I think the Retired Red Ensign could cover all of North America (except for Mexico because that's Habla Espanol) It isn't clear if the Red Ensign was an official Flag. It is an offshoot of the Queen Anne Red Ensign very much like The Stars and Stripes had been fabricated from. The American Insurrection is an overrated folklore! There is much evidence in history The British decimated The Young USA in the War of 1812 but had struck a deal to help reconstruct but it was Conditional like all contracts to help get someone on Their feet persay. I speak with the ENGLISH Language, the De Facto language of The United States of America. The nation has more Rules, Regulations, Laws & Taxes than any other on Earth, so remind Me How the USA is a "Free Country" again!
Why is there no mention that there was a national open competition in 1964-65 to submit designs for a new flag ? 3,541 designs were submitted. We simply thought Stanley had won the competition fair and square. But perhaps his design was picked in advance as the ' winning ' design. At the time, a lot of Canadians didn't like Stanley's design, but soon almost all of us grew to love it, as we do today.
I am old enough to remember the flag controversy, I was in Grade 5 at the time. I remember what was a famous Duncan McPherson cartoon about it: all the major players, Pearson, Diefenbaker etc were drawn as toddlers playing in a sandbox trying to put their version of the flag on top of a sand castle. Hysterical!!
Maybe as a Yank, I shouldn't be telling our neighbors upstairs what flags they should use, but Pearson had the right idea - the new flag is unique, easily recognizable, and affirms Canada as an independent country. There's many, many, *many* flags that follow the "British Ensign" format of a Union Jack canton and a seal on a blue/red flag. All of them are virtually indistinguishable from a distance, the Red Ensign included. They don't so much give the impression of proud, independent nations as they do continued colonial dependencies, because the only thing that most people are going to be able to recognize from the distance is the British Flag. The way I see it, the Red Ensign defines Canada in relation to the bygone Empire, while the leaf flag defines Canada simply as itself - which as what every good symbol (or flag) should be able to do.
I hope we never forget our roots, French and English. I am glad Canada has our own flag unlike other members of the Commonwealth. The Canadian flag just looks great. The Red Ensign was nice to.
I think all countries that used to be members of the British Empire go through the stage of wanting to get rid of the union Jack from their flag as they grow up. Australia went through that stage too, but did not get around to doing anything about it. With the state of the world today and recent developments towards globalisation over the last few decades many Australians are increasingly proud of their British origins and there is now not quite the same need felt by many people to change the flag to get rid of the Union Jack. Of course there are many who still want to change the flag and become a republic but these aspirations have been put aside for some time now. In fact If there was a referendum to change the flag I don’t think it would be approved. New Zealand recently made a brave attempt to change their flag and they had a competition to select the new design but all the designs were so bad they eventually decided to stay with the current flag with the union Jack on it. I think the Canadian flag design is really good but so far neither Australian nor New Zealand have come up with anything in the same league as it as a possible alternative design, so that might be another reason why we haven’t changed the flag yet.

