Ashley starts with just 90 seconds to his opponent's 5 minutes.
Played in Fulton Park, Brooklyn, August 25, 2012 - Развлечения
I've been watching videos of people playing chess for like 45 minutes now...have no idea how I ended up here.
Moe Moe chess is contagious it's the best board game ever in my opinion
5 months later i follow in your footsteps...
Hahaha I was working on a motion graphics video, by chance a chess game appeared on my search (wasn't related to my search), and here I am 3 hours watching chess games I love to play with my son he is getting really good after just two years and is very difficult for me to keep up with him, but love to keep trying since I introduced him to the game.
Magic shrooms will do that to you.
Same here! Went ahead and downloaded lichess and chess.com app =)
I wish I lived in a city where people played chess in the park :(
I tried forming a chess club for my city but it didn't take off.
Verratos Rogue dork
@@miketython1493 wow that was impressively childish.
...or listened to real Hip Hop on the regular
New York has everything.
At first I was paying attention but then I realized how absolutely dank the background music was

That song goes waaay baaack Love Bug Starski
Anyone else here just enjoy watching these chess players even though they have no idea what's going on?
Actually, they played very good chess. Maurice Ashley is a Grandmaster, btw. He could beat you 1000 games straight (without a clock).
oh yeah, definitely. I guess I worded that terribly. I meant that I enjoy watching them play even though I have no idea what's going on.
Oh. YOU have no idea what's going on. That makes more sense. lol They do move pretty fast though, so it was hard for me to follow too.
Ohhhhhh hahaha.... yeah, I was about to say... one guy is a 2145 and the other a Grandmaster lol. Yeah they're so good, they move ridiculously quick. I had to pause it a few times to see everything.
nice wording hahah
Those who say the suck. Sorry guys, Maurice Ashley is a dedicated GM who has done great things for the chess world.
+BobbyFischer0000 No need to apologize. You're spot on.
No worries. If more GM's were like Maurice Ashely, the world would be a better place.
+ml12 Who said that?
+Joe Marquette Right from his chess.com page: Maurice Ashley lives his passion. Through his love for chess, he not only made history as the first African-American International Grandmaster in the annals of the game, but he has translated his love to others as a three-time national championship coach, two-time author, ESPN commentator, iPhone app designer, puzzle inventor, and motivational speaker. He is now working as a Joint Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center and MIT’s Media Lab to bring the benefits of chess and other classic games to a wider educational audience through the innovative use of technology.
@Joe Marquette ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.
I love how worn the center squares are
Kasparov must be proud.

This is the best background chess music I’ve ever heard.
Just stumbled on these Brooklyn chess videos and its reawakened my love of this game
taken my FIDE rating from sub 1200 to around 1450 ish all because of these very cool videos, thanks for the upload
I love that they’re still listening to this funky old school shit in 2012 in NYC
Dear GM Maurice Ashley, You are a great personality, I admire and salute you. I have seen most of your video on youtube. Allow me to remind you that you are a hero to so many children especially black children, you are their inspirations so... it requires great responsibility on your part not to let them down. Good luck on your chess and God Bless You.
another racist
No. He was just showing some love.
I can see you are quite familiar with the term racist. There may be help for you with proper medical assistance.
Ronald brown your right, but what he say only black children though :/
+COW He didn't say only black children. He said that he was a hero "to so many children" but "especially black children." How is that racist? And you called the dude a "racist n-word" after he left a nice comment for someone he obviously looks up to. Sorry, but you're the only one bringing racism into this comment section.
His opponent put up one heck of a fight. Well done
"African continent GMs do exist; but, according to the system of racial classification, I am the first Black GM in history... it matters, and doesn't matter, all at the same time. --Maurice Ashley.

John Dunbar ? What a weird comment, please explain
@@matatmat he can't. F'em.

You are a very weak GM!!!
This is probably the best chess video I've seen on RUclips. GM Maurice Ashley is awesome!
I really like and respect GM Maurice A. Since seeing his game with Wilson .
Exactly me too !!!
This radio they bumping straight out of a GTA game.
Needs more Judge Grady.
WBLS New York
Great game and music
Mo cranking up the pressure relentlessly on the queen side. Impressive speed play.
@ 2:59 GM Maurice Ashley says "How can you do that?" because he wants to win a free pawn by playing 25. ..., Bxd4 because of the pinned bishop on e3. Incredibly though, even in bullet time controls, he spots the reason it can't be played: 26. Bxd4, Rxe1?? 27. Ra8+, Re8 28. Rxe8+, Kh7 29. Rh8#
He realizes this after he has already picked up the bishop so the touch rule forces him to play the bishop anyway. He chooses 25. ..., Bf6.
icgantshat that's sick
icgantshat I didnt notice that tactic years ago when i first saw this video. Im glad to have seen it immediately now that ive improved!
What a beautiful comment. Thanks!
icgantshat in English?
At the timestamp it seems like he can take the pawn his bishop is attacking for free since the white bishop defending it is pinned (can't move without dropping the rook).
