always get ignored.

It actually comes from tar sands and has to be washed and processed the waste water full of toxic chemicals is stored in open pits called tailing ponds it appears to have ruptured it will contaminate everything in the area and when it gets into ground water it's not coming out

Wait! The oil is in the tar sands so they clean it up and then they apologize when they spill it? The way I look at it is every drip removed is one less toxic drip for the environment