i'm by no means a staunch supporter of the monarchy, but purely esthetically speaking, i think the previous flag, crest on red background and union jack was a nicer flag. it envokes history of where we came from. the modern flag of the maple leaf is only a symbol of the national tree.
Yes but us the French and new Canadians weren't so fond of it, so Pearson wanted a symbol that everyone could use and give Canadians an identity. When you mention "it envokes history of where we came from", not everyone came from the UK dude, Canada's a country built off different tribes of people. So whether you like it or not, the maple leaf was the best choice for a new Canadian symbol.
computergames5 i disagree, the old flag has the crest where you can find the british lion, irish harp, scottish lion, flours de lys and maple leaf to represent ethnic groups. the canton union jack to remind we are part of the commonwealth. but i do recognize that it was an unpopular flag especially with the french, given the political times, i also understand the urgency and pitch for a more unifying symbol...
indeed, but that really doesn't justify it when you have a union jack that dominated a good chunk of the flag and that really didn't appeal to lots of people back in the day.
computergames5 well, i would counter argue that Canada remains in all ways a constitutional monarchy, with the queen acting as head of state (symbolically of course!) In that context, a flag bearing the Union Jack is appropriate. Changing the flag to do away with our ties to the British Empire ignores that fact. Were it to me, a flag change is applicable once the country opts to become a republic and turns the page on its British Colonial past. In Canada's case this was window dressing since it chose not to reform its parliamentary system.
+Jeddaz EightyOne so every country that is monarchy to Elizabeth II should bare a Union Jack? Not really, once again, it wasn't just English people and scots that occupies the land, and every country deserves a symbol. And even if Canada is a monarchy, most people don't even care about the monarchy as a whole, it's just a symbol. Even then, Canada's British ties is over and it's been like that a long time ago, it's commonwealth memberships grants no extra power to the UK and the queens role as a monarch is completely different than the UK's role. Canadians wanted an identity, and they've created one of the most recognizable well known flags out there.
As a Canadian of only 27 years of age, I regard our Country's current flag as a 'Liberal Flag'. It doesn't swell any Canadian pride within me. Its predecessor is preferable.
+B Strut I mixed on the issue. On the one hand they tried to erase Canada's heritage. On the other, hand www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1363628125362/1363628203744 They literally created a flag whose colours find their meaning from England and France whose colours where taken from the crusades. Which is kinda awesome.
Few people know what it is though. The point of a national flag is to be distinctive and the maple leaf flag is one of the most distinctive in the word
How many people here know that Canada's colours are red and white because those colours represented Frenchman and Briton warriors during the crusades. Canada was born of Europe. www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1363628125362/1363628203744
So because some foreigners didn't like our flag we changed it. Figures. Typically Canadian attitude. Why not erase all symbols of all our history because some group in the world will find offence to it.
The Canadian flag ought to contain some blue and thus be red, white and blue like those of its sibling Anglo-Saxon countries, the UK, USA, Australia and NZ. Blue would also reflect the red, white and blue of its important French heritage and also the dark blue of the lovely blue and white flag of Quebec. There is still time to add blue to the Canadian flag, perhaps with a blue rimmed Maple leaf?
I wonder if there are still people who are upset about the new flag.. I'm sure there must be some older people who remember the change and still hate it to this day..
Our flag is absolutely iconic and recognized world wide as a symbol of peace, inclusion and integrity. I have had the pleasure of traveling extensively and am always well received where ever I go. I wish more Canadians had the opportunity to travel to other areas of the world; they would then more easily recognize what a great nation we are, and how fortunate they are to be able to identify as Canadian.
The red ensign represented whom? Some Canadians or all Canadians? The red ensign represented British Canadians. The Maple Leaf is representative of all Canadians. The red ensign would not be recognized throughout the world. The red ensign would be confused with all the other flags which have the Union Jack positioned in the hoist. The Maple Leaf is recognized through out the world as the symbol of Canada!!
mark hollingsworth ignorant. The red ensign crest represented English, Scottish, Irish and French as the founder of this country. The flag clearly represented the British control of the country but also the important representation of founding groups. Now look at the leaf, what does is represent? A common leaf of the land that we’re on, no history, no respect for the generations and generations of people who built this country and fought for it in multiple wars. I’m not even part of the group on the crest but the Red Ensign is superior by far.
Here in NZ our flag is going to be changed as well. I'm open to change but I would want the new flag to be inherently NZ and iconic, just like the Canadian flag.
+Trekkie NZ Canada's and the possibly new New Zealand's flags have the same advantages and one common disadvantage (leaves being hard to draw) but both of them look beautiful and better than their old ones. Also, the only other black/blue flag is Estonia's which is ... uhm ... cute.
+Trekkie NZ I liked the silver fern on black background. In fact, if the background was multi-tone, like lighter to darker from one end to the other, would be even cooler. I don't like tri-colour options. I hope it is something that everyone in New Zealand can be happy about.
nsakic Actually, many New Zealanders seem in favour of keeping the current flag. I like the new NZ flag design but in the interest of convenience and money, I opted to vote for the current NZ flag in the referendum. I like the new NZ flag design though.
I'm in my mid sixties and remember that well. Too young to comprehend all the machinations, but was delighted the day our flag came to be. Very very proud.

Which potential do you find objectionable? I'm seeing three potential options. There's one with a fern leaf, one with a green spiral and one with a sort of triangle. I think the first two look nice but the third option is a little boring. They're probably considering a change, because the current one is very suggestive of the empire.

@AC British dominion? What is this 1900? New Zealand is a Commonwealth realm, it has nothing to do with the British other than legacy, but didn't stop Canada and most other Commonwealth realms from adopting autochthonous flags instead of continuing with British ensigns. Or what you don't think Canada is proud of its British heritage? They have the Union Jack, officially known as the Royal Union flag, as an official flag for symbolic purposes like being raised during Commonwealth day.