In reality, if he takes the pawn and the rook immediately, he loses the game on the spot because it's a forced checkmate.
WOAH Maurice you're BLINDING me with that timepiece man!
Wow I haven't heard "Groove Me" by Guy in a while
And, the award for Best Music in a Chess Video goes to...
To me this is CHESS Igrew up playin chess in the war memorial plaza in Baltimore till they shut it down. Now we all play at Reisterstown plaza but this is real mental martial arts I love this shit
5:11( guy in the middle ) that's my pops ! RIP DADDY I LOVE YOU!
It's not a chess match unless everyone watching is coughing.
Maurice Ashley in 1999 Became 1st and only African descent Jamaican/ and American Grandmaster.
That's a Grand Master watch that Maurice is wearing right there.
Saturday afternoon: Blitz in park, 'BLS blairing in the background, a mild Summer afternoon in NYC. Priceless !
Yep. I remember the days.
I found amazing how the GM had the move Bxd4 prepared and realized at the last moment in a blitz of a second that he's gonna be mated if he tries to win the pawn and the exange. Too bad white didn't realize the threat and lost the pawn by pinning his own bishop....
i had to think about it to understand that it would have been mate, he did in less than 2 secs, that's why he's GM and we're not :D
leratluci only if he took the rook. but he would have lost the bishop.
leratluci that was quite a moment
2:59 for this, guys
I wonder what he was going to say "How can you be that..."
I love watching Maurice Ashley play!
I don’t know what I enjoyed more, the chess or the music!
Wow the late great Sweet Pea is in the background RIP. A legend from Washington Square Park
Love to see him bumping at 3:47 :) the bishop forking the rooks made my jaw drop too
Great music.
hell yes
I can't really recognize the song, but they are talking about Low End Theory, an album by A Tribe Called Quest, so I'm guessing it's one of their songs. Feel free to check them out, they are great :)
it’s not tribe it’s old skool new jack swing, maybe teddy riley/guy
Qwampa1 Yup, Guy - Groove Me
Love bug starski - you gotta believe
4:21 Rf6+ Kg5 Rf5# Missed mate in 2 i guess
+Rasmus Hvidberg Very correct! But you know time pressure often clouds chess players' minds.
+Rasmus Hvidberg if Rf6+ then Kxe5 am i missing something?
panos kalyvites Instead of Maurice's Be5, he should have just played Rf6+. His bishop was on d4, not e5. Get it bro?
+Goriola Adio oh now it makes perfect sense!
panos kalyvites...the beauty of Chess...
This was randomly recommended. Didn’t notice this video is playing backwards
wow this was so so so awesome to watch
3:48 Ashley started his victory dance XD
😂
4:51 " Son of a b***"
The music in the background was sweet haha especially at the bishop move in the end
Thoroughly enjoyed analysing this game well played Maurice in an amazingly fast time the last fork on the two rooks was the decisive move
Wow. MA still beat a 2145 player with a 3 1/2 minute disadvantage on a 5 minute blitz game!
that's crazy to think he is 2145 rated player
Well played!
I really enjoyed watching.
3:49 jamming out and knew he was going to win
dude, full respect to his opponent, 5 minute more or not, that was an amazing effort!
I played leon last weekend im rated 1950 and he crushed me 3-0. i would say hes probbaly rated around 2300 by now. cool to see him play a GM ashley.
song name is 'Groove Me' by artist called Guy
The music is 🔥🔥🔥
something about chess and this music is perfect
THE SET UPS AND THAT BISHOP MOVE DID DAMAGE.👍🏅 RESPECT MASTER.
Straight up Brooklyn. From the chess play down to the music. Old school R&B group Guy, with Groove Me.
Maurice's opponent was very fairplay in resigning with 0'19 left to Maurice...
It was actually 16 secs
I am so digging the song
I like how they handle the pieces
There is a nice moment in this game : at 3:00 ...Bxd4 seems to win at least a crucial pawn for black since Bxd4 Rxe1 loses the rook...but then Ra8+ Kh7 Rh8# and white wins !
Maurice maybe wanted to play Bxd4 but after some calculations he placed his bishop back on g7 and played Bf6 instead.
That Kf3 move that White made was a bad move. It cost him the game. You could tell Maurice was relieved by that mistake. LOL
yea he wanted to escape the pin but done worse for himself
I am not an expert and was very puzzled by that move. What's wrong with a straightforward e4?
funny too, 'cause it was the move l thought of before he made it & thought it was good, but Maurice refuted that right quick, lol
Very smooth! Good work GM Ashley! :)
It's sportsmanship that's why he resigned.
***** Yeah my bro always gets pissed when i don't resign or agree draws when he only has a few seconds left.
@Mikkel Grabinski A while back in a league game my teammate on the board next to me had a winning position, and the other guy just got up, left and drove off. My mate had to sit there for over an hour while the clock ran down.