One girl who's almost the same age as me she lost her arm due to a concussion grenade... Very free... Plus police arresting a firemen I heard. That fireman was doing his job that was in California. No place is perfect. Here in Canada we deal with jerks who are rude to aboriginal people... My American friends which is over 1,000+ on Facebook they all say they don't like the American flag much.
gtapolice1000 - If only you knew your own flag's real history. The current U.S. flag design only dates from 1960, when stars were added for Alaska and Hawaii. The Stars design has changed many times throughout the years. The Canadian flag is an ORIGINAL design. The american flag, as you admit, is an adaption and redesign of the British Union Jack. Yes, you want to show the American flag, but not in all other countries. Americans in Europe are well advised to pretend they are Canadians., and I've met many who do just that. Lastly, Canada was NOT formed and founded by the English alone. A great many other nations were involved.
A LOT of Canadians didn't like our new flag design when it was chosen. It took some years to truly embrace it. But now we wouldn't trade it for any other.
Rob B.C. Old anthem and flag shows more royalty, but I love the current flag and anthem, more simplicity on it. Nonetheless, they’re all amazing in their own way.
They changed the flag to what it is today the year before I joined the RCN in 1966.I attended many "colours'' and sunset ceremonies on various HMCShips always proud to salute the flag when it was raised and lowered especially when in harbour dipping [lowering and raising] our flag to merchant ships who saluted our ship by dipping their flag to us as they sailed past. When I was in the RCN I believe that there was a law that said the national flag was not to be flown after sunset but I think that that has gone by the wayside as I see it at night at our townhall. The one thing that I don't like is when people fly the flag and let it get tattered and not replace it. I was driving across our country [that nobody has to make great again because it already is the greatest country in the world] and I stopped at a truckstop and while gassing up noticed the Canadian flag was tattered and frayed. I stood in line to pay my bill and I asked for the manager and when he came I told him that some of our people paid the ultimate sacrifice for his right to fly our flag at first he didn't seem concerned but the people in the lineups were and they started shouting "He's right.. fix it" So the manager took it down and said that he would buy another one and replace it.I said please don't just throw the old out but to burn it . On my return trip, sure enough the flag was changed. My fathers people came from Ireland during the famine and I'm proud of my heritage but that little red maple leaf tells me that this is my home. Cheers
Not really. Used flags are purchased from people on that massive, 48 year long waiting list. So really, it's no different than stores stocking their shelves with it and people buying it from there.

You're British i presume?.Understandable.
I'm Canadian- but sometimes I think that the old flag was much better. It was so lovely with so much symbolism- Perhaps I'm too much of an anglophile- however I don't see that as a fault- but rather a blessing. God save the Queen, and heaven bless the Maple Leaf Forever.
I wonder why Australia and New Zealand haven't changed theirs yet.
So proud of our Canadian Flag!
Imagine if Pearson hadn't been persistent in creating our own flag! We probably wouldn't have the maple leaf today! 🇨🇦
I almost wept watching this video. I love Canada.
💞💞💞💞😭😭😭😭💞💞💞
Nice to see the best prime minister Canada ever had who passed while in office may god rest his soul LESTER B. PEARSON
Thanks bud
Good points.
I loved the Red Ensign but this was a better idea for Canada to have its own flag
It's funny to me that the original had thirteen points and the one they changed to has eleven. It was ahead of it's time haha
I hope we never forget our roots, French and English. I am glad Canada has our own flag unlike other members of the Commonwealth. The Canadian flag just looks great. The Red Ensign was
nice to.
If you want to remember your English roots, you may want to start writing the language properly.

@@TheovdGulik I am well versed in the English language. Unfortunately my phone is not.
@@mafmaf6417 Fair enough :-)

Haha, I'll sooo use that next time I meet a Canadian. Hopefully he/she has a sense of humour.

I’m going to fly the old one. To me, it represents a time in history when Canada was ‘different.’
i'm by no means a staunch supporter of the monarchy, but purely esthetically speaking, i think the previous flag, crest on red background and union jack was a nicer flag. it envokes history of where we came from. the modern flag of the maple leaf is only a symbol of the national tree.
On the other, hand
www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1363628125362/1363628203744
They literally created a flag whose colours find their meaning from England and France whose colours where taken from the crusades. Which is kinda awesome.
+Gar Yeah it was settled by parliamentary closure. We didn't even get to vote on it. If we had it would have never came to be.
It's the flag our parliamentarians voted for in 1964.Don't like?Become the PM and change it back to the Red Ensign.(3 versions to choose from)

Same with the anthem. Liberals do not listen to the people.
Same remark as to B Strut.Become the PM and change the anthem back to God Save the Queen.(It's still the Royal Anthem by the way.)
It's a beautiful flag
The old one is so much more powerful though
Few people know what it is though. The point of a national flag is to be distinctive and the maple leaf flag is one of the most distinctive in the word
not at all
How many people here know that Canada's colours are red and white because those colours represented Frenchman and Briton warriors during the crusades. Canada was born of Europe.

So because some foreigners didn't like our flag we changed it. Figures. Typically Canadian attitude. Why not erase all symbols of all our history because some group in the world will find offence to it.
Aye
Lol 😔
How dumb are you lol. It made life harder on peace keepers. We're our own country, with our own Identity. We are not British
Only English foreigners like you like the Union Jack. If you want that British symbol on your flag, just go back to England.
+Maxime Schmitt Maybe the Union Jack should be red, gold and black?! Royalties colours!

The red ensign was a symbol of dominance by your former British masters.
Does anyone know if the flag debate had a public referendum or were they just changed by lawmakers?
It was changed by lawmakers, no referendum.
As of October 2020, the waiting time for the Peace Tower flag exceeds 100 years.
I wonder if there are still people who are upset about the new flag.. I'm sure there must be some older people who remember the change and still hate it to this day..
Plenty of people who disliked-and still dislike- the new flag have commented right on this forum.

+Trekkie NZ The proposed flag looks so good
+Trekkie NZ Canada's and the possibly new New Zealand's flags have the same advantages and one common disadvantage (leaves being hard to draw) but both of them look beautiful and better than their old ones.
Also, the only other black/blue flag is Estonia's which is ... uhm ... cute.
+Trekkie NZ I look forward to it :) I love the New Zealand National Anthem as well!
So You can actually be on a list to receive the flag that is flying over the peace tower. Wow thats cool but 48 year wait could be gone by then.
I'm in my mid sixties and remember that well. Too young to comprehend all the machinations, but was delighted the day our flag came to be. Very very proud.
i m canadian and i think keeping british flag with canadian flag was good rather then totally removed, and we shouldnt forget that they were our ancestors and as we dont forget our parents and grandparents same as we shouldnt forget our ancestors. but politicians can never undestand this, its not the matter about slavery or colony.but if you forget ur ancestors or parents its very disrespectful.
Et les Français aussi ...😂😉

+Robert Wilford bravo pour ton français, es-tu un canadien-français des USA.?
In my opinion the flag should be green and white according to the older coat of arms. Red and White is used so often in national flags.
That is a beautiful flag. Not like the potential new flag of New Zealand.
+Magno Gómez I respectfully disagree.
Which potential do you find objectionable? I'm seeing three potential options. There's one with a fern leaf, one with a green spiral and one with a sort of triangle. I think the first two look nice but the third option is a little boring. They're probably considering a change, because the current one is very suggestive of the empire.
@@aaroncarson1770 nothing wrong with the Empire!

48 years for the waiting list to get one of the flags flown?
I'm rather happy now that I got myself on that list about three-four years ago when they told me the waiting list was 23 years.
Welp, when I requested a Peace Tower flag in September of 2016, I was told that the waitlist was 63 years long.
So I guess I should be glad that I'll be dead before I will ever receive one.
Wed 21/10/20: “The waiting period for both Peace Tower and other Parliament Hill flags exceeds 100 years” WTF.
The Canadian flag is very beautiful
New Zealand should do the same, I'm not sure how it'll go down but Canada did it without a referendum.
EDIT:
I guess either I made a mistake or the user above changes their picture to a different British ensign on the regular.
@AC
British dominion? What is this 1900? New Zealand is a Commonwealth realm, it has nothing to do with the British other than legacy, but didn't stop Canada and most other Commonwealth realms from adopting autochthonous flags instead of continuing with British ensigns.
Or what you don't think Canada is proud of its British heritage? They have the Union Jack, officially known as the Royal Union flag, as an official flag for symbolic purposes like being raised during Commonwealth day.
Lance Storm and Team Canada helped popularize the maple leaf flag with Americans.
Canadian flag is the most beautiful flag in the whole world. thank you george stanley!!!
Honestly, it's really aesthetic.
liberal flag..liberal colors no thanks
I'm Canadian. Personally I find all flags interesting. But wow first time I have seen anyone like the American flag. Or say they have freedom. xD All my American friends say there is no freedom. Like where is the freedom with what's happening in North Dakota? People who are peacefully there are being arrested, beaten, sprayed with ice water even now, had concussion grenades thrown at them you name it...
Earth+ no,philippines is the best of the all in earth planet
gtapolice1000 - If only you knew your own flag's real history.
Would not mind having a beer with the maple leaf label.

Our true National flag was and will always be The Red Ensign, Our true National anthem was and will always be The Maple Leaf Forever.
Cheers
Thank you for sharing
Do they really put a brand new flag up every single day? Doesn't that seem kinda wasteful?
Not really. Used flags are purchased from people on that massive, 48 year long waiting list. So really, it's no different than stores stocking their shelves with it and people buying it from there.
+Bob Dole It created a job for someone :)
Uh, each one of those used flags is given, free, to a person on the wait list. I get mine in approximately 33 years! Wonderful tradition!

Why is red and white "traditional"? I remember the same thing with blue borders, which I thought was more representative of the two oceans on either side of Canada.
I can't answer that exactly but it's something about a king saying red and white were Canada's colors, and they were used basically everywhere
The problem is... It just looked weird with blue sides instead of red ones.