Sitting around playing chess to some old school hip hop. ❤
superb recovery by Maurice there in the middle game
I think that was sweet pea from back in the day. At the beginning, when the camera pans away from table
At 3:00 ..Rxa5 was a nice tactical shot as it seems Bishop can win pawn on d4 due to pin on rook on e1. Maurice even picks bishop but then realises that there is a nice tactical shot .. if Bxd4 then Bxd4 Rxe1 Ra8+ Kh7 followed by Rh8# is checkmate..he realises that, therefore puts the bishop back down and says "How can you do that"? Later at 3:40 however he does get the same Bxd4.
Times like this make me happy i was tought my maurice ashley thank god he came to automotive
Background Music : Love Bug Starski - You've Gotta Believe
The music is amazing.
this so great to see i wish they would have battle on espn
Seen this video a few times.. every time I say that is a catchy song.
at 3:40 he knows how its ending.
damn thats washington square park legend sweet pea in the backround. RIP
I've seen Maurice play blind folded very impressive
I would love to get this exact audio from the radio onto my drive so I can groove it out whenever I want
4:24 I can hear that guy in that famous hustler game Ashley played lol! Bet you didn’t notice
Unbelievable catch if true
Wilson’s in the house! 😂😂😂😂
I found out about Ashley when I saw a vid of him playing Wilson in the park been trying to study his games since great chess player
The other dude was actually playing pretty good, hats off to him.
Nice to see people that when they see their game is lost, resing, a lot of people try to win by time, knowing that the enemy played better
But if your opponent used more time, that meant they had more time to think. So they had an advantage in getting a better position. So they should get pressured on the clock if they've used too much.
He had 16 seconds left, he would've still won it. Also there is indeed a tournament rule that prevents you from playing pointless moves to make the time run out. Apart from that, if you play too slow you deserve to lose
3:52 What happens if Rook B3 takes on B6? C takes B6, Bishop takes B6 and if white re-captures re loses the rook. Anyone knows what I'm missing?
After Rxb6 cxb6 if Bxb6 Txe6 first and it’s not working
Wasn't fair though.. Ashley had permanent brain on...
Gm Ashley isn’t human he’s the iceman very cool player what a legend
such a chill vibe
Many people are suggesting Bxd4 for black, but at the wrong moment (i.e. leads to checkmate when white's king is on the second rank). I am surprised Ashley missed the easiest thematic win after Rb8, white plays 1. Qc2 (at around 2:20). Ashley's 1...a5 is fine, but easier is simply 1...Bxb3 2. axb3 Qxb3 3. Qxb3 Rxb3 and if 4. Rxa7 Bxd4! when Bxd4 loses to Rxe1+ and then retreating either rook to the eighth rank. Wins a pawn and the exchange, which is an easy technical win at this level, even given the time disadvantage. Simple chess :)
+Elias-Axel Pettersson Perhaps he was being merciful?
What a picturesque scenario.
I love Maurice's watch so much. I know it's a bit of a vapid response to the video, but I just see it and love it so much.
As someone who is terrible at blitz, I'm in awe of how fast they move.
Great GM Maurice's win.
It’s so satisfying watching his opponents go from attacking to retreating in a matter of 2 moves lol
4:22 Ashley misses mate in two: Rf6+ Kg5 Rf5#.
Ny is such a great city. All the boroughs have such flavor goin on
The Grandmaster does it again. Well done Maurice.
Maurice flexing that super dope watch in the beginning ^^
Wicked fork, didn't see that coming
A grandmaster will always use your time against you more than you use it. They play their turns while you're on yours going through all your possible moves and when you finally make it they go with the counter that they pre-planned limiting the amount of time taken on the pro's turn. It's brilliant. They kill you in the long game.
insane tactics
He hung with Maurice for longer than I expected. He must be at least a Master.
Nice win Mr. Ashley.
for any people wondering why maurice said how can he be that lucky. He had a great position to take a free pawn on d4 with his bishop but the position would have caused a forced checkmate if bishop takes bishop, rook takes rook white rook has a forced mate. its the same move he ends up making but this time with a pinned bishop
Damn the whole time he low-key flexing on us with that watch huh
Ben
What does that mean in English exactly?
That actually was English, either you're trying to be typically full of edge, or something because even if you didn't really understand his comment, it could easily be figured out by context clues or research on the terms you deem questionable.
nice game, nice old skool music
What's that song in the background called? It sounds like it's saying "you've got to leave" but I can't tell
Zachary Calderon You've Got to Believe - Love Bug Starski
@@Sal_Gasol Wrong.
@@SeldomPooper /HfeP9yN0gs8. That's the first song then segued in to a radio edit by WBLS to 'Groove Me' by Guy.
Oh nice, I see it now. The Rh8 with the bishop mate. Good eye.
all the talk about 17 seconds left on the clock or so is enough time to beat maurice on time but you all seem to forget he made 3 moves per second in a slightly advantageous position in a dominant position that will jump to a minimum of 5 moves per second and than that 17 seconds becomes more than enough
This was great.
Love that old school track, Guy - groove me
I wish I could play in these
